MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell weighs in on Rep. Allen West's "Communist" comments.
Sarah Palin's favorite choice for a vice presidential running mate in 2012, Rep. Allen West of Florida, apparently thinks it's time for another good old fashioned Red Scare.
A constituent asked West yesterday at a town hall in Jensen Beach, Florida, how many members of the House are "card-carrying Marxists." Evoking the ghost of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, West said he believes 78 to 81 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party. He provided no names.
In a statement today, West's office said he was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, an internal group of the most left-leaning members of House Democrats. Current and past members have included Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Barney Frank, civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, and many others.
West's office cited a May 2010 article that appeared in the Communist Party USA pre-convention publication that referred to caucus members as allies. The article, however, carried the disclaimer that the party took no responsibility for the piece's opinions.
Just eight days ago, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, announced that she thinks the eventual GOP nominee should go "rogue" and tap U.S. Rep. Allen West for the No. 2 position.
"I love that he has that military experience" Palin told Fox News' Sean Hannity on April 3. "He is a public servant willing to serve for the right reasons. He understands the Constitution. He understands our national foreign policy issues that must be addressed. He has served. I really like him,” she said.
Six days later, on April 9, former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain joined the "West for VP" bandwagon.
"Col. Allen West is a dedicated patriot, he served in the military and he’s willing to serve his country some more,” Cain said on the Steve Gill Show.
As noted before on this blog, West was fined and essentially forced to retire from the military (thereby avoiding a court martial) after he was accused of using improper methods to force information out of an Iraqi detainee.
And since entering Congress in 2011 as a Tea Party star, he's best known for making a series of outrageous comments. So many outrageous comments, in fact, that our friends at Think Progress made a list of his 15 most outrageous in February (I guess it's time to update that list!).
One of our least favorite on the list was when West played the Nazi card in December 2011, saying that Hitler's propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels would be "very proud" of Democrats:

From my 35+ years as a budget analyst I have seen first hand the tremendous waste of our tax dollars in the hands of the Federal Government. And I can tell you that collecting more taxes from rich people ain't gonna solve our budget crisis. The $40 or so billion dollars that would be collected with the Buffet rule idea over 10 years is a drop in the proverbial bucket when you have $1.3 trillion dollar annual deficits. What is needed is what occured during the Clinton era when he worked TOGETHER with the Republican Congress to get our fiscal house in order. Unfortunately both Obama and Ryan are so ideologically rigid, compromise is unlikely. Both the President and Congress should revisit what worked during the Clinton era and use that as a starting point for getting things moving. With the wars winding down now these out of control deficits can be fixed. And the answer is not to just keep blaming each other or Bush. The time for that political bs is past. The American people deserve better from both.

Yes but what you're describing is a democracy. This country was founded as a republic. Those who say America is a Democracy are exactly right, It is now, but it's not supposed to be.
A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution).
A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority.
A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good).
That may be your position but if you look at some of the other posts here, there are some who don't share this sentiment at all.
I think we can all agree that corporatism has destroyed our government and continues to undermine liberty. I don't know anyone on either side that would disagree with that.
One could argue however that while the GOP overtly supports the lobbying corporations in Washington, the DNC supports exactly those same corporate interests.
What's really unfortunate about the whole political system is that you have to come from a privileged background and have a lot of financial backing to become president or even have a shot at serving in the senate or congress. This is undoubtedly because Washington is controlled by corporations who know that someone who is not wealthy or influential probably wouldn't serve their interests.
It's disturbing to know that somewhere out there there's someone who comes from modest means that has real answers and could take a huge stride in straightening out this mess we're in, but they never will have a chance to make a difference because of their background.

Every period of economic decline corresponds with population decline.
These are as follows.
Illegal immigrants contribute about $200 billion in GSP across the entire US right now. That consumer demand employs about 10 million US residents.
Three important events occur from 2000 to 2006 during the Bush presidency.
These regulatory changes cause real estate prices and stock prices to skyrocket as investors borrow as much money as is possible. This is intended to restore economic losses that followed the attack of September 11, 2001.

Immigration departing the US accounts for a drop of about 1.6% in the population in less than 2 years.
Each US resident creates consumer demand for real estate, vehicles, food, and consumer goods, and that consumer demand includes illegal immigrants.
The illegal immigrant population of Arizona produced $42 billion in GSP during 2008, and immigrant population decline is one of the underlying causes for economic collapse in the American south and west (Immigration Policy Center, 2011).
Birth nearly equals mortality during this period, so this population change is entirely due to migration that contributes the following to the US economy.
The following shows how migration contributed to part of the decline in US real estate values, which collapses real estate value in the American south and west.

Banks issue margin calls for stock market investments to cover lending losses in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy.

This chain of events halts the startup of new businesses, at the same time that millions of jobs are lost in manufacturing, real estate, construction, finance, and investment.
Departure of 5 million immigrants raised unemployment by about 4 million from 2007 to 2009.
A return of 2.6 million immigrants reduced unemployment by about 2 million from 2009 to 2011.

We don't have a real population decline happening. We just don't need as many people to do all the things/jobs of today that we needed 50 years ago. Like the big farm families I was a part of. Also the price of real estate is through the roof so most of it isn't worth dieing for. That real estate pricing was caused by the banks and lenders (greedy bastards) in the 80's with their double digit interest rates, and those buyers from the 80's are trying to recoup that money by jacking up the prices of those homes and properties. What really needs to happen is to lower the cost of living verses raise everyone's pay. Investments in real alternative energy and fuels needs to happen today. The auto makers need to get on that band wagon too. To lower oil prices in the mean time we need to nationalize all our oil, gas and coal. And stop the export of those fuels/resources. Don't mine the coal for export. Very few of us profit from it's sales and we don't have an endless supply of it. Hold the rest of it in reserve. West is just another paid Uncle Tom like Cain is. That is the only reason he got elected in the racist state of Fla. If you take in the whole story on Martin and Zimmerman you will see that it was Mr martin that was truly standing his ground in self defense just walking back home from the store and Zimmerman was the aggressor with a gun. He was stalking Mr. Martin and Mr Martin defended himself with whatever means he had. The recorded call to the police by Zimmerman proved that he was in the wrong and was the aggressor. This makes this a clear cut case of first degree murder not a lessor charge of man slaughter, or self defense on Zimmerman's part. The lack of any immediate prosecution by the state officials is clear cut racism on their part because it was the white guy with the gun and was in the wrong the evidence shows that. By the way folks, I am a white baby boomer born and raised in the bible belt who had lived for 14+ years in Fla while in the military, I know just how racist many of the state officials are there. If the races were switched in this case the black guy would have been locked up already or shot at the scene of the crime. I believe that there was one cop the initial investigator of the this that did want to arrest Mr Zimmerman that night, and it was the white "state official" that said not to do so. Why was a "state level" official on the scene so fast that late at night? As I had said before if the races were switched the state officials wouldn't have been called in the first place, and the black Zimmerman would be serving time for murder or be on death row already. By the way all you white folks, Jesus wasn't white. It is only the pictures in your bibles printed by racist fools that make you assume so.
