Former Labor Sec. Robert Reich digs into the lies Mitt Romney and Republican-affiliated U.S. Chamber of Commerce peddle on health care.
Republicans raise the curtain on the third act of the Obamacare lying game and Ed Schultz is ready for them!
Tonight, Ed will look at the new Republican misinformation campaign with MSNBC Political Analyst Richard Wolffe.
Then, Republican governors say they won't implement parts of the president's health care law. Why would these governors turn down free money and deprive their citizens? Ed will ask Robert Reich, former U.S. Labor Secretary, UC Berkeley Professor.
Conservative heads are still exploding over the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Obamacare. Van Jones, President and Co-Founder of the Rebuild the Dream, weighs in on the deranged fallout from yesterday's ruling.
This was suppose to be a bad month for President Obama. But he’s hold steady in the polls -- and that was before yesterday’s health care victory at the Supreme Court!
To sort it all out, we’ve got the Big Panel, including Krystal Ball, Democratic Strategist and former candidate for U.S. Congress, Steve Kornacki, Political Columnist for Salon.com (both Ball and Kornacki are also co-hosts of the new MSNBC program The Cycle), and Meghan McCain, MSNBC Contributor and Daily Beast Columnist and co-author (“America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom”).
Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling created a historic evening of late night comedy. Ed will have a recap of the biggest laughs.
And in the Big Finish, Colorado battles the biggest wildfire in the state's history, leading scientists say it's a sign of global warming. Ed will check with Michael Oppenheimer, Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs at Princeton University.

Fact check Romney...there's only 24 hours in the day....come one
Romneycare and Obamacare are like....the same
This murderous evil gargantuan tax that has the right pissing itself will affect probably 2% of people not the middle class
obamacare will save us billions
the gop has no plan to replace it with anything
the house plans to waste time trying to do a repeal vote that they know will go nowhere
every part of the law except for the individual mandate is outrageously popular
I hope those in Colorado will be taken care of, a terrible thing to lose one's home...very sad for those people. Even worse I forsee politicians trying to play games with them getting the emergency disaster funds they may need. Shame on anyone who would dare try to use the debt or defecit to justify playing politics with those affected and their livelyhood.
CC = RITE-On Brah ------ You and I - both Know that THEY Will Piss and Moan About The Relief That OUR Fellow Americans NEED in Colorado !!!!! Bunch -O- SICK TURDS That They Are !!!!
Once again the poor get another free ride in healthcare, I am sure that my taxes will not go up to cover the cost...I have taken my american flag that flies over my business and have turned it upside down, until Obama is gone...
COMMIE !!!!!!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
clyde,
apparently your love of country and patriotism are conditional.
When people insulted Bush they were anti-american guess they must be anti-american now.
Tired of Obama's evil satanic socialism and having to pay taxes why not move to beautiful somalia.....small government, no gun control, what little government their exists is religious.....no taxes.....a perfect place for a true american to appreciate america's greatness
Clyde, thank God there have been many men and women who have died on foreign soil to ensure you have the right to disrespect them the way your action does.
My dear Clyde. You are are where you are because some of the rest of us bot your products or services at one time or another. You think your better than the rest of us, buddy? Just because you have a business? You're where you are because of us. We kept your business going because we bot from you. The poor bloke who gets health care under medicare more than likely paid for it while he was working in years past. Would you rather he die so you can save on taxes? I human life less than your bottom line? The taxes you avoided because of the tax loop holes has to be made up for Just because you have a little more than the rest of us, your s--t doesn't taste like ice cream. You are where you are because WE put you there. Get it?
James Gonsalves Thats the stupidest remark of the week. You don't know it moron, but your about to get bit in the ass by your own president. Read the health care bill. And yes it is a TAX.
Dear Irish; Penalties are not taxes, by definition. The penalty you talk about will not be enforced. It says so in the bill. Why don't you read the health care bill instead of listening to the bimbo from Alaska who would like you to believe she has. Then write to Joe the P. and let him know, too.
JG
That is absolutely a bunch of BS. That is about as back door as Nancy Pelosie wanting it to be a Class D felony not paying for it. They made each and every one of you morons believe the rich is paying. waaaa waaa. Don't pay, then watch your tax filings in April. waa waaa. I guess i watch too much Fox news.
