While I agree with your conclusion Sarah I would just say that the term "sanctity" is not quite to be focused on. It is their version of slag you might say, it's more of an expression. The way this interacts with freedom of religion is just that. It interferes with freedom of religion by establishing a religious(abrahamic only) tenent. This is because there are many who do not believe gay marriage is evil, it does not violate their religious conscience. These individuals should have the right to hold ceremony or ritual(wedding, marriage status) which this would include so to forbid them from legally doing so gives other religious view points a higher priority. This is unconstitutional.

It's like this in my opinion. Let's use an example, follow with here...just imagine it.

• Say you have a break room at your work(your crappy job because congress won't do anything to help the economy) and in this room there is a punch dispensor and a water cooler.
• Now the water cooler has been there since the beginning of the business.....the punch was always there too it's just now getting its own machine.
• So you have many who think that don't think punch is good for your health or business and so they demand the punch machine be stopped. They believe it is not an acceptable beverage. Problem is there are people who want the punch over water.
• By taking away the punch bowl the water only folks are taking away the opportunity of others to pursue their beverage happiness

Now on religious people I would ask you to reconsider your view a little. I think it is unwise to count off religion as a purely negative force. There are and have always been pious people practicing their faith by promoting charity. Think Mother Theresa. I think that you are sort of channeling your disdain for dominionists and "christian traditional values" supporters. However that is a trap by the right to make seem like they represent mainstream spiritual views. All the rebranding of the word "religion" is a ploy since we know they only care xtianity

as long as the term "civil union" is used in palce of the word "marriage" for gays, civil unions and marriages will never be equal under the law.

why do we think that everyone should apply "god's law", when each person might interpret what god wants for them differently? if it is personally important for you to interpret the law as YOU THINK god interprets the law, then do so, and apply it to YOUR OWN LIFE.

Obama never said he opposed gay marriage for religious reasons, he has to my knowledge never really given any reason publicly........and in fact the democratic party is not pleased with that and do not back his lack of action for things he has said and not delivered on

There is no reason why we should expect any politician to actively come out and denounce individuals who do not hide their racism. If you're not capable seeing that racist will always say racist things that's your problem. Should we call on Ron Paul to denounce the neo nazi stormfront group who claim he best represents their beliefs...............no. That is not his job. President Obama has said that his views as a Christian, and the past traditions of marriage (and other things perhaps) have influenced his views that marriage is between a man and a woman. i don't think it is ONLY his christian values that have influenced him in regard to gay marriage.

mika, our President has said that his views on gay marrriage are evolving, just as many other things have evolved as our history has shown. women's rights, african american rights, gay rights.

women and african americans had to fight and die for rights, rights that repubs now want to take from women, minorities, and gays.

surely you know the difference between what repubs say and feel about gay marriage vs. President Obama and the democratic party.

when President Obama says his christian faith is the basis for what he believes in regard to marriage, he has also said this is something with which he struggles. for the most part, repubs in washington didn't want to repeal DADT and they want to continue to persue laws that keep gays as second class citizens.

President Obama has himself said, he is evolving on the issue of gay marriage, but is moving civil rights forward for gays and lesbians. repubs are not interested in persuing civil rights (marriage) for homosexuals, they have made their feelings about homosexuals clear; they want to deny them their rights as american citizens, as human beings.

what makes some in the repub party bigots in regard to civil rights (DADT, marriage) for homosexuals is that many repubs are homosexual, yet they support laws that don't give homosexuals equal rights under the law. mark foley and larry craig are two homosexual repubs who gave drugs and alcohol to capitol hill pages, and then took advantage of them.

Obama is clearly not for gay marriage otherwise he would have said so. He has been careful specifically not to do so. The left is for gay marriage and they in fact are not happy obama is not they are simply more upset that the GOP wants not only to ban it but to reinstate useless measures like don't ask don't tell.
