As fact checkers busily highlight the myriad number of lies and distortions offered by Mitt-Etch-A-Sketch-Romney during last night's debate, and the spinners spin their polls with impunity, I find it interesting that the debate tactic itself has not yet been discussed nor properly analyzed. In fact, the lies and distortions offered by Romney in last night's debate are the very ESSENCE of his tactic -- and is therefore quite pertinent to the discussion. Romney used a debate tactic known as the Gish Gallop.

The Urban Dictionary defines the Gish Gallop thusly:

Named for the debate tactic created by creationist shill Duane Gish, a Gish Gallop involves spewing so much bull@!$%# in such a short span on that your opponent can’t address let alone counter all of it. Romney used a debate technique called spreading. In a classic debating competition spreading is illegal and gets you disqualified from the debating match. The saving grace of the poor is their large numbers. What each may be able to pay is next to nothing, but in aggregate the total represents a tidy savings, when split among the few wealthy (an amount the wealthy would not have to pay in taxes).

In 2007, the Adjusted Gross Income of the bottom 50% was $1,078 billion!

If we took 30%, they would contribute $323 billion. Divided by the 141,000 taxpayers in the top .1%, that is $2.3 million each!

Wage payers are "makers": why should they be taxed, at all!? Wage earners are "takers": they should pay for those things that induce the makers to do business, or hire, in their neighborhoods!

You might be able to get the rich to agree to higher taxes, and no loopholes, if those taxes are on wages only: taxes get deducted from your wages and you have a simplified tax code which has no provisions for getting any of the money back. Yay! no more tax returns! And no taxes on investment income, capital gains or inheritance!

I don't know what all of the deductions and loopholes are for the rich, since I've never been able to use any of them... as most of us probably haven't. But even if he gets rid of all of those deductions and loopholes for the rich, it still won't make up for the huge tax cut Robme wants to give the rich... which means he will either add to the deficit OR have to increase taxes on the middle class by taking away the few tax deductions we have. Also from what I understand, Robme is planning on doing away with the inheritance tax or "death tax", which again will primarily BENEFIT THE WEALTHY.

That means Robme will require those at the bottom end of the economy and living close to poverty, who don't currently make enough to pay income tax (that 47% Robme spoke of) have to fork over their (widow's mite) from the meager earnings they have. It will not include the wealthy paying any more than they do now, and from most reports they will be paying 20% less than they have under the Bush tax cuts.

A LONG List of President Obama’s Accomplishments!

If you’re one of those folks who thinks President Obama is a “disappointment,” you haven’t been paying attention the last few years. And those of you who believe the lies you hear on Fox, from the GOP and Mutt Robme... you should put away the hallucinogens and the wacky tea and have your head examined. So far, this president has done most of what he said he would do if elected; at least what the GOP haven't obstructed and blocked. Imagine what he could have done by now if all of those who had voted for him in 2008 had gotten their butts to the polls in 2010 and voted against the TEApugs who took over the House. Not only is he NOT a “disappointment,” he’s pretty much the opposite. And not just because he took out Osama bin Laden, helped Libya determine their own destiny for the first time in a while, and because he seems able to handle international incidents without starting a new war. The guy does nearly everything we elect a president to do, and he doesn’t brag about it constantly.... or stand on aircraft carriers with big MISSION ACCOMPLISHED signs behind him.

Is he perfect? No, he’s human. Does he deserve some criticism? I suppose, but so far I haven’t seen any complaints from the right wing nuts that were based on anything having to do with the reality. As far as I'm concerned, aside from his annoying habit of bending over backwards to be bi-partisan with the idiots of the GOP, on balance, he’s mostly stellar.

Criticism about certain specific issues is one thing; but refusing to recognize all the Obama has been able to accomplish even with the obstruction of the Regressive Right has the potential to put Willard Romney into power, and all that he stands for.... ultimate power and control of the 1%. I'm sorry but I was a Mormon for close to 25 years, and there is NO OCCULT involved in the religion. The actual name of the church is THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS. There is absolutely no practice of the Occult anywhere in the LDS church.

