Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, has no qualms about stating his view of the obvious: Efforts to enact gun control legislation aren’t working.
So in the wake of the Aurora, Colorado massacre that has claimed 12 lives so far, the nation’s top gun control advocate is seeking to change the debate about gun control.
“We just need to re-frame this whole conversation away from being part of the political debate,” he said today. “We need to expect more of ourselves and more of our leaders. There’s a disconnect between the interests of the American people and what our politicians are doing.”
The Brady Campaign, named after Ronald Reagan assistant James Brady, wants to reboot the national conversation and part of that, it seems, means taking its name off the masthead. The group will launch a new website later tonight called wearebettterthanthis.org (it’s not live yet) that will play down its sponsorship by the Brady campaign.
The idea, he said, is rescue the debate from the poles on either side of the gun control issue. The new site will feature a petition demanding politicians start talking about gun violence and how to prevent it. “It begins at the top with the president and Mitt Romney offering more than sympathy,” Gross said

Another tragedy. But this is just another symptom of an underlying problem. As I see it, the main cause is a general degradation of the mental health of the population. Those assault weapons and clips with more than 5 rounds IMO should be banned. My life long love just passed away yesterday. He was a local TV personality who had a children's program for years. His name was J.P. Patches and he brought joy to millions of children over the years. The last time I saw him in person was for a benefit to raise money for Seattle Children's Hospital. It was the best show and concert I've ever been to for a fund raiser. His last public appearance for his retirement party was last year. His blood cancer was taking it's toll. He worked tirelessly for the benefit of children since before I was born. He's sure going to be missed around here. We sure loved him here in Tacoma.

The NRA is nothing but the chief salesmen for the gun manufacturers. I can only imagine how much money the NRA is raising for their coffers before this latest group of victims is put to rest. Anyone who would need an assault rifle to go hunting needs a new hobbie. NO ONE NEEDS AN ASSAULT RIFLE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SWAT TEAMS, MILITARY END OF STORY. One question about this tragedy that I have is why didn't opening the emergency exit door set off an alarm? I could have easily missed this. Does anyone know?
Indeed a good question. But he could have just shot it open, but it sure would have given people a chance to run. even a few seconds. But exit doors are set to be able to be open. But I would think it will known to the staff in the theatre that it was left open. And what no out side surveillance cameras? But what good does it do if they aren't watching them?
Because, as I understand it, he came in the theatre through the normal entrance and then went out the emergency exit, blocking it open while he got his guns from his car and then re-entered the theatre through the blocked open exit door.
Depending on the age of the building, it may not have been alarmed. Not all are.
The only film I have seen was a little messed up, some people ran from the place other were more zombie like, I guess not believeing what was happening.

I'm trained.... I've been in the armed forces. I have multiple certifications and training through most small arms, thanks that clears things up.
David, Just stay at the range if you want to shoot your weapons, you have been deceived, most people will never have to stand there grounds, and if they do i pray it's not with a 100 round gun.. in a crowed place, that's the problem, while you're standing, others are falling. A stray bullet has no name, or aim.

It's a freedom guaranteed by our founding fathers that we have the right too. It's been perverted by cowardly sociopathic monsters but it's still the right of the American people. I'm not really that worried about it overall. There is no way that legislation or an Amendment will ever pass. What bothers me is an executive order.

The right to bear arms relates because it is a right that we as a people have shared going back to well before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. However, you aren't going to get the full effect of the meaning for a short and admittedly flawed synosis that my meager writing skill could impart to them. I do urge you to read up though, it's inciteful. Yeah a gun was a tool back then, it still is today. The only difference is in how it is used. But then that's at the root of the discussion isn't it?

It's the argument of the left overall that magazine capacity is the problem at the moment. Again, this is a 2nd Amendment issue which pertains to the right to bear arms in as much as the restriction of that right is the problem.
You can try and restrict access to high capacity firearms ie- Assault Weapons Ban, but if someone wants one they'll get one. So what's the next step?

I'm sorry but could you explain this to me? (I'm serious. I'm not anti-gun. I even have one myself.) How can reducing the size of the magazine capacity infringe on anyone's right to bear arms? All you have to do is buy 2 magazines instead of one. If the guy that shot Gabby Giffords had a 15 round clip vs. a 30 (or was it 33?) round clip, he might have been stopped while changing clips and not so many people would have been shot.

It's about saving lives, and making sure every one has the right to live it.. A police officer shot and killed his wife today, I had 11 young students with me when she came in the hospital, She was young too. Shot by the one who was suppose to protect her, as well as all the citizens of the community.
I see this almost everyday, some go naturally, and some go by the hands of some one else
