A bar owner in Georgia is under scrutiny for a controversial sign he put up about President Obama. The sign reads, "I do not support the n***** in the White House."
The bar’s owner, Patrick Lanzo claims he’s not racist but just exercising his First Amendment rights.
"I say just because you're offended by it doesn't mean you don't have the right to say something just the opposite,” Lanzo told Atlanta’s Fox 5.
Lanzo's bar, The Georgia Peach Oyster Bar, has a history of putting up incendiary signs. In 2009, he protested the healthcare law with a sign that read, "Obama's plan for health-care: n***** rig it."
The bar's website advertises itself as "the Original Klan, Klam and Oyster bar." More of these controversial signs can been found on his website here (WARNING: not suitable/safe for work)
One Paulding County administrator called the most recent sign "repulsive" and "embarrassing." He said at this point there is nothing the county can do to have the sign removed.

Hatred is the weakness of a fool.
Spot on, a "fool" he is.
I just want you guys to know not all of us here in Georgia think like this man. I am ashamed that this still happens in my state. I do not care what color this mans skin is....He could be purple with green strips and long as he is fair, cares about this country and it's citizens and does a good job...... what damn difference does it make. This kinda 1800s thinking is just ridiculous...This man is one of those same idiots who displays the bumper sticker with the rebel flag that says "heritage not hate".....yes a history of HATE is your heritage. I would like to thank this @!$%# for reminding America that there are still people in the south trying to fight the Civil War.
Jimmy Carter is from Georgia. He's a better representative. As are most of the Dixie Dregs.
Hermain Cain is from Georgia, hes a good representative as well.
Yeah as long as you are not a woman having to deal with the dirty old pervert that is. Herman the typical republican molester.
I say someone in the area ought to create some bumper stickers that say "I HATE N*****RS" and stick them on the pumpers the bar's customers.
This guy is looking for some attention. You have a constitutional right of freedom of speech however anything you say or post can and will be used against you in the court of law and in public opinion! There is a trend in the legal system and news media to use comments posted by individuals on social media websites such as twitter and facebook in legal proceeding. Make sure your comments can stand up in court and in the news media because you never know.
Iagree with him . he can express himself... thx for lettin me kno yur tru feelings......But i wont be be spendin another dime there nor should any black person..... PEACE1
freedom of expression always carried the weight of being retaliated against...there is sometimes a social/economic price to pay. If others break any laws exacting the "price" then the government will use their force to protect you and your rights. So go ahead and burn down the guys business then we'll burn down all the houses/businesses of blacks who have ever uttered the word "cracker" or "honkey"....deal? Oh wait...they'll burn them down themselves in the next race riot...it's what Trayvon would have wnated...this race stuff is getting really bad...let's give it up!! Deal?
Here we go again another republican without a clue of how racist is defined. I have never met a honky or a cracker seen his rights denied for being a cracker or honky.
Isn't that cute? YOU get to define who or what is "racist"! Who made you "king"?
Thanks for taking a break from defending George Zimmerman.
Wouldn't want to see his rights abused.
You may want to stay on topic, like for example, why you're okay with racism as long as it's a race YOU don't care for...
People like you are always quoting the law and the constitution, without respecting either one.
To you, they're just something to hide your offensive behavior behind.
"People like you are always quoting the law and the constitution, without respecting either one. To you, they're just something to hide your offensive behavior behind."
Based on what- that I corrected you on the First Amendment? Dude, you're trying to twist facts to fit your Worldview, when you should be doing the opposite. You don't even KNOW the Constitution, so you'd be better off getting educated than worrying about what I do.
Why don't you go to your favorite bar and have a drink? I'm sure Lanzo will be happy to see you there.
Great minds and all that.
"Why don't you go to your favorite bar and have a drink? I'm sure Lanzo will be happy to see you there."
I'm going to assume you didn't try out for the debating team in high school...
Neither did you.
"Neither did you."
If that were the case, it spells even worse fortunes for you, getting embarrassed by the likes of me, doesn't it? I just hit you with facts and all you can do is bluster emotionally before you wilt... pretty sad, actually.
