Mitt Romney said Americans don't want more teachers, firefighters or police officers. Now his campaign is defending the comments. Michael Eric Dyson talks with The Washington Post's E.J. Dionne about the Republican fallacy of wasteful government jobs.
Republicans want to pretend government job losses don't hurt the economy, but the facts are not on their side.
We are currently experiencing the only time in the last 30 years in which public sector jobs have not been part of the post-recession recovery. And they wonder why this current recovery is sluggish:

Those jobs make a difference in the overall unemployment picture.
According to the wall street journal, unemployment would be a full percentage point lower with those public sector jobs factored in:

Joe Sangataldo: I was laid off with six other One Stop Vineland NJ federal Job Trainers as the 1200 public workers Christie laid off by the end of 2010. It left hundreds of unemployed without staff under WIA funds. It was throwing the weak out of the life boat to save the few and well paid their work. It is union busting and bogus budget shortages. I want to appear with you or Chris Hayes and tell the story now my UI benefits will end. We are at 14% UI in Cumberland and Atlantic County N.J. Blame the jobless and every man for himself down here in Southern NJ.
Gov. Chris Christie is coming to Galloway Township next Wednesday, June 13, the Governor's Office announced Wednesday afternoon, June 6.
Christie will hold a town hall meeting at theGalloway Township Middle School gymnasium. Doors for the meeting will open at 1:45 p.m., and seating is on a first come, first serve basis, the Governor's Office said.

I really believe that the message needs to be more broad......the president needs to addresss the entire middle class.......not just the people in civil unions.....most middle class workers have no unions and they are the people who pick up the tab for the union employee's benefits... that are something the middle class non union people can only dream of......i am a life long democrat.....i believe in the idea of unions but with so few people actually belonging to them ..........this old stand by in the democratic party can actually hurt them with the broader middle class democrat......
Ed, If you are suggesting that the unemployment rate would be much less if there were no Public Sector layoffs I doubt you are correct. The problem with funding for Federal, state and local government employees is directly related to a significant loss of tax revenue because of the loss of private sector jobs. If taxes were increased to continue to support the over sized and bloated government work force the unemployment in the private sector would have increased. A business can either pay more taxes or it can higher more employees, it cannot do both. I for one would much rather see Public Sector employment reduced than jobs in the private sector, after all how many administrators do we really need in the public education system, Federal, State, County, City..... Get rid of the Federal, state, and county offices and leave the city administrators to address the needs of their schools.
We don't want to eliminate more jobs......not good for the economy........the unions need to have benefits a little more in line with the private sector.......i pay outrageous property taxes and almost all of it goes to civil union employees benefit packages........not that i don't think they deserve it......i believe all american workers deserve a living wage and good medical benefits......however we need less discrepancy between the public and private sector........
I am nothing more than a well educated 15 year old with a voice. with the way the unemployment rate keeps dropping i do not understand what we will do if America thinks that we can regain from this economic downfall. we have 17 trillion dollars in debt and most of that is with china and all we are doing about our debt is nothing. in the constitution it says that we have the right as American citizens to pursuit our happiness but how can we do so when the economy is so bad. our founding fathers would want us to follow our dreams as American citizens we should be able to do whatever we would want to do. if you want to be a doctor you should be able to do that if you want to be a police officer you should be able to do that. if we keep going in the direction that we are going at now we will be a dictatorship or a monarchy by 2020.
Ah no you better do some research on that China doesn't own most of the US debt. You'll be surprised who we owe the most to.
Whom yes they would be surprised that SS own about 88% and China owns about 6%.
OK so every federal and state job that is supported by our government costs 40% more to the government than if it didnt exist. I believe that the Federal work force can be supplemented with private contracts that will also reduce the amount of retirement accounts that Federal government will be required to pay out in 25-30 years. In the DC area Federal employees make more money than their civilian counterparts due to the benefits, and again their salaries add to the national deficit at a rate of 40% which is what we borrow from others on every dollar we spend. Thats a big deal. Lets get the fiscal house in order then start reconsidering bringing these people back.
Any time there is a 3rd party, private contract, involved the price goes up. Those companies don't pay the taxes, vacation time, insurance, etc, out of the kindness of their hearts. The party that issues the contract, Gov't does. And that conpany is in business to make a profit. Increased cost. Just look at what those private contracters cost the American people in Iraq. For the same jobs the military use to do. Which costs more?
Right, let the government be the largest employer in the country, just like the government is in Cuba. That will work ! ( Roll eyes !)
It takes tax payer money to pay government workers....
We need private sector jobs!!! Not government jobs!!!
