Can Mitt Romney match Scott Walker's victory and become the first Republican to win Wisconsin since 1984? The Washington Post's Dan Balz discusses.
Citizens United and big outside/independent money saved the day for Scott Walker in Wisconsin. Ed will go inside the numbers from last night with John Nichols, Washington Correspondent of The Nation.
Democrats and labor now need a major wake-up call. You WILL NOT want to miss Ed’s commentary on that.
Big money helped put Walker over the top, could it play a big part in some key swing states this November? Ed will ask Brad Woodhouse, Communications Director for the Democratic National Committee, about how the party will combat the cash.
Republicans are now trying to draft Walker for vice president. Really?!?! Ed's panel, Krystal Ball, Democratic Strategist and former candidate for U.S. Congress, Jimmy Williams, former Democratic Senate Staffer and MSNBC Contributor, and political commentator Abby Huntsman, will weigh in on that and much more.
Then, Bill Clinton says he wants to keep giving tax cuts to America's richest people. Whose side is he on anyway? Ed will have a reality check.
And in our Big Finish, how do Republicans keep convincing people to vote against their own self-interest? Ed ask E.J. Dionne, a Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution and Washington Post columnist, and Thomas Frank, author ("Pity the Billionaire"), columnist at Harper's Magazine.

Ed and his far liberal friends will sit down tonight and pat each other in the back and congratulate each other in how much they have in common. Then they will go on to say how they stand for unions, the middle class and that the WI elections meant nothing. Then they will proceed to say that Walker will be indicted and how important that is for Obama's election. Then they will sell you on how great all liberals are with the fact that Republicans are racists, the Koch brothers are bad, and the 1% should pay more taxes. Then ED will end the show with a rousing request that more undocumented Democrats should be allowed to vote if you want the Democratic party to win the next election.
Robert you should be able to sell this to the ignorant voters who voted for Walker.
RNC Chair Reince Priebus: "I don't think laws can circle around what's right and wrong"
Ideology goes out the window when people realize they cannot survive on talk and that is what the problem is with the republicans. It may sound great when it is being spun, but at the end of the day the reality of the situation is what becomes the problem.
Do any of you really believe that young people will be going into teaching in Wisconsin in say five years? What America needs to avoid is discontent among its citizens, the ones who have, have too much and the ones who work hard have nothing and that is where the republicans are trying to take this country.
With all the money in the Wisconscin election, somebody is buying this country from under its citizens including you.
Pay attention:
The Arab spring
Latin America
Saudi Arabia's recent economic changes
Africa
People eventually revolt and that is the one condition that is not in the plans the republicans are putting forward for America.
thank God that Ed ,Rachael and Lawrence shine the spotlight into the dark hole of the Republican Party-- oh wait the- TEAParty
When has ANY DEMOCRAT said they want undocumented workers to vote? Show me ONE example. You Republicans are pathetic.
You got it exactly right. I've never been more entertained with MSNBC. To see the dour reporting over the Walker victory... To see how hypocritical these folks are when the tables are turned...
Ed, even FDR and the magnificent James Earl Carter were AGAINST collective bargaining of public sector unions. Wonder why?
Maybe it's because John Q. MIDDLE CLASS TAXPAYER will be sucked DRY. Yesterday was a victory for INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYERS. It's astounding that you cannot see that. Then again, we know who butters your bread, so I guess it's not surprising you'd side with union boss thugs. Ed, my favorite quote from your rant was "to the union members who voted FOR WALKER! You gotta explain to your union why you did that!!!" Nope. They don't have to EXPLAIN TO ANYONE. We're still a nation of INDIVIDUALS who have the right to CHOOSE who they think is best.
GOOD FOR YOU, WISCONSIN. GO WALKER.
BACK AT YOU ya brainwashed morons. Keep watcjhing FOX spin.... ahhh I mean News and AM Radio Free Conservative
Robert and his far Right, Conservative wacko friends will sit around and conveniently forget about the Bush Cheney disaster.