Yup, you're the no. 1 "Master 'bater' in here alright.
"Yup, you're the no. 1 "Master 'bater' in here alright"
What wit! What intellect! Sheer brilliance from the Lone Star state! God help us all...
Yup, the home of rick (oops) perry, the moron you and the rest supported for president. God help us all is correct.
LOL! Rick who?!? You're deranged! I love the way you set up your straw-man "arguments" then charge right in to make your "point", never mind the fact that you're making up the claims you're knocking down! What a psycho, but I guess I shouldn't expect anything less from such a backwards part of the country. Sit back, "ya'll", relax, wipe the spittle from the corners of your maw- you're going to die of a heart attack if you keep ranting the way you've been.
'Backwards part of the country'..... This is YOUR country nitwit. The most CONservative state in the union, teabagger central. The funny part is yoy're 100% correct!
"This is YOUR country nitwit"
Buddy, if I were from Texas, I would slit my wrists. The fact that you proudly display it in your username speaks volumes... "ya'll"...
And much like a neutered dog, you don't get it. You should be ashamed of yourself talking trash about your fellow constituents like that. Wait till Oxyrush hears about this...
Oh, no, my redneck "friend"- it's you who doesn't "get it"- I'm not even a Republican! It's just your very limited amount of education, IQ, and lack of political savvy that prevents you from seeing what doesn't conform to the simple things you are capable of understanding. Hey, look at the bright side- you can always one-up someone from Oklahoma (that's the idiot pecking order, isn't it?) Yee-haw!!!
LOL...You dish your fellow nutcase teabaggers, now you're denying even being a republican? Should I add 'coward' to your list of qualifications now? Turn in your Nazi youth pin immediately!
LMAO! Wow- the "N" word (nazi)! Settle down, cowboy- you're foaming at the mouth! What a buffoon...
I wonder what kind of people go to His Bar!!
It's 2012 not 1912 talk like will only get you a job working for Fox News!!
Best ways to win against fools like this :
1) Boycott and spread the word to boycott
2) Vote Democratic, always, and vote to re-elect Obama
3) Expose his customers to the general public through the media and social networks
What are you going to "win" except to bring more publicity to his establishment? I'm going to assume that you don't frequent his place, right? So if he's not taking your money now, how is his not taking your cash later going to affect his bottom line?
Gotta protect your friends, Ric-O.
"Gotta protect your friends"
Hey, if you want to boycott and give free publicity to this guy, have at it. I guess you don't mind indirectly promoting the KKK...
I loved Mr. Lanzo in Deliverance. No one here respects celebrities anymore.
In a differnt racist issue how bout those 2 reporters in Norfolk that got beat up by a mob of African Americans. Where is the outrage where is the ACLU. Hell the police didnt even charge them with a hate crime. Well just 1 of them has been charged at all. Geese what a double standard we seem ro have.
If you look up the word "cracker" in the unabridged dictionary, you'll probably see this hemorrhoid's face. HE'S the one that black club owner was talking about...except everybody else with pale skin has to pay for it.
It just proves that even an escaped turd from the septic tank can become a 'successful' businessthing -- America, what a great country.
He's just piling on, trying to take advantage of the atmosphere that has been ratcheted up, the best medicine for Idiots like him, is to make him have to keep his sign up for 4 more years, and show there's more fair and decent people in this Country than he or others like him think!
That's exactly what we will do on November 6.
This all is kind of funny but sad also. Really, it is not a joke. A line should be drawn.
"A line should be drawn."
Who draws it? Can I be the one, because you may not like the outcome. How about we protect what freedoms we have left and let morons advertise that fact instead of worrying about censoring what we don't like?
@Ric-O,
I'm pretty sure that you did not say that about the Dixie Chicks, when one of them said that she was ashamed of President G.W. Bush for starting a dumb war in Iraq. What she said wasn't even close the racist act of this bar owner.
"I'm pretty sure that you did not say that about the Dixie Chicks"
And why are you "pretty sure"?
Because you don't understand the word racist.
"Because you don't understand the word racist."
