Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum announces that he is suspending his presidential campaign. Watch his entire statement.
BREAKING — Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum suspended his campaign today, clearing Mitt Romney’s path to the Republican presidential nomination.
Santorum’s decision to suspend his campaign effectively stifles the opposition to Romney from within the GOP; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul remain active candidates, though neither of them have a plausible path to winning the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
The decision comes two weeks before the Pennsylvania presidential primary. Santorum had faced the prospect of an embarrassing loss to Romney that threatened to short-circuit any of his future political aspirations, either statewide or nationally.
Ed will have full analysis and reaction tonight on The Ed Show at 8pET on MSNBC!

Santourm "I am leaving the race to spend more time with my family" Boiler Plate cop out, Nothing to see here keep it moving
hey, we all know what's goin' on.
what else is he gonna say?
He finally discovered no one was interested in him....they didn't want him....they were just using him to prop up the Willard.....Now Willard stands alone.....watch him crumble.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM9DVC7kd7s
He is already being debated by Obama and he does not even realize it. As long as mitt tries to put Obama down, he leaves himself wide open for the debunk.
Bye-Bye-Nutcase = Go Join Cain In His Pizza Shop !!!!!!
Hey Rick, although you seem to think that you were "chosen," you weren't...And don't let the door hit you in the kiesta!
Has Anyone Else Noticed Those Life-sized BOBBLE-HEADS Behind Him !!???? Just Sayin' !!!
All I can say is "It's about time!"
Who's this Rick Santorum??? Ha Ha Ha! Like he stood a chance against the Mitt MONEY MACHINE! Duh!
Maybe he will pick McCain as his veep! What ever he will change his mind anyway!
We have already forgotten his name. Just can't shake his weired thinking.
has leroy left the room yet? It is so quiet! Did anyone notice?
Willard will need a veep with a spine. Oh wait, there aren't any.
He was a man who was principled and had traditional moral values something you on the left have forgotten or more accurately never had to begin with
Right because republicans are so well known for their morals, but those morals don't apply to them. The ones who have no morals are the republicans, they sold morals out to the highest bidder a long long time ago.
Max...
He was also a man who was going to force his principles and moral values down our throats, whether we choked on them or not...
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely...
You claim he wanted smaller government... He wanted government that policed your womb, your sex life, your religion, your thoughts...
Good riddance to bad rubbish...
If there was no other choice than a Republican President, I would rather have one whose ideas are on sale to the highest bidder, than one who believes his ideas are ordained by God, to be imposed on the Infidels beneath his notice..
Or maybe people didn't like how his plan was going to raise our taxes. Before you try to deflect with some budget comment about anyone or anything other than Rick Santorum's tax plan look it up he was going to raise middle class taxes.
Perhaps people didn't think him because he is a dominionist theocrat. He believes the power of the federal government should be used to enforce a select form of religious morality. The constitution establishes no christian nation. FACT.
Perhaps it was because he would reinstate don't ask don't tell while not actually making any case for how it would help the military. More than likely becuase it would.
Perhaps it was because he calls himself a constitutionalist while wanting a theocracy and celebrating the patriot. Leading Ron Paul to call him a phony.
Perhaps it was because he's trieed to claim he is all for cutting spendin when his congressional career was filled with tremendous pork spending
Perhaps it was because Santorum's tax plan was the worst of all the republican plans because it grew the deficit more than any other candidate's plan by slashing the hell out of revenue
Perhaps it was his "I don't want to make blah...chuckle.....americans lives better by giving them other people's money"...many blah americans might not appreciate him projecting the stereotype that because they are blah americans they are lazy and needy
Perhaps it was his claim that he didn't hear the booing of the deployed gay soldier in that infamous debate despite the fact that the background sound equipment clearly did..........many believe that his not hearing it was unlikely
Perhaps it was the instance where a delusional birther woman decided to ask him why they didn't arrest and deport obama because he had "no right to be president" the usual semi-racist birther distractionary none sense and Santorum decided not to denounce when he clearly had the oppurtunity
Perhaps it was because he was running as a social issues "jesus candidate" despite the fact that the tea party GOP which Santorum swears fealty to says it is not about social issues. Poll after poll shows people want focus on the economy not culture war.
Perhaps it was becuase Santorum continually all by himself brought up social issues on the campaign trail and then refused to elaborate on the positions he was making. Many are not fond of the how dare you ask me about things I continually talk about unprovocked while running for president routine.
To me Rick Santorun reminded me of a Jim Jones type of person. It was only going to be matter of time before he ask his followers to drink the Kool-Aid. The speeches he gave were so out there you wondered why there were so many people believing what he was saying. Then he started the Gingrich bit blaming everything on the media but he was always in front of the media. WOW!!! One more gone.
i agree with you, gladys.
And I agree with you, suzette.
Gladys remember a couple things about the far right namely that in the pursuit of purity they engage in a sort of incestuous intellectual practice of excluding all other interpretations and forms of thought that are not exclusively conservative. This is much like the ancient practice amongst blue bloods of only marrying within the royal families because to marry any others polluted the bloodline. To the far right listening or considering any non conservative position pollutes the ideological bloodline if you will.
Next keep in mind that they also only consider those who agree with them "true americans"........I'm sure you've heard that insidious phrase. So this is why the far right continually claims that America agree with them on foreign policy and taxes when the polls clearly show not all republicans agree with their positions let alone the whole country...........they think all of america agrees with them because the only people who are american are people who already agree with them in their minds
which of course brings up the notion that at any given period at least 60% of the population doesn't agree with them so that would mean the majority of americans aren't true americans.......don't know that works out
bad news for obama. he wanted rick to stay in as long as possible. this means more money for romney. karl rove is about to unleash 300million$ on attack ads on obama.as obama now has super pacs its foolish of him to complain about money in politics. obama and buffet say its bad for america that they dont pay more in taxes yet they refuse to pay more by writing a check? so they are knowingly doing something thats bad for america by refusing to write checks. lol they say they wont do something they think is good for america, unless everyone has to do it? are they in 3rd grade? i remember telling my kids to clean their rooms, they said some of the other kids they know dont have to clean their rooms thats the same premise obama and buffet are using. .
Then you admit that the top earners paying more as it was under clinton and numerous other presidents is logical based on your attack on the character of the people not the principle
There is something to be said for what a man really believes in his heart. But he also realizes what he is constitutinally bound to do, once again something the current guy doesn't do.
Go Fish !!!!!!!
Rick Santorum said he was proud to vote for the patriot act what the hell kind of constitutionalist does that?
There is one and only one constitutionalist candidate in the pool of GOP candidates and that is Ron Paul. He alone is consistent in his constitutional positions. Santorum is a tow the line bush era republican trying to rebrand himself has a die hard theocrat.
maxstr1--that is your opinion. Rick was not President Material, his kid is sick, give him a break, like he gave Obama one. BYE BYE Rick don't let the door hit your rear.
I'm glad he's out, but he WAS driving all sensible women and men toward Obama. Now if everyone just remembers all the rotten crud the Reps have been slinging when Nov gets here, it will assure Obama another four years. Go Big O!!
Oh, they'll remember...remember it's early.
Mr Bush is in the news again, tax cuts for the rich lets the Job Producers makes jobs. But the ONLY question is WHERE on Earth are they??? Republicans haven't produced ONE yet, nor have they come up with a solid plan for making one??? Thanks Mr Bush, now go back to your ranch and sleep some more. I wonder if he knows about Cheney having a heart after all???
Just proves that the GOP today although claiming they are nothing like GW support his same policies
