The monthly jobs report, to be released on Friday, could cast a shadow over President Obama's re-election campaign. The NOW w/ Alex Wagner panelists talk about what to expect from the upcoming report.
Tomorrow is going to be a pivotal day in the campaign for president. Tomorrow, we get the jobs numbers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release official employment data five times between now and election day. Every major poll says jobs are the top voting issue.
So tomorrow's numbers could make or break a candidate by November 6th. And let's face it, last month was a tough month for President Obama. Unemployment inched up and Republicans capitalized on it. But things are looking better. Researchers are predicting private sector job gains tomorrow. One estimate says we've added one-hundred and seventy six thousand jobs in the private sector. Even conservative estimates agree.
And this might be another sign that tomorrow's job report will be good:
Mitt Romney's not talking about it. Yesterday, Romney spoke for about five minutes and mentioned "jobs" one time. The president made three campaign stops today. Unlike Romney, he mentioned jobs a dozen times at every stop.
Just hours after the jobs report comes out tomorrow morning, President Obama is signing the highway funding bill. The new funding measure is expected to create or save three million jobs over the next two years.
And here's yet another reason the president can be confident: unemployment's been dropping since the stimulus plan kicked in. And it keeps getting better.
We've seen 27-straight months of private sector job growth under President Obama. Romney might want to brace himself for a tough day tomorrow.

Do ya think every hiring agent started working oovertime once the Obamacare ruling came down?
If my memory serves me correctly, it is our conservative friends who come on the vine and say it is not congresses responsibility to create jobs. It is the individual, to find a job, or create one. So it can't be Obama's responsibility either. It is the economy stupid. If you want businesses to have confidence to hire, train etc. There has to be some MONEY, coming in and moving around in the economy. You have to be spending, and buying, etc. ..... Well!
Interesting how a radical, right-wing congress will argue that it isn't their responsibility to "create" jobs, but it is up to the private sector. Simultaneously, however, they continue to blame our Democratic President for the slow increase in the number of jobs being created each month--all the while conveniently forgetting that it was the republican George W. Bush administration with its trickle-down philosophy that created the largest deficit in our history while raising the level of UNEMPLOYMENT at a horrifying rate. So, republicans can't be held responsible for the fiscal mess they've created, but President Obama can be blamed for not extricating us from that mess "fast enough". Interesting. Now--about that "private sector" stuff: republicans claim that if the private sector receives more tax breaks and are burdened with fewer regulations, then they will become effective "job creators." The only reason they're not hiring now is because the economy is doing so poorly and there's too much "uncertainty" about the direction the economy will move. Again--interesting. During the Bush administration, the private sector enjoyed enormous tax breaks and were the benefactors of many Bush policies that cut back on federal regulations. According to republican logic, Bush should have built a budget surplus while reducing the unemployment rate to about 2%. But that didn't happen. Instead, corporations made profits each year at record rates, workers watched as their wages remained stagnant or were cut and their benefits were eliminated. With tax breaks, deregulation, and the reduction of workforce and wages, these corporations were still not satisfied, and therefore did not "create" more jobs. Instead, the continued to cut jobs to increase their own profits. What is wrong with American voters that so many of them are still undecided about this election? Romney wants to reduce taxes even more for the wealthiest among us, thereby robbing the most vulnerable among us in order to benefit the richest, claiming, just as Bush and Reagan have, that this idiocy will benefit the middle and poor classes in America. Can't voters understand that this trick never works? It never has. It never will. According to the Bush/Romney plan, the rich get richer while the rest of us are cast into the abyss of poverty.
Mom- I would be tickled if Obama would just keep his policies out of the way from an economics standpoint. But... Ask the coal industry. Ask Manufacturing about Obamacare... His policies are by and large job killers. We understand your point- that Obama can't create a single job- and your concept- and mine- would also indicate that he doesn't take credit for good jobs data so long as it grows in spite of him.
I've copied your response and it will come in handy if by chance there is a good jobs month
Newsflash politics and the supreme court aren't the factors businesss uses as to whether to expand or not
obamacare puts no taxes on businesses, it really doesn't address economics much at all since it's about controlling health insurance costs
the fact young people can stay on their parent's plans means businesses may be more inclined to hire young workers for entry level positions because they won't need to give them health insurance since many will already have it
I didn't realize Obamacare had a loophole for hiring people who already have insurance? That's interesting.