I guess you do watch Fox Bnews (or is it Snews)too much. You've allowed yourself to be brainwashed by those shills--Hannity and company, etc. Irish wise up. Your like the ones that Karl Rove knows he can manipulate because the odds are your one of the lazy ones who hate to read anything, except what you agree with. Open your mind. I'm trying to be friendly. It's a new world out there. It's twenty-effing-twelve man. The old policies are just that: old. The solutions to yesterday's probs won't work for today's probs. We didn't have China, India, South Koriea, Brazil etc chewing at our ass in the 50's. We do now and the rules have changed. Hell Wall Street is openly making deals with Chinese communists (and they are still communists, you know. Last year JP Morgan Chase actually exported twenty-five million in cash to China to build a manufacturing plant, and that is just the tip of the ice berg. Americans invested 1.3 billion overseas in 2000. In 2008, that figure rose to 3.8 billion. It's called a Capital drain, Irish. Wonder where the cash is to finance new mortgages, or where the cash is for small business to start up or expand? I'm talking about SMALL business, sir. Small businesses employ over sixty percent of the entire workforce (more when the economy is running at full tilt). Giant Corps sit on over two trillion in raw cash right now, at the behest of their Repub friends, so Obama doesn't get any credit for new jobs. Their plan is to put that money to work after the election, when it won't matter anymore, no matter who wins.
Lighten up man.
James
James Gonsalves Obama has plans for you anyway. He's already reading for you fools on The Post American World. Obama and Soros has plans for his little Robot Liberal Gerbils. Waaaa Waaa Your such a Fool.
.For your information, I am not a fool. I'm a registered Republican coming from a family with a long line of Republican office holders--a state senator on my mother's side, my father's brother was a federal judge appointed by President Eisenhower, and my cousin's husband was a Republican party state chairman. I served on a Republican County Committee in my twenties. I am now eighty-one years young, a retired management consultant with a university degree in Business and Economics. I come from the financial world. Spent 40 years there. I know what I'm talking about. It's obvious that you don't, given the tone and content of your responses.
I am a true Republican, not the hybred-nut-fringe type that has hijacked MY party and is now in control of it. I am embarrassed to admit I'm a Republican. Even though I speak in the Republican language of the past. I can't help it if the democrats are such copycats. They've stolen our issues and the consumate @!$%#s like you let them.
I don't suppose you know your AMERICAN history as you probably were too busy reading comic books in high school to pay attention to the teacher when she/he quoted the text book on the subject of the Know-Nothing party of the 1840's and 50's. They opposed Lincoln, you know. They were the T-party of that era. Mostly, they hated the n------ers, like a lot of today's t-partiers, who don't give a damn about our constitution because it has allowed that n------r to live in the White House and they do mean it to remain white.
I do apologize for the racial remarks, above, but I do ask for your under-standing of the context within which they were written.
In the mean time Irish, unless you are a zillionaire, bend over and grab your ankles, spread your knees a little, shut your eyes and grit your teeth, because there;s a BIG surprise coming your way from the t-partier-in-cheif. Enjoy the screwing.
Sorry, fella.
James
The Republicans have not gotten over the implemenation of socical securty or medicare. No one who is alive today will ever see a living republican who gets over any progression toward universal healthcare. Remember libertarians are the ones who haven't gotten over disgarding the articles of confederation. The south hasn't gotten over slavery ending.
These are a vile nasty selfish greedy myopic people with no other driving force than the ubridled acquisition of power and wealth willing to destroy the earth and the country to do it.
All this is a lesson to is in the terrible times in the future when there is a republican who lied cheated and stole his way into the whitehouse, it is incumbent on the democratic party to shoot down by filibuster any but the most moderate of justices appointed to the court. The next thomas. scalia, alito, or kennedy to be nominted must not be confirmed.
Heck they republicans haven't gotten over the civil war, remember republicans were the liberal party of 1860 and the democratic party was the conservative party. But never try to tell that to a tea bagged republican they insist conservatives and liberals are parties of their own or better known as more insanity from the insane minds that voted Reagan.
Hey Whomitmay, did you ever hear that tea bags are full of flakes?
Oh I thought tea bags were full of insane religious nuts who thought they could be healed by touching their TV's and are stuck riding government handout scooters pissed off at everyone who they blame for not being healed by TV. After all Pat wouldn't lie to them after all the 700 club memberships they bought from Pat.
Hi Philly Tom. Your absolutley righy. These nuts are unreal, but they vote fercrissakes! I'm having a verbal tussle with one of them (Irisheagle) over Clyde's remarks. see above. it's a laugh.
Sorry Meghan, you can't always say, "I think he misspoke".
I believe the R's were waiting for the decision. They have lost. I believe when their convention takes place they will dump Romney and nominate someone else. All this fuss about the decision is a smoke screen. This is the reason why Romney has been quiet on issues. They know that Romney has already lost the battle. There is someone in the wings just waiting to come forward and flip the whole script. Just another aha! moment.
