The Republican/Tea Party has picked up on Sen. (and some would say sore loser) John McCain's almost laughable faux outrage over President Obama's new political ad that raises questions about Mitt Romney's willingness to kill terrorist Osama bin Laden (Obama authorized the U.S. military raid in Pakistan that ended with bin Laden's death one year ago this week).
"Shame on Barack Obama,” McCain in a statement on Friday, "for diminishing the memory of Sept. 11 and the killing of Osama Bin Laden by turning it into a cheap political ad."
Watch the Obama ad:
"This is one of the reasons President Obama has become one of the most divisive presidents in American history," said former Bush aide and current Romney adviser Ed Gillespie on yesterday's NBC's Meet The Press.
"He took something that was a unifying event for all Americans – an event that Gov. Romney congratulated him and the military and the intelligence analysts in our government for completing the mission in terms of killing Osama bin Laden – and he’s managed to turn it into a divisive partisan political attack.”
So the party that uses the elephant as its symbol may have no memory, but the rest of us all remember how Republicans milked the horror of 9/11 in an attempt to paint U.S. Senator and decorated Vietnam veteran John Kerry as unfit to be commander-in-chief in 2004.
Watch the videos:
And the GOP continued to exploit 9/11 four years later, showing this video at the 2008 Republican National Convention that nominated McCain for president (and Sarah Palin for vice president. Wait, Palin was fit for vice president in '08, but Kerry wasn't fit for the presidency in '04?? OK, we'll save that for another post):
Romney said today he definitely would have ordered the U.S. military strike that killed bin Laden if he had been president.
"Of course,'" Romney told reporters after a campaign rally. "Even Jimmy Carter would have given that order."
Obama responded today:
“I just recommend that everybody take a look at people’s previous statements in terms of what they thought was appropriate to go into Pakistan and take out bin Laden,” Obama said at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
“I assume that people meant what they said when they said it. If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they would do something else, then I would go ahead and let them explain it.”
Watch the video:
But Romney is so "against politicizing 9/11" that he's planning to appear at event tomorrow with former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani here in New York.
And that announcement prompted us to make another trip down memory – to Vice President Joe Biden's classic 2007 quote that may have destroyed Giuliani's chances for national political office.
"Rudy Giuliani. There's only three things he mentions in a sentence -- a noun, a verb, and 9/11. There's nothing else! There's nothing else!" Biden said during a MSNBC presidential debate (when Biden was a senator running for the presidency):
Ed will have a lot to say about this issue tonight on The Ed Show at 8pET on MSNBC with MSNBC Political Analyst Richard Wolffe. Remember when President George W. Bush's use of Mission Accomplished?

Their outrage is so laughable, I'm outraged over gw's claims of "Mission Accomplished"

Ha,ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
I'm so sick and tired of Republican hypocrisy. When, exactly, did all of these people congratulate the President on taking out Bin Laden? I remember a lot of hurrahs, but almost NONE of them mentioned the President! It was all a backhanded type of thing, where everyone involved got credit EXCEPT the man who gave the order and decided WHICH mission and direction they took. Romney wouldn't have done anything about Bin Laden because he ADMITTED he wouldn't have been looking for him (any more than Bush was).
Liars and frauds. That's all they are.
Now that Osama is gone and no attacks....no war no taxpayer money to waste! Boo Hoo!
There are a lot of things about the purported take-out of OBL. ST-6 were in a position to take the "most valuable informant in the world" ALIVE, but they supposedly killed him; that wouldn't have been too easy, as he had already been dead for ten years. Even if he had still been alive (and undetected in an ostentatious safe-house in the middle of a high-security zone), the FBI never had any evidence connecting him with 9/11/01. But the 'body' mysteriously got "buried at sea" before ANY photos had been taken, and then all the witnesses were amazingly 'killed' in one helicopter 'crash' (a type of helicopter that should not have even been there), only to be 'resurrected' for yet another mission. So, all we end up with is a White House press release and a lot of media knees jerking. I don't believe a word of it.
thats because u dont want to believe i.t i guess if bush did it u would believe hahaha but bush did not want to be bothered with OBL he said. how terrible it must have been to hear bush say that after 3000 people died because of OBL

Don't forget Mission accomplished.......Play it again ......for OBAMA!

