An opponent of Proposition 8, California's voter-approved ban on same-sex nuptials, has his sign blocked by supporters during a demonstration in San Francisco, Thursday, March 5, 2009.
A new study has confirmed what many of us have suspected for years: Homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex and who grew up with authoritarian parents who forbade such desires.
The study, conducted by a team from the University of Rochester, the University of Essex, England, and the University of California in Santa Barbara, will be published the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
Researchers conducted four separate experiments in the U.S. and Germany, with each study involving an average of 160 college students. The implicit and explicit sexual orientations of participants were measured by how they reacted to words and images with sexual associations during a split-second timed task.
The findings may help to explain the personal dynamics behind some bullying and hate crimes directed at gays and lesbians, the authors argue.
"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," says co-author Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester.

I have know so many different types of good people all my life. I just don't understand how fear and hate develop because people are different. How do these people see themselves,.......as normal. I'm afraid not. Thank God we all are different and not a bunch of zombies. If a person believes in a different religion or life style that does not offer any danger to you, why do you care. I think if you are so concerned about their differences, you are the one with the real problem.
TM = Very Well Stated !!!! And The Only Zombie Bunch That Are Dittos Of One Another = Are OF COARSE = The tea-baggin-gop-GOMERS !!!!! he-he-he-heeeee = FACT !!!!
all this anti gay nonsense makes me sick. in the business i'm in, i have known so many gay people. nice people. no different except their sexual orientation.
So are they homophobes or just homosexuals?
Makes you wonder. Who fears them most, those who hide their truth in the closet?
Katie Goodman, Erin Roberg, Maggie Carver-
google this song, "If you're homophobic, yep, you're probably gay".
Very funny!
These people have been told that the Gay's choice to be gay. This so call people believe total lie they can't see beyond their own nose's and there hate for other.
We need no anti-gay marriage laws which essentially do nothing but impose a religious viewpoint on the country. If one doesn't not have tolerance for gays or gay marriage, fine. This is you're right. However one does not have the right to deny another individual the right to participate in something which does not violate their individual religious faith.
If you don't want to have a gay marriage you have wonderful option to get out of that. Don't have a gay marriage. Simple right?
All this dominionist gay marriage would destabilize the time-matrimony continuum....it's just sillyness. Like Ron Paul says I wish they'd just leave it to the church to decide whether they want to do it or not
CC, you're so on it. basically the "sanctity of marriage" argument is COMPLETE b.s.... as the separation of church and state provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" and sanctity is defined as holiness of life and character : GODLINESS.
Religious people do good things for fear of punishment, and desire for reward... atheists and agnostics do good things because they're NICE PEOPLE.
While I agree with your conclusion Sarah I would just say that the term "sanctity" is not quite to be focused on. It is their version of slag you might say, it's more of an expression. The way this interacts with freedom of religion is just that. It interferes with freedom of religion by establishing a religious(abrahamic only) tenent. This is because there are many who do not believe gay marriage is evil, it does not violate their religious conscience. These individuals should have the right to hold ceremony or ritual(wedding, marriage status) which this would include so to forbid them from legally doing so gives other religious view points a higher priority. This is unconstitutional.
It's like this in my opinion. Let's use an example, follow with here...just imagine it.
Now on religious people I would ask you to reconsider your view a little. I think it is unwise to count off religion as a purely negative force. There are and have always been pious people practicing their faith by promoting charity. Think Mother Theresa. I think that you are sort of channeling your disdain for dominionists and "christian traditional values" supporters. However that is a trap by the right to make seem like they represent mainstream spiritual views. All the rebranding of the word "religion" is a ploy since we know they only care xtianity
I believe we all have the right to live are lives as we choose. But I also believe the idea of marriage in America comes for our believe in the bible and so we already have its definition. But we can have civil union with the same legal power in secular rules. I entered into Holy Matrimony before God, believing as a Christian this was His will For us according to His definition. We have taken Gods word out of so much, But I still believe we can do better.
as long as the term "civil union" is used in palce of the word "marriage" for gays, civil unions and marriages will never be equal under the law.
why do we think that everyone should apply "god's law", when each person might interpret what god wants for them differently? if it is personally important for you to interpret the law as YOU THINK god interprets the law, then do so, and apply it to YOUR OWN LIFE.
but do not expect that others HAVE to do the same thing, and that they are committing a sin, if they do not share your views.
let gays marry. then they can be miserable too.
So what does this mean as far as Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann's husband are concerned? Hmmm, just wondering.
I can not speak for Rick or Michele. I just don't see where if we did not establish the institution of marriage, how we can change its definition just to suit our needs. It is not anti-gay to not change the institution. The same scripture advise men and women to not marry unequally yoked. Some have tried to change its meaning to say whites should not marry blacks. Where do we stop misinterperting Gods word and find ways to live within its truths.
Only when men stop claiming they can speak for the divine......so naturally sometime after Hell becomes a ski resort
obama says hes against gay marriage for religious reasons. lol kkk says theyre against gay marriage for religious reasons. how can you dems defend this clown. reps against gay marriage are bigots according to obama. bol but obama being against gay marriage means hes evolving? i call on obama to denounce his supporters, the black panthers. to stop calling on democrats to kill white jews.