Except the republican billionaires who control the GOP want Mittens. They picked him back in 2008 when he stood down for McCain to run. That is how the GOP rolls. Hope all you want but the billionaires hope to buy the presidency and the GOP hope to stack the deck with voter purges and other dirty tricks.
right on whom it may. Check one of the crazies i'm corresponding with above. These nuts are unreal, but they vote fercrissakes! I'm having a verbal tussle with one of them right now(Irisheagle) over Clyde's remarks. s\See above. It's a laugh.
James
Oh everyone but irish's sock puppets have had a go around with him, he likes pushing a talking point then when backed into a no win he switches topics to a new/old talking point.
Once in a land of the free and fair
There were a great many people living in despair
For many of them you see all across the country
couldn't afford an insurance policy
For those who had a condition pre-existing
insuring them was something the companies were resisting
Women for their needs had to pay more
...for the same insurance as any man for walking in the door
Young people found the system to be rough
And seniors also found paying it tough
The problem and harm was plain to see
when medical bills became the greatest cause of bankruptcy
when this became known the democrats had to act
shame they haven't done much else to fight back...
the republicans called it an evil socialist plot
and so ad timing trashing it they bought
they screamed, and yelled, and even lied
anything to stop the law they'd deride
Unconstitutional they argued it entire law was
and sadly many believed and made it quite a buzz
And so it went all the way to roberts and the supremes
to see if the law went past the constitution's means
Roberts, Kenndy, Thomas, Alito and Scallia
had many believing that to the law they'd say see ya
it seemed obamacare would lose on the floor
putting the affordable care act at death's door
but at the last moment a switch occurred
and with the four liberals on the court roberts concurred
The GOP ranted, raved and insulted the justice
they'll hate him forever because he didn't crush this
With all the hate, and yelling, and lies
it would be the right that was truly getting a surprise
They mocked and lied and thought they'd sack it
In the end their arguments just couldn't hack it
The muck and spin failed to buck it
So it's time for the GOP to shut up and SUCK IT!
Now you may perhaps think we shouldn't spike the ball
But come on that would be no fun at all
In his Senate confirmation hearing, Chief Justice Roberts likened the judge’s duty on the High Court bench to being the umpires behind the plate; you don’t make the rules you just call the balls and strikes. The call has been made and as announced last night with the Good Sox beating the D@mn Yankees 14-7, “This game is over.”
But some who don’t like the call are still banging their heads in tantrum protest, but away the spectators stream from the ballpark, and meanwhile the guy in the Oval Office smiled and went back to work and there could be heard on the south lawn of the White House, across South Chicago, and closer to home, “Go Sox!”
Tusk, tusk, right-wingers wanted a homer and they didn’t get it. And as Harry Truman rhetorically asked, “How many times do you have to get hit in the head until you discover who is hitting you in the head.” Apparently those that are hitting themselves in the head get too stunned to know who is doing it and to just stop---on their own strike three they appear about ready to put themselves OUT!
Republicans, need to stfu, with their lies and return to being civil, patriotic Americans, where in America, nothing is free. Every accomplishment that benefits all Americans, has been bought and paid for by the working class, through hard work and PAYING TAXES. Now, republicans are hell bent on stealing all of those accomplishments and the taxes that pay for and maintain those accomplishments, from the working people, and line their own pockets and the pockets of their wealthy OWNERS, that they have sold their soul to.
FOR A RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS ONLY.
Stupid or Not?
Progressives decry the accusation that the biggest part of the electorate is dumb, but they are wrong. The Republicans are right. People ARE stupid. Let me prove that.
The elite and the president cite facts to back up their claims of being right on the issues.
Well and good.
Then listen to the pronouncements by Joe the Plumber and his ilk. They use simple words and ideas, often misconceived, draw dumb conclusions that sound right—so therefore they must be right and go on to gain the support of those who haven't a clue of what they are for or against. You might find that a lot of these people are the self identified “Independents” we read about in the polls, voicing their opinions
The majority of the electorate is tuned out of politics because they don't like to think about it. Too many confusing ideas. That takes work.
It's more entertaining to watch who's going to survive this week on the latest reality show or who will win on American Idol. Besides, “Who the hell cares what those smart-ass, talking heads on the Sunday TV political talk shows are yap, yapping about. Sarah Palin says they're a bunch of socialists, anyway.”
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT, like it or not.
Quoting facts is fine—in a classroom. People are there to learn. But out here in the trenches, the ordinary people, numbed by the fare of the ratings-conscious TV industry and looking for instant entertainment gratification, don't understand facts. It takes work to assimilate facts, and worse, an awful lot of thinking to understand them, if they ever make any sense to begin with in terms of what's in it for me?.
