Republican congressional candidates are running from him. New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez runs from him. Conservative columnist Peggy Noonan calls his campaign "incompetent." Republican kingmaker Karl Rove says he needs to "be careful." Even running mate Paul Ryan even said said his comments were "obviously inarticulate."
Now even his own mother is distancing herself from Mitt Romney's assessment of the "47 percent" of Americans who pay no [federal] income tax as people "who are dependent on government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has responsibility to take care of them, who believe they are entitled to food, to housing, to you name it. It's an entitlement and that the government should give it to them, and they will vote for this president no matter what."
BuzzFeed has found a video (via the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library) of Romney's late mother Lenore giving an impassioned endorsement of her husband, George, during his 1962 successful run for governor of Michigan.
At one point, the interviewer asks, "There are those who say that since he's a man of considerable means, he really doesn't care about people."
"You know, we've only owned our home for the last four years. He was a refugee from Mexico. He was on welfare relief for the first years of his life," Lenore responds.
"The family was poor. He said they lived for a year on nothing but potatoes. He's known what it is to have to work for every dime he's had since he was 12," she adds.
Indeed, George Romney's grandparents were polygamous Mormons who left the United States in the late 1880's with their children owing to the federal government's prosecution of polygamy.
After the family fled the Mexican revolution and returned to the U.S. in July 1912, the Romneys, including five-year-old George, received government assistance from a $100,000 fund established by Congress to help refugees who had lost their homes and most of their belongings.
George went on to become a wildly successful businessman (as Chairman and President of American Motors Corporation), (twice-elected) Governor of Michigan and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. And it all started with the "welfare relief" Lenore Romney was referring to in 1962.
Romney's parents died in the 1990s, so we'll never know for sure, but it is hard to imagine they would agree with their son's assessment of the "47 percent" if they were alive today.

Thanks.....cm, brought this to our attention this afternoon and that ain't all.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock all morning, you probably know by now
that Mitt Romney, during a reception for wealthy donors,
said that 47 percent
of Americans pay no income tax, are dependent on the government, and will
vote for President Obama ”no matter what.” Romney said that these people will
vote for Obama because they feel that they are entitled to government handouts
by way of food, shelter, and health care.
What Romney doesn’t mention is that the people who don’t pay income tax do
pay other taxes, such as payroll tax, and state and local taxes.
Romney also doesn’t mention that these people don’t pay income tax because
they’re to poor to pay it. But what Romney also omits from his conversation is
that 7,000 millionaires paid
no tax in 2011:
It’s not the poor people who are cheating the system. Most of them really are
poor, and don’t make enough to owe any taxes. It’s the rich – who make more than
enough but take advantage of loopholes to get around paying taxes – who are
cheating the tax system.
But since Romney is a member of that elite class, he will never focus on
them, and prefers instead to direct the ire to the poorest people in the
country. Once Romney release his tax returns, then we can discuss tax fairness.
Good stuff TM.
Thank you.
Pseudologia fantastica - the 1% disease
Why are republicans loosing? They have lots more money so they should be winning.
This is a form of lying that involves delusions in otherwise healthy individuals.
Paranoid schizophrenia is far more serious and debilitating illness that can render one unable to function as a result of deeply held delusions that often manifest as greater religiosity that draws them to seek comfort in church.
Romney is not mentally disabled as would be the case with schizophrenia.
By the same token, it is obvious to the causal observer that Romney is not normal.
About half the population is sufficiently mentally ill to be susceptible to this phenomenon, and this is profoundly disturbing when politicians begin exploiting this using mass media.
Common urban legends involve birth certificates, "tax moochers" like handicapped, elderly, and mentally ill, as well as the idea that immigrant farm workers are "stealing farm jobs" from US citizens despite the fact no US citizens make a living picking fruit and vegetables.
This kind of delusion is overcome by confronting individuals with truth linked to credible sources like universities and credible news organizations that report facts like MSNBC.
The 10 poorest states are the Republican voting base andthey dominate the 47%.
The harsh reality of truth provided by Romney this week has slapped people hard enough that some are no longer deluded by fantasies.
Romney has repeated delusional fantasies so often and so hard that he is being to believe the lies that are being used to win votes.
It is now clear that this is costing him votes.
While a licensed psychologist may not wish to risk their license discussing this, an elderly financially independent "tax moocher" may have no problem doing that with the proper enticement.
Love the show.
And well you should, CH!
