Declining confidence in the nation’s economic prospects appears to be the most powerful force influencing voters as the presidential election gears up, undercutting key areas of support for President Obama and helping give his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, an advantage on the question of who would better handle the nation’s economic challenges, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.
Despite months of negative advertising from Mr. Obama and his Democratic allies seeking to further define Mr. Romney as out of touch with the middle class and representative of wealthy interests, the poll shows little evidence of any substantial nationwide shift in attitudes about Mr. Romney.
But with job growth tailing off since spring and the Federal Reserve chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, wondering aloud whether the labor market is “stuck in the mud,” the poll showed a significant shift in opinion about Mr. Obama’s handling of the economy, with 39 percent now saying they approved and 55 percent saying they disapproved
WTF? The Ed Show is still around? yawn..
And kick'in your asses every day
Polls are so people can bump their chops and get paid for it.
They mean nothing in July.
People really don't make up their minds who to vote for until the get in to the voting booth.
And if robme was leading, (hard to type that without laughing) you and the rest of the teabaggers would be soiling your diapers with glee. We know how you ppl work...lol. Besides, if you knew anything at all you would have realised that there are very few undecided voters in this country.
ads gots ta be workin. our troll polls are hot to trot on Ed's blog....................
We all have to sit back and admire Obama and his creativeness. To claim that entrepreneurs and businesses do not create jobs- but then to have him claim that he has created millions of jobs is just about as silly as anything I have ever heard. The arrogance and chutzpah is certainly uncanny.
When Candidate Barack Obama took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, he had some strong words for his Republican opponents.
"[I]f you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters," he proclaimed, "If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from."
LMAO
Was Candidate Obama LYING THEN OR President Obama LYING NOW
And your point is, Mr. LMAO? President Obama was correct in 2008, and is correct now. All the right wing has offered to date is reruns of the "trickle down economics" disaster. Have you actually listened to anything the president has said? Can you tell us of a single lie that he told? What has been strikingly different is his disinterest in maintaining the old "Us vs Them" battle, pitting rich against poor against middle, one race/religion/etc. against everyone else. He simply hasn't bothered to indulge in gutter politics. What we actually from Republican legislators is an agenda focused exclusively on "making Obama a one-term president," and to hell with the survival of the country. In fact, we have actually seen Republicans vote against their own proposals merely because President Obama said, "Sounds OK to me." That's nuts! Now we have these Republicans insisting that we must give even more money to the rich to "spur job creation." Note that this is what our govt actually did from Reagan through Bush. Look at the results: Far fewer - NOT more - jobs, at worsening wages. The Republicans keep trying to recycle trickle-down economics over and over, having nothing else to offer.
It's the Republican'ts who falsely campaigned on a platform of "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs" in 2010. Once in office, all their talk about jobs evaporated. Instead, Republican Governors are firing teachers, firemen and police officers, attacking public workers thru union busting for what they claim the need to balance their budgets. Meanwhile we have had 36 straight months of Private Sector Job Growth and the best sustained growth in Manufacturing in 2 decades.
Obama's loans (not bailout) saved the Automobile industry. GM is once again the number one car company in the world and had a record $6.7 billion profit in 2011. Chrysler had its best profit in 13 years, net profit is up 300% in the 1st quarter of 2012. How many jobs were saved? The potential failure of one or more automakers would have cut up to 2.5 million jobs in the first year as production ground to a halt throughout the industry, according to the Center for Automotive Research. Think not? The U.S. motor vehicle manufacturing industry employs 880,000 workers, including those who work in the large auto parts manufacturing sector, as well as those who assemble cars. Motor vehicle and parts manufacturers also have a major influence on other industries in the economy as well. Building motor vehicles requires vast quantities of materials from, and creates many jobs in industries that manufacture the steel, rubber, plastics, glass, and other basic materials. It also spurs employment for automobile dealers; automotive parts, accessories, and tire stores. automotive repair and maintenance shops; gasoline stations; and highway construction companies...not to mention the neighborhood diner. Every auto plant job generates another five jobs among suppliers and the surrounding community. Even if there is no auto plant nearby, your community may depend on auto manufacturing. The auto industry is one of the biggest purchasers of aluminum, copper, iron, lead, plastics, rubber, textiles, vinyl, steel, computer chips and more.
