MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to Ed Schultz, host of MSNBC's The Ed Show, about President Barack Obama's debate performance and the concerns of many on the left about what comes next.
Here is a transcript of Ed's first reaction to tonight's debate, speaking to MSNBC host Rachel Maddow:
"I was disappointed in the president. The president - he had an opportunity tonight - he created a problem for himself on Social Security tonight, he agrees with Mitt Romney. Everybody liberal in this country knows that Mitt Romney wants to privatize Social Security down the road and to do a deal with the devil on that would be a wrong thing to do. I think the president created a big problem for him tonight - for himself. I don't think he explained himself very well on the economy. I thought he was off his game. I was absolutely stunned tonight. Rachel, you just mentioned about time -- the president needs to get in and fight for that time. There's people out there that expect him to fight for that time."
Later, Ed said this:
"I was in front of a crowd last night in Denver, Colorado, and I know that they're stunned, I can feel it. I mean, the president tonight was disappointing when he allowed Mitt Romney to talk about $716 billion in Medicare and the president did not come out and explain it and go after it."
Ed added:
"[Obama] was not properly prepared for this tonight. He was afraid to call out Romney because he didn't want to look angry. The fact is that he has faced obstruction - he was afraid to use that term tonight, he wouldn't go down that road. He was afraid to use the Ryan plan as a manifest of what these people want to do to this country. It was playing soft, I mean [Obama] was in prevent-defense big time."

I hope you're right. I'd like to Obama go for Rombot's jugular in the next debate, but I don't know if that will happen. Romney knew the majority of people watching tonight, trying to make up their mind, wouldn't know if he was lying or not. So he lied his butt off. Also knowing that those people wouldn't bother to check. It's too bad everyone in this country doesn't follow this stuff even half as closely as we do. Then you would have a pretty well-informed electorate. I have the feeling the fact checkers will put out a list tomorrow that should be rather extensive for Mitty's lies and half-truths.

Willard's base saw the candidate move center (lie) that they will vote for while holding their nose. Will that leave a bad enough taste in their mouth to vote for another candidate for President rather than deprive themselves of oxygen? Damn I couldn't stand looking at that smirk on his face.
The President is a thoughtful man.......don't look at it as a negative that he was looking down while jotting down his own notes......not unusual for someone who will be in 2 more debates and can also participate in how the next debate will go. I do want to see more of the same fighting spirit in the next 2 debates this man has for the 98% of Americans........the 2% are doing just fine.

How can Romney or any candidate stand there and say that Obama has failed policies. The House has not voted in any of the Presidents policies the ones they did vote in are working great. Mitt showed his Bain side. The host lost control. The format allowed Mitt to lie, have Obama confront it, then Mitt changed the lie to another lie. Obama takes credit for getting out of Iraq but Bush signed the deal with the Iraq before leaving office that set the date for the troops to leave Iraq. Obama was just the President when that date came. He did not get anyone out of Iraq, the deal was already done.

The President was presidential and, as he does so often, he let the other guy make turnover after turnover, e.g. cut Public Broadcasting; give vouchers for education and for medicare. What was important for the country to hear tonight was not that Obama make his points, but that everyone heard Romney make his -- in public and on tape! Not good news tomorrow for Romney!

On the contrary, Romney may have used the analogy of his five sons repeating something until it's true, but it was Obama who held the patient father position while Romney ranted. Is that how he would "talk" to congress by talking over them? He had a very entitled demeanor. In a nation weaned on action movies, it requires thoughtfulness to appreciate the President's character. Time will tell if our nation is thoughtful enough.

Romney has one advantage. He has no daytime job, unlike the President. Romney isn't working. He can devote all his time to running. He has ample time to be trained for the debate. He also has no character and is willing to bend and cover the facts. What he said yesterday has no bearing on what he is willing to say tomorrow.
The President on the other hand has a very important, sometimes unpredictable job. What he says is not just talk.... It can have immediate consequences. You might think Romney won the debate if you think a president should be a smug, pompous ass, who changes his story every day or two. I admit he looked much better and came across as a guy who might know something about what he's talking about. Unfortunately it was all lies. If you're judging him on substance and truthfulness, however, he gets a very low score. Personally, I'd rather have an honest guy for president who does a good job in an extremely difficult situation, who would rather be spending the evening with his wife on their anniversary, instead of a rude smart ass trying to pretend he's not working for his puppet masters and that he actually would do his own thinking if he were elected and not follow the orders of his handlers.

This to me was just more about style more than substance. I STILL don't know what specifics Romney would provide to the people on closing loopholes among other things. Obama's style is more professorial and oblique, Romney's style is more of a bully.
Not sure Mitt won the debate but he did control most of it. He never really said anything definite about what he would do just tossed out some softballs and Obama didn't hit it. Hopefully he will knock it out the park in NY on the 16th.

Romney was energetic and on target. He ran all over President Obama. In trying to look presidential, President Obama looked anything but. Romney acted like he wanted to win. President Obama really needed to confront Romney on his many false statements. Even Obama's opening statement was weak. He got off on the wrong foot and it just continued on. Pres Obama made a few good rebuttals on Medicare and ObamaCare, but lost on almost everything else. Those Romney ZINGERS really worked. The ETCH-A-SKETCH moment worked for Romney.

I would like to encourage my fellow Democrats to take a deep breath and exhale. We need to keep our eyes on the prize...not the theatrics of a floundering Republican candidate grasping at straws as he goes down in the polls.
We need our commentators, bloggers and Progressive electorate to stay focused. Coming out of the convention, we were all united around a common goal: Re-electing President Obama. Now, can one debate with a lying Republican candidate send us running to the hills? Don't repeat the mistakes of 2010 by disparaging the President!

You know, I'm not so sure Obama wasn't brilliant. I saw Romney co-opt many of Obama's policy positions & become a Democrat tonight. Perhaps Obama didn't win a ton of new votes tonight, but I'm sure Romney LOST a ton of conservative / tea party votes by claiming the middle of the road and claiming credit for many of Obama's accomplishments.

Yesterday night proved only that Rompsey is the perfect flip-flopper (once again!!!) who can lie with a straigth face. He kept mentioning "his" so-called success in partisanship in Massachusettes: well, he should reming his fellow rebullicans in Congress about it. Then he said that he can fix the economy: a bit difficult to believe him, since his state, when he was governor, fell back to the 47th place for competitivity in the USA!
And when he said he cares about his fellow Americans during the final address, he forgot to specify that he does not include the 47% "free-loaders"....
Personally the only thing that I could tell President Obama is that he should be less gentleman like and call "Rompsey" with his proper name: LIAR!

Ed I agree that President Obama should have looked Governor Romney in the eyes instead of down while debating, however President Obama was the only one giving pertinent specifics of his plan as President. You can do all the blustering you want and talk over people. But if you maintain you debate with non facts you create a world of trouble for yourself and your party. Governor Romney lies will make him fail the attempt at Presidency.
We all know the Pres. is a very smart man, he didn't get to be the president without a lack of knowledge. he set Romney up to let him to lie to the American people and around the world. If he would have gotten aggroant like Romney, the first think the people would said he was a angry black man. I'm glad the president kept his likeability.