The Insanity of taking Obama off the ballot in Kansas is over!
Title: Panel Decides Obama Will
Stay On Kansas Ballot Despite Birther Objections

A board of three elected Republican officials decided to allow President
Barack Obama to remain on the Kansas ballot during a brief meeting on Monday,
despite the protest of California lawyer/dentist Orly Taitz, arguably the
nation’s most infamous “birther.”
The unanimous vote brought a swift end to a saga which began Thursday evening
when the Kansas Objections Board considered a complaint from a state resident seeking to exclude Obama from the ballot. That resident, Joe Montgomery of Manhattan, Kan., originally said he believed Obama was not a natural born U.S. citizen and therefore was ineligible to qualify for reelection. But he withdrew
his objection on Friday, making Monday’s meeting more or less a formality to
close the matter.
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Lt.
Gov. Jeff Colyer voted to close the matter during the 15-minute meeting. They
did so without making a ruling about the president’s citizenship. State Election
Director Brad Bryant told TPM, however, that the board added a certification of
Obama’s place of birth that Hawaii sent Kansas over the weekend into the record
before bringing the matter to a close.
“In light of the withdraw, there wasn’t another issue before the board, they
didn’t have to deny the objection,” Bryant said. “Actually, there was a motion
to deny the objection but [Kobach] said there wasn’t any reason to because it
had been withdrawn and there wasn’t any issue before the board. The effect is
President Obama’s name is on the ballot. It was never removed.”
Bryant said Taitz wanted to continue to debate the matter but Kobach told her
the deadline to file an objection had passed.
“I didn’t know her until I started receiving emails over the weekend,
submissions of documents by email,” Bryant said. “So she showed up and wanted to
speak but wasn’t allowed to, but she did get interviewed by several press
people.”
Kobach, who told
TPM last week he might answer questions about his personal beliefs about
whether Obama was a natural-born citizen after the matter was closed, did not
immediately respond to a request for comment.
Thank you for the story Steve.
Fox News is hyping non-controversial comments by President Obama to suggest that he is a closet extremist.
Echoing an attack by Mitt Romney, several Fox personalities attacked Obama for saying in 1998 that he supports government spending in order to "make sure that everybody's got a shot." These Fox personalities suggested that Obama's views were more troubling than Mitt Romney's disparagement of the 47 percent of Americans he says are "dependent upon government."
But as The Washington Post's Greg Sargent pointed out, Obama's comments are completely uncontroversial. Indeed, even Romney said yesterday that he believes in "government caring for those in need." Sargent explained:
But Fox nevertheless eagerly jumped on the Romney talking point that Obama is an extremist who supports redistribution.
On his Fox show, Sean Hannity claimed that Obama went "off teleprompter" in the video cited by Romney "admitting that in fact he believes in redistribution of wealth." Hannity called this supposed revelation a "key point in this campaign."
In a phone interview during On the Record, frequent Fox guest Donald Trump claimed he was not surprised by the video because redistribution is "his basic mindset."
Today, in a tease of a segment covering Obama's 14 year old comments, Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson suggested Obama was making the point that "the best way to create wealth is to spread it around," before playing a cropped clip of Obama's saying he "believes in redistribution."
And on his Fox Business show, Lou Dobbs attempted to justify Romney's 47 percent remarks. He followed by claiming that Obama's response to the supposedly high tax burden on the higher earners is to "squawk about redistribution and fairness."
Them there repugs are absolute desperate to disdain Obama, for not disdaining the 47%. So sad, but I'm so glad willard is a wimp.
http://mediamatters.org/blog/2012/09/19/foxs-varney-pushes-widely-criticized-claim-that/190017
Fox Business host Stuart Varney claimed that raising taxes on the rich would slow the economy. However, independent research shows that raising marginal tax rates on the wealthy would have little to no impact on the economy, while lowering taxes on the rich does not contribute to the economy and jobs.
On America Live, Varney defended Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's economic plan by claiming that if "you raise taxes on the rich, does that really go to helping the poor?" Varney went on to claim, "If you raise taxes on the so-called rich, you actually slow the economy. You get less growth, so you've got a smaller pie to reshape. That is Romney's argument."
But independent research shows that raising taxes on the rich does not harm the economy, while cutting them does not spur economic growth.
A recent study by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) found that periods with higher tax rates for the wealthy did not correspond to slower economic growth. The CRS report concluded:
The report also stated that previous economic research "suggests that modest tax rate increases would have little negative impact on long-term economic growth and job creation."
