Comedian Chris Rock appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night to promote Madagascar 3. But he talked about a lot more Marty the zebra he plays in the new movie.
Rock also took a jab at Mitt Romney’s religion, reminding viewers of the Mormon Church’s controversial history on race.
“Mitt Romney's crew, they believed black people were the devil 'til 1978,” Rock said. “I'm not making this up. This is…right, right, right?”
“That means Jackson 5, devil,” Rock continued. “Tempations, the devil.”
Indeed, African-American males were not allowed to fully participate in the Mormon priesthood until Friday, June 9, 1978 when the church ended a 148-year policy of racial discrimination.
Romney, who was 31 at the time, said in 2007 that he had been "anxious to see a change in my church" and recalled weeping when he heard that the ban had been lifted.
Then, Rock moved to President Obama and the pace of economic recovery.
“Everybody's complaining, 'It's not going fast enough.' It's like complaining that your team keeps winning by one. 'How we keep winning by one? We should score more.' Nah, nah. We're winning, man. That's good."
“When Obama got elected, you got to understand, the country was in a shambles he had a cleanup job to do and when you have to clean up something to properly cleanup it gets dirtier before it gets clean.”
Rock then went into a hilarious analogy about cleaning hotel rooms. Watch the video and then watch The Ed Show at 8pET on MSNBC! Guest host Michael Eric Dyson interviews political comedian John Fugelsang about Rock's remarks.

Or how bout a clean coal mine!
Dear Edward,
The other day you mentioned on your television programme that it 'was a bad day for wage earners(TM) today' ... could you please elaborate? Why? What happened, what was bad for wage earners? Maybe talk about it on your show & explain. PS: your satellite radio show is way too early for Pacific-Time to watch. Thanks.
Chris Rock is so funny, great comedian. But it has been how many decades since Hitlers hate for the Jews and here we are in the 21st century and still there are those who follow him. Are we so stupid as to think there are those that are Mormon who still do not hold to there teaching of black people are evil? 1978 has not been that long ago. As much as we would love to sing cum Bi ah the fact is old ways will all ways be there. Will they effect Romney's decisions ? Well that is the 64 million question is 'nt it?
mitt romney wasn't weeping for joy when the ban was lifted.
I have a feeling the only thing that could make Mitt cry is losing a ton of money on his stocks. He's such a flip-flopping liar, how can anyone believe a word he says?? On the Rev tonight, he told about the Iraq veteran, a Rep that is running for Gaby Giffords seat and he has the backing of guess who-- Neo-Nazi skinheads. Of course the guy is a Tea Partier. It scares the H3LL out of me that those crazies in AZ could elect this wacko. He said Gaby was useless and no hero. Another wonderful candidate brought to you by the Republican Party. The guy that got shot when Gaby did is running against him. I hope to God he wins!
MJB....talk about lying....You have lied so much in your little speech above than anyone. What is this man's name? When did he say he was a member of the tea party? Show me where skinheads are backing him? Show me where he said that about Mrs. Giffords....about being useless and no hero.
Show me where those things were said and mentioned. I am waiting because I think you have lied about it all.
I can understand Ed disagreeing with Mitt Romney's political views. But I would point out that every time someone at MSNBC takes a shot at him over being Mormon, they are taking a shot at their own Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, too. The worst offender was Lawrence O'Donnell, who had the audacity to spend an entire segment disparaging the Mormon faith and implying that he wanted to ask Romney if he believed in things O'Donnell found offensive. The kicker? The guest for his next segment was Harry Reid! If you really had these fears and wanted answers why didn't you ask the prominent Mormon politician right across from you, Mr O'Donnell?
Is it really so hard to not let politics sink completely into the muck? Do we really have to use Chris Rock's comments to attack a man over his religion? And if we do that, should we follow everything Chris Rock says? I remember him complaining about income taxes in a stand up routing declaring "You don't pay tax, they take tax. You get your check and the money's gone. That's not a tax, that's a jack." Should we declare him some kind of Libertarian now for not liking the income tax system? Clearly the man's words must have some political significance beyond entertainment to make what he said about Mormons an issue.
And for the record, no, I'm not a Mormon. I just don't like seeing religion used as a political smear tactic. It's beneath us as Americans.