Obama never said he opposed gay marriage for religious reasons, he has to my knowledge never really given any reason publicly........and in fact the democratic party is not pleased with that and do not back his lack of action for things he has said and not delivered on
FYI jewish americans are historically quite a treasured and in fact a lot of the party public figures are white jews.......Debby Wasserman Schultz the party chair woman, Chuck Schumer, Gabby Giffords in I recall, Elena Kagan(not at all a politician but a person who is assumed to be liberal), Mike Bloomberg mayor of new york
There is no reason why we should expect any politician to actively come out and denounce individuals who do not hide their racism. If you're not capable seeing that racist will always say racist things that's your problem. Should we call on Ron Paul to denounce the neo nazi stormfront group who claim he best represents their beliefs...............no. That is not his job. Spotlighting people like the NEW black panthers or the kkk gives them a free microphone, there is no need for it.
Perhaps if democrats were killing white jews like all those in their own party leadership then maybe this ridiculous comment would be more.....logical
CC,
President Obama has said that his views as a Christian, and the past traditions of marriage (and other things perhaps) have influenced his views that marriage is between a man and a woman. i don't think it is ONLY his christian values that have influenced him in regard to gay marriage.
mika, our President has said that his views on gay marrriage are evolving, just as many other things have evolved as our history has shown. women's rights, african american rights, gay rights.
women and african americans had to fight and die for rights, rights that repubs now want to take from women, minorities, and gays.
i guess you think this is OK.
thanks for making my points. obama did indeed say his view on gay marriage comes from his faith. reps are called bigots for being against gay marriage while obama being against gay marriage means hes evolving? lol now i know dems think obama is the 2nd coming. as a senator obama voted to give oil companies subsidies, as pres. he now says they should be taken away? wow notice how fast he evolved in an election year. while in the senate obama to not raise the debt limit, saying raising the limit is a sign of poor presidential leadership. as pres he now says raise the debt limit? my point is when a rep changes his mind hes a flipflopper. when obama changes his mind hes evolving.
commie,
surely you know the difference between what repubs say and feel about gay marriage vs. President Obama and the democratic party.
when President Obama says his christian faith is the basis for what he believes in regard to marriage, he has also said this is something with which he struggles. for the most part, repubs in washington didn't want to repeal DADT and they want to continue to persue laws that keep gays as second class citizens.
President Obama has himself said, he is evolving on the issue of gay marriage, but is moving civil rights forward for gays and lesbians. repubs are not interested in persuing civil rights (marriage) for homosexuals, they have made their feelings about homosexuals clear; they want to deny them their rights as american citizens, as human beings.
i do hope you see the difference.
what makes some in the repub party bigots in regard to civil rights (DADT, marriage) for homosexuals is that many repubs are homosexual, yet they support laws that don't give homosexuals equal rights under the law. mark foley and larry craig are two homosexual repubs who gave drugs and alcohol to capitol hill pages, and then took advantage of them.
we don't think President Obama is the 2nd coming, we just think he is a good and decent man, trying to the best FOR EVERYONE, not just the rich and powerful. speaking of the 2nd coming, it is the repubs who believe and say that they think President Obama is the antichrist.
and, lets not talk about hero worship in regard to a president.
rush limbaugh and a dead president (reagan) are heading up the repub party.
at this time, in our history, republicans do appear to be bigoted, and not just against homosexuals. they are having a war on women, and are suppressing the vote for minorities.
Ah commie now I see your point is that obama is guilty of the same sins the GOP is which absolves the republicans from any futute responsibilty for their actions.......which you identify as bad. Okay so then they're both guilty, sounds about right I forgive and follow obama for nothing. I don't care to defend him on his various bush era policies............so no the left isn't happy about those things......neither base is feeling particularly pleased with their politicians
Obama is clearly not for gay marriage otherwise he would have said so. He has been careful specifically not to do so. The left is for gay marriage and they in fact are not happy obama is not they are simply more upset that the GOP wants not only to ban it but to reinstate useless measures like don't ask don't tell. They are mad at both just more upset with republicans becuase their position against it is so much more extreme and radical
Suzette obama is not for gay marriage and he is only evolving on it for the same reasons romney is pretending to be a radicalist culture war conservatives....he wants votes from a certain group
Gays will choose obama because they recognize that the GOP will accelerate the tearing away of civil rights in a radical rapid backwards pace
koch industries and a small cabal with shadow multinational millionaires are heading up the republican party at the moment but the far right dominonists are still managing to get their attack on gays as part of the platform for the party
the republicans take almost any chance they can to denounce gays for being gay because they know the dominionists love to hear that, obama does not even though in reality their views are likely much more similar than either side wants to admit..........the right pretending their views and obama's are so different. they are not
Katie Goodman, Erin Roberg, Maggie Carver-
google this song, "If you're homophobic, yep, you're probably gay".
very funny!
suz, nice try, but bottom line obama is evolving when he changes his mind and reps. . are flipfloppers when they change their minds. obama will always have the gay vote as he is lol evolving. he will finish evolving the day after the nov. election. we all know obama is for gay marriage. as gays will vote for obama no matter what he says he made a political decision to get rep votes by saying hes against gay marriage, he had nothing to lose and everything to gain. you know im right so lets stop this silly talk of evolving.
There is a difference when you lie and say that is not what you said.....that is a flip flop.
Changing you mind is evolving.
