Tax Returns are even necessary to be shown when applying for a mortgage. They are necessary because it shows the responsibility of the taxpayers and their honesty. The IRS is so use to think that those who are wealthy are more Honest than the rest of us that the wealthy hardly ever gets audited.
I think a thorough investigation is in order. Specially his IRA. Maddow brought up a good point. The law says that we can only put away $6000 per year in an IRA. If you are over 60 years old you can put all the earned income. Earned means through working not capital gains from investments. Now according with what he has, he is either over 17,000 years old or he got a rate of return for his IRA of over 10000%. Who do you know that has a rate of return in his IRA of over 30%. How old is Romney? And for how long has he been putting his whole salary and from where his salary came?

Yeah, you know I was thinking that. If there were something there, by now the IRS would have 30 agents going through his returns (which seem to be hundreds of pages each), and maybe they are. Unless... he was ripping off the government by using illegal tax havens offshore, like in Switzerland, and had taken advantage of the IRS amnesty program in 2009, in which case, the IRS couldn't legally say anything. Strange, eh? I'm not much for conspiracy theories. I usually leave that to the wackos on the right, but this seems pretty odd to me.
As for the President's alleged, "sealed records," I'm about as worried about them as his long form birth certificate, which is to say, not at all.
See, here's the problem. The president is pressing congress to raise taxes on himself. The only upside to that for Mr. Obama, is that it's good for the country. Romney on the other hand, is pushing to lower his taxes, and won't show us what his taxes were before. That's all upside, but only for NitMitt. That makes me think he, like Nixon, is and was a crook.

Chris, I think Romney won't release his 2009 and back tax returns because he struck an undisclosed deal with Bain for 10 yrs starting in 1999. I read it somewhere but can't find it now or I would post it but I'll keep trying. That's probably why he's sticking with the "I quit Bain in 1999" story thinking there was no way anybody could find out otherwise.
There was an article in the NY Times about an agreement with Bain where they pay him for certain deals through 2009 although he's no longer there. Sounds like a Sweetheart deal to me! No wonder he's so rich! For doing nothing!

A lot of wealthy people paid zero taxes after the market collapsed at the end of 2008. People who get their income from capital gains had more capital losses than gains that year. It's the same reason Ed's famous income inequality chart, you know the ones with the vultures on it, only shows the income for the top 1% up to 2007 and shows the middle class income many years past that.

France choose not to grant us land for any military bases but did give us land to bury our dead, which US cemeteries in foreign countries is US soil too. The money spent to maintain our military bases and cemeteries is US dollars.

Under the criteria described for McCain, he is considered to be a natural born citizen of the US. Speciifcally, the Naturalization Act of 1790 also covers the criteria for McCain to be considered a natural born citizen.
Interesting side note I learned while researching this...President Chester A Arthur was also challenged about his country of origin while he was campaigning for VP and after he served as President.
BTW...Arthur was white and a Republican. I guess the whole Democratic argument about how no other president has ever had his place of birth questioned is a mute point now.

He only has a German birth certificate, but he has his naturalization papers, that he received by going thru the INS Federal Court, in San Antonio, Tx. We brought him back to the states as an infant on my passport. However, he now has to present his naturalization papers, for obtaining his passport. I do not believe he would be able to get a voter photo ID with a German birth certificate. I could be wrong, but with the republicans dis-enfranchising as many voters as they possibly can, I don't see them honoring a birth certificate from Germany or any foreign country. But, he votes republican, so maybe they would leave him to vote. I think that the 2011 Congressional Research Report says that any person born of two US citizens is considered to be a natural born citizen. I personally don't care whether he voted Republican or Democrat or some other party...he is a citizen of the US and should be given all rights and privileges due to him.

All I know is that according to US LAW, a person born of two US citizens ANYWHERE in the world, is considered a natural born citizen of the US. Those of us who are born in the US, have a birth certificate as proof of citizenship. My son has naturalization papers as proof of his citizenship. Now he is not exposed to Germany calling him up to fight in their war either. Going through the naturalization process was the right thing for me and mine.
Show me your credentials that allow you to make the decision as to who needs to go thru the naturalization process. I am sure there are lots of illegals, who would like your service.
I am glad that you made the decision you did for yourself and your son. However, that does not change the law which states that a person born anywhere is a US citizen if BOTH of their parents are US citizens at the time of birth. For purposes of running for president of the US, which is what this discussion was originally about, that person is also considered to be a natural born citizen and is 100% eligible to fulfill the office of president.
What credentials your son has to show in order for him to be able to vote vary from state to state. Before he can vote, he has to register to vote and that is when he needs to produce the needed documentation...whatever that might be. Whatever those documents are should be accepted as PROOF by any poll worker if your son lives in a state that requires voter ID. that is just my opinion...what a state does or does not accept is subject to the whims of the legislators who define the law.
By definition...illegals should not be allowed to go through the naturalization process...they are ILLEGALS. If they come here legally, then they can go through the process.

