George H.W. Bush's assistant secretary of education was a supporter of "no child left behind", charter schools and merit pay. But now Diane Ravitch speaks out against Governor Scott Walker in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
She joined Ed Schultz Friday to discuss the GOP’s war on education.

One real Republican. She has guts to go after Walker and other Republican.
What happens to you people after the blowout election? Please don't do this again, what an incredible waste of money.
ok Patrick but if you lose you have to shoot yourself
Have you ever correlated far-left and visceral hate? Could be an interesting experiment.
It's so funny to watch you all embrace a GOP politician that shows a "little" support for the opposition, but once they walk away from you; it's the same old predictable name calling and such. Scott Walkers public education policies are fiscally sound, sustainable, and get power back to the local communities for their school systems (his reforms are working) vs. the large leftist bureaucracies that are rife with fraud, waste and abuse that don't help the children of the state; only filling the pockets of the unions (raping tax payers). Dems have NO record and No plan for Wisconsin.
Occupy, You are so right. I doubt anybody on this blog will respond to your comments.
Yep like the true yellow back republicans you are you fail to understand that when a republican comes to their senses and gets something right they get credit for it. You rabid little whiners just fail as human beings and like spoiled little whiners you have to eat everyones cake or you whine whine whine. The only thing right about waco is the way he leans, everything else is just pure racist homophobic anti American hatreds.
Nice training wheels on your bicycle in your photo. Noticed no one is on the bike. Fall off again? LOL
Either you are 8 years old or you never grew up. I mean really wacko play ground taunts, how childish can you get.
He never and will never grow up. These clowns don't understand, it's not what party it is, it's how you act. They the clowns act the same as most republicans. There are some Dems that act the same way. It has nothing to do with "party" and everything to with how a person thinks, feels, and acts as a human being. Something our rightie disrupters will NEVER understand.
Glad to see you hold Whom to the same standard.... LMAO!!! Now go put on your big boy pants and stop whining.
2012 budget for the dept of education $80 billion...
Money gone down the drain.
Here is Diane Ravitch's opinion piece that Ed stated above:
Also, to correct some misconceptions, Ravitch was a registered Democrat when she was appointed assistant secretary of education under the Bush administration.
Sorry, but my link to Ravitch's op-ed didn't post for some reason.
Record enrollment in Milwaukee and Madison toward private schools. Public education from the Union backed schools has been a 8 year.decline, quality of education.
And your sources are???????
Exactly! Here are the numbers for the last 8 years that can be easily looked up online.
Private school enrollment in WI has steadily decreased (except years 2007-2008):
2012-124,668
2011-125,372
2010-126,812
2009-130,800
2008-133,606
2007-133,419
2006-135,033
2005-136,792
Public School enrollment actually increased from 2005-2007:
2005-864,757 2006-875,174 2007-876,700
There has been a decrease from 2008-2012, but not as significant as private schools IMO:
2008-874,633 2009-873,586 2010-872,436 2011-872,286 2012-871,105
Please note that this data is for the entire state of WI.
The number of people going to a school should replace its test scores so that this enrollment discussion can become relavent. Fact of the matter is our school syste is failing private, public(the majority) all of it. Sure you can compare some better privatized schools and think they're better when you compare it to the absolutely dirt low pathetic public schools we allow in this country but compare them to any other school system, a successful system and thye are still doing not so well. Fact is our schools such because of what's taught not who's teaching.
Go look at what successful countries are doing and compare that to what we're and see what stands out. Now the bobblely head community will not but other might and those folks will see the unions and educators not a huge difference. Rigor, totally different.
Finland, Finland they're number one privatization is not how they got it done. Making it about money does just that makes it about money not the kids, so unless you view children as currency that's a not a real solution.
Fact is that most of our system is public and we're not going to be able to change that, maybe in a decade or two but we need to compete now.
Commence right wing sermonization
Finland does not have privatization! Their teachers are 100% unionized and there is no standardized testing in Finland!!! Students in Finland take one test a year and it is not created by outside test companies like Pearson who are making billions a year!! The teachers in Finland create the tests!
Watching the video on what was going on in Philadelphia and listening to Diane Ravitch last night, I cried. As a former teacher in the inner city of Chicago, I cannot believe the hatred that the GOP governors have for public education. Yes, we have to improve our public education system because it does not work well but destroying the whole system and replacing it with an exclusive charter schools is NOT the answer. As President Obama has said and rightly so, we need to look at what is working and duplicate these things. As the saying goes, you don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Plus a quality public education for ALL children (PL 94-142 includes special needs children) is mandated by the constitution, which the GOP claims to respect and follow. We are aware of the fact that the GOP wants to push their libertarian agenda will not accept it. I am so proud of the parents, students, teachers and others who stood up to Gov. Corbett and in the end they will be the winners and he will loose. We as a country know how to make lemonade out of the lemons which the GOP is throwing at us. Which gives me great hope that out of diversity, greatness will come and the public schools will finally get what has been needed for a long time, more parent and community involvement so our children can really be all that they can be.
