The Republicans are trying to find any argument with which to counter the president's elucidation of Romney's "record", but he's got a lot more problem with the evangelical right's dislike of his faith, which orthodox evangelicalism holds as "non-Christian". You need to remember that spending originates in Congress. Bill Clinton was handed a Republican Congress. They handed Bill Clinton a surplus budget. All he did was sign it.
Anyway, the Obama Administration is trying to say that they have reduced Government spending to the lowest rate of growth in almost 60 years. That is true only after Republicans took control of the House in 2010. The two years prior to that, spending rose by more than double digits.

I voted yes on this, because the Democrats are so weak. President Obama is doing a great job of campaigning, but where are the other leaders of the Dems? The DNC under the "leadership" of Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a total failure - look no further than the Walker recall in Wisconsin to see that she is a turncoat. Why she was chosen for this position is beyond reason; remember how she conducted herself in the debt ceiling debacle? It's hard to imagine a worse choice for that critical position.
This election can not be the responsibility of grassroots like us alone. We have to have some big bucks to match the Repugs who have zillions of $ because of Citizens United. It's horrible that elections are now more than ever before won through $ spent on media misinformation from the Repugs, but Dems can not get FACTS out into the general misinformed population because although we have people power, our donations are not being spent productively.
So YES, Robme is getting away with his lies, and he will continue all the way till November unless the Dems with big money come through for us like Big Money is coming through for him. It's heartbreaking for real Americans, but that is the reality of post Citizen United America.

With the way the President is picking apart all his arguments, absolutely not. And I take exception to this notion that President Obama not taking the passive approach to disproving Romney's statements will cost him support and that it's risky for him to go after Romney early. Among who? The big corporations who are sitting on more money than the value of the GDP of a small country and won't invest in new workers unless the government keeps the Bush tax cuts in place or keep in place policies that allow them to put up outside the country just so they won't have to pay their fair share of taxes when the tax revenue coming in is already at it's lowest point in decades? Those same corporate types that are seeing record profits and mind blowing executive compensation doled out due to worker productivity going through the roof while workers' pay has held steady over the past decade? The same corporate types who despite the above are breaking their necks to try to get President Obama out of office and already aren't going to vote for him?? Is Romney and the Republican distortion machine waiting to dump on the President? NO! So why should the President be expected to just sit there and not counter the BS Romney or the Republican Party puts out there? That's the mistake that Senator Kerry made when he was running against Bush. So I say every time the Republicans get out there with some bull that they know isn't true, the President goes straight to the people and show how and why what they put out there is ridiculous. And yes the debates will be entertaining for that reason.

You're right, but taxes are supposed to go up. The republicans don't want anyone to know they want people to believe that the real problem is 'overspending' but taxes should have been raised when we went to war with two different countries at the same time, but we had an idiot for president so not only did we attack the wrong country but we went into debt to do it. Taxes need to go up. The Bush Tax Cuts need to expire. If they were wrong for the wealthy, then they were wrong for everyone. Obama wants to pick and choose who they expire for. They need to expire for everyone.
That argument would fly if Republicans weren't trying to make taxes go up on the working poor and middle class while permanently keeping them at the Bush rates for the uber rich.