The results of Bush/Cheney and the Republican controlled Congress (1994-2006) speak for themselves. Waste, fraud, abuse of power, scandal, corruption, media consolidation, sexual deviancy, welfare for the rich, soldiers getting electrocuted in showers due to shoddy Halliburton/KBR contract work, arms dealing, environmental deregulation, war profiteering, Constitutional violations and a corporate crime wave of epic proportions. The greatest looting of a nation’s wealth & resources in the history of mankind… Yet these shameless hypocrites have the audacity to act they’re the responsible adults at the table, BULLS***!
I think what the Obama/Biden Administration is doing is genius. The way I see it, President Obama is giving the Republican monkeys enough rope to hang themselves. Eventually Conservatives are going to snap out of their cult stupor and realize Republicans aren’t representing the best interests of the American people.
SpoogeAct- Yes, Obama and his administration are geniuses. At least to those of you LWNJ 's. Slowly trying to manipulate this country into a place we may never recognize again if he gets four more years. It's been bad enough with the ability to somewhat keep him in check, but left four more years without concern for re-election, we may never see anything again other than what the dictator, er uh, communicator, er uh, obliterator in chief leaves us as shambles.
You're a fool Mike RO,
"keep Obama in check" or obstruct him of doing the never-ending job of the Democratic Party... to fix what the GOP has f***ed up.
Yea Obama/Biden is doing so bad according to WHO? According to facts the economy is growing, spending is DOWN, as are taxes. Reagan would be ashamed of you
Ohhh, I get it... YOU FELL for the BS from the GOP propaganda machine. You think Obama is spending but what he actuaLLY did is put all the Bush/cheney debt on the books... y'know the way responsible Americans pay their bills.
Remember Bush didn't pay for the 2 wars, tax cuts for the rich and Medicare Part iDiot.
Conservative wackos have done more damage to the USA than any terrorist.
Well Said..." SpoAct" I couldn't agree more...As I read these blogs I find the results of our failed educational system. We have an ignorant electoral voters going to voting booths and voting on the latest media ad that they saw.
Ed's biggest failure is surrounding himself with the choir. He always has the same guests, chosen from the choir. His experts are from the choir. He selects his audience from the choir. And they all sing the same tune. No wonder nobody listens to him.
It is called "The Confirmation Bias" Confirmation bias is the tendency to see things in your environment that confirm your preconceived ideas and not see things that conflict with what you already believe.
And I still say, nobody is forcing you to watch and listen. But you sure love to and then come on HIS blog site and start with the bad mouthing insults. What a fine demonstration of the right wing value system. Very fine demonstration of what the right wing stands for. I knew there was a reason I switched.
yes
yes
yes....
So true...I can't remember the last time any of these MSNBC Obama Droids
had some one on who can provide a response to the crap that Big Eddie
is dishing out...
Larry
Keep a stiff upper lip. I know your guy took a worse beating than you thought possible but just keep on keepin' on.
larry thinks only liberals should be on this blog...
They claim to be fare an unbiased.
Open minded, defenders of the first amendment...
Until someone comes along and disagrees with them.
Just because conservatives are like that doesn't mean everyone else is. What you really should be looking a is your own behaviors, conservatives are bad losers as well as bad winners they become insufferable asses like they actually did something when facts are they did nothing but support a person that was just as bad as they are, a greedy self centered politician. All the recall did was prove liberals as well as the founding fathers right, corporation money buys elections.
Jerry, my "guy" didn't lose. I don't live there. Stupida. I've never said only liberals can should be on this blog. But so far, the righties have done nothing but call names, insult the other people here and the host. You've proven time and again, you're not here to discuss anything. All of you have been ask serious, honest questions and we get BS response at best. You've provided no rational ideas or solutions to anything. Just more BS. All you have to do is go back through for the last 2 weeks and see this is so. Don't even try your usual blame BS. It's worn out.