Are you really thinking that is a good idea? Company A employs someone with siblings, and provides insurance for them. Company B is allowed to hire one of these siblings for an entry level position and not pay for their insurance?
I don't think you quite get the concept that they will already have insurance if the parents do and their under 26
furthermore this isn't based around employers providing insurance this is making it easier to access it so that if they don't already have insurance it will be easier for them as individuals to afford it
Cynical, I think we have yet to see the impacts of Obamacare on employment numbers or business expansion. Consumer spending does however have a direct impact of job growth and spending has been flat with slight ups and downs over the past months. The only thing saving Obama with the unemployment numbers is the magical way they reduce the workforce numbers every month.
Yeah right. That's the reason why your right-wing-nuts in Congress obstructed or block every jobs creation initiatives that President Obama put forward.
Furthermore, your stupidity can't allow you to understand that the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't have a "magical way they reduce the workforce numbers". It's crazy how you right-wing-nuts Obama haters rejoice every time you learn that things aren't going well for the country.
Bulboja, No rejoying here. As for Congress obstructing any thing, Obama has managed to spend 5 Trillion Dollars we don't have, how much obstruction could there have been? He said the Stimulus would create jobs and repair our infrastructure with those shovel ready jobs. I will never understand how the left can blame Bush for all the problems during his administration and completely over look the Democrat controlled House and Senates role, while at the same time excuss Obama from every thing, blaming the Republican controlled House.
The right said cutting taxes and deregulation would bring prosperity, they didn't. Now since Bush ran debt literally every dollar that Obama hs "spent" would have been one we don't have so no spending...no government....and you know the mandatory committments we've made is not how much we have in revenue and that any of the cuts needed for that you, the rest of the right and most of the country would not support
so how are going to change that deregulation and tax cuts haven't done that and they won't so lay out this elusive right wing plan
fact is it takes around 3 trillion annually to run the federal governemnt and who ever is in the white house in 2012 Obama or Romney will do nothing to change to that
2,
have you forgotten what bush put on the credit card, AND KEPT OFF THE BOOKS?
2 wars and medicare part D?
when President Obama took office he did AT LEAST TWO THINGS IMMEDIATELY. he ramped up the hunt for bin laden, and he said, "we will no longer lie to the american people about the cost of the iraqi and afghanistan wars", and he added them to the deficit (along with medicare part D), something W. DID NOT DO. ask mitch daniels what he knew about keeping the cost of the wars off the books.
i first noticed the phrase "democrat party", even though it had been used some before W. was annointed president, when W. did an interview with Juan Williams on NPR, claiming it was a 'mistake' in his "state of the union" address.
but as we soon came to learn, bush used the phrase ALL THE TIME, even in written communications. given his propensity for making up words, like sarah palin and others, this further convinced us of his ("rarely is the question asked, 'is our children learning'") limited and ignorant use of the English language.
there is no great mystery as to the use of this deliberate, CHILDISH, IGNORANT (bush, limbaugh, cheeeeney, etc) phrasing of "democrat party". it is a slur, a handy way to express contempt, a way to express the undemocratic"ness" of the democratic party.
wing-nuts, grow up.
Cynical, "who ever is in the white house in 2012 Obama or Romney will do nothing to change to that". Both Parties are addicted to taking our hard earned money and spending on programs the vast majority of the citizenry doesn't want nor need. The Conservative movement is the answer, Limit the Size of Government, Reduce Taxation, and Restore Personal Liberty.
And pretty soon you will be making 1850 wages and paying 2012 prices gee aren't the conservatives so wonderful trying for a better tomorrow by going back to yesterday.
