Here we go folks. The general election campaign is only a few weeks old and the #ObamaDerangementSyndrome is emerging at Mitt Romney's appearances.
At a Romney town hall today in Euclid, Ohio, a woman in the audience declared that President Obama is "operating outside the structure of our Constitution," and "should be tried for treason" while asking Romney about his views on the balance between the three branches of government.
Romney conveniently ignored the woman’s suggestion that Obama "should be tried for treason" and answered by saying he would respect the different branches of government if he became president.
Here's the complete question:
"We have a president right now that is operating outside the structure of our Constitution (applause). And I want to know, I want to know, I, I wa -- yeah, I do agree he should be tried for treason -- but I want to know what you're going to be able to do to restore balance between the three branches of government and what you are going to be able to do to restore our Constitution in this country."
"Well, as I'm sure you do, I happen to believe the Constitution was not just brilliant but probably inspired," Romney responded. "I happen to believe the same thing about the Declaration of Independence. I would respect the different branches of government if I am fortunate enough to become president."
Later while greeting voters after the event, Romney told reporters that that "of course" he doesn't believe Obama should be tried for treason.
So if he didn't agree, why didn't stand up to the woman and tell everybody during the actual town hall like John McCain did in 2008?
"I answered the question," Romney said. "I don't correct all the questions that get asked of me."
Yeah, that was the same excuse Rick Santorum offered when he allowed a woman in his audience to refer to President Obama an avowed Muslim and someone who is not legally our president. Watch the videos:
The Obama campaign was quick to pounce on Romney's no-response response.
"Time after time in this campaign, Mitt Romney has had the opportunity to show that he has the fortitude to stand up to hateful and over-the-line rhetoric and time after time, he has failed to do so," Obama campaign spokesman Lis Smith said today in a statement. "If this is the 'leadership' he has shown on the campaign trail, what can the American people expect of him as commander-in-chief?"
Why is this such a big deal? Treason is a very serious charge, the only crime specifically defined in the United States Constitution (Article III Section 3). It is punishable by death. For Romney to remain silent when such an serious accusation is thrown out willy nilly at his town hall is simply outrageous.
As mentioned before, the whole episode with Romney today brought to mind the infamous 2008 campaign event when then-GOP presidential nominee John McCain corrected an audience member who said Obama was an Arab. Watch the video:
By not doing the same as McCain, Romney has opened himself up to attack.

Maybe Romney did not want to dignify the woman's question by answering her? Shall we all dig deeper into every candidates questions he/she has been asked at these events and cherry pick only the ones that offend us?
It might be refreshing to hear romney take a real stand on something. He only remains silent when it is to his advantage. Otheriwise he open his mouth and insert his foot. This is his way of telling a lie without opening his mouth.

Romney didn't stand up to Limbaugh, he didn't say anything about Ted Nugent, he fired the gay spokesman because this Fisher guy complain, he stood on the stage and refuse to stand up for that gay soldier who was boo by the audience as he ask a question, and now this about the woman said the President should be tried for treason, and what does Mitt Romney do? If he is afraid to stand up to these people, what is going to happen if God forbid he wins, and they want him to do something he disagree with? Is he going to have the guts to stand up to them? A reporter from National Geographic went to Kenya to research Obama's heritage. Fair enough. The reporter learned that birthers went there also to try and disprove Obama's citizenship. To what extreme will these ghouls go to try to discredit Obama?

If I'm not mistaken the underwear bit is about something to do with the Mormon religion. President Obama is a christian and I know of nothing about the christian religion having anything to do with underwear. It is like what I hear about the Mormon church baptizing dead people, who has nothing to do with the Mormon church.Recently their was something about the Mormon church baptizing Ann Frank. John McCain had the guts & class to defend the President in a similar situation four years ago. Today, I am dismayed by our public discourse, but more dismayed by the fact that Romney will not call out his most offensive "supporters" for what they are--haters.
I was amazed when McCain let sara payme run off at the mouth, and remain un -corrected. This was the only heroic act I ever saw him do. No wonder this country remains so divided.....the republicans think that suggestions, lies and innuendos are the only way to go.