All the recall did was prove liberals as well as the founding fathers right, corporation money buys elections.
What it proves is that liberalism has to be beaten into the ground. Do you really think that a bunch of flat broke losers can use the Constitution to piss away millions of dollars that belong to real Americans any time they want. Once SS, Medicare, welfare and public education is cut in half, then you guys will know it's time to keep your mouths shut up and take what you're given. Maybe a FEMA camp??
If that happens, you'll be right there with us. You and your mouthy ass won't last long under the Nazis.
RNC Chair Reince Priebus: "I don't think laws can circle around what's right and wrong"
i believe that this statement made today is self-explanatory.
If that happens, you'll be right there with us. You and your mouthy ass won't last long under the Nazis.
Oh yeah, I'll be there!!!...I'll be on of the Nazis. When in Rome....................
Ca'nt all of you see that eugenie and stupid are assigned to this blog by the Romney campaign?Just as Romney sends hecklers to Obama rallies,he does the same thing to these liberal blogs. They'll change no minds here with their blather, all they'll do is divide the country further. So please ignore them and do'nt give them the satisfaction of responding to their commen'ts.
Ca'nt all of you see that eugenie and stupid are assigned to this blog by the Romney campaign?
DAMN IT!!!!!! FOILED AGAIN!!!!!
What gave me away?
Care to guess how much I get paid?
My professor described the phenomenon as "Group Think" after watching his show last night.
Your professor was talking about people like conservatives who share 1/2 a brain cell and always flocks together in a pack without any decent in the ranks. Want proof just look at how not even 3 months ago every conservative on this blog claimed anyone but Mittens was going to be the GOP candidate. Then when their masters decided that Mittens was their choice every conservative on this blog acted like they had been for Mittens since the day he entered the primaries. All you did was watch TV and come to the conclusion that liberals were acting like conservatives without actually listening to what was being said or the decent in the ranks.
Isn't that what Democrats did that supported Hillary once the DNC masters selected Obama as their candidate? They flocked together under Obama?
Valtican can you figure this out and comprehend the meaning and long range H3LL and consequences of this kind of law making.
RNC Chair Reince Priebus: "I don't think laws can circle around what's right and wrong"
you know it cracks me up that the fox puppets come on Ed's page and complain about him go back to your fox lies where you belong you wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face nor do any of you know how to look up FACTS I hope walker destroys wisconsin like we all know he is going to do, they derserve what they they voted for if they are that stupid I don't feel sorry for them. you can fact check everything Ed and Rachel say and find its true so if you have a problem with the truth GO AWAY we don't need you on here
Conservatives believe if you tell a lie 3 times it becomes fact and then a part of their belief system.
Romney said, if you believe it, it isn't a lie.
wow - you really think Ed and Rachael always tell the truth. Just last week Big Eddie was given false-false-false by Factcheck who said his statements were lies and the facts he used were not correct. Big Eddie skews the truth daily to fit his warped beliefs.
Right because in your delusional world everybody does what Fox news does.
Kimberly thank you for your comment. I can't understand how they can't see that their future is in jeopardy, they watch fox and tell us that MSNBC does not give honest facts---are you kidding me
Stop the namecalling and the nasty remarks !!!!!!!!!
You who claim to be on the left side of things, don't understand the real issue with the Unions. Let me help you, It is Pensions! those in the public union do not fund their own pension, sound fair to you? If so you work in a public union! I know this, I don't work in a union and will not receive a pension when I retire. I do fund my own retirement in a 401K. Yep fund my own. When public unions fund their own pension system, the battle will be over. Until then, go Scott Walker and every other governor willing to take it on. No more freebies from us hard working tax paying people.
it is harder to think individually when bombarded with too many group minded think ideas
Will MSNBC finally realize that no one takes ED Shultz seriously?
A rabble rousing hate monger who does more harm to race relations than Jesse Jackson
And Al Sharpton combined.