People tend to forget, this is not the first time a company has been bailout by the government before. Harley-Davidson was bailout, Chrysler was bailed out, Penn Central Railroad, Lockheed, the Airline industry after 9/11...least we forget.
Wonder why Obama felt the need to bailout anyone. I mean- if companies don't create jobs, only government does- then why bailout something instead of just creating from scratch?
Sometimes- I get the impression that fool Obama is clueless- other times I amm much more certain...
ED,
why didn't you ask Patacki what GOVERNMENT PENSION he is relying on?
Should he have lifetime for years served? How about HIS health insurance?
On the voter ID issue, this isn't all an urban issue. Millions of the elderly, disabled and rural poor are being shut out. At a very local level, our governor moved the DMV from the largest town in this county way out to a town on the opposite end of the county. There is no public transportation out here. Millions of people in small towns throughout the country don't drive, and can't afford cars. This is reality in our post-jobs, post-social safety net country. It should be illegal to use measures like the voter ID mandate to deny citizens their right to vote.
You are painting a picture that is seemingly built upon hyperbola. I doubt there are "Millions of people in small towns" who can't afford cars. There are a lot who don't drive because of age, etc. I would suggest a significantly higher number of people in large cities who don't drive because of finances. Available public transportation and high cost of parking, etc cause this.
But if you think used cars are too expensive- then I wonder what you think the root cause of that is?
They just did the exact same thing here in my town in Michigan. Only it was the polling facility they moved. From a location easy to get to, to a location way out of the neighborhood on the opposite end of the county on a deserted road between three cemetaries. There is no public transportation out here. If like myself you don't drive, are elderly or disabled, it makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to get out to vote.
Republicans'ts have conspired with the Koch brothers who have funded efforts to thwart 21 million Americans from voting and Koch dollars helped write and propose voting suppression bills in 38 states. Voter suppression laws passed around the U.S. will put ballot boxes out of reach or millions of Americans eligible to vote, many of whom are African American, Hispanics, low-income poor, physically disabled, students and seniors. Because they understand they have alienated all but the 1% and corporations they represent.
Wisconsins Gov. Scott Walker is a dupe doing the bidding of the Koch brothers. Koch Industries was the 2nd biggest contributer to Gov. Walkers 2010 campaign. Now he's manipulating your constitutional right to participate in elections by demanding that every voter have a picture ID in order to vote. But he then closed 10 DMV offices in democratic districts where people need go to get their ID's in order to extend hours in republican districts. Just like efforts by Ohio's Gov. Kasich to manipulate early voting, mail-in votes and same day registration. And just like efforts by Gov. Rick Scott in Florida to knock 188,000 citizens off the voter rolls, using invalid DMV purge lists. Paper Please! A scary thing considering the 538 vote margin in 2000 Bush/Gore. There excuse is to prevent voter fraud, but there is no voter fraus. The State of Pennsylvania actually admitted that in their affavavit before the Supreme Court. They cannot produce one case of voter fraud as evidence. This attack on our voting rights is an attempt to hijack our democracy. Why do we allow the Koch Brothers, Scott Walker and the Republican party to slowly but methodically turn this country into a fascist state. It's all reminiscient of early Nazi party in 1930's Germany. The historical parallels are frightening.
Paul- is paranoia rampant in you family?
The last voter fraud we had in this country was when the Supreme Court ordered the recount stopped before it was completed and Florida declared Bush the winner!
Oh boo hoo.. Get over it. The News outlets declared Bush the winner after they did a recount on their own.
Are you people still whining about that?
Are you still whining about Obama being elected in a landslide?????
Hey, he didn't have to cheat. Ho, ho, ho.
News outlets don't declare winners. They report winners.
Rusty by definition: "inept and slow through lack of practice or old age" seems to fit. And what a name, your parents must not have liked you. You and C.Mill must be retired military or federal workers.
Lol. Love the way liberals take a whine, and without any whine-back, try to turn the tables and make it appear as something else. Mom has learned this trait from Obama.
Patriot- equally funny- no- I've always tried to be a productive American and not a sucking sound Federal Worker.