Whom, If I have it right consumer spending drives the economy. If wages were at 1850 levels, either products would not be sold or their prices would be lower. Your assumption is a little off. This country worked well for the most part with a limited Federal Government. The Federal Government has grown beyond our ability to control it as seen by the waist and abuse of GSA, the poor achievement of our nations schools, fraud in the Welfare and Medicaid Programs, the Legislative powers of the EPA, etc.... Presidents, one after another, both Republican and Democrat have campaigned on cutting programs, yet none are ever cut. The Federal Government continually takes more and more from us in the form of Taxes to feed its unending hunger. Half the time I wonder if the purpose of a Government Job is to satisfy a need of society or simply provide an income for an employee. Even now both Obama and Romney are saying the Federal Tax Code needs to be revised, yet neither is talking about a simple easy to understand Tax Code that establishes specific rates depending on income or even a Flat Tax, viod of deductions, exempmtions, and loopholes. They intentionally keep it convoluted and confusing, placing one citizen over another. The answer is not More Government.
@2ez4u2c2 - I couldn't waste my time reading more of your comment after I read the idiotic phrase above. So, you mean that a manufacturer who sells his product for a loss can stay in business. You right-wingers are seriously silly.
@2ez4u2c2 - It's obvious that you are repeating the same lies that Mitt Rmoney and the Faux noise have been spreading for a while now. Click the following links and learn the facts.

Your laziness and your lack of interest in facts is pitiful. If you followed our politics, just a little, you would know how much Mitch McConnell and his minority GOTP in the Senate have abused the usage of the filibuster, for the simple reason to obstruct. They set a new record.

I hope that you know how to read/interpret a graphic chart.
Bulboja, The so called Bush's wars became Obama's wars the minute he took office. The so called Bush Tax Cuts became Obama's Tax Cuts the minute he signed the extension. Bush has not been in office for over three years yet you attribute Federal spending which has taken place after he left office to him. How does that work? Is Bush free to stop the wars, withdraw troops, or even modify tax law? Obama owns the debt.
Wow long is the right going to continue to not blame bush for things he caused......you like to pretend it's about shielding obama but it's just saying who started it and what policies get us into the mess we are in now denying that serves no purpose. It's pretty logical to look at how the recession was caused and the policies that started it so we will know what things don't work.
Your guy was playing capt. of the economic valdeez who crashed the damn thing in the first place so you can't attack the rescue boat for not moving fast enough as if they deserve all the blame.
So you suggest that Obama can instantly end these wars and just forget they ever happened? We were at war there you can just pull out in a week and do nothing. That's just stupid we've wasted too much to just give it now, think of the dead. So you'd have us just forget about or commitments in the region...even your republican friends want to put more troops into afghanistan and say obama is losing the war because we are pulling out to fast. There has to be an element of pragmaticism and living in the real world not ideaology land. So Obama wants to bring our troops home and has made efforts in iraq and afghanistan to end those wars and you neo-cons have said that was bad. Make up your mind. Obama wants to end the wars the republicans want to expand them.
The president doesn't write the budget and has no constitutional right to do so, that is congress. The reason we have the bush tax cuts is because congress waited until the 11th hour to act and the GOP blamed games with this. The GOP said if they were not all extended that they would block the plan procedurally raising taxes on hurting job creators. The middle class. Let's not forget that he signed it so he couldn't change tax rates even if he wanted to.
Bush ran up the surplus and went into debt so technically you should realize that debt and deficit are unavoidable. Every dollar the government would spend would be money we don't have. Fact is the fed cost about 3 trillion annually to run so unless we have no government.....
CC- we've pretty much beenthrough this before. Could you post one iota of proof that Bush deregulated?
In fact, not so long ago, Obama himself claimed that Bush added more to the net regulatory environment than Obama has.
I know it makes for good innuendo and sound bites, and I know tha kool-aid drinkers gulp it like like a camel coming off the desert- but it's a silly statement that is factless.
Cynical, There are two primary issues responsible for our economy. The abolishment of the Glass Steagul Act and modifications to the Community Reinvestment Act. Neither has been corrected by Obama. Even today variable rate loans are available and people can get assistance with down payments to purchase homes they cannot afford. Absent of regulation this will all happen again.
Obama can pass Health Care against the will of the people and the Republicans in the House and Senate but he couldn't end the wars? Right. OBL has been dead for over a year. Why are we still in Afghanistan? This is on Obama, regardless of who started it.
I don't see how you can continue to blame Bush or any one else while you completely dismiss the President's Role.
Hopefully for President Obama's sake, more people quit looking for a job, thus the employment rate will fall again.