Time to sign off Shultz.. Your type of bigerty is not wanted in a free society.
Does your professor describe how voting for any GOP/tea partier is in the best interest of the U.S.?
Big Eddie is busy tonight making excuses why liberals and fat cat union bosses lost. He needs to start planning excuses for November when Obama gets the door.
There is a difference between excuses and looking at the reasons for it happening so things can be changed in the future. Though I'm not sure how you change the influx from the super pacs. That is new and does need to be changed. Also, all negative ads about opponents should be outlawed. Too many lies get told that way.
Walker still lose he lose the Senate.
instead of the sign welcome to Wisconsin it will now say welcome to KOCH BROTHERS TOWN they just bought it, and when all unions are gone you all will be back to working for 2 bucks an hour and get ready for 80 hour work weeks all you people who hate the unions when they are gone the corporations will make sure you work long and hard for no money hope oh and don't think you 'll have paid vacations you'll be lucky to get any time off think about that the next time you hate unions they are the reason the 40 hour work week exists and minium wage you don't know what you have till its gone folks
You blew it Wisconsin. You had your chance to uphold the middle class.
Thank you Wisconsin for saving the middle class and the country!
Ed claim down as you see Walker is now working to be Mitt's VP pick. He knows he's finished but ready to tap in on his national coverage to latch on to Mitt. Ed Mitt lost in Wisconsin against Obama. Citizens elect their State Governors and Wisconsin voters for what ever reason they picked Walker. The President can't dictate to citizens who they want to run their State. Florida elected an admitted criminal and look what is going on there. California had to learn the hard way and now we're cleaning up Arnie's mess.
Ed, for Christ's sake, you're getting all riled up about a damn poll. In the first place how many of the 38% of union households that SAID they voted for Walker actually did so, or lied about doing so. Be it above a Wisconsin Republican to lie? I think not. Especially when they have much to gain from the lie. Polls? Someone asks someone else a question and expects a truthful answer and done in enough replication a synopsis can be produced from the result. However, polls are easily manipulated as well. I do not take too much stock into polls and neither should you. Just my humble opinion!
David I know what you are saying but it also shows Ed cares which is refreshing to see and hear.....
It has all came down to this statement made today.
RNC Chair Reince Priebus: "I don't think laws can circle around what's right and wrong"
When laws are not made upon a foundation consisting of right and wrong then we only have power and greed left.
Ed! I love you, but I'm guessing you're just going by the GOP and media hubbub about Clinton, because HE DIDN'T SAY what the GOP is claiming he said. The awful, awful political press followed their lying lead and is loving the idea that there's conflict btw Clinton and Obama; but Clinton just said exactly what everyone, including Obama, has been saying -- that this stuff will all have to be handled after the election. And he CLEARLY said he didn't favor extending the top-end Bush tax cuts. TPM's Brian Beutler did the perfect takedown; here's his calm, fact-based correction:
Remember: The GOP always lie, and the "MSM" are NOT our friends.
Shoot, guess the comment system doesn't allow links. So go to talkingpointsmemo-dot-com, and find the headline "The Manufactured Story of The Week" on the front page (the Editors Blog). Remember: THE GOP ALWAYS LIE, AND THE "MSM" ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS...
Arejaytoo: You need to take the time to listen to CNBC Maria Bartoromo interview of Clinton. He did say that. The interview took place on 6/05/12. Like Lawrence O'Donnell says: You are entitled to your opinion but not the facts.
No, Robert, he didn't -- I did see that interview. That's exactly what the column I "linked" to is discussing. I can only echo your last sentence and toss it back to you.
Oh, and you left a few words out: it's "You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts," and it was first said by the late, great Pat Moynihan, O'Donnell's former boss. Just sticking to the facts...
Hey, Eddie: Why do not tell your audience that the Citizens United Case applies equally to Unions, Pub. and Private. Is that something we should know?