You mean YOUR version of the word "racist", right? Why don't you spell it out, sparky? And by the way... what does that have to do with the "Dixie Chicks"?!?
Then please, enlighten us as to your definition of a racist. This should be good...
"Then please, enlighten us as to your definition of a racist."
It's no use pressing him, the guy won't respond. Just typical "hit and run" posts with no substance to back them up.
I'm waiting....
"I'm waiting...."
I've BEEN waiting, but he's not responding...
Poor little ric o a closet racist upset because he hasn't a clue about what racism is.
"Poor little ric o a closet racist upset because he hasn't a clue about what racism is."
So you're saying that you know perfectly well what "racism" is?!? Uh... that makes you a racist, dude.
Hell I'm still waiting for your definition...
I asked first...
How is this guy still in that business? The Bar thing could simply be a coverup for his real illegal activities, such for example as manufacturing crystal meth.
My response to this fool would be a hardy healthy middle finger wave. You can't fix stupid & thats just what he is.
I presume "n*****" is not for "nice guy" and with that being said...Jim Crow is DEAD!!! You don't need to be in ANY business, much less one that caters to the public, with an attitude like that. Shame on you and shame on anyone who agrees with you...I'm all for free speech, it's our right, but to display something so negative...it's just very bad manners.
If you don't like the person as President of the U.S. that ok, but respect the office.
apparently he respects the office of the Presidency, if a white guy holds it.
even if he is a STUPID uneducated white guy.
It is his first amendment right to say what he thinks, however this is the office of the President of the United States and whomever occupies it deserve respect . Just show how ignornat he is...
What will he say about the patrons twho frequent his bar.
I hate to be such a cynic but, I believe America will never move past it's racial history. American will not have an open and truly honest discussion about its past and how that past has shaped its future. I'm less worried about this obvious sad excuse for a human being, who was fed hate as a child and is too weak to rise above it and more worried about the systemic racism built into this nation's institution. The economic disparaties and disparaties in education, access to health care, prison rates, etc. These are the issues that worry me as an African-American and if you are an American who truly believes in equality you should be worried about them to. The fact that this is a news story only illustrates my point that America is infatuated with the novelty of racism but, shirks away from the real cost it exerts on American society.”
Patrick Lazo claims he's not a racist by referring to President Obama as a "@!$%#" IN PUBLIC on the sign in front of his Georgia bar. I say Lazo is a bald-faced liar.
"@!$%#" is a RACIST word. If you're not a racist, WHY USE IT?
I can only wonder if Lazo has secret ties to white-supremacist groups in Georgia. They claim not to be racists, either, but their words and actions clearly prove otherwise.
OMG! Ignorance is rampant. Judging from the picture, he needs the free advertisment and a couple of patrons, what a perfcect night!
Hey Lanzo, this is not freedom of speech, its "hate" speech. Hey America, see what happens when the GOP guts "PUBLIC EDUCATION"????, we inherit a generation or two of "MORONS".
"Hey Lanzo, this is not freedom of speech, its "hate" speech."
I wish you would've posted yesterday, when i had to educate several folks on free speech and the First Amendment. The posts are still up, if you want to take a gander. Suffice it to say, however, that repulsive as his sign is, it's still protected under the Constitution. Ask yourself this: if it's somehow against the law... why isn't he being arrested?
I did not say it is against the law! Can you read?
"I did not say it is against the law! Can you read?"
Right, didn't "say" it, just implied it. You do know that there is no such thing as "hate" speech, correct? Speech is either protected or it's not- "hate" has nothing to do with it.
People Free speech does not involved Insulting anyone, and no where in our constitution, 1st amendment implies using racially charge words against people. Yes you can be against the President, the governor, mayor, whoever but to use such a RACIALLY charged word is not 1st amendment unless one does not even understand what it means. He could have say he does not support the person in the white house. There are not two people in there beside Obama. He could have pushed it to that he does not like the black man in the white house, it could be questionable but to say The @!$%#, unless he is blind, insensitive and just expressing his KKK/ Jim Crow affiliation, this bar owner should be avoid at all costs in this town.
tresorier,
i agree.
i have never heard repubs so concerned about "free speech" as they have been since President Obama took office.
under the "umbrella" of "free speech", repubs seem to think they can say anything they can tell the president that he is a liar or "stupid", they can call a democratic activist a slut. but apparently what is good for the goose, isn't good for the gander. they love to defend free speech, but have a fit and demand an apology, when a comedian refers to sarah palin as something not so nice. its OK when repubs refer to democrats that way.
this bar owner is making a point, and it is an ignorant one.