Hopefully for the President's sake, more people quit looking for a job all together, thus dropping the unemployment rate.
It would be nice if the President's Job Czar, GE CEO Jeffery Immelt would stop taking tax payer funded stimulus and shipping jobs to China and India while shutting down domestic plants and slashing the wages of those remaining by 35-50 percent.
He's bringing jobs back to the US. And there's no such thing as a "jobs Czar".
Actually there is a "jobs tzar" or however one wishes to spell it....oh russian.....
Don't know what he actually does but I do recall a jobs czar position or at very least something like it, not at all certain but I think atleast that part of our dear friend's post could be true. Course the rest is utter nonesense.
But really who are these companies receiving stimulus money that is long since gone and outsourcing with it. Who are they? If this is true and/or important to you how do you feel about the senate not voting away oil subsidies? What about Bain? What about companies that outsource jobs? Romney is for that don't ya' know.....how about raising taxes on outsourcers
I gotta an idea and maybe the daves will agree. let's make Romney China's job czar!
just think how many jobs he might bring back to the USA....hey....now wouldn't that be somethin?
but here we go again....we have to have Romney's wife ok it first........shucks.
Well in China you can buy a Jeep for more then you can buy a Bentley, gee aren't the Chinese wonderful for our economy.
Oh yes, they seem to have their tin-foil hats tuned in to fake noise and lush limbrain.
As the director here at the Obama headquarters say. Write those people off, don't waste your time. Talk to sane and those who want to know the facts. Don't talk to or waste time on the t-evangelicals that could be reached with true and real facts. Thay are blind to facts and don't want to listen, they just rant on. Talk to those who say, "I notice you are wearing an Obama button."
People at the pool, were asking me about my Obama signs on my car. I offered to get her some, but she said no, she couldn't display one, but that she hopes he wins. She just couldn't see romney as president.
Question- are you liberals still enthralled with Warren Buffett?
let's see. some job growth or out s o r e cing. hmmm, yep it's too easy for me to see.
let's see, more teapub flap and the Joe Walsh mentality or actually doing something.
even the tea party tops don't want Romney. hmmm, shall I go against the only thing I agree with the tea party about? yep to easy for me to see...........
It really surprises me that when 80,000 new jobs are created it is a bad month. Isn't adding 80,000 jobs a lot better than losing 750,000 jobs per month like we were under President Bush?
Selective memory lapse syndrome For 1, just like how they keep repeating that Reagan economy was great while ignoring that under Reagan 7 million families went from workers to welfare as well as a new class of citizen was born...........the homeless. You know I just went back over this months topics and surprise every topic every post our little tea bagged republicans made was the same 5 post with different spins on the same 5 subjects, with the #1 subject being Obama is bad, like repeating the same crap will change it from crap to gold.
whomitmay #9.1 - I don't get it as to why the teaparty that was suppose to be about positive change has turned into such a hate monger group of people. The constitution which they seem to live and breath (not our constitution but apparently one they made up) is not about hate. It's like they are the bullies in school and get their kicks by just screwing with people. They are a sad bunch....
Ifor1-there could be 1,000,000 jobs added and the teapubs would still be lookin for the birth certs and deplomas.
they don't give a rats about anything but the me.
like it's been asked over and over and over and over again....what's the teapub plan?
hesback - sadly you are right and that is sad for the US. I'm with you I have no idea what their plan is.
For 1 that was media hype before the media did a back ground check on just who made up the tea bagged republicans that were being bused in to disrupt democratic town hall meetings on ACA. tea bagged republicans are 90% moral less majority idiots who Pat Robertson sold to Reagan back in 1979 and who the GOP gave lip service to every election cycle since. When they realized the Robertson wasn't going to create the christian nation they so desire they then found new leaders, being the true back stabbing low life low information voters they are they split into 2 factions with 2 leaders, you have the Koch brothers faction and you have Dick Army's tea bagged nation, the only reason they haven't broke out into a civil war is 1 thing, getting Obama out of office.
hesback- You're probably right about the TP people would be looking through birth records iif Obama had added a million jobs. In fact- that would be their only chance. Luckily for them, Team Obama has been so incompetent from an economic standpoint that it has lessened the need for the records search.