Iraq was a terrible mistake by GWB.....and he says he was sorry!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9QxNiKsYFg&feature=related
What did Iraq have to do with 9/11.....gw admits .....nothing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb3fesK-4S4&feature=related
And then there is dicky.....well......we were wrong.
If ever there was an "enemy of the state" it's the Republican Party!
Not only do they lie through their teeth, constantly, but have absolutely no morals, dignity of ethics whatsoever.
Had the attack on Bin Laden gone wrong, do they really want us to believe that they wouldn't be shoving up the Dems butt throughout the election campaign? Of course they would have, in a millisecond!
So, we can then surmise that the Republicans want the US to fail and the US President to FAIL so they their party can gain in the polls...??? Party before Nation....way to go...traitors!
If they were true Americans they would praise him.......
just spoiled sports.....what a proud party they are!
Yeah to bad they pride themselves as being the dumbest least informed people in the country. So much for home schooling.
EL RE: And GWB wouldn't have had anything to do with it. Or maybe Obama refused to use the good (false)information! For the reason of the failed attempt!
Whom~ If you remember, the home-schoolers got left in the dust. These guys are the Harvard elite. What snobs!! LOL
I remember when I respected Sen. (and sore loser) John McCain and thought he was a thoughtful honest man. Sadly, over time his behavior and rhetoric has become shamefully dishonest.
A sour old man who has lost his party standing, And worse yet ours! Tossed aside like a worn out shoe.
Joy, you were correct on McCain. At one time I thouy7ght that if I ever voted for a Republican it would be him. Not any more, he's just a used up old man that wiill say anything for attention.
I like how the GOP is pretending that this claim by the administration is somehow politically divisive as if they have been trying to unite the country the past three years. Gays, muslims, union members, teachers, firefighters, women's reproductive organs feel differently on this unity claim.
Or the even funnier concept that Obama can't take credit because the SEALs shot him so Bush can take credit for "mission accomplished" even though the mission wasn't accomplished and he did no trigger pulling but Obama can't.
Guess what folks by that logic then you can't blame Osama Bin Laden for 9/11 since after all he didn't fly the planes did he?
Shows a clear difference between how we always view these things in reality. The right has called this president everything from a foreigner, terrorist, dictator, appeaser of dictators, antichrist...but this is too nasty for you? Really? Cry me a #$%&!$% river
Well remember Reagan started the whole thing with his war on liberalism, then GWB and his your either with us or your a terrorist nonsense. Being the good little children they are the right followed right along without a thought in their little minds.
CC,
Excellent observations.
Thank you,
Joy
Whom~ That's doubly ironic considering Ronnie started out as a Democrat!
P.S. What's the opposite of wrinkly? Irony. I saw that on a teeshirt! Ha!
Reagan was a true whore he sought out whoever would pay him the most to be their spokesman. Remember Reagan was also head of the Screen Actors Guild Union. Reagan did whatever he could to get the biggest buck, like how he sold his principles to try to prevent Medicare for an example.
He was just a Prince, wasn't he? I wonder what his fellow actors in SAG thought about him selling out the air traffic controllers and eventually destroying their union?
George W. Bush 4487 US lives lost & trillions of dollars.........Barrack H. Obama 0 US lives lost and two bullets. Priceless.
Bingo!!!!!
The GOP has said that the President took this unifying moment and has made it into a dividing moment. I do remember that they were the first ones to say "It couldn't have been done if it hadn't been for GWBs advanced illegal interrogation techniques. Once again staking claim for what is not theirs,no surprises here!
Mission Over and Out!
Really, the republicans think for one minute we are going to stay quiet about one of President Obama's significant accomplishments???????????hahahahahahahaha!
Now - that is a belly-laugh! We will be talking about it regularly I can asure you and, all the more, because the republicans can't stand it!!
Republicans are just mad that President Obama took away the boogy-man they use to scare everyone with during election season! The republicans themselves are now the boogy-man!
The country was behind and gave President Obama credit for killing Bin Laden. The country was also behind and gave the first Bush credit for defeating Saddem Hussein and liberating Kuwait in the first gulf war. Bush however was defeated by Clinton after the economy declined. Folks have short memories when it comes to their pocket books. This election will be decided by people asking the question are they better off now than when Obama was elected.