Ed and his spins are bad enough. Rachel and the crap she comes up with by all of her staff's digging...is unbelievable.....but Lawrence O'donnell. That guy is a truly...so far out there, I don't think there is any hope for him.
I have watched some of his show since the shellacking on Tuesday night and the things this guy says about anyone...especially Romney is just unbelievable. Who finds this stuff for him. Next thing you know, he going to bring up when Romney was 10 years old, he killed a fly or something stupid like that.
After Walker won the recall, he kept saying that night and the next...."Walker has squeaked by...."when Walker squeaked by"....over and over again. Every time it was mention....Walker just SQUEAKED by.
I don't know who digs up the crap that Rachel reads or Lawrence reads but it makes for very entertaining TV...just to sit there and laugh.
who cares if mitt romney kills a fly after everything else we know about him?
we would laugh too, if hannity, oreilly and greta, and fox news in general, weren't so BORING.
You should hear the "Martin Bashir" guy go off on Mormons.
I see that u back Mitt but I like Chris Rock but do I follow him no. I am my own man. I can not follow a faith that believes in me as being a devil. And u should check yourself for even defending that.
It has nothing to do with who you back or not. Freedom of religion is still freedom of religion and attacking anyone over their faith like that is wrong. I don't care if they're Muslim, Mormon, Hindu, Catholic, Jewish, etc. If you want to beat the man beat him over his policies, not what church he goes to. I like Chris Rock as a comedian. I don't like political commentators using his words to attack someone over their own religion.
And for the record, I've know African American Mormons who are devout and members of their church so saying that the Mormon Church today is racist against African Americans is a little skewed. You don't let people that are "the devil" into your church to start off with. In 1978 they lifted the ban on African Americans joining the Mormon priesthood, but they were already allowed to become members of the church at that point. That was pretty much the last bit of racial segregation in their church.
As for how Mitt Romney's opinions would be shaped by his faith, well should we assume JFK thought women were the devil because Catholicism does not allow women into the priesthood? It's the same thing, an outdated tradition forged in a less socially enlightened time that means nothing about a person's personal belief system.
I really think that Mitt Romney's religion would effect his decisions because he held, I don't know if he still does, a very high position in his church. It would be equivalent to an arch bishop in the catholic church and this means he steeped in his religion. Plus the mormon church had a prophesy of a mormon becoming president of the United States, which makes his resolve to be president all the stronger. Yes JFK was a Catholic, but I know, because I am a Catholic also that a lot of us don't adhere to everything they teach us. However, the mormon faith is very different and a little fanatical.
Let me first start by saying I have great affection for Dr. Dyson. My brother is wrong about the scripture he quoted from The Book of Mormon. It is a record of people in "the America's" to my knowledge, Dr. Dyson and his very extensive knowledge of his people on this continent can help me here, It's my understanding that his people were brought here against their will after the beginnings of this country, as we know it. So how can a "scripture" allegedly from before the white man, how can this verse refer to his/our brothers and sisters. I would think it would offend brothers/sisters among the First Nations that should be offended by the verse.
I'm a big fan of Dr. Dyson. I have to call him out on his misquotation of The Book of Mormon. He inferred that the scripture was referring to his brothers/sisters from the Nation of Africa. The Book of Mormon is a work of people who left Jerusalem and came to the America's. Spanning the time before Christ and for a few hundred years after. If my understanding of the History of Africans on this continent is correct , those time frames don't add up. My point is this, If any one should be upset about the "scripture" quoted by Dr. Dyson, it should be our brothers/sisters of First Nations, not those of African descent. Saddened that in all of the misgivings that come from Romney. Twisting scripture is what Dr. Dyson has resorted to.
oops!!! first day
that romney knew of and belonged to a racist church from age 18 to 31 - and he never spoke out against it! - Wow!
money,
some people believe that if teachings like the ones the mormons believe/believed about blacks come from the church, come from those appointed by god, they simply do not see this as bigotry or racism. they simply see this as truth, as not being steered in the wrong direction, as appointee's of god WOULD NEVER DO THAT. this can be true of any church/religion.
i think it was about this time, in 1978, when the mormon church changed their stance on blacks in regard to the priesthood, that they were trying to align themselves more closely with the "christian" ideology. not completely sure about that.
An uneducated Black man, clearly not up to speed on current events, wants to give advice on the reelection of a Black Pres.
Ya, I am going to give this some more thought.......
