Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey announced George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.
BREAKING — Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman is being charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager whose death ignited nationwide protests.
Special prosecutor Angela Corey says that the 28-year-old Zimmerman is in custody, but wouldn't disclose Zimmerman's whereabouts for his safety. He is expected in court within 24 hours.
"We did not come to this decision lightly," Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to re-examine the case, said at a news conference in Jacksonville, Fla.
"We just wanted an arrest, and we got it, and I say thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus," said Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Second-degree murder is typically charged when there is a fight or other confrontation that results in death and where there is no premeditated plan to kill someone.
Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Peruvian, has asserted since the Feb. 26 killing in Sanford that he shot the 17-year-old Martin in self-defense after the two fought. Police questioned Zimmerman but decided against pressing charges.

zimm turning himself in assures he will get bail as hes not a flight risk. he was under no order to stay in the state or even stay in the country. he could have fled to a country with no extradition. he will probably be out by this time tomorrow. this should have gone to a grand jury. with the racial divide in this case having 1 black woman decide to prosecute instead of a mixed raced grand jury decide is suspect. as the black panthers have a bounty out on zimm dead or alive its obvious he will have to stay in hiding through out the trial. kinda weird she never asked the black panthers to cease and desist their call for violence. i imagine its a crime to go on tv and offer money for the death of a person. eric holder is his commentts today refused to bring this up also. in my opinion there will never be a verdict in this case. with nbc admitting to editing the tape the person that was fired can be called to testify by the defense why he or she tried to portray zimm as a racist. unless the whole jury is black zimm will never be convicted.

But the decision was Georges to pull the trigger! I am so proud I signed his parents petition and day after day we kept this in social media. Now we must get behind getting this Stand Your Ground Law Repealed ! We can do this !

How much more evidence did they need at the beginning? He should have been held in custody immediately, if only for his own safety. Took 'way too long to get to this decision. May come as a shock, but there are more murders now than there ever were when everyone carried a gun. An armed society is a polite society, hot heads would get shot unless they are the only ones with guns. Chicago has no need for a SYG law, as they only let cops have guns, and they won't get prosecuted anyways.
One good thing the law does is let you keep your house when you shoot the robbers who break in. They can't then sue you for their injuries.

The real tragedy here is not that a gun was used to kill Trayvon, but that possession of that gun emboldened George Zimmerman to confront Trayvon in the first place. Had Zimmerman been a typical Neighborhood Watch member with a flashlight and cell phone, we wouldn't be talking about this today.
So the legal system worked. An investigation was done, facts were gathered and a decision to charge Zimmerman was made by the DA. A trial will be held and a jury of his peers will decide his fate based on the facts and evidence presented. Just like it has for thousands of other criminal cases. Now Eric Holder and the Dept of Justice needs to issue an indictment for the New Black Panther individuals who issued the dead or alive bounty on Zimmerman. It will be interesting to see if that part of our legal system works as it is suppossed to as well.

The rare cases of home break ins are done for other reasons then taking valuables and that the media over plays them don't you. Like FDR said "you have nothing to fear but fear itself" arming yourself is not going to stop you from being a victim of a crime and more then likely you will end up being a victim of your own gun because if you get caught off guard a criminal can get the jump on you thus you gave them a weapon to use against you. In fact the best way of protecting yourself from crime is being aware of what is around you so you aren't caught off guard.

Yep PS the best defense is not getting yourself into dangerous situations by letting your guard down. Martin was practicing that when he was walking and looking around even though he was on his home turf, he just ran into a wannabe cop out searching for trouble, so even if Martin had been walking with his head down staring at his feet Zimmerman would have seen that as suspicious, after all no one walks in the rain after dark right. BTW one thing that confuses me is how Zimmerman thinks he could say Martin was high on drugs in the rain and dark, that showed he was searching for a reason to confront Martin from the start. That is called intent which I got a feeling is why the DA went for 2nd degree murder, Zimmerman showed intent and he then forced a confrontation with Martin which resulted in death.