If we assume that nothing gets greatly worse like a major Middle East war or complete European economic collapse between now and November, we will be seeing a second Obama term. The economy in swing states like Ohio, Virginia, and Florida are actually improving. If President Obama gets criticized for the bad economy nationally he should get credit in states where the economy is getting better. Ohio is seeing a greatly improved manufacturing sector due to the auto bailouts. Virginia has a relatively low unemployment rate due to that fact that government related high technology industries are doing a brisk business. Florida has seen the foreclosure crisis bottom out and modest economic gains are now being made. No one is saying the economy is booming in any of these states but modest growth is lowering unemployment rates. If you are going to criticize President Obama's handling of the economy then you also must give him credit in swing states including Iowa where there are improvements and lower unemployment.
While there are GOP Governors in these three swing states we need to remember that Governor Kasich in Ohio is hated because of his attempts to outlaw the collective bargaining rights of union employees. This initiative was turned down by large numbers. Governor McConnell is disliked for his strong antiaborition stands including his attempts to have all women seeking abortions to have vaginal ultrasounds something many women abhor and equivocate to state sponsored rape. Governor Scott in Florida is truly hated by large numbers of Floridians who have a buyers remorse for Scott's right winged policies from his voter purge lists to his hard core stances on issues such as drug testing for welfare recipients even though no data exists for voter fraud cases or even higher drug usage amongst welfare recipients. So these GOP Governors are deeply unpopular in their states many may not be reelected.
Mitt Romney has huge problems getting to the magic 270 electoral votes. We are looking at a ten-ten-270 situation. Roughly speaking analysts have a 10-10-270 way of describing this election cycle. Ten percent of the people in 10 swing states will determine who gets to 270 electoral votes. Romney has huge issues amongst two groups of voters: independent women and Hispanics. Substantial groups of independent women are appalled by the GOP's war on women. Don't expect independent women voters who support a woman's right to choose, support family planning and birth control programs for women and young girls. The GOP has supported over 1100 bills that restrict a woman's access to abortion or family planning/birth control programs since 2011. The GOP has written off independent women voters for 2012 because in the swing state's GOP Governors have signed many anti-women's reproductive and antiabortion rights bills into law.
The Hispanic vote has been completely written off as well by the GOP. The GOP has filibustered the Dream Act in December,2010. The filibustering of the Dream Act was political suicide for Republicans. President Obama leads Romney amongst Hispanic voters by nearly 50 points. Romney has said that he opposes the Dream Act. So much for the GOP making up that nearly 50 point difference in polls. It is also important to note that in numerous swing states Hispanics will play decisive rolls this election. Yeah, I am talking critical must win Romney states like Ohio, Florida, and Virginia.
The GOP is becoming a party of the old, surly, white, bigoted, and increasingly geriatric voters. Young voters will not find much to be excited about in the GOP. Educated white males with college degrees think GOP policies are bad for America. The GOP is playing the fear card because this year more babies were born to minority women than to white women. Young white women are choosing not to have children because they can not afford to have babies even with steady male partners. Jobs are hard to find for college educated men and women. Wages and salaries are stagnant while babies are extremely expensive. The GOP has also opposed to the Affordable Care Act that would make health insurance more affordable for young parents. The GOP's policies will help create a non-white majority of Americans mostly because it is so expensive to have children that college educated people are not even replacing themselves anymore. It should also be noted that once minority women get an education they too are having much smaller families.
This election will be razor thin but don't expect any amount of negative advertising to really swing the election to Romney. President Obama's policies have kept the economy from turning into the Great Depression II. The President still have work to do for improving employment for the Main Street economy. Wall Street is doing very well with corporate profits at a record $2 trillion last year and taxes at all time lows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is at 12,500 points or higher. So the crux of the problem is employment on the Main Street economy. The GOP blocked 3 million jobs that would have been created with the American Jobs Act in August,2011 and the filibustering of the Small Business tax credit that would have created one million jobs. So all in all Romney has a tough uphill climb to make when saying he will be a good alternative to President Obama on jobs. Romney has outsourced six thousand jobs at Bain Capital from 1999-2003. Remember Romney owned this company and was CEO, executive, and president during this time. Romney is "Mr One Percent" and the "Outsourcer" in Chief. Besides why does he have his money in Bermuda, Switzerland, and the Cayman Islands when his money should be invested in America?
