Democrats pretend to represent the regular guy and the downtrodden but did nothing while child poverty climbed after Clinton's 1996 Welfare Reform Act and then Clinton's 1999 Citicorp Relief Act that set the stage for the first act of Bush2 that tanked our entire economy from which corporations are now doing fine but not us. Now you have Ed Rendell stating that Americans must give up social programs we've been paying into for many years. The answer to both parts in your first question is President Clinton. He went along with the Gingrich-led contract-on-America Republicans. Your response didn't address that directly nor as I figure accepted that as causal of our current economic condition. So, who is being ignorant? You don't know if I'm Republican and I don't think my comments are ignorant and I am open-minded to solution, not intollerant of others ideas that could be solution. And, since when does winning the intelligence battle win the war when it's the emotion and moral sense that figures in so much more than "intelligence". Other than that, I agree completely with you and ask you to consider that as lousy as Republican ideas are, even in minority they've successfully bullied fearful Democrats, starting with Reagan, and to me those Democrats are the worst for having misrepresented their constituents by constantly following Republicans to the right. nothing is more clear than the fact that the congressional democrats suck at messaging. They let the gop spit on them and do nothing. The situation on poverty is you've got one side saying it's a publicity stunt and one side saying we should think about it. I suppose one could argue neither are great but the denialists are nothing like the otherside. I don't see that idea at all.

Let's run the real numbers:
Since the mid 60's we have spent over $17 Trillion on means tested government income re-distribution programs. We are now over $15 Trillion in debt and have
- 46 million people on food stamps,
- over 40 million kids getting free school lunches,
- 9 million more on WIC,
- about 8 million in subsidized housing,
- 5 million on TANF,
- 8 million on SSI (including 1.2 million kids),
- about 49 million on Medicaid and
- 71 million households (47% of tax filers) not paying income taxes primarily because of EITC and the Child Tax Credit.
Does anybody really think more debt or taxes to pay for more income re-distribution programs is really going to help anything? We already have 70 programs now.
How can a tax system be called "fair" when 47% of households are getting a free ride on the backs of the 53% who are paying income tax and carrying their own weight in society? What part of that is sustainable? Do we really want a society where half the people have to be carried by the other half? That is neither freedom nor equality.
All the corporations combined have never received this much of the taxpayers money. The cost of all the wars this country has ever fought doesn't come close to this massive shift of wealth.
And no - I am not wealthy. I am tired of paying other people's bills while tens of millions have been trained to keep crying "woe is me". And I see their "benefits" just keep growing and getting passed from generation to generation.
It is going to take individual responsibility and millions of decent paying private sector jobs to get us out of this mess, NOT more government intervention. No, I don't have the answer as to where those jobs will come from. I just know it will not and should not be from the government.

Given that the Bush tax rates "cost" about $1.5 trillion dollars over 10 years, that the "unfunded wars" cost about $1.4 trillion dollars over the same time, I am waiting with baited breath to see how you come up with the other $12 trillion in deficit.

The higher unemployment rate and the fewer jobs can all be due to the Bush era or should I say error tax laws, which are still in place as Congress won't allow them to change. Plus, since Congress hasn't passed the Transportation Act or the Jobs Act or allowed the wealthy to pay their fare share. Thus, Bush's trickle down economics are still in play and causing America to not move forward. Please have MSNBC stop putting President Obama down. He has submitted several solutions to our economic problems that have been totally ignored by Congress . Nothing has changed economically since that horrible error of unpaid wars, low taxes on the wealthy, a weakened and hurting middle class. Smith and West make a lot of sense. I feel that if President Obama is re-elected we can have a symposium on eradicating poverty. I do not see that possibility if Romney is elected because he and his financial cohorts live in a state of denial. Their only focus is on money and power and not on what is good for America and its people. I agree that democracy is at risk if we cannot solve our employment challenges or the poverty of the women and children. The solutions are available but there has to be a strong desire and commitment to resolve these issues. To me the amount of monies the GOP is using to defeat a President who has started to take us in the right direction is immoral. How many people could be helped with this money? Money is not good or bad. It is what you do with it that is important. You can use it to increase your wealth and /or power or you can use it to help those less fortunate. The Citizens United ruling has led to the worst in people instead of the best in people. Hopefully we as a people can undo what the Supreme Court has sanctioned so that we can once again become a nation that protects and helps its people to live a good life and provides opportunities for all instead of a select few.