I think Obama would be much more comfortable fighting bc accusations that he is in trying to make it sound like he knows what he is doing.
And if governor romney was articulating a message people could look to and understand instead of just apple pie "oh beautiful for spacious sky" remarks Obama would really be in trouble
the right always wants to talk about how the economy means obama has no chance in any way of winning at all....but romney has yet to really inch out a real lead in any of the national data
so the fact that governor romney historically should be doing much better than he is says something
CC- unfortunately- you are totally correct on each point you've made.
The only reason I can find to vote for him is that Obama has a zero for his economics, and Romney couldn't help but to improve. On Foreign Policy- I actually think Obama has done a good job. I will support his "Plug'em before they surrender" policy versus capture them, but I only worry about the way he has supported uprisings in the middle east. Sometimes helping to overthrow a bad guy can lead to an even badder guy.
He hasn't supported any uprisings other than libya. In egypt we just stopped we just be willing to say mubarak was good guy. The rest are none U.S. related. The people of the middle east want change from the rule of nobles and clerics sad thing is many western interests want the opposite so we can have cheap gas prices.
I've just always been amazed at how partisan both sides have been on this. One would predict the Right would order a hit, with the Left howling at the lack of due process. For the Left to champion this, then for the Right to condemn it is befuddling on both sides.
GE's Appliance Park is a perfect example of President Obama's "insourcing" from China. THree years ago wages were slashed approximatelly 50 percent and health care premiums were tripled. This opened the door for GE to bring jobs back jobs from China recall hundreds employees to the plant. Also, it allowed Vice President Joe Biden "the blue collar guy" to visit the plant and claim victory for recovering economy. This is not a livable wage to raise a family on as far as buying a house, car and putting children through college. And at the same time, President Obama and Congress has handed GE millions in stimulus and bailout only to create jobs in China and India.
It's not just about creating jobs, it's about creating jobs that pay a livable wage to raise a family on. President Obama's partnership with General Electric is only serving to drive wages down in the United States and prop up those in China and India. It is a clever balance between massive outsourcing of jobs and re-insourcing those jobs back into American after the wages have been slashed. GE West Burlington, GE Appliance Park in Louisville, or GE Mebane are perfect examples.
Davey- I'm familiar withGE's antics in Burlington Iowa. Obama is very proud of that plant as well. Not so much the workers...
All of this name calling by thankful mom and whomitmay...all of the laughing, calling names, slandering....doesn't amount to a pile of crap.
The bottom line is:
Good bye Barack Obama. Its been a really bad 4 years and we really hate to see you go.
That's it.
Poor little johnny thought he was a mover and a shaker but discovered he was nothing but a funny little distraction without a thing worth saying. Right johnny you poor little innocent tea bagged republicans deserve better treatment then you give others. Whine us a river. Here is a clue johnny Mittens is hated by everyone but a few die hard silly people, the only house Mittens is fit to run is the outhouse but you could paint it white for him and then pretend you are like he is, rich.
Wow. whomitmay, where did you learn to write like that? You are right up there with Hemingway.
Just keep the message simple. Since Obama took over = Disaster. Country has gone down. Deeper in debt. Worse off. However you want to word it. With results like that....the current president needs to be replaced...wouldn't you agree?
And the American people will do that in November. So enjoy all of the cute talk. The party is almost over.
Where are our Democratic Party leaders today? With the announcement that only 84,000 jobs were created in June, the right-wing, anti-government, obstructionist republicans crawled out of the woodwork and began crowing about what they claim to be great victory. Yes--the American economy isn't doing well, and republicans claim that as a victory because it's been their plan since President Obama was elected to destroy the economy and overthrow the government to increase their chances of winning back the White House in 2012. Dozens of republicans are out today blaming President Obama for the situation we face, but where are the Democrats to remind Americans that the President has been working at improving the economy, that he's made significant progress--despite obstructionist republicans--and that every proposal and plan the President has put forward has been blocked by a republican congress that has only one purpose in being: to make President Obama a one-term president. Shame on our Democratic leaders for not speaking out today. As usual, you're apathy is opening the door again for another major republican victory in November.

Well you do have to remember that the right wing fake outrage and noise machination is much more organized compared to the otherside
