President Barack Obama shot back today at (supposedly) Obama surrogate and Newark Mayor Cory Booker's criticism that Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital was a "distraction" in the campaign.
Booker called Obama's attack ads on the private equity firm "nauseating" on Sunday's Meet The Press on NBC.
At a news conference today at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Chicago, Obama said that the goal of a private equity firm is to “maximize profits,” which Obama contrasted to his job as president.
"Your job is not to simply maximize profits. Your job is to make sure everyone has a fair shot," Obama said.
"The reason this is relevant to the campaign is my opponent, Governor Romney, his main calling card for why he should president is his business experience," Obama said. "He’s not going out touting his experience in Massachusetts. He’s saying, 'I’m a business guy, I know how to fix it, and this is his business.'"
“And when you are president as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, your job is not simply to maximize profits,” Obama continued. “Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country gets a fair shot.”
Obama's campaign today released the second ad in two weeks focused on Bain.

I'm fairly certain you won't see Obama running on the fact that he promised if the Republicans would pass his stimulus, he would be able to keep unemployment under 8%. He is not going to run on getting out of Gitmo. He's not going to run on the Patriot Act. He's not going to run on his ability to plug American Citizens before they can cause damage (though, he should). He's not going to run on the plan to have lots of people pay for medical insurance. He's not going to run on passing 3 Free Trade Agreement (Though, he should). He's not going to run on much of anything he actually has done- only on the fact he is not George Bush and has never ran a company that made an employment decision. But Republican politics have not sought to get work done since day one of this presidency when they were in the minority they were able to successfully play that they simply were not let in on the power. Some, myself included, were willing to accept that and believe they had changed and recovered from their divisive social issues addiction. Now they have the majority in the house and much more power and the senate and that has led them to continuing to put nothing on the table.

How many "jobs" did Bush create? Under his aegis Goldman-Sachs went under, ENRON went under, AIG and GM almost went under, not to mention Ford and Chrysler. AIG was taken over by Bush, not Obama and the Republican Party, as a whole, wanted the American car industry to go belly-up. They want no government regulation over the investment industry which caused the mortgage crisis and want to keep the BUsh tax rebate for millionaires despite a burgeoning federal deficit. Bain Capital is very relevant because we have built up a business culture in this country where if its heads the swindling class from Wall Street wins and if its tails the workers lose their benefits, jobs, health care, and anything else the swindling class from Wall Street can cart away. Something like 40,000 factories went out of business under President Bush's tenure. The recent problems at JP Morgan show that we have to have serious antitrust actions against the five biggest Wall Street banks that own 52% of all the wealth in this country. President Theodore Roosevelt would immediately say that too much power has been accumulated into too few hands and would have went on the offensive against these monopolists. According to Professor G William Domhoff, Sociology Dept. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, in his "Who Rules America, Wealth, Income and Power", the richest twenty percent of households owned 85% of the total net worth and 93% of the financial wealth in the U.S. in 2007. This leaves the bottom eighty percent of households, those who work for hourly wages and salaries, with 15% of the total net worth and a mere 7% of the financial wealth. This wealth inequality means that the middle class has no more money or credit to tap into. Wealth inequality like this caused the 1929 Wall Street crash and the Great Depression. In 2008 this same amount of wealth inequality caused the 2008 Great Recession.
Wealth inequality of this magnitude mean a sour future for middle class people and working class people. If you are looking for a reason why go look at South Africa. The Boers own huge amounts of wealth in the diamond mines, real estate, etc. nearly everyone else lives in a slum. The Boers live in walled off residences guarded by men with automatic weapons and police dogs. This is the vision of Mitt Romney for America: One percent at the top like the South African rich and everyone else gets to live in a slum. Republicans today should be ashamed of themselves.

Under his leadership, we've had 26 consecutive months of PRIVATE SECTOR jobs create. Still, more needs to be done, certainly not by Mitt Rmoney who has no record of creating jobs, even when he was the governor of MA (where he could have applied the jobs creation skills he developed at Bain Capital). MA was 47th on jobs creation under his leadership.