"People Free speech does not involved Insulting anyone, and no where in our constitution, 1st amendment implies using racially charge words against people"
Then why would we need the First Amendment- to protect "civil" speech? "nice" speech? majority consensus? You along with the others who've made up their own definitions of "free speech" are wrong, of course, as I've been pointing out over the past couple of days. Unfortunately, no one has had the decency to admit they are simply mistaken. I'll make it easy for you: if what the guy says is NOT protected by the First Amendment, why isn't he in jail?
Ric-O: you are right free speech is protected under the constitution and all Americans have within reason the right to voice their opinions however disgusting. Although, somehow I doubt if a Muslim put up a sign saying Osama Bin Laden was hero that it would be tolerated. He would probably be asked by local law enforcement to take it down for disturbing the peace. This man and his n***er sign are obviously voicing the sentiment of his toothless back-water brethren in the community, which is why his particular speech is being protected. If this sign was put up in New York City, L.A or some other progressive city the local government would have demanded that the sign be taken down.
Also, free speech isn't exactly free, there are often costs to saying inappropriate things. Had this statemnt been made in the workplace he most definitely would have been fired and had he said it in the wrong crowd he might of caught a beat down. People have a right to say what they want BUT, they have to also accept the consequences of those statements.
Why was a man tried and convicted for yelling a cuss word on a remote stretch of river in Michigan? I heard no republican defend that persons first amendment right.
"If this sign was put up in New York City, L.A or some other progressive city the local government would have demanded that the sign be taken down."
Possibly, and then the ACLU would sue the municipality, win, and now he would not only have his place of business, but cash to burn. As far as saying those things in the workplace, your boss and the government aren't the same thing, as you well know- this is a First Amendment issue, not a workplace issue.
"Why was a man tried and convicted for yelling a cuss word on a remote stretch of river in Michigan? I heard no republican defend that persons first amendment right."
I vaguely remember the case- he cussed after falling in the water with a lady and her kid within earshot- A CLEARLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAW! Did any Democrat defend him? Did you? I sure as heck would- what part of the "FREE SPEECH" do you not understand? I notice you didn't mention the other Michigan case, where a Hispanic deputy had a woman thrown in jail because she overheard the woman telling her mother that there were too many "spics" in the restaurant. The lady was thrown in jail and eventually got off on a technicality- did you speak up for her?
I just read of a jurisdiction where they fine you $20 for "verbal assault", no joke. I can't wait until the city gets taken to the cleaners over that atrocity. ANY assault on the First Amendment, whether from the left or the right, must be fought tooth and nail. You may feel smug taking this idiot's "N" sign down, but guess what? Maybe tomorrow, YOUR comments will be the ones under the gun- what are you going to say when the First Amendment is no more?
Ric-O: The ACLU would only have a case if the sign was posted on private property. If the property were public they would not have a case at all. The question is does this man own the property or not. If he owns the bar and the property it sits on he and his wife/sister can post whatever they want. If it's owned by the public than no, he can't put up whatever garbage he deems acceptable.
Also, the problem with this "free speech" is it is not equal across the board. You cannot make a distinction between workplace rights and freedom of speech. Is speech free or isn't it? If I can lose my job for saying something inappropriate than it's not free. Free speech means I have a right to say what I want. It doesn't mean what I say is without consequence.
Freedom has its costs and any person with any kind of empathy or compassion would know the cost of saying whatever you want to whomever you want. As an African-American I understand that people can say whatever they want to and I would hate to live in a world where people can shout, "N***ER!" at me while I'm walking down the street and then hold up the constitution and try to convince me that it's their right as an American to mistreat and abuse me. And it saddens me that you seem like the kind of person that would stand by while others are being verbally abused and simply say, "Hey, I wouldn't want someone telling me what I can and can't say."