Or so you hope but then this is not 1979 and Mittens has no hostages to make secret weapons trades for.
Nope, and this is not 2008 either. You are either better or worse off than when Obama took office. And contrary to what the radical left and right wingers believe, moderates who make up the majority of the voters in the county will decide the election. You know the average working folks in this country who don't listen to a word of the moronic BS that MSNBC and FOX spout.
Who said it was 2008? I base my information on what the GOP have managed to do since 2010.
LOL yeah, Obama isn't a glory grabber at all on this one.
He did this all by himself with intelligence gathered over the course of the last three years of his administration, starting at zero did he?
Dream on.
Yeah he gets credit for making it happen on his watch, but it would have happened anyway regardless. It just took this long for the intelligence to catch up.
Keep it real.
With the exception of getting Bin Laden last year, I submit that neither party has accomplished much of anything for the past two years, that is except point their fingers at each other for various problems.
Neither party has worked together to address the out of control deficits and debt. And it is out of control. 4+ trillion dollars under Bush and 5+ trillion dollars under Obama is just madness. Obama took the right approach in establishing the bi-partisan commission to come up with recommendations. But when the commission didn't come back with the recommendations he wanted, he in effect ignored them. And instead of having the OMB work with the Congressional Budget committees to find common ground all you have is the same old bi-partisan bickering.
I can tell you first hand that I have worked for administrations including Reagan and Clinton where there was good cooperation between the Executive and Legislative branches when one was Democratic and the other Republican. Each certainly had their own agenda, but there was reasoned compromise and the country was better off for it. Unfortunately, beginning with Bush's second term and continuing with Obama there has been no such cooperation. You can blame Republicans and others will blame Democrats but the truth is both are equally to blame. I honestly try to listen to both sides but I don't see either being better. It always ends up in a blame game with no positive solutions offerred.
The one thing I know for sure is that the spiraling deficits and debt this country is accumulating is a time bomb that is waiting to expolde. I don't want this country to end up like Greece but that is where we are heading very soon if we don't get this under control. And what is really troubling is that I don't have confidence that either Obama or Romney have a plan to fix it. I'd like to see Bill Clinton back as Pres and Newt Gingrich back as SOH and have them work together to get our fiscal house back in order. As different in political ideologies as those two were, they somehow found a way to work together for the good of the country and balanced the budget as well.
Clearly neither of them do have a plan, and yes it's very troubling indeed.
Seat up for re-election We have more up and they have more money. What do say?

Dirty tricks started the very day Obama took office!
Oh, and let us NOT forget that we now have proof that they "planned" within the first few hours the President was in office to get him out.
It's one thing to be upset and a sore loser about what they "woulda, coulda, shoulda done" and have a pity party to drown their sorrows. Fine, we understand that. Sour grapes.
However, it's a whole 'nother thing entirely to come up with an idiotic (not to mention, treasonous) plan to sink the presidency through obstruction, then implement that plan to the detriment of America and the American people.
Are you kidding me?! You're willing to destroy America just to soothe your uber-manical, bruised egos? If that's the case, public service is not where your "skill-set and talents" is best served.
Each person involved in "The Plan" should be charged with treason and, We, the American people should be reimbursed for each and every dollar their obstruction "plan" cost us; including staff time, equipment used, supplies, etc., etc., etc. to launch this diabolical scheme.
Additionally, they should be stripped of their offices immediately, as well as any, and all health care, pension benefits, perks, etc. received - retroactive to that night.
If it could be proven that the Republican leadership approved of these plans then they should be tried for treason. They were willing to distroy America because we had the nerve to elect a black man for President. Now if the voters won't forget what happened between 2000 and 2006 we just might be able to destroy the Republican party.
They (republican) are so JEOLOUS that Obama got bin laden .they can stand it!!
The only foreign experience Mitt Romney has is running to France during the Vietnam War, and sending American jobs and his money his money overseas.
I love the Ed show!! Everytime he opens his mouth he reconfirms to everyone why his show, Chris Matthews and Lawrence O Donnell are the bottom feeders of the cable news industry.
