Why is it okay for the government to "stay out of your bedroom" but it is okay for them to pass laws regulating how you live with someone in the privacy of your own home? Going deeper, we find Steve Westly, identified by the Post as "an Obama fundraising bundler" who "served part time" on an Energy Department advisory board and "communicated with senior White House officials."

They lost confidence and even though we did not default on our debt, they did not trust us and the Dow dropped to 6000 points. People were upside down on their mortgages, they were losing their jobs, they were being threatened with changing medicare and privatizing social security. They were doing all that they could to bust unions, etc. Under Obama the stock market is higher than when Bush was in office. There has been steady job growth under Obama, unemployment is dropping, and people are seeing that the only people Republican politicians care about are themselves and their wealthy buddies. The hell with everyone else. So the Republicans started a new strategy, attack the President on foreign policy. Well, that backfired big time. Obama was able to do what Bush couldn't, he got Bin Laden, helped Egypt take their country back and also protected Syria without putting boots on the ground. Now all these idiots have left is a flip flopping rich guy who destroyed companies that he became in charge of, sucked out all of the profits, stole the pension plans and health care of the workers and took his greedy profits and hid them in 9 different countries hoping we would never find out what he did. However, when you run for president, everything comes out. I agree, that is desperate, but that's all they can do because they don't have a candidate that can beat Obama. Then the civil rights movement started, Jim Crow came into being, and that is when the Republican party started to change and has become the party it is today.

What you and others do not realize is that in their wisdom, they knew we needed a two party system to keep in check and balance all views. They know that it would be bad for this country to become too conservative - it would also be bad for us to become too liberal.

That said what are the tax breaks for "wealthy Americans". In part I assume it depends on what you mean by wealthy or tax break. So lets assume an individual with adjusted gross income of $700,000. Likely a wealthy person, so what "breaks" does that person get. If by "break" you mean tax rate, that person pays the highest tax rate, so where is the "break". If you believe that such a person should pay a higher rate that currently provided by law, then fine, that is legitimate topic of discussion, but that is not a "break".

Accodingly that person does not get a "break" in terms of rate. So what other "breaks" do they get, answer is none. The fact is just the opposite, at that level of income that person will likely pay a higher AMT, will have his or hers itemized deductions reduced or eliminated, not be able to deduct student loan interest, not be able to get various tax credits etc. etc. The fact is that the "breaks" in the IRC are all for the most part directed to the lower tax brackets.

If this person has income subject to capital gains treatment, that person would pay the same rate as everyone else. If you pay the same rate as everyone else, that at least in my view is not a break.

Unfortunately the talking point of tax breaks for the rich has been said so many times that people actually believe it. As indicated above the facts are to the contrary.

the fact is that most tax breaks in the IRC are loaded at the lower brackets- not the higher brackers- a tax break is something that reduces your taxes that you would other wise have to pay- e.g. tax credits, deductions etc.

Call it what you want. When income inequality becomes this great, it is a disaster for that which sustains and stabilizes a country: The middle class.

The time which showed the greatest productivity and equality of income was when the wealthy paid at a nearly 90% tax rate. Things started to go down hill around 1980, and the decline has continued, and recently escalated due to the Bush tax CUTS.

Thanks- assuming that the increase revenue that result in increasing tax rates could be captured and used for debt reduction or to medicare etc I would support that even though that means I have to pay higher taxes.