The difference is that unions aren't dropping hundreds of millions of dollars like the handful of billionaires are. Do you see a difference?
Yes, I do: Unions spend hundreds of Millions on elections: Is that the same difference to which you refer?
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU):
* Plans to spend $44 million in total on its 2010 election program.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME):
* Plans to spend in excess of $50 millionduring the 2010 campaign, part of which will fund “a massive incumbent protection program,” according to Gerry McEntee, president of the union.
* The $50 million slated for the 2010 elections is the largest expenditure the union will make in a midterm election, according to union officials;
One of Karl Rove's PACs is going to raise $240 million. That is one PAC. There is no comparison between what the Dems raise and what the Repubs raise. But if you are wondering, I'd be very happy to have publicly-financed elections where no union and no PAC and no billionaire can contribute untold millions. Let them stand on their ideas. Repubs have crappy ideas and so would lose, except with the nutsos. So they need $$$ to infuse in elections because advertising works.
Yeah. Zillionaires like George Soros and leftist grantors like the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations undoubtedly figured it to be a lost cause. Besides, who needs money to advertise your candidate's merit when you have had, for the last year and a half, little Eddie Schultz broadcasting the plight of the Wisconsin public unions on his nightly 1 hr. show 4 times a week, giving voice to every liberal guest in support of the unions and the demonstrations in Madison (with no conservative counter-argument supporting Walker), riling up the populace and pushing for a recall while down there in person mixing with the folks, extolling the heroism of the Senators who fled to Illinois and, in total, providing all the free partisan advertising against Walker no amount of money can buy. Continually, over all that time. For the liberals to complain about their loss due to lack of time and money is laughable, given all that. The people of Wisconsin have just spoken, that's all.
Ed and Wassermanshultz need to get together for a whin off
Ed, I only have one question, and that is why, and how did President Obama miss the opportunity to diccredit the coke brothers, and other special interest groups who spended million, and millions to support Scott Walker.??????Also why did the President, and the democrats allowed the republicans to vote againist the equal pay to women.
You don't hear Democrats talking about the Koch brothers and Citizens United? Maybe because you watch Fox and listen to Rush. And how exactly should Dems and President Obama not "allow" Republicans to vote for or against anything? Are you from Saudi Arabia? Because then your questions would make sense.
Within the democratic party are politicians who are bought, or were put into office for the benifit of the special interest groups........Such politicians are not democrats.
You guys drive me crazy.. We keep hearing this business about the "rich" wanting to pay less but most of those making these claims have no idea what we actually pay. I own my own business and like most business owners, I set up an LLC. As the owner of an LLC, I have to pay 34% on my income plus an additional 15% because I am "self-employed". For those of you that can't add, that's 49% of my income to the fed. Add to this the 6% I pay in state income tax and I'm at 55% of my income to taxes before I start adding local/city/property taxes and such. I'm sorry if it makes me evil but I think paying 55% of my income in taxes is more than enough. Especially when I consider that 47% of people in the country pay no income taxes at all. I don't want to pay another penny in taxes beyond what I am already paying unless and until I see some movement in Washington to reduce spending.
I wish when you liberals start going on about how "little" the 1% pay in taxes that you'd get your facts straight. Most small businesses are LLC's. Most LLC's member have to pay the 15% surcharge for "self-employment" making our effective tax rate almost 50% - before state taxes.
If that's not enough, too freaking bad! Get off your asses and earn your own money and stop trying to take more of mine!
So what are your Republican friends doing for you? They always talk about the small businessman, but don't do anything at all for you. They help the enormous corporations like WalMart. Your anger is misplaced. Too bad you're not large enough for Republican senators to write laws exempting you from paying taxes.
Maybe by "small businessman", they mean Munchkins. Although it will be hard for you to become a Munchkin, I think.
What is your issue?
That's the problem, John. You are not in the 1%. You are like the rest of the struggling workers, even though you are the owner of a business. Bet you can't get a tax exemption to have your business in Wisconsin. Only the big guys in big corps get that. Sorry!