I hate to break it to you, in Florida the economy is not improving. This is one Florida swing voter that will not be casting a vote for Obama.
Then I guess your idiot gov was lying. Don't get your panties in a knot, we have an idiot gov here too.
Lying Romney campaign ad:
To Jack of Gilchrist Metal Fabricating:
You piece of s*** motherf***er. Did you not watch the WHOLE video of what President Obama said about working people getting help from the government because of infrastructure? (roads and bridges) And then find out you and your traitorous family took a fortune in tax dollars from the government to start a business? Sad , man, soooo very disturbing… CAN YOU SAY HYPOCRITE?
Tell me please, what better definition of TRAITOR than someone like YOU? Someone who would get on a National forum and lie to the American PEOPLE for that silver spoon trust fund baby Mitt Romney… How much money did you take for your seditious activity? The Concerned Citizens of American are going to make it our job to make you accountable for your Un-American activities consciousmc.blogspot.com
These kind of rants are quite disturbing, it is hard to believe that a person with any intelligence has to use profanity and inflammatory rhetoric to get their message across. You lose all credibility as does the Concerned Citizens of America.
Of course because you aren't doing so good the whole state is just like you, really go see a professional your delusions are getting out of hand. Always whine when you don't get what you want, sorry but after the ditch the GOP put the country in you can't whine when the country hasn't been towed out of the ditch especially when the GOP has done such a good job at disabling the tow truck.
At least spoact can speak factually. And I agree " it is hard to believe that a person with any intelligence" would vote republican or believe their crazy talk. As for me I am a logical minded person and can see past the GOP distortions. The economy would be doing fine if the party of "NO" would start working for America and not for their own greed. I guess that's why the more intelligent people are on the east and west coast and the idiots (republicans) live in between the coasts.
Being from NY, sad to see Pataki has partook of the teabag koolaid.
Governor Petaki smeared all public employees with his comments by lumping us all into the few situations in California and elsewhere where there may be a relationship between the fiscal problems of municipalities and public union contracts. He shows his ignorance of what has truly happened in Wisconsin as Walker manufactured a fiscal crisis for his own political motives and blamed public employee unions. Not True! At the same time Walker was cutting public employee pensions and medical benefits he was giving tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy for about the same amount he was cutting from public employees. The results: Wisconsin is 49 out of 50 states in job creation losing another 13,000 jobs this month; Education is being crippled by cuts; voters are being disenfranchised; sweet heart deals are being given to Republican corporate donors (Skyward); long planned rail transit plans dashed, low income people have had taxes raised as the tax credit limit has been raised; the state is in the worst condition in terms of moral and the concept of "public good" and the Wisconsin Idea have been discarded. Look for Walker to be indicted soon as some dozen of his former appointees in Milwaukee County have already been indicted or given immunity to testify. Governor Petaki, be careful of the dogs you lie down with and don't believe what Walker is spinning about Wisconsin as he goes about the country raising money ($30M+) for his political war chest. Mr. Dyson, I realize you were on a different subject, but I wish you had called Petaki on his incorrect slander of public employee unions.
Private Sector people would have taken care of 9/11 ....... ALL those Public Employees were NOT needed. The man sounds like BACHMANN !
Patacki said Public Sector ( Police / Firemen / Teachers ) are NOT needed. Private Sector people will take care of EVERYTHING ! MORON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why did MED just nod when Pataki talked about "handing a check to a union"? Public employees, unionized or not, hold REAL jobs delivering our mail, teaching our children, protecting our food supply, running our national parks, tracking epidemics, etc. etc. etc. They also are consumers supporting the business community and paying taxes to help the system keep going. I don't see why Pataki was welcomed as a "reasonable Republican".
46% Democrats polled
35% Republicans polled
I really doubt that only 35% of Republicans will turn out, besides President Obama has lost the independent vote on top of that. This poll is a joke.
Right davy you like polls where 99% polled are republicans so you can hang on to your delusions that Mittens will grow on people but fact is as bad as Obama's unlikeable numbers are Mittens has more people disliking him then he has that like him. No candidate in US history has ever been so disliked by so many.