Oh no, the GOP "hatred" for public schools. More nonsense and extremist language from the radical fringe. If you mention REFORM, the left calls is DESTROY. If the GOP says they disagree, the left calls it HATE. Wisconsin citizens are tired of the blame game and radical nonsense of the Democrats that have failed them in the cities across the great state and are voting for their best interests. This is why many Democrats are now voting for Walker this Tuesday according to the polls. Get real lefties.
Carol - you could be right state wide won't question you.
Larry - your up to your HORSE &%$# again, look it up yourself its all over the web. Chicago has a waiting list up to one year. So get to work. And prove me wrong.
Why you open your mouth and you are proven wrong. Why? Because you are a tea bagging republican who is incapable of honesty. How do we know this? Easy you are a banned re reg that got thrown off and instead of just writing it off as you have nothing anyone wants to hear, you make up a new name and continue to post right wing talking points that the GOP have been repeating since 1979. What don't you seem to understand, just because you are not smart enough to figure out that the GOP hasn't had a new thought in their heads since 1979 doesn't mean we haven't gotten tired of hearing the GOP thoughtless nonsense. You sold yourself rather cheap, really 5 cents a word is not going to make you wealthy in 25 life times. Hows it feel to be the butt of every joke the Koch brothers tells about their dumb supporters in the 1% club you will never be a member of.
Whom is.that you.again. why aren't you
at Wisconsin State Capital rallying the Libs with your tin cup with Al Sharpton
Your such a Corn Ball. Lol lol
And once again you prove yourself wrong and still have nothing to say. How surprising.
Hows it feel to be the butt of every joke the Koch brothers tells about their dumb supporters in the 1% club you will never be a member of.
Whom
He MAY never become a member of the 1% club, but one thing is certain you SURE AS HELL never will.
Except jerry the 1% club doesn't impress me like it does you. To bad for you that you can't seem to grasp that some people are happy with their lives and wouldn't trade for all the money that Gates has. Just because you base your self worth on money doesn't mean everyone else is as shallow as you are.
It's your job to back up your "facts" not ours to disprove you. Learn how it works before you try your BS here.
Larry...when are you going to back up your "fact" that Zimmerman attacked Martin outside of the gated community on a public sidewalk?
Lots of big talk from a guy who never backs up his statements.
Just because you base your self worth on money doesn't mean everyone else is as shallow as you are.
I base my self worth on successes and failures that I've had and making a few bucks along the way is part of that. I'm flattered by the fact that I'm one of liberalism's targets. Liberals need me I don't need them and they let me know that every day when I hear Obama telling you guys he's going to put his hand in my pocket, pull everything out and give it to his minions.
He made one very very critical mistake....he didn't ask me he told me!!!
Nice map Larry.
It is not only Republican who are fighting against Public Unions because of budget shortfalls, like this blog would make you believe. It is also Democrats. The attached Reuters article shows how San Jose, CA, is using the ballot box to reduce pensions and increase contributions. The ballot will pass.
By Peter Henderson | Reuters – 4 hrs ago
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A radical plan to slash public employee pension benefits gets voted on by the residents of Silicon Valley's San Jose on Tuesday - a decision that could set an important precedent for many other cities, not only in California but across the nation.
The nation's 10th-largest city is also one of the wealthiest, but over the past several years it has cut its municipal workforce by a quarter, laying off cops and firefighters, shuttering libraries and letting street repairs fall by the wayside.
The problem? Mayor Chuck Reed says it's simple: Retiree benefit costs eat up more than a quarter of the city budget - and are growing at a double-digit rate. The solution he is pushing at the ballot box, after city council approval, would slash benefits for workers, increase employee contributions - and almost certainly prompt a precedent-setting legal challenge from the public employee unions.
"The best metaphor is cancer," said Reed, a Democrat known as more of a technocrat than a firebrand, who is now cast as public enemy No. 1 by public employee unions. "It started a long time ago, it goes for a long time, and then it becomes life-threatening."
It's a challenge other cities in California will soon face. "Our problem is nearly universal in the state," he added. "It's just a question of timing."
Public finance woes are nothing new in California. The state budget deficit stands at an estimated $15.7 billion for next year, requiring further cuts in state services and, if Governor Jerry Brown has his way, higher income and sales taxes. Local governments and school districts have struggled for years to make ends meet.
The pension problem, though, may be the mother of all budget issues - for California, for its cities and counties, and for other states and municipalities across the nation. The main California state retirement systems have a total shortfall in pension-plan funding of close to half a trillion dollars, a Stanford University study estimated. The bill is not due at once, but payments on it grow steadily and can eventually squeeze out even basic services. Public officials like Reed, and academics who have studied the issue, say the day of reckoning is nigh.
San Jose is not the only city making tough choices. In San Diego, voters will also be asked to approve a pension-cutting ballot initiative on Tuesday. In Stockton, city officials, unions and creditors are engaged in a mediation process aimed at avoiding a municipal bankruptcy - and public employee pensions are an achingly large part of the problem.
