But how about a little rational discussion on the main reason for the recall election. Should PUBLIC unions be able to negotiate wages and benefits. In the Federal Government wages and benefits are set by the Office of Personnel Management and any cost of living adjustment to the wage rates has to be proposed by the President and approved by Congress.

There are unions in the Federal Government but they can only collective bargain on non wage/benefit things like work at home, flex time, workplace conditions, etc. They have no say, other than petitioning their repective representatives in Congress in setting wages or health care or retirement benefits. Since state and municipal workers are public empolyees working for their respective states, counties, municpalities shouldn't they be subject to the same rules that Federal employees are. now come on people let's have a rational, non-name calling discussion on this.

But starting with Wisconsin in 1959, states began to allow collective bargaining in government. The influx of dues and members quickly changed the union movement’s tune, and collective bargaining in government is now widespread. Union contracts make it next to impossible to reward excellent teachers or fire failing ones. Union contracts give government employees gold-plated benefits – at the cost of higher taxes and less spending on other priorities. The alternative to Walker's budget was kicking 200,000 children off Medicaid.

Governor Walker’s plan reasserts voter control over government policy. Voters’ elected representatives should decide how the government spends their taxes. More states should heed the A.F.L.-C.I.O. He was a decorated teacher and cared about his job, but the truth was, he didn't care about students one bit. He cared about his family and what was best for them. He wanted his summers off, he wanted to work six hours a day during the school year and he wanted the tax payers to pay his retirement and health care. As a child, I thought that was great. My Dad had summers off to spend with me. As an adult and tax payer, I found his views to be selfish and wrong. His profession was to serve the students and not his own self interests.

If Barrett wins- what is the solution he is advocating for pensions? Private Industry was forced to confront this issue in the early and mid 90's with changes to the accounting standards forcing legacy and future pension costs to be accounted for in current earnings. Government, by-and-large, skirted these requirements and that leaves most of the country with huge gaps in pension funding.

Private firms have developed numerous solutions, but probably the most prevelant was scrapping or phasing out of defined benefit plans and going for defined contribution systems.

So- Barrett can't just waltz in with no solution in mind. Is he advocating that Wisconsin use FASB accounting and raise revenues through taxes to have continuance of pension coverage?

Eliz- I'll calmly ask you what the solution is? Governmental pensions at all levels (local, education, state, federal, etc) have outpaced all forms of revenue increases. There are as many estimates of the national shortfall as there are people writing about them, but safe to say- it is a number that will dwarf the housing bubble.

Just below Wisconsin, in Illinois- we've enacted a 60% increase in income taxes- both personal and corporate. It hasn't even made a dent in the public pension problem. Is your solution to implement even higher taxes? Push it off the State role and down to the local level where they will have to increase property taxes greatly? Take a look at California- not even for sure they are capable of estimating how short they really are?

The #1 one cause of causing states to lose revenue and start running in the red, was gasoline costs!

#1 by far............the oil companies raped the transportation budgets of states, individuals, and families, in addition to the school transportation budgets. Gas had to be purchased when other bills had to be let go.

At the same time, the loose and unregulated, run-wild without Glass-Stegal banks consequences became evident. No longer could their deceit be kept hidden from the public.

I would recommend that all subsidies given to oil companies be redirected to school systems for transportation budgets with no further increases to costs for consumers.

I would respectfully disagree, but that is the nature of opinions. I did a quick google search- the latest Obama budget submission calls for additional revenue from the elimination of oil subsidies. Heck- I can agree to that. But the problem is that it saves $36.5B annually. That just happens to be a drop in the bucket. Every little bit helps, but that is just a little it when it comes to the Pension issue.

As for the shortfall- no one is really smart enough to really know how much it is- from the Feds all the way down to the local library board. A year ago, the Congressional Budget Office, using 2009 data, estimated it to be nearly $1T, or a thousand billion. Most pension managers have some factor of like 8% return built i- when Treasuries return maybe 2.5%. The problem is getting worse. People living longer, etc, also adds to the gap. There will be a uge need to address this issue. It's about time people took a realistic and factual view of it.

Ain't it amazing how every single solution to the debt problem is just "drop in the bucket" when it comes to raising taxes on the wealthiest/or cutting corporate welfare, but by all means cut/slash and burn the safety nets for the poor will really get the job done.

"Only a drop in the bucket" is a standard talking point of republicans to excuse their greed. I reject it completely..........not acceptable as a substantive argument.

So- both sides have talking points that are silly. And solutions are needed. Walker is trying a soluiton in Wisconsin. I will give Quinn, In Illinois, credit- he is pushing hard to get the legislature to fix this problem, he just isn't able to get machine politics to work with him. California may be just swept away into the ocean of debt they've compiled. Don't just look at the state, look at the cities and local units as well. The only solution the Democrats in Illinois Statehouse have proposed is to push the problem down to the local level and brankrupt them.

Point is- there is a real problem. If your solution is to continue to allow public pensions to grow unabated, then get ready to grow taxation along the broadest base ever, cause you will run out of rich to tax (or you will have to continually redefine rich down the income pole. By the time you solve it this way, maybe rich will be any family over $50,000 per year)

There isn't anything wrong with the statements made in the video. The point is employee protection........which is what educators are, just that employees trained for specific responsibilities.

It costs nearly $ 70,000 dollars for a 4 year college degree living on campus in order to be eligible for a teaching certificate currently by state schools. And costs, are rising. It costs another $ 8,000-10,000 for a Master's degree. Trained professionals should be compensated appropriately.