Economists also agree that lowering taxes for the wealthy does not create jobs. A recent post by Talking Points Memo on the CRS report described the study as finding that "cutting effective tax rates on the rich doesn't boost economic growth, but it does correlate with rising income inequality."
Howard Gleckman of the Tax Policy Center echoed these findings, writing that "tax cuts for these high-earners will do relatively little to boost the economy in the short run":
Research also shows that few small businesses would be affected by raising taxes on the wealthy. A Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) report found that "only 2.5 percent of small business owners" would face higher rates as a result.
clearly he has long forgotten his roots or those days of "eating potatoes" as his mom elegantly states on some days. he has become heartless and has loss all compassion for the poor, disabled, unemployed, and the elderly. his words alone spoke volumes and to the very core of him. and he suppose to be a Mormon. when Jesus walked the earth he helped the poor, sick, disabled, and disadvantage individuals. he has join an elite group of people that are driven by power, money, and success. their is absolutely noting wrong with being successful but whatever happened to given back. i hope he can eat his piss poor choice of words. let's dismiss his candidacy.
I thinks it stinks how Woolard and all of his foolish followers hate people for getting a living wage and how the corporates keep raising rates and reaping record profits and then blaming the people who work hard every day or have worked hard all of their lives just to have to listen to this poppycock. Just how much is Woolard or his ilk willing to shell out for helping those who need it in an economy set up by the corporates. Just makes me want to do something evil myself. I've got news for you guys keep on pushing and me or someone else will break and than we very well may have an American spring too!
Woolard thinks people receive entitlements are victims. I would agree to some degree the middle class is victims not of their entitlements they have worked for but victims of BIG business that has redistributed the wealth to the top!
Housing is up but facing headwinds. Many can't get loans but one of the reasons for that is many of those who lost their homes want to buy again aren't first time buyers because of the failed BUSH economy.
THOSE, YOU PEOPLE, REPUBLICANS, are so very anti-AMERICAN. They are the scum of the earth. I kept a log of taxes and fees that I paid in 2008, on utilities, (electric, water,) phone land line. cell phone, gas, state sales tax, which totaled, $175.00-$250.00 a month, plus property tax, payroll tax, medicare tax and income tax,(more than twice, the percentage that Mitt SAYS he paid,) I voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and I will vote for him again in 2012. I will never again in my life time vote for any republican. They are all crude crooks!!!
TOM HARTMANN:
The Mitt Romney campaign is still in crisis after a leaked video showed Romney deriding 47% of Americans who he claims are victims who don't pay taxes, and who are dependent upon government for everything. Romney argued that he doesn't need to worry about these people - and they represent the President's base.
But a new study by the Tax Foundation shows that those Americans Romney was referring to who don't pay federal income taxes aren't from Blue states - they're mostly from Red states. The top ten states with the highest percentage of residents who pay no federal income taxes are all in the South, plus Idaho. And each one of those states - with the exception of Florida - has consistently voted for Republicans.
Mitt Romney may have thought he was writing off President Obama's electorate - but in reality, he was writing off his own.
Unfortunately, Republicans have used racist dog-whistle politics in the South since Nixon to convince tens of millions of Americans to vote against their best interests. And they're trying to do the same thing today to convince poor, southern Americans that priority number one is to get the black President out of the White House.
-Thom
TM~~I live in one of those southern red states, (TN) where many of the people are under-educated, living in poverty, and think if they have a job paying minimum wage, they are very wealthy. Many of them watch fox and only fox, so that is what their mentality consist of, lies and propaganda. Some of these people are "friends,"??? and I am losing patience with them. Some of them continue to believe those racist, bigoted e-mails against Obama. I have tried to educate them with facts, but no success. After the election, I am sure some friendships will cease. I plan to rise above it and move on. I have had it with all republicans.
I use to live in Texas as well.
Arsenic in rice and in apple and grape juice. OMG what next?
We've been eating and drinking it this long and we're not dead yet.
There are TWO "47%'s" Romney was referring to and perhaps conflated:
1) The percent of American People who SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA and whose vote Romney will never win, and
2) The percent of Americans who pay ZERO FEDERAL INCOME TAXES.
Is there overlap? ABSOLUTELY. Does 100% of number 1 comprise number 2? NO! Many but NOT all! Does 100% of number 2 comprise number 1? NO! Many but NOT all! THINK Venn Diagram with a large but not complete overlap!