Then there is the reality that Rupert Murdoch pays for people to watch his news channels. Gee that is real honesty right there huh blind one.
@usba - Why are you commenting on here if you don't watch Ed's show? It's clear that when you right-wingers are looking for real news, facts and thoughtful analysis of the news, you turn to MSNBC and other left-wing media.
Love the Ed Show, everytime he, Chris Matthews, and Lawrence ODonnell open their mouth they reconfirm their standing as the bottom feeders of the cable news industry.
Obama was against the war, against the surge, against the interrogation tactics and against GITMO, but is now solely responsible for the death of Bin Laden, RIGHT. I think this would be one time blaming Bush would be appropriate. Bush implemented every thing responsible for Bin Laden's death, give credit where credit is due.
Except the wars did not get him....as I recall that woas the first reason of many for them
The surge did not get him
According the the sec of defense the black sites didn't get him either see what really happend was a CIA collaborator working in pakistan doing a vaccine program...so at best they found out he was in the middle east which seems to be well...how should I say blatantly obvious.
It happend during this administration's tenure that means under the general rules of campaigning that this administration is going to take credit for it when the other side accuses it of being terrorists.
Cynical, the US Military and Intelligence Community set up and funded by the Bush Administration got him, Not Obama. Obama has cut both programs and if he had not left the Bush programs in place he would not have been killed.
C.I.A. Closes Unit Focused on Capture of bin Laden
By MARK MAZZETTI
Published: July 4, 2006
WASHINGTON, July 3 — The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.
The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.
The decision is a milestone for the agency, which formed the unit before Osama bin Laden became a household name and bolstered its ranks after the Sept. 11 attacks, when President Bush pledged to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice "dead or alive."
-----
Mr. Scheuer said that view was mistaken.
"This will clearly denigrate our operations against Al Qaeda," he said. "These days at the agency, bin Laden and Al Qaeda appear to be treated merely as first among equals."
In recent years, the war in Iraq has stretched the resources of the intelligence agencies and the Pentagon, generating new priorities for American officials. For instance, much of the military's counterterrorism units, like the Army's Delta Force, had been redirected from the hunt for Mr. bin Laden to the search for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed last month in Iraq.
Wrong 2ez, notice the date of this article.
Uhhh....Bush created the military intelligence community? Hmmm....no that was there long before he showed up.
He cut them which is advisable considering the massive level of defense spending and our money crisis. We do not keep up levels of defense spending ofr decades this is a temporary, should be temporary but not if the GOP has its uninformed way, for a war. You don't keep this level forever. FYI one of the problems cited by the 9-11 commission as for why the incident was able to happen as well as major potential problems with military and civilian intelligence services is that when they are allowed to get so large they can't adequately communicate with one another. So growing them at this point makes us less safe not more safe.
Fact is the tactics used by Bush did not contribute significantly it was good ole fashioned, not torture, spy work that got it.
That's like saying George Washington won the war of 1812 because he helped create America and America won so he really was the one who won that war......
John, Simple question for you. What new program that did not exist under Bush did Obama implement that resulted in the death of BL?
There was no 'new' program 2ez. Bush closed the CIA unit, the President ordered it back in service to hunt down OBL, simple as that. Mission accomplished.
Indeed I think if anyone reads the statements and material about the events leading up to or after the raid it becomes clear that nothing GW did was significant enough to claim he deserves the credit
The information came from the CIA unit Bush killed. Within a matter of months they have found his general location. Had we not had a doctor working with us in pakistan we could not have done that raid.
The only thing the far right righties can do is try to bring down one of obama's signature accomplishments because they can not cite any positive thing they have been a part of on foreign policy. The GOP has no successes on national defense to run on without have to go and talk about GW which even republicans hate to do
Which programs did GW start that Obama cut that lead to finding Bin Laden?
