Can we just FIX THIS?? How about student loans do not accrue interest until Graduation or 6 months after leaving school? How about maximum interest pegged to Prime plus 2% or better, 1%, How about a year of in State Tuition Equivalent for each year served in Military and/or the Peace Corps. How about one semester of tuition for each year of service comittment in a poor or economically depressed (as defined by Census or HUD or other certifiable data - even State data) And How about the Buffet Rule? I am a disabled Veteran of service in the Marine Corps - and have benefitted from the ability to get an education and work up to a 6 figure income....Why cant we remove the Cap on SSI income and apply the results to save Medicare - and Veteran's Pensions?? Please - not one person who has not served should be allowed to vote on that!!

Why don't we discuss how they are fooling the youth as well as the public (both parties). The real education issues are why does the cost of a college education increase by 4 - 6% per year (up 24% in just the past 5 years), why do teachers only get roughly 26% of the total money allocated for education, top five degrees issued do not include any engineering or science based degrees and that there are no manufacturing jobs for those who can't afford a college education.

Privatize or not, make it free or not, all twisting the truth that these universities have become money making machines that educate our children in business, psychology, sociology, nursing and visual/performing arts (top five). Higher education is essential for our economy.

The first thing Pres. Obama did after the election was to fix the federal student loan program by "firing" the banks that were interfering with education.

A bachelors degree boosts income by about $1 million over a lifetime, which increases tax revenue by about $250,000.

That is called profit - as in "return on investment".

Funding for "free" college tuition up to bachelors should be provided for low-cost state college tuition.

Loans should only be required for the lodging and for more expensive schools, and those loans should run at the "federal fund rate" (about 0.5% per year right now).

Education should otherwise be as inexpensive as possible to boost economic growth.

Been saying many of the same things but people are so partisan that they refuse to hear. All for removing the SSI cap but at the same time reducing the payments by lower incomes at the same time. Also for funding Medicare with Tarriffs and Import Taxes (last year $2.2 Trillion in Imports only recieved $33 Billion in revenue, FLAT 10% would fund Medicare). Not sure anyone hear will listen, keep it up making a lot of sense. All but that Buffet rule stuff. Ever think that maybe the student loans wouldn't be so burdensome if the cost of higher education wasn't so much?

Last time I checked, we don't live in India.

There is a shortage of doctors, health technologists, engineers, computer scientists, and information technologists in the US. Unemployment for those fields is under 1% at any level of education.

While there is not as much of a shortage in other fields, the unemployment rate for anyone with a bachelors degree is about 4%.

Higher education still equals less unemployment and higher income in the US.

Sorry but do we really think that everyone is going to have a degree? Is that the goal? I really don't see an issue with the trades and manufacturing. Used to a source of middle income for a vast number of our parents and grandparents. By the way, my father was a welder by trade and I have my doctorate. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for that old man who never finished high school. My point is that we fill young minds with dreams of vast riches and frankly I got my first degree in toxicology and never made a dime using it. You set expectations like the ones we keep hearing and soon young people end up with no hope. My first job with my degree was sweeping floors in a manufacturing warehouse and I was happy to have it. You see, a college educated individual can simply do the math, right. Management positions in any company range between 15 - 25%. College graduates currently are just below 20% (have to check current but last I looked). Now how high does the percentage of college graduates go before they end up sweeping the floor. Young man, take it from a pharmacologist (Dr. Bill), I've been a paratrooper, welder, machinist, common labor and the like, believe me none of those jobs are here any more to fall back on while someone works thier way to an advanced degree and there won't be any need for the advanced degree if we don't start respecting the middle class and making their role in our society Honorable again.

It's funny... as a young woman there were many times when I didn't have a job which offered me health insurance, like when I was working as a substitute teacher, or tutoring in homeless and women's shelters. But I wasn't aware of the health services that Planned Parenthood offered, so I paid for medical care out of my own pocket when I needed it.

Now with the GOP's attacks on Planned Parenthood and the coverage of their services here on MSNBC, I've been able to make use of their services for some much needed health screenings. So even middle aged and older women, in addition to young women, have use of this important program.

@ DSCully, I think there are many like you may not know services provided. I am glad you got your health care. Women's heath care is so important. we are so complex with many issues. Romney and his cronies would throw us under a tank if he can get away with it. This is the most important election we will ever vote in and they damn well know it ! That's why there is a push for voter suppression. They are thieves, crooks, robber barons and a disgrace to the people of the USA!