Mitt Romney needs to come clean with his tax records. He needs to come clean about his offshore bank accounts. If Mitt does not want to do this then why is he running for our highest public office? It's Mitt Romney's responsibility to prove that Mitt Romney is clean and his tax records are legally all paid in full where they should be. Romney talks about more tax cuts for the wealthy and trickle down economics can create jobs for Americans. If this is the case than why doesn't Romney have all of his money invested in America? That is what financial planners call a well rounded portfolio some in growth, bonds, and foreign companies. This is why the returns are higher, or were higher until the global economy went to crap. Investing in the Global economy is what govt. wants Reagan and Clinton started us down this road. Now everyone is seeing that that was a big mistake!

I think i mentioned closing these loopholes. All companies do this, why do you think, GE, GM, Ford, IBM, and other have offices abroad. Lower tax rates and they do not have to pay any taxes on that money as long as it remains over seas. I agree this is wrong, but our current tax laws do not make it illegal. The bottom line if we are rich, middle class, or poor we want to make more money and keep more of it. Those calling for truth in Fast and Furious program got to H. R. Bill 6028 section 402. But also look at the date when it was implemented. Then call congress and ask them to interrogate the person who was in charge of starting the program. It was part of section 402 ( the funding ) every one wanted part of the government dough. Then ask yourself what happen. President Obama and Holder stop and cancel the program because it was costing the tax payers too much and someone died by one of those gun which was supposed to be "followed" by ATF to know the path of illegal gun trafficking.

A 401K that invests in foreign countries still sends a 1099 form to be reported on your tax return if its in some type of mutual fund.
Mitts money is different he sent it off shore and he does not report it because a foreign bank will not send a 1099 to be reported on an IRS tax return.
I know you will dispute this but in order to report the money you need this form and foreign banks do not sent out this form. Ask someone who works with tax reports if you don't believe me and I know that you will not...

Ethel...I have no idea if what you say is true and I will look into it...but the question is this...If I have $1,000 in my pocket after I have paid my taxes here in the US and I travel to the Cayman Islands or France or Switzerland and I open a bank account while I am there so that the next time I visit the money will be waiting for me,,,have I committed a crime? In my opinion...not a legal one, just my opinion....that money is not subject to any US taxes at all. The original taxes paid on the gross amount cover the responsibility of the taxpayer to the US for the infrastructure cost associated with the ability to generate the income. Since the money was invested overseas and is "protected" by the government where it is invested, there is no more "cost" associated with that money and is not subject to US tax.

If there is no 1099 then its not reported. A 1099 is required on earned 'INCOME' Mitt's money is INCOME. The money you take with you on vacation is not considered INCOME.
The 1099 is required so the IRS knows you're not putting too much money in it, at Mitt's age he's only allowed $15,000 a year.
Foreign banks do not submit a 1099 form to report on that income, there fore the money is NOT reported to the federal government and no taxes are paid.
Armand Hammer had done the same thing in the 90's and he was pardoned by Clinton when he left office in 2000 and all you right wing nut jobs wanted to 'hang Clinton in effigy for it' but its okay if Mitt does it .

As previously stated...if he paid taxes on the money in the US as income, he should be able to take the net leftover amount anywhere in the world and do with it whatever he wants. If that means investing it in Switzerland, then so be it. That country gets to tax the proceeds however they see fit. Just like the US taxes the proceeds from foreign investors who deposit money in the US.

President Obama has already proved his chops as President and who cares what grade he got in English Lit after he got elected to the Harvard Law Review and HIRED as a Constitutional Law Professor. Mr. Romney, on the other hand, is already known to have Swiss Bank accounts and other money in tax havens abroad and needs to prove he isn't hiding the fact that he's dodged doing his patriotic duty of paying any taxes owed the United States of America since he is applying for the highest job in the land.