Romney communicated to his supporters who instinctively understood within context that he was first referring first to the ~ 47% of Americans who will vote for Obama no matter what; even if Obama drives the budget deficit up to $1.3 Trillion annually, debt to over $16 Trillion, U3 Unemployment over 8%, U6 Unemployment over 14%, Black Unemployment over 14%, takes over 1/5th of the economy via Government run healthcare, and stands by blaming a D-List movie producer for the truth that the Middle East is burning under his feckless foreign policy; and secondly that there are ~47% of Americans who do NOT pay a single dime of Federal Income Taxes even though many of them work, have some income and/or collect redistributed government benefits totaling over $30,000 annually, and pay payroll taxes and sometimes State Taxes.
Presumptive President Mitt Romney conflated the two ostensibly because they are both 47% and there is a large but NOT universal overlap between the two.
When President Romney said he doesn't need to worry about the 47% he was speaking about number 1 -- those who will vote for Obama precisely because Obama gives them Other People's Money and they've grown dependent upon these redistributed resources from womb -- if they can get out alive without being aborted -- to tomb, and thus will ONLY vote for the candidate who will preserve and protect this redistributed wealth and increase it over time.
As far as "victims" go there is no such thing as Affirmative Action for minorities, women, homosexuals, etc., apart from the perception that certain demographics are victims of perceived injustices, including but not limited to racism, sexism, and sodomic opposition.
I didn't realize the election was over. You said President Romney....Go away troll......
ROTFFL.
I'm pretty sure that Romney is one of the 47%. He can't deny it, he'd have to produce tax returns.
Well, we know his father was a 47%, so he should not be putting down the 47 percenter and you are right he feels his taxes are private. Millionaires do not pay taxes. He is a Rom Dumb.

Nation's 150 Million 'Starving, Filthy Beggars'

SALT LAKE CITY—Seeking to limit the fallout from a videotaped speech in which
he asserts 47 percent of Americans “pay no taxes” and do not take “personal
responsibility and care for their lives,” Mitt Romney hastily called a press
conference today to apologize personally to the “150 million starving, filthy
beggars [he] might have offended.”
Saying that he deeply regretted his choice of words at a private
$50,000-a-plate fundraising function in May—during which he argued “[his] job is
not to worry” about the lower-earning half of the nation’s populace—Romney
personally appealed to the country’s “dirt-caked garbage pickers and toothless
street urchins” for forgiveness.
“First and foremost, I would like to offer a heartfelt apology to all the
whores, junkies, bums, and grime-covered derelicts out there who make up nearly
half our nation,” a visibly contrite and solemn Romney said outside a campaign
stop at a local high school. “Let me assure you that I in no way meant to offend
any of the putrid-smelling, barefoot masses out there. My campaign is not about
dividing this nation, but about bringing all sides together—the rich, elegant
members of the upper class, as well as the 47 percent who are covered in flies
and eat directly from back-alley dumpsters.”
“I am fully committed to building a better future for every American,” Romney
continued, “and that means ensuring all 150 million grease-and-urine-soaked
members of our society get a fair shake.”
The Romney campaign reportedly scrambled into damage-control mode after the
video leaked Monday, issuing a statement late last night stating that the
intended target of Romney’s remarks was ingrained big-government largesse, not
the “hordes of uneducated, loathsome scum who unfortunately populate this
country.”
However, with Romney’s comments continuing to dominate the news cycle today,
the campaign opted to convene a press event to allow Romney to speak directly to
the nation’s “grimy panhandlers and coke-addled whores” so that he could issue
an apology and explain his familiarity with their struggles.
“I know just how hard it must be to get through a miserable, destitute life
that is rife with crying babies whose shrieks consistently disrupt the affluent
members of society who actually contribute something to this world,” said the
GOP candidate, adding that he wanted to make amends for his recent statements
and reach out to what he called the country’s “snaggle-toothed street people”
and “hell-spawned savages.” “I know it can be challenging to wake each morning,
covered in your own feces and refuse, and get back out there on the streets to
beg for spare change and food scraps, always one step from dying right there in
an alley.”
“I know your challenges, and I am ready to fight for you,” he added
Romney also said he recognized that the hardships of the nation’s low-earners
are made more difficult by the fact that so “very, very many of them are
drug-addicted, high-school-dropout single mothers and fathers who sleep in
gutters while sewer rats nibble at their necrotic flesh.”