I decided to look up Outlaw’s claim because I was curious to see if it had the same trend as the state totals. Dane County’s public school enrollment has actually shown a steady increase. I only went back 5 years because I wasn’t seeing any major shifts.
Dane County (Madison) public school enrollment:
2012-73,126 2011-70,011 2010-68,487 2009-67,441 2008-67,541
Milwaukee County public school enrollment:
2012-139,393 2011-140,704 2010-140,241 2009-141,942 2008-143,566
Here are the private school stats. Both counties have had a yo-yo effect. I don’t think the stats are significant enough to be making any claims that droves of students are leaving public schools in these cities and that the voucher program has been a success, especially not in Madison.
Dane County(Madison) private school enrollment:
2012-6,492 2011-6,696 2010-6,516 2009-6,635 2008-6,447
Milwaukee County private school enrollment:
2012-39,894 2011-39,408 2010-39,996 2009-39,795 2008-39,801
Hey Carole quick question who gives a damn how many people are enrolled where, the number of people is a aspect of quality?? Since when does that matter?
The education all of them are getting is worthless.
Finland Finland they're number one privatization 'aint how they got it done
You need to get your facts straight on Finland. Their school system is 100% unionized, they have zero standardized test, and there is NO privatization! Goggle it and READ!!!
Try actually reading instead of repeating what you here some talking heads (who have never been to Finland) say on TV.
And as far as your question, I was simply commenting on Outlaw's claim. He insinuated that droves of students are leaving public schools due to the quality of education.
That's GOOGLE!
I was typing way too fast. "hear not here" I haven't had my cup of coffee, yet! LOL I will post an excellent article on Finland shortly.
Yes this is what I said.
Re-examine
"Aint" is considered to mean "not" or "isn't"
Thus this statements translates to mean Finland is number one in public education and privatization is not involved in their school system.
I'll accept your apology in advance, no worries everyone makes mistakes now and then. No hard feelings.
There you go Liberals... real facts and sources vs. your nonsense of lies, distortions, assumptions and half truths. The truth doesn't have an agenda; it is what it is. So keep on spinning as it's all your party has for its failed record across the country and in the White House. Ole Whom is the hobo that wanders around town looking for handouts.
Real facts from right wing posters. yeah when pigs fly or a republican tells the truth.
What a character! Look at what you wrote:
"Real Facts from right wing posters..... when a republican tells the truth."
Thank you! We agree! LMAO!!! It's so much fun playing with the uneducated masses here! Sweet!

The left cries about freedoms being whittled away, but what about a persons choice to not join a Union? If you are taking tax payer money to be a public school teacher a condition of work should not be to join a union for that job! We see in WI that given a choice many are opting out, membership has dwindled. The left has used that money to back democrats, if I am a teacher, forced to pay dues, and my money goes to something I think is garbage, that is so unfair. I hope a Walker win gets other states to follow.
that's easy., go find a non union job.
BUT it is unfair for the union to negotiate better pay and better benefits and for non-union members to benefit from those who do stand up and fight.
Now if your willing ot cut your own pay and your own healthcare an dpnesion plans and not get the same as those who joined and fought for those benefits then all is good
but the fact is you would no join but expect the same as those who did and fought, so the only way to keep that from happening is....
You want a union job you join the union.
You do realize you have the freedom to choose a non union job some where else
If I want tot work for a job that is paid by taxpayer money, I shouldn't have to join a Union as a condition to work. If I think I am better off going it alone, that should be my freedom to do so. Many people in WI are now enjoying that freedom if tomorrow plays out right will continue to do so.
Eric- too bad it doesn't matter a damn bit since you're ole buddy scott is on a mission to fire as many people with those jobs as possible to begin with
Why are we assuming, without living there, that we understand anything about the local public unions and how they operate? I come from a union family and I can personally say that not all unions are good, particularly ones that provide public services. The public transit union that my father faithfully paid his dues to was a crooked as the day is long and everyone there knew it.
I have seen the teacher's union for my niece's school deny people the chance to volunteer at the school to keep the elementary school library open during a budget crisis. Are you telling me a concerned parent can't stamp a due date in a book so that kids have a chance to read because they don't shell out union dues? That they can't volunteer their own time FOR FREE to help the children and improve the state of their education because the librarian, which had to be cut, was a union position? I'm sorry, but most teacher's unions I have seen, including the one my sister worked for as an elementary school teacher, do NOT care about the kids. They care about the teachers and the teachers benefits so they can continue to collect dues. They get into pissing contests with the administration, forcing programs to be cut that could still be kept running, at the expense of the children. It's sick, it's wrong, and it needs to be changed.
The first thing that should go is the concept of tenure. It should not be so difficult to fire an incompetent or ineffective teacher that the only way to get these substandard people out of the classroom is to promote them out and have the supervise people that are actually competent.
John, here's an excellent article on why teachers need unions. I hope the link posts.
Newsvine is not letting me post links. I guess it's because I haven't posted enough comments on this blog. I don't have any problems on Maddow's blog.
