I am also pretty sure that your income tax plan more regressive than the USA. Some interesting studies by liberals, and attacked by liberals, shows the US tax rate to be among the least regressive. Obviously this is because a significant percent of US pays zero income tax, automatically making it a very non-regressive system.

In Canada, most people who have income under $30,000 (equal to half the average Canadian income) get income tax refunds (as well as sales tax refunds quarterly).

You have to realize that the average Canadian's tax deductions are $20,000. The basic individual tax deduction (which everyone gets) is $11,500 alone for the 2012 tax year ($10,900 for the 2011 tax year. Therefore, a Canadian making $60,000 has taxable income of about $40,000, and pays 15% ($6000) on that income.

After those $20,000 of tax deductions, for taxable (not gross) income:

• 15% on the first $41,544 of taxable income, +
• 22% on the next $41,544 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income between $41,544 and $83,088), +
• 26% on the next $45,712 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income between $83,088 and $128,800), +
• 29% of taxable income over $128,800.

Those Canadian taxes also pay for EVERY Canadian to have health care coverage, Family Allowance ($100 per month per child under 18 for every Canadian parent), and Old Age Security Pension (about $500 or more over and above Canada Pension - Canada Pension is like your Social Security). You can apply to begin receiving Canada Pension at age 60.

All of these things are non existent in the United States, or Americans have to waste thousands of dollars a year paid to private companies for what Canadians get from the government at a fraction of the cost, paid for by this taxation.

If there is a church that does not support it, they don't have to participate. We are talking about CIVIL rights, not religious ones. You are insane if you think there are not going to be far more innocent caught in the legal trap and even more insane is that the real criminal is still lose on the street committing more crimes. There is no such numbers. What there is though is 43 convicted death row inmates were proven innocent after DNA excluded them from the crime. Now those 43 happened to be lucky that the state did not destroy the evidence used to convict them after they were sentenced, how many more there would have been is unknown as evidence was destroyed. Then in other states were there is no death penalty a few dozen more were released after DNA proved they were innocent of the crimes they were convicted of.

Now before you blow those off as well its only a small number, again that means while these 43 innocent people were waiting for capital punishment means 43 killers were running free. Not to mention just how many innocent had died before DNA testing as well as how many don't have DNA. Even with DNA testing proving innocent Governors have went ahead with the executions anyhow. So you are making a straw man argument when you ask for something that is unknown.

If an individual is going to be executed they have been given the death penalty that means they are on death row so cases which warrant the death penalty they are in prison. These people don't get out of prison so they don't really reoffend outside the prison walls very often. You are thinking of sex offenders or drug addicts but many if not most murderers don't get out for decades if they do at all which to my understanding is rare. So murderers don't really reoffend, they never get out a lot of the time.

I have no problem with the death penalty so don't anyone think otherwise but you do have to be sensitive to people who religiously believe it is murder...and well it is murder if you think about, it is killing someone so if you approach from a right to life perspective on this issue it makes sense to be against it

I've sat on juries where I have heard them say, "the police wouldn't have arrested them if they didn't do it". Our judicial system is too fallible to have a death penalty. I've worked within it and have seen the internal pressures and mis-use. I've seen police "pick" a "suspect" and build their case to prove that person did, when other evidence is ignored.

My criminal law professor ask the first day of class, "is the justice system just? NO. Is the justice system fair? NO. Is the justice system legal? SOMETIMES. That sums it up.

Yeah Larry like I said all it takes is to get the polices attention and they will go out of their way to try to nail you on something. The Triumph motorcycle dealer where I live got the police attention as he was the only Triumph parts dealer within 200 mile area and he got a lot of motorcycle club business, the state police post was less then 3 miles away and they deemed the clubs as outlaw clubs. The dealer stopped doing cycle trade ins because every month like clock work the state police would come in and check the trade in used cycles to see if they were stolen along with any used parts he bought, the state police found an engine case with a VIN number on it once and tried charging him with motorcycle theft, the DA then lowered the charge to receiving stolen property trying to force him to take a plea bargain after 9 moths of wasting his time in court the judge ruled there was no way the dealer could have known the part came off a stolen motorcycle as the only evidence of the crime was the engine case so the judge dismissed the case. That is the US justice system.

It is an old right wing myth of convicts to scare people into harsher laws that make it almost impossible for convicts to start a new life which forces the convicts to seek illegal means to support themselves because they find that no one will hire them after prison. What causes this is the prison industry is a money machine, more is spent on warehousing convicts then education, the last I checked it was over $2700 spent per convict, $3,500 if they can force the convict into GED classes, that is a month. So not only is more spent on convicts then education, it is also more then people on welfare and disability. Since Nixons Law and order garbage Prisons are now being privatized because the profit is so great. More tax dollars are spent trying, convicting and locking up citizens then is spent on welfare, education and SSI put together. Conservatives believe that it keep them safe from crime but reality is it just ensures more people getting convicted. There is a judge in my city who runs on his conviction rate every 4 years, he has a 100% conviction rate, meaning anyone who goes before him will be convicted no matter what evidence is presented or how outrageous the evidence is. He has been heard in court to say stuff like "oh I know the witnesses are lying, but something happened because the witnesses said it did". So much for guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He gets re elected every cycle because of his tough on crime stance.

And jerry is going to hate it even more when these prisoners get out, can't get a job and go on welfare. Even if they commit another crime. Who do you think pays jerry? Thankful, I have missed you all so much. I had surgery on Tuesday and just got home from hospital yesterday. I am on the road to recovery just take little while. I am lucky to have great health insurance and was able to have surgery. For all the women who may loose health coverage and deal with the mountains of issues we women have my heart goes out to them. Its so good to be back.

Ted, I will even call you sweetheart tonight LOL! Its so good to be back. I can truthfully say there is such thing as blog with drawl !!!! Believe me Ted never had surgery in my life till now and I do not want to hide out there.

I am still evolving on the same-sex marriage issue. I certainly believe all people should be respected and equal in the law. If I said that it didn't make me uncomfortable to think of two grooms or two brides going down the isle, I'd be lying. I refuse to lie about how I feel. I have believed all my life that marriage is between a man and a woman. It is hard for me to get past that, but I am trying. To redefine marriage may be wrong. I don't know.