Fact is the GOP has screwed up the middle east for decades starting around Reagan and the soviet afghan war where we armed the rebels against russia....these rebels included Bin Laden and became Al Qaeda and the Taliban.....no one could have know at the time but never the less the effect still negative
GH let saddam stay in power even when we were in striking distance, we had ample oppurtunity to take him out decades ago
GW screwed the two wars and got nothing done on iran which particularly bad since we now have no way to shut the program down save for all out war. It's too late to stop them for good and it's beal too late for some time even before obama took office
and lets not forget the strategy of appeasing dictators which is the GOP's plan except that most don't know it since they know little to nothing on the cultural climate of the middle east. They said we should have stood by Mubarak who was always a tyrant and yet until recently always could count on our support. They said the arab spring was dangerous and said we should have felt sorry for the dictators deposed during it since "islamistswere taking over the middle east"....news flash if you know anything about the governments there you will see that saying islamists are taking over is like saying republicans are taking over fox news. Saudi Arabia is one of if not the most westernized nation, they are considered rather forward thinking approach because they are out friends.
People Saudi Arabia is ruled by a king and his family, hell the entire nation is named for the royal family....talk about vapid.......so vane. The word king in this case is not like Japan, Britain, Italy or where ever, the king is in charge of everything like in the feudal era. The monarchy has absolute power.
Women can't go outside there, speak, drive ro really do most things without being accompanied by a man or else they can be beaten
non muslims face state sponsored persecution as do gays and other groups....
does that sound like a nation that reflects our american ideals and values and thus is a valid and strong friend? Does this sound like a country we should even want to be friends with...?
the gop still thinks so
the republicans along with arianna of huff post are a bunch despicable fools for criticizing president Obama for doing his job and should apologize to the potus and the american people
The people of this country and around the world know who is FOR us. Pres O knows what it's like not to have everything handed to you. He actually WORKED his way to the top! He is the one who is in touch with the American people!
Obama/Biden - 4 more years!
Pres O actually TELLS the people what he WILL do. Mitt Romney only tells what he WILL DO behind closed doors. Secrets??????
Obama/Biden - 4 more years!
yes thats riight, you cant trust mitt he is sneaky, and an idiot!!!!
Ed,
Sorry to have to point out yet another one of your errors, but it was OSAMA BIN LADEN who said electing Kerry in 2004 would weaken the US, and leave them open to attack.
On 2012, Romney has executive experience. The President must be an effective executive to even have a chance at being an effective President. Obama is a mix of legislator & professor. 9 times out of 10 Obama will form a blue ribbon committee rather than take decisive action. Hell, it took Obama 26 weeks to decide to take out bin Laden! I also find it hilarious that you question Romney's experience... Not everyone can have the vast experience of being a leftist agitator and an up-jumped Illinois state senator. Haha. Keep on trying to find something Obama has done successfully, surely there must be SOMETHING he's not ruined with his reverse Midas touch.
I still haven't found anyone who didn't vote for Little Barry in '08 who plans to vote for him in '12. I've met A LOT who did vote for him in '08 but would vote for a stray cat rather than vote for him in '12. Uh oh!
Right and then there is reality that NO one will vote for Mittens including tea bagging republicans.
No whom you are wrong Mitt Romney is always right...it's one of the perks of always being on all sides(left, right, diagonal, middle) of each issue
mitt likes to put his money on all the horses....luckily he's got so much of its so he gets away with it
The right can not stand that GM is alive because of Obama and Bin Laden is not. They hate that they have no national security acheivements that they can run on and they're economic policy is one which is looking backward. The only policies they have are the ones of GW, the favor the wealthy over the middle class majority and deregulate so that when the shifting dealsers bring down the system the fraud will be legal....because that's always our first concern in a big recessionary climate. Britain and Spain and their conservative parties have pushed their respective economies back into recession.
Governor Romney's record in and out of the private sector reflects one of no job creation, Romney has profited from job negatation not job creation. He's wrong for the nation......or maybe not hard to tell what that guy is thinking he never seems to be sincere.......
Even Arianna Huffigton of the Huffington Post is outraged by that ad. She called it "despicable" in an interview with CBS. It looks like she is now recalling that she used to be a republican. Where was here outrage when Dick Cheney said at a town hall meeting during their 2004 campaign that "we would be attacked if John Kerry was elected POTUS"? How about the G.W. Bush "Mission accomplished banner"? She probably would have preferred that President Obama, in that ad, had given credit to Mitt Romoney. Just as the latter has been recently claiming credit to every accomplishment this president has made.
Mitt Romoney is desperate. He feels that he will be soundly defeated in the election of November the 6th.