When they hear simple exclamations and complaints by simple talking (some would say simple-minded) politicians and right-wing gurus, they understand what is being said. They take what they hear as fact, because they understand it. They respond to key, familiar words: taxes, loss of freedom, unconstitutional, job creation—or loss, real jobs, their children, their home, etc.
The electorate doesn't like to hear things they don't understand and don't trust any one who confuses them. They think they're being sold a bill-of-goods. Progressives, you've lost your case.
My premise wins. People are stupid—at best, educationally challenged.
Knowing my premise is correct, political operatives and others who try to manipulate the electorate use this knowledge to fashion their pitches to stimulate fear (when they need to), patriotism
(when to do so gets the blood flowing), twist the facts to suit their arguments, and to just plain lie. Use of the electorate to gain their objectives is unconscionable; But if it works, So What? And it works.
I'm very sorry, but progressives have to graciously descend from their lofty pedestals with their sacred facts and explain what the hell they mean to Joe Blow in terms that he can understand. I know that it's painful to sink to such putrid levels. Too goddamned bad!
These yokels are against the Affordable Care Act without knowing what the hell is in it and when they take effect. They believe all the lies and misconceptions they hear from the Joe-the-Plumber types, because they don't hear what should be simple rebuttals. Some are shocked to hear that Medicare is a government program and they are going to lose it to OBAMACARE. They are convinced that the Democrats are going to change Social-Security into a socialist program by improving its benefits for those who don't deserve it..
Others are telling our independent friends that lower taxes for the rich creates new jobs while they take campaign money from the “job creators” who make a specialty of shipping jobs overseas. Wall Street regulations strangle job creators, besides destroying our capitalistic system.
What more argument do you need that we must explain the facts in terms of what they do to people? What the hell is wrong with the truth? Why run from it? Embrace it.
James~~Nice post! Do you think, the people will ever be able to charge, indict and prosecute, elected officials for lying to the people who have elected them. The republicans spend all of their time lying and whining. For years they have whined about activist judges. Now they have the most activist SCOTUS, in history, but they are republicans, so they think that is okay. For years they cried and whined about George Soros, unions, union members, and Hollwood, making contributions to dems. Now they think citizens united, Kochs, Adelman, Fritz(SP), Rove, big banks, Wall Street, big US corporations, big off shore corporations, freedom works, chamber of commerce, NRA etc. is just great contributing millions to buy the election for them. They are radical extremist against everything Obama and dems. Republicans are not just un-American, they are also anti-American. They claim to be Christians, but they continously violate the ten commandments. They claim to worship the constitution, but they continously, violate the constitution. God help us!
Thank you GREATGRAN101. The time I spent writing that piece was well worth the gift of your reply. You are so with it. The evidenceof that is in the content of your message. It shows you can think for yourself.
Thank you,
James
All what I have read the court stated that the law was legal becuase the congress has the right to impose taxes, fees, and penalties. It did not say the mandate was a tax. If you want people to be respondable then make them pay for their health care or have health insurance. I have seen people who become ill or are hurt blow off thier bills and we the tax payer, and the insured end up paying for them with higher taxes, higher premiums, higher co pays, and knowing the insurance companies have total control over our health care needs and pocket books... Wake up people on the right the mandate is making the deadbeats as you call them respondable for their health care choices. They dont want insurance then make them pay a penalty or get a bond to cover any illness or injuries that could happen to them. The people who are now unable to pay are already on medicade this includes the poor, the unemployed, under employed, and some of the men and women who have spent the last 11 years defending this country in two wars.
just saying
The Democrats must support the ACA while defending it from GOP lies. The biggest lie now is that the ACA will raise everyone's taxes. Most Americans will choose to purchase health insurance because you can not have a family in America without health insurance. The few who refuse to purchase health insurance will start losing their income tax refunds or more as the law takes affect in coming years. But the penalty is a fee assessed on those who refuse to purchase health insurance. The exchanges will make health insurance purchasing more affordable and easier.
I can not drive my car in Minnesota without liability insurance. My wife also has liability insurance on her car. This is the same for all married couples, or single adults, in Minnesota because state law says you must carry liability insurance on your vehicle. This law has been in affect all of my adult life supported by Republicans and Democrats. I don't remember anyone ever talking about repealing the evil "big government, insurance mandate" for automobiles. If you drive your car and the highway patrol or county sheriff pulls you over you had best have your liability proof of insurance card in your vehicle. If you don't, expect to pay a fine and go to court. Judges in Minnesota get cranky and short with car drivers without insurance because it adds to the cost of driving for everyone else who has insurance. So the judge takes away your license in extreme cases and gives you a very expensive fine. A second or third offense of driving without insurance means a jail term, revocation of your driver's license, and a larger fine in the thousands of dollars for dead beat drivers because the judge gets angry with such people. So no one who has normal intelligence drives without liability insurance.