I think John McCain could have been a fair president, the same or better than Obama in his own right. But McCain/Palin, no. The damage blunder woman(palin) would have done to the nation could almost without a single doubt would have been easily greater than anything good McCain could do. But of course we would have gotten a new vice president by this point after all we're more than half way through.
Personally I choose consciously to believe that McCain didn't pick Palin and that it was his handlers and the national party chair. I don't see McCain ever being that foolish, or at least I don't want to think so. I have my own little Beck-style theory that Palin was put on the ticket to purposefully embarrass McCain for McCain/Feingold which regulated campaign contributions. We've all seen the power of a select group of richy riches and the power they have and their desire to spend huge amounts of money which McCain/Feingold wouldn't have allowed them to do so they wanted revenge on John McCain. They knew Palin was nutter and that he would be shamed and ruined with her as his running mate forever tarnishing his reputation because he would be too old to ever run for president again.

I saw the epitome of someone voting against their own best interests today. I was driving through a poorer section of north DM and went past a guy's house that was worth maybe $65,000, a cracker-box really, but it had one solar panel on the roof, no grass in the front yard and a ten-foot long banner on his chain link fence with Mitt Romney in huge letters! I just had to shake my head at how delusional Republicans are. What makes it even funnier is Reps aren't known for promoting solar or green technology! LOL
Thanks for your show Ed. I would love to see some of the reporters who witnessed statements such the 'you lie' during the Presidents State of the union, and the the 'tried for treason' comment, confront personally those making the statements. Let's see if these people can stand up to the scrutiny they unjustly put the President under. Let's give them one moment in the heat of scrutiny.

Of course I don't believe Obama should be tried for treason, that is Mitt Romney comment later in the day. But Mitt Romney didn't look that woman in the face who said that President Obama should be tried for treason, and tell her that he doesn't believe the President should be tried for treason. That would have been the time to do that, but the gutless Romney didn't do it. He is to darn afraid of the right wing base. What leadership. Stand up for right even if you have to stand alone. President Obama would have never allow a supporter of his to do that, without him telling that supporter to their face what he think. But this doesn't surprise me about Romney, he is the same guy who stood on the stage silently as the audience boo a gay solider who was in Iraq serving his country. But Mitt Romney said nothing.

Clearly, Romney does NOT know the Constitution. Article III, Section 3, Clause 1, of the Constitution defines treason as "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort." Mr. Obama has done neither. Also, Romney keeps claiming that he will do things that the President does not have the Constitutional authority to do. When Congress provides funding to an agency, the President must spend that money as directed when the budget has been approved. The Republicans are more concerned about a person's religiousness rather than their knowledge of the Constitution.
We also have real reasons to charge treason on Rep Paul Ryan, Rep Eric Cantor, Rep Kevin McCarthy, Rep Pete Sessions, Rep Jeb Hensarling, rep Pete Hoekstra, Rep Dan Lungren, Sen Jim DeMint, Sen Jon Kyl, Sen Tom Coburn, Sen John Ensign, and Sen Bob Corker, as well as Frank Luntz and Newt Gingrich. These 12 politicians and their 2 puppet masters met on Obama's inauguration day to plot to bring down this U.S. government and Obama's presidency at the same time that 100s of thousands of American troops were fighting in 3 wars, I say 3 because I'm including the illegal operations in Pakistan, started by George W. Bush. Every other Republican in the House and Senate followed the play book laid out by these traitors and ran with it, obstructing the LEGALLY ELECTED President and causing great harm to the U.S. around the world, and to the American People, not only causing the Full Faith and Credit of the U. S. to be harmed, but some of them, even going so far as to make BETS on Wall Street that the U.S. AAA rating WOULD be dropped and then MADE SURE IT WAS.
Even if they don't want to go so far as to call it the treason it is, it is, at the very least grounds for each and every one of these 12 to be systematically and immediately expelled from Congress and denied the opportunity to ever hold another office of public trust OR be head of any company or corporation that has dealings with any level of government for the rest of their lives.