In an effort to right his campaign and rebuild his image, Romney promised to
bring his message of compassion and economic opportunity to the “ramshackle,
mud-floored huts” in which half of all U.S. residents live.
“Let me make this absolutely clear: I have the utmost respect for all of the
filth-encrusted, lesion-covered degenerates of this nation,” Romney said. “In
the coming weeks, I look forward to meeting real Americans in their squalid,
roach-infested hellholes in every corner of this country. I promise to stand up
for every one of you, even the 47 percent of you huddled together for warmth,
fighting your own family members for moldy crusts of bread as you wallow in your
own excrement.”
Added Romney, “And I look forward to serving you as your next president.”

Hm. Mrs Romney said that her husband did everything with his heart. He came to this country and lived his lst few years on welfare. He worked hard for his money. Can we say the same for Mitt Romney? NO! Maybe that is the reason he is struggling in his race for President of the US. Plus Romney has no interest in serving all Americans. I agree that we do not know if Mitt belongs to the 47% since we have not seen more than one year of his tax returns. The GOP does believe in REDISTRIBUTION if it is this for the wealthy. "values of the selfishness" is the moto of this party.

Was Jesus married? OMG where is Donald Trump? Jesus is in real trouble if can't find his marriage certificate! I can here it now oh my God where is it! I hope he doesn't ask for his birth certificate too!
He could have been the bible says he was "FULLY HUMAN".....and there is the wedding where he turned the water into wine.....does not say who's wedding that it is. In most cases he did not perform these types of Miracles. So there has been some speculation. I think Jesus was conceived by God and Mary......so what better "Father could one have?"

We knew that all along, didn't we?
Duh!
Mitt can't remember life before Bain Capital. For him, that's when life REALLY began. All the other stuff happened to Mom and Dad and he picks and chooses what to remember, if it fits into his narrative.
Romney comes across to me as not being able to remember a lot of stuff during his time at Bain either. Guess he didn't get the "People who live in glass houses" memo.
He hopes his lie about the rose will let him come out smelling like one...
No matter what the outcome, I'm sure he'll think that anyway. Let's not forget he's a legend in his own mind. Did you guys hear the part of the video where he said if he's elected President, he won't have to do anything and the economy will get better? Can you believe that?
Instead of an etch-a-sketch, he should carry a tel-a-prompter in his pocket.
Does anyone know why Mittens won't talk about his time as governor of Mass. Must have been a diseaster. Seems Mitten's family got a lift from the government once upon a time. Be careful what you let come out of your mouth Mittens. Ann Romney is no more believable than Mittens--neither is his son. We are all parasites to him--presidency is just another project to him. Can't believe him or trust him with interests of working middle class or the poor. Again, WHERE ARE HIS TAXES?
Just goes to show yu he would sell his mom to get in
I am so disgusted at Romney's comments! I am that 47 % but I pay dear taxes unlike him! I am a single parent that have been struggling for 26 years! My son is 27 years old so he doesnt qualify for me to have a deduction! I have paid for his education cash and credit card! So he wouldnt have a student loan to pay for! I earn 50000.00 (fifty thousand a year)! I dont have discounts on my tax return! So I pay 12000.00 (12 thousand)a year incomtax!!!! I am not a free loader!!!! I have never asked for social assistance! But I have never got anything in return! What is he talking about! The medium income is not 200000.00 (two hundred thousand ) like it seems to be implied! I earn 50 thousand a year being self employed but losing my buisness due to Rick Scott (Republican)passing a new law favoring Insurance companies and not the insured! Amazing that citizens are not aware of this devastating law against consumer! But back to 47 % ......I pay my taxes but dont have discounts becasue I dont have capital gain accounts!!!!! Sad very sad! Retirement accounst are a joke in this country! I can only contribute 5k a year????? That means nothing! This past year earnings at a great stock market come back accoring to my accountant (2.50%) wow a whole wopping 230.00 on a 5k investment!! Wow I am rich!!!! This is a joke!
I can only contribute 5K to my IRA a year! Wow I am making big money ayear!!!!!
Insurance????? Big heatlh care scam there is! I work in that field! I cant afford healthcare! and never had!
Like I said before, Robbinme came from 47% parents but he got possessed by the Antichrist
Did you see him on TV trying to swing the Latino vote with this story. Trying to now pretend he does not want them to self-deport, and to hell with the dream act. Yet, they should vote for him anyway. After all his father was born in MEXICO.