The church teaches faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior of mankind and to follow and practice the teachings of Christ. There are very good people in the Mormon church and they consider themselves Christians. Mutt Robme is obviously a very poor example of the typical Mormon or LDS member... I'm sorry to say.

This discussion of a prophecy about a "Mormon President" is sort of being blown out of proportion, I think. Not to mention the fact that it is being misunderstood by the current major political influences within the church... who can't and don't recognize where the real prophesied destruction of the Constitution is coming from because they are part of it, on the wrong side in the Republican party.

So if you will allow me to contribute a little bit of my own incite into the discussion... let's examine the "White Horse prophecy" and take a look from a different perspective. Our perspective or at least my perspective as a Democrat who is also familiar with church philosophy and doctrine. It might also give a better perspective of God's meaning... and maybe even Joseph Smith perspective who by the way, was a Democrat during his lifetime.

In this prophesy, the Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the Constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time "this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction" (Journal of Discourses, 7:15).

First of all, from my perspective I have to say that the prophesy doesn't actually say anything about a member of the LDS church becoming President. So any allusions of anyone in the church thinking that is what this means, is reading things into it that aren't clearly stated there. I'm not sure where the idea that it was referring to a "Mormon President" came from in the first place.

Secondly, if we look at the political influences currently attempting to destroy the government, and the reasons they give for doing so... it is mainly their MISINTERPRETATION of the Constitution. And of course, it is the Republican party who are the actual threat to "destroying the Constitution" and "overthrowing the country", ie. our Democratic government.

In fact, we have been witnessing these attempts to destroy the Constitution and over throw of the government for decades, and particularly the past 4 years... with the Repug obstruction of anything President Obama has tried to do to help the country. Does anyone disagree with me about that or deny that these attacks have been happening since Ronnie Raygun first proposed "trickle down economics" and "union busting" through to the present with Repug/TEApug obstruction?

Okay... so the real problem is not with the prophesy itself, as many of us might agree that indeed the Constitution is being attacked by the Repugs/Libertarians who are in fact trying to overthrow the country and government, in order to install their corporate and plutocratic rule.

Where the problem comes in is that those in the LDS church who are pushing a fulfillment of this prophesy are also Republicans and so are unable to view their own party's actions realistically or unbiased. Because of this they are failing to understand that it is the extreme base of their own party, along with those of the corporate world who are the ones fulfilling the portion of the prophsey about 'destroying the Constitution and overthrowing the country'.

With this in mind, it is obvious that if this prophesy is true or will be fulfilled, it will NOT BE any member of the Republican party who saves the Constitution or the country and government. If this prophesy is true and members of the LDS church will play a part in saving the Constitution (along with other good citizens in this country obviously), they will most likely be those who are Democrats or at least are not affiliated with those parties intent on destroying the government... such as the TEAparty and other radical members of the GOP (and/or Libertarians since they share similar anti-government sentiments).

Any objections to those ideas or my interpretation of things?

I agree with you that there can be dangers in someone who is motivated by their own vanity or power lust, to use a prophecy such as this for the purpose of gathering a following. On the other hand, Jesus Christ himself also preached that He was the One whom had come to fulfill prophecy and many of us wouldn't deny that to be true, though the Pharisees of his time did.

But I do agree that in the case of this "White Horse prophecy", there are mistakes being made in terms of interpreting who it might refer to. Simply because the LDS church has become entangled in mistakenly associating themselves with the Republican party. But I think this influence of the rabid GOP on the LDS church explains why most members of the church think that Mutt Robme is now the fulfillment of the prophecy.

And I'm sure Mutt probably believes it about himself also, considering the size of the ego he seems to have. By the way, the last I heard, the LDS church has made election day a day of "fasting and prayer" within the church for the purpose of getting Robme elected. Maybe the rest of us need to take up the opposite admonition to Heavenly Father, so save us from that fate.