All this did was make President Obama sharpen his argument that private equity firms main goal is not to create jobs but it's to create wealth and profit which are too very different things. As he said in his response to that question Romney himself made this an issue because his main argument is he's better for the President's job because of his experience not as Governor of Massachusetts, which by the way ranked 47th in job creation under his tenure, but as a businessman at Bain. He said it masterfully if you think the only part of president is your job as president is only to worry about the bottom line and not the people who may have lost out then you don't understand the job as President of the United States. And if they fail then the various local businesses where those workers spend money like grocery stores, restaurants, clothing stores etc. also take a hit. Like it or not the companies based within these borders don't exist in a bubble and when they are properly invested in their workers, those workers go out and spend money. When those people spend money, those businesses they patronage make money so they in turn are able pay their workers and if they're lucky expand and hire more workers. Then those workers go out and spend money. And on and on and on. So as the one executive that the Rachel Maddow Show highlighted last week said. It's not big money executives who create jobs. It's consumers going out to spend money that create jobs. If consumers have no job, they can't earn money to spend money meaning companies from big corporations on down to mom and pop shops can't make money to invest in current or new workers. Basically where do the big execs think they get the money to pay and hire people? It doesn't come out of thin air. People on the other side of the political spectrum always like to believe the foolishness that the President doesn't believe in American exceptionalism, but it's awfully funny how they have been chomping at the bit to let an American industry fail in favor of that industry's foreign based competitors. Isn't that a contradiction to that pro-America mantra the Republicans claim to follow? And for the last time folks, when it comes to the American auto industry, unlike with that big banks, that was not a bailout but a LOAN that is being payed back to this day with interest meaning we the taxpayers made money on that investment. Can Wall Street and the big banks say they're paying back the taxpayer dollars they received?

downgrade- regardless of who was at "fault"- is meaningless- I believe that long term rates have trended down since the downgrade- not up- which would be the normal response to a credit rating downgrade-

Unfortunately, it seems like the current republican party has been high-jacked to such a great extent and speeding on such a NARROW, fixed path, that it's set 2 take this country down the same slippery slope it's headed for itself.
I'd urge U 2 begin the process of familiarizing yourself with the only real political party, whose leaders and membership have been on the vanguard of sounding the alarm and offering solutions to the multitude of problems we have been facing these past 3+ decades.
U can still support TRUE dem. politicians, but don't believe that our future will B secure if we accept the idea that ONLY a political system consisting of these two parties or only the dem. party over all 3 branches of gov't will save us.
That being said, I agree that the mass of everyday Americans, especially those from the bottom 60 percent get ACTIVATED (ie: the emergence of and organic growth of Occupy and similar movements will aide these traditionally politically inactive members of society ).... with the goal of displacing as many of the repo party politicians as possible -- that includes repo party office holders not only on Capitol Hill, but in governorships and state capitols across the USA USA USA.
One other thing : let's add the following to the needed infrastructure repairs, improvements, maintenance U referenced earlier ...
... tunnels, the national electric grid, potable water as well as sewer waste water pipes underground AND the treatment plants, nuclear power plants that pose a clear and present danger due to lack of maintenance and /or under-engineering (such as placement in EARTHQUAKE ZONES ), school bldgs., landfills that R "leaking" toxic waste into the ground and eventually our water tables, improper placement and deployment of cancer causing cell phone and other microwave energized towers and dish arrays, airport control towers and runways, leaking dams, dominance of corporate owned factory farms that are insufficiently regulated and leaking massive metabolic waste products from pigs, as well as other farm animals, insufficiently regulated energy industries like coal and oil ( in addition to the previously mentioned nuclear ), etc.
MAN, we shure got LOTS of employment opportunities... but not enuff political will, thanks to the likes of the old monied industrial robber barons and their prostitute politicians in the repo party-- AND their D.I.N.O. colleagues.