"You cannot make a distinction between workplace rights and freedom of speech."
Actually, the courts have already done so. There are a myriad of rules and policies in the workplace that don't apply to "real" life. he difference is, you don't have a "right" to your particular job and you agree to abide by the rules when you accept the offer of employment. Your boss can fire you if you violate the rules, but he can't have you arrested, unless you commit an actual crime.
You refer to "private/public", but that isn't accurate- define "public", would be my question. Is on your property, but in plain view of your neighbors considered "public"? I hope you can flesh that out a little more. I know that the guy can make a sandwich board with the same message and walk around in public all he wants, like Bruce Willis.
Hey, I don't want to live in that place either! There's nothing more revolting than watching some guy with a single digit IQ and the same amount of teeth, open his sewer, "smile", and let fly with "FU, N...!", but what terrifies me more than that Neanderthal is a government that can throw that same clown in jail because of what he said. I lived through a military dictatorship as a kid, and I can guarantee that it's a WHOLE lot worse than putting up with some brain-dead morons from Georgia.
"That's a whole lot worse that putting up with some brain-dead moron." I guess that's a matter of opinion. This country was a pretty scary place for African-Americans and histroy has proven if you get too many of those "brain-dead morons" who've grown very confident saying whatever hateful thing they want they often become violent.
And let me just say Germany does not allow for hate speech. Posting a sign like that would get you arrested over there. We all know what Germany's history is and it seems like they changed their laws accordingly because they have a vested interest in moving beyond their horrendous past. This country on the other hand (in my opinion) does not want to talk about racism in any meaningful way but, well die to defend someone's right to call me the n-word.
And you're right. I don't have a "right" to a job but, everyone needs one to survive in this country. If I can't say what I want at any place at any time than it's not free. I understand you're merely coming from a legal perspective. However, what I am saying is that depending on what you say, speech has a cost. If I lose my job, my speech wasn't free it cost me something. If I get punched in the nose for using a racial slur, my speech wasn't free it cost me something.
That's my point...
The discussion shouldn't be that the constitution protects my first amendment right to say what I want (it does...we know that). The discussion should be what are some of the consequences of "free" speech. Maybe if Americans talked about the consequences of saying whatever you want maybe they would think before they spoke.
"I guess that's a matter of opinion. This country was a pretty scary place for African-Americans and histroy has proven if you get too many of those "brain-dead morons" who've grown very confident saying whatever hateful thing they want they often become violent."
That's true. Thankfully, laws protect people from those actions nowadays, as opposed to the time before the Civil Rights movement. The problem, in my opinion, is that if we (like Germany) were to throw this guy in jail, what's to stop the government from making more "exceptions" later?
"The discussion shouldn't be that the constitution protects my first amendment right to say what I want (it does...we know that). The discussion should be what are some of the consequences of "free" speech. Maybe if Americans talked about the consequences of saying whatever you want maybe they would think before they spoke."
And THAT I can support wholeheartedly! What I don't support is the government forcing anyone to do so- that's where I have a problem.
The MAJORITY of Americans DO support a woman's right to have an abortion. Yet I know of NO business owner, who would post a great big pro choice sign up on their establishment without fearing that their windows would get smashed by some member of the lunatic fringe, who feels they have the RIGHT to speak, while the rest of us are to stifle it.
This guy should not only have his business boycotted, he should have the NAACP bringing a bus load of picketers to his door until the sign is GONE. Our children and communities should not have to contend with the likes of UNGODLY Phelps and those of similar stupidity.
Recently a high school student got suspended for wearing his shirt "Life without Jesus is a waste" somehow the same folks upset about that, would be the first to whine if a girl wore a "keep abortion LEGAL" shirt to school, right? Neither shirt is appropriate for a PUBLIC SCHOOL, and no there is no war on religion-- that youth is perfectly FREE to worship Jesus, he isn't free to broadcast his value judgments that are incendiary about his classmates and teachers who don't though within the halls and classrooms of the school. Is that really SO hard to comprehend?