Johnr12...nice try and while there is truth in what you say if you payed the entire tax of 49%, but of course you don't. You forgot all of your expenses. So bottom line what do you pay in taxes? I am positive it is far less then 49%....nice try though from a fellow business person.
yo Ed, I challenge your uneducated behind to a dual on Union Pensions, care to take me on?
Ed you still don't get it do you? You don't understand that every day workers don't want to pay for someone elses retirement. Comprhenda? Challenge my friend.
Ed I love Scott Walker, he has it all!
U conservative wackos love the pretty boys, right?
9-6-10
Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Ted Haggard and the rest of gay Republicans are throwing a party and want to know if they can hire those Male Stripers the Morning Joe trust fund baby Crew on MSNBC, were talking about. I was busy getting ready for work but think you called them “The Young Guns”
LOL
Conservative men think they have ownership of the REAL MAN title. That’s how an idiot like George W. Bush got elected President. Conservative men thought W. was a macho guy they could have a beer with. (yea Bush drank all your beer and spit the warm swill in your dumbass faces)
Just look at W. working on the ranch in Crawford, TX, right? (yea, the moment Bush was out of office he moved to the gayest gated community in Dallas, poor poor Laura, right?) Blinded by a constant barrage of campaign like propaganda the Conservative wackos failed to notice the SIGNS.
George W. was a cheerleader? (to keep her son from getting his a** beat, Barbara Bush had to pay off bullies. That’s where Bush/Cheney came up with the “Surge” war plan,... loads of cash to pay off Iraqis not to kill Americans)
Yea, and look a that goofy smile George W. always has on his face in public with Ken Mehlman. Oooohhhhhh, and how could anyone forget the pictures of W. holding hands and smooching with his Saudi Royal buddies.
HEY, at least when Democrats get caught in a sex scandal it’s with a WOMAN!
At first I thought all these pretty-boy Scott Brown, Bob McDonnell, Scott Walker Marco Rubio types were getting elected because frustrated Republican women were voting for them. They thought their men were impotent but as it turns out these poor sex starved women weren’t getting any because Republican Men are all as GAY as Larry Craig, John Boehner, Mark Foley, Bill Cunningham, Ted Haggard, Glenn Beck, Ken Mehlman, etc… and enthusiastically VOTE for the pretty boys too! That’s NO way to run a country.
According to anti-gay activists George Rekers and James Dobson from the so-called Family Research Council… The Male Model/Escort industry has a great future in Republican Party politics… lol
GOP - Gay Old Party
STOP THE BS! Do NOT vote for Republicans, it’s GOOD for the USA…
concerncitizens.blogspot.com
I'm the wacko? this Ed dudes head is about to blow off and you call me a wacko. I like it that name calling is all you have. It is a behavior I notice most often when commenting with people on the left. Facts seem to evade you all. Well I do know that there was a fair battle and Scott Walker took on the challenge and won. The PEOPLE decided, not the unions. Ed can rant and rave all he wants, but he is acting out of touch. Time to stay away from caffeine for awhile.
yo, yo, Ed, you are against democracy you fool!
Ed, step away from the cliff, that is not your friend. It is called a democracy, there is a winner and there is a loser, guesss what, YOU LOSE!!!!!!
I can tell you why some union members voted for Walker. A friend's husband works in a private unionized job. They don't like it because they feel the union heads and members vote to let people back into their job after having been let go for missing work, etc. They feel these people are just not showing up when they don't feel like it.. too much partying the night before, etc. So in their limited experience the union is pandering to the slough offs. There is also a portion of the teacher group that is Republican for other reasons...abortion issue for example, and so they also don't feel they really need to be in the union. Fortunately for them they have never had to experience an 'unfriendly' principal who would find anything to get rid of them no matter how dedicated they are to teaching. I could go on and on about the weird thinking in this world but enough for now.