The individual mandate for insurance for car drivers keeps costs contained for the public. The state of Minnesota has an interest in making sure that all residents who drive here carry liability insurance for their cars in case of an accident. So what is the excuse for sick or hurt people to not have health insurance policies to cover medical treatment including hospitalization? The individual mandate will encourage people to work and it will encourage individual responsibility. The exchanges will offer low wage workers subsidized health insurance including Medicaid. Getting everyone covered is the first step in containing medical costs. We already pay $1100 annually extra per family policy when the uninsured go to the ER. So why not make everyone purchase health insurance because sooner or later everyone will have to see a doctor. Better it be in a clinic setting by a family practitioner than in the ER room that costs 10 times as much or more.
The adult thing to do is go buy subsidized and affordable health insurance at the insurance exchanges. Dead beats who want to live off of the system seek free medical care that we already are paying for. The individual mandate for health insurance is an individual responsibility that the GOP should embrace, after all its their idea that Mitt Romney put into place in Massachusetts that put 98% of the people under health insurance coverage. Costs are being contained in Massachusetts and strong majorities are happy with the program. So it will also work on the national level but its just takes longer to set up because the U.S. is such a huge vast country.
When will they realize that mittdukakis is the king rino?
Wow, did you see big blowhard Ed's question? Does he think his own audience is stupid? He must...and that is a real plus for all of you Ed heads.
GOP lying about health care. Jack Lew on TV yesterday lying so big is was sickening.
First, the SC says that the money people who do not buy insurance have to pay will be a tax. Then, Obama and all of his cronies say it is not a tax. Do they think the American people are stupid. The SC said it. It is a tax.
Obama promised no taxes. I love this. This is going to follow him all the way out of the white house on Nov. 6.
And Ed's dumb question. Loser no matter how you answer for the right. He really thinks he is slick. All of you lefties get ready. You day of defeat is right around the corner. And it will be done at the ballot box.
No lies, spins, taken out of context sound bites will rescue you. America is too smart for your stupid dirty tricks.
Good Bye Obama. Remember when Michelle said ..."sometimes, I just want to walk out of the front door of the white house and keep on going" Well, her time is coming...except for one difference. She will have Barack on her arm going with her.
Rex, you're right on it. Couldn't have said it better than the way you did. And I'm a Republican--the kind the lunatics have expelled from Lincoln's party.
I wish we could return to the days of Richard Nixon (minus Watergate of course), Gerald Ford, and Eisenhower when moderate Republicans met with moderate Democrats and played let's make a deal. Both sides debated, offered amendments, and then compromised while writing a bill that could be signed into law by a mostly centrist president. They then started the whole process over again on the next issue. You can still see these types of public servants in Republicans like David Durenberger, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe or Richard Lugar. Moderate Republicans are an endangered species and so is our democracy.
Olympia Snowe retiring almost makes me ill. She has been in the past a moderate Republican who worked hard building bipartisan consensus to get things done behind the scenes. If Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe were running for president or controlled the Republican party I honestly would not care who was on top, because I realize both sides would try to build the country up. The best policy gets made when moderate Democrats and moderate Republicans get together and play let's make a deal behind closed doors. Centrist bills get written that all of us may not love but they are bills we all can live with that get the essential things done and paid for our country. The country actually functioned better that way for everyone including the rich. We need to leave radical ideas and hyper-partisanship behind because both are divorced from sound public policy solutions.
I am afraid these days will not happen again until we have public financing again. I wish the Montana law that was struck down last week was the model for all 50 states in the United States of America. I like democracies where the average person with a family, a W-2, a house mortgage with a pile of bills on the kitchen table has a voice in the political process. Oligarchs on Wall Street are only concerned about their corporate special interests of the top one percent, not those of us with families and bills to pay on the kitchen table somewhere on Main Street, USA. Public financing for elections will be the only way to see a renaissance of the moderate Republican and the moderate Democrats working hard together behind the scenes to build up the country for our kids rather than just worrying about the special privileges and tax cuts for the top one percent.
Hey Rex. Your right, of course. Oh for those days, but today is different for one reason only: the color of President Obama's skin. We all know that but so few admit it. The Repub operatives use that to get their way even tho color isn't their motive, per se. They know they can upset a lot of people into voting their way. They hide behind the issue and indignantly say "Who, Me?
This is called lying. Any questions?
James
