Conservative group ALEC backs off legislation dealing with social issues, but it still has its hooks in legislation all around the country. The executive director of Color of Change, Rashad Robinson, joins Ed Schultz to discuss the small victory, and what else needs to be done to stop ALEC's influence (Apr. 17, 2012).
Not a good day for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
Another big brand dumped the shadowy right-wing front group that's behind state legislation that promotes voter suppression and "stand your ground" gun laws.
Procter & Gamble will not rejoin ALEC this year, according to a statement issued today by Color Of Change, which had already convinced a dozen other corporations to pull out funding, including Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods.
And now ALEC also has a problem with the IRS.
Common Cause is challenging the tax-law status of ALEC as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charity, which lets ALEC avoid paying taxes and lets its supporters deduct their contributions.
The group's complaint to the Internal Revenue Service asserts that ALEC violates the tax rules that prohibit charitable organizations from engaging in a substantial amount of lobbying.
"Anybody looking at these materials knows that's a joke, and the IRS is not likely to find it humorous,'' said Common Cause lawyer Eric Havian.
ALEC called the complaint frivolous and false.

I hope the IRS will go after ALEC. We will have to wait to see if this really true.
Can anyone explain to me what the issue here is? I have been listen for a while and can't seem to reconcile the differences between PETA funds, a Union's dues, and these super packs. Not trying to be negative or debate just know there has to be a distinquishing feature that I am missing?
I've been hoping people would wake up and see ALEC for what it is for a long time. I hope this is the beginning of the end for ALEC.

More newspapers and shows like MSNBC's need to be talking about ALEC everyday and exposing each dirty, little secret, until the majority of the people in this country are aware of what they're doing. All the newsmagazine shows like 20/20, Dateline, Meet the Press, need to yell from the rooftops how ALEC is subverting this country. And newspapers in every state need to publish articles about them.

The IRS should remove their non-profit status, then make them pay back taxes on every year they participated in lobbying activities.
What we need is a list of all the corporations and there products so that can boycott them.

Try to use the USPS instead of fedex and UPS. Fedex and UPS are ALEC supporters.
ALEC is as diversified as the KOCH brothers. They are into toilet paper as well as for oil. I have stopped using so many products I have noticed I do not need much. But now I am glad Coke left them. I love coca cola classic.
Any corporation, politician, or individual that claimed their contributions to ALEC as donations when filing their income tax should also have to pay taxes on those donations
