Ed Schultz, who has been absent from The Ed Show during the past week, publicly confirmed today that his wife, Wendy, is battling ovarian cancer.
Ed called in to his radio show this afternoon to make the announcement (click here to listen).
"Last Wednesday this time, we found out that Wendy has ovarian cancer," Ed told guest-host Mike Papantonio, pausing to compose himself. "It's been a real jolt to say the least, I mean it shakes you to your bones. But she's a tough girl."
"She went through surgery yesterday. The doctors feel like they got it all of it," Ed continued. "It was a very successful surgery, but we got a long way to go."
Ed said Wendy is "deeply touched" by messages of support, via social media (Facebook and Twitter) and email.
"The prayer warriors across of America who have just gotten into this and gotten behind her and her family, we can't thank everybody enough."
Ed also thanked his staff at both his radio and TV shows for covering for him during what he expects to be a prolonged absence from each program.
"Doing a radio and TV show isn't exactly what I'm thinking about right now," Ed said. "I'm going to be with my wife through all of this."
"We both feel like we've been through the ringer, and you lose track of time, you lose track of what you're doing. And everything changes, but we're going to be OK. We're going to get through it."

Get Well Soon Wendy My Prayers are with you and your family
God Bless you and your Family.
A speedy and complete recovery to your wife!!! We miss you on the air, but your love and caring will make her recovery easier.
My heart goes out to your wife and yourself, I am a survivor of cervical cancer, had surgery in 1997 and have had no problems since the hysterectomy. I only hope your wife has the same great results.
My thoughts and prayers are with Wendy and Ed during this brief intermission of their very busy lives. Wendy HAS to be a tough woman to be married to Ed, and I know that she will beat this awful disease. Lots of hugs, Wendy. Love ya, Ed.
Please also remember "IF HE BRINGS YOU TO IT, HE WILL BRING YOU THROUGH IT" I firmly believe this. My thoughts and prayers are with you both and your family
I hope with all of my heart that Wendy pulls through however I do not understand "IF HE BRINGS YOU TO IT, HE WILL BRING YOU THROUGH IT"
"Think of how many who have died after they were brought to it"
I don't believe that He brought it to her. I believe God is as sad about this as we all are. God does not zap people with cancer. . . or anything else. He will get them through it, though. It's not God's fault. Stuff happens! But God is there when it happens. Our prayers are with them both. Ed is a great husband to put his wife first - "in sickness and in health" as he promised to do. I love them both.
Rusty Van Patten,
i agree.
Those prayer warriors are mighty Ed and Wendy! Sending thoughts and prayers from the other side of the 'aisle' .. We wish you all the very best and rest assured that we know the love of your family and your faith will see you through it. God bless you --
Wendy has has been a selfless champion of the poor and downtrodden. May the Lord wrap his arms around her, heal her, and give her back to the world, healthy and happy. We will be praying for a complete recovery, Ed and Wendy, and you both will be back in no time.

Ed, I just read on Facebook about Wendy. First, I want to say how sorry I am to hear about her ovarian cancer. But, I also, I know how awful and terrifying it is. My mother has had ovarian cancer and was CURED several years ago! She is doing great! I know Wendy has already had surgery, and I'll bet you love her surgeon just about now, and I don't know where she had the surgery, or who did it, but my mother went to Memorial Sloane Kettering, and Dr. Barrakat did the surgery and took care of her after that, so if you ever need anyone else, I cannot tell you how much I love this man and all the people at Memorial Sloane Kettering! My Mom and I are best friends, and her cancer was the worst thing that happened to her, to me and our family, but we were also so lucky to have so many people that prayed for us and wished us all well! We aren't religious, but we are spiritual and we all believe in the power of prayer, good thoughts, affirmations, whatever you want to call it! Please know that we are all with you and Wendy and your whole family, and we are praying for all of you. We miss you, but we are with you all the way!
Prayers are with you Wendy and Ed. We all wish you well. May God Bless.
My heart goes out to Ed and Wendy.
Ed, I have even more respect for you now, for making the right decision to stay with your wife.
May God bless you both, and your family, during this time.