The GOP has become more and more rabid and without any recognition of logic or common sense.... much less adherence to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The philosophies of the GOP have also had a detrimental effect on many other Christian churches also, not just the LDS church. It all began when the GOP decided to take up the social agenda of the religious right in order to incorporate them into the party.

I also had not known that the demented "Loon complète" Glen Beck thought the prophecy to be about him... as I don't follow him in anyway. Mitt Romney said Tuesday he has no plans to push for legislation limiting abortion, a softer stance from a candidate who has said he would "get rid of" funding for Planned Parenthood and appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

The U.S. intelligence community has revised its assessment of the deadly attack on the American consulate in Libya, saying it now believes it was a deliberate terrorist assault.

In an unusual statement on Friday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence sought to explain how it has revised its view of the September 11 attack on the diplomatic post that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others.

The assessment moves away from the initial belief the attack began spontaneously following a protest over an anti-Muslim film. The intelligence community now believes it was "a deliberate and organized terrorist assault carried out by extremists" affiliated or sympathetic with al Qaeda.

The statement represents the fullest accounting yet of the intelligence community's changed understanding of the attack, and suggests it is trying to distance itself from the political debate over whether the Obama administration is being fully forthcoming about its understanding of events.

The release of such information outlining an ongoing investigation is rare and underscores just how controversial the issue has become.

"In the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo," according to the statement from Shawn Turner, director of public affairs for the national intelligence office.

The statement continues that the information was provided to the White House and Congress with the clear understanding it was preliminary and could change.

"We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available. Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving," the statement said.

But the statement makes it clear that the view has changed, although it does not specify over what period of time that occurred.

"As we learned more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists," according to the statement.

Last week, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Matt Olsen, described the incident as a terror attack but noted it was not "significantly planned."

His statement came just a few days after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice described the attack based more on what the intelligence community says is its initial assessment - that it arose from a protest.

This week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he believed the attack was "clearly" conducted by terrorists who planned it, and said that it "took a while" for there to be information to reach such a conclusion.

But on the same day, a senior U.S. official told CNN that within a day or so of the attack, the U.S. intelligence community began to gather information suggesting it was the work of extremists either affiliated with al Qaeda groups or inspired by them.

The timing of when this understanding overtook the initial assessment remains unclear.

"It remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with, or sympathetic to (al Qaeda)," according to the statement.

"As more information becomes available our analysis will continue to evolve and we will obtain a more complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack," the statement said.

Turner said the intelligence community will continue to assist the State Department and FBI in their investigation.

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — The attack that killed four Americans in Libya, including the U.S. ambassador, was an organized two-part operation by heavily armed militants that included a precisely timed raid on a supposedly secret safe house just as Libyan and U.S. security forces were arriving to rescue evacuated consulate staff, a senior Libyan security official said on Thursday.

Wanis el-Sharef, eastern Libya's deputy interior minister, said the attacks Tuesday night were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary and that the militants used civilians protesting an anti-Islam film as cover for their action. Infiltrators within the security forces may have tipped off militants to the safe house location, he said.

The next attack came hours later. Around 30 American staffers along with Libyans had been evacuated to the safe house while a plane arrived from Tripoli with a joint U.S.-Libyan security group that was to fly them back to the capital, el-Sharef said.

El-Sharef said the original plan was for a separate Libyan security unit to escort the evacuees to the airport. Instead, the joint unit went from the airport to the safe house, possibly because they were under the impression they were dealing with a hostage situation, he said. He says they were killed RESPONDING TO THE ATTACK...

Republicans cut millions of dollars from the embassies security. They cut $128 million the first time and then later cut $331 million the second time. It is the GOP who really are not worthy of being in our government. They cut the money for our embassies and wonder why this terrible attack happened. They want to blame President Obama when they are cutting everything but taxes for the wealthy.
