President Barack Obama went on the offensive today, saying House Republicans favor the rich with a budget plan that represents a "doubling down" on a failed economic policy.
In a speech before newspaper executives, Obama says a $3.5 trillion budget plan pushed by House Republicans is "so far to the right, it makes the Contract with America look like the New Deal."
The president says the budget includes cuts so deep that it would hurt middle class families and stall the economic recovery. He notes that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, his expected 2012 rival, has supported the plan, calling it "marvelous" (remember Fernando's Hideaway?).
"This congressional Republican budget is something different altogether," he said. "It is a Trojan horse disguised as deficit-reduction plans. It is really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country. It is thinly veiled social Darwinism."
"This congressional Republican budget ... it's a Trojan horse. Disguised as deficit-reduction plan, it's really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country," he said. "It is a prescription for decline."
Ryan's plan stands little chance in the Democratic-controlled Senate but has laid out the GOP's fiscal priorities.
Ed will have extended coverage of the president's speech tonight on The Ed Show at 8pET on MSNBC. Guests include Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and MSNBC analysts Eugene Robinson, Steve Schmidt and Richard Wolffe.
Also, MSNBC Policy Analyst Ezra Klein will join Ed to point out how the Ryan plan is a reverse Robin Hood deal.
Check out Klein's revealing chart on the Ryan plan. How big would your tax cut be vs. somebody who makes more than a million dollars?

The Ryan plan is clearly a reverse Robin Hood plan, as Ezra Klein said. It will take away every safety net seniors and the poor have. It will do great harm to public schools. It will decimate the middle class and working poor. It will raise the deficit. It will RAISE taxes on the working poor and faltering middle class. It is incredibly destructive to 95% of Americans.
All of these decades old programs, and everything I mentioned will be sacrificed for, GUESS WHAT: So the bastar#@ can give the wealthy bigger tax breaks!!! That's why. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE???? Who supports this insanity? You social issue voters better wake up! They are NOT on your side and never were!
If that isn't enough, it may actually kill my young daughter-in-law. She had to quit working when she came down with a rare and debilitating illness. The prescriptions she has to take are so expensive NO ONE can afford them. She had to go on medicaid. She will die without her medicine. It enables her to live a reasonably normal life. She gets very little being on disability. Everyone helps all they can but we could never afford her medication.
So she could die so the rich can get richer. What a plan. What a guy Ryan is. What a guy....
The Ryan Plan is an attempt of the GOP to perpetuate the disparity of assets and unjust tax code. The top 15% is on top controlling 94% of the wealth, thanks to the unfair policies that keep the salaries low and prices high. Money that is not paid in salaries or benefits go to the stock holders of companies. If I have a company with 50 stock holders and 200 employees. Will I want to pay good salaries is I want to keep my investors happy? No, I would have to pay little, get prices high and keep the union out. That has been the way to keep on distributing the wealth in a capitalist (bad unfair capitalism, that is) way to the top 1 to 15% of the population. The Tax code already benefits them by keeping loop hole in the code that keep that distribution intact. They also have advisers and organizations like ALEC to keep influencing the policy making of the country.
There is a lot at stake. So that is why the top 15% keeps on buying and influencing the politics of the country. The GOP base is too ignorant to see the truth.
I am not saying that all companies are like that, but there is a reason why corporations are spending so much money to influence and to lobby.
President Obama is attempting to change that but he need a congress and senate that will go along with his programs. There are some Democratic officials who are not going along with him, so we have to be careful who we sent to DC.
Yeah A Tojan horse with a naked rider waving a banner which says "The 1% are about the stick it to the 99% 6 ways from Sunday so buy some lub!"
GA girl, LOL! But what is lub?
Lubrication!
Koch brothers, Alec, Grover.....non government officials who have bought the republican party and started using the dregs of the tea party.

Got there! You have some good ones on there! Is that one of those beautiful trees with the white blossoms?
ARCHIVES where??? This page?
I see it. Sorry.
Klein's analysis of tax cuts is meaningless. In order to do the analysis there must be definition as to what tax deductions are eliminated and which one's remain. Since this has yet to be established, Klein must have just pulled numbers out of thin air.
Obama is quite WRONG the Ryan budget is NOT a trojan horse, that would imply that the GOP is hiding that they want to continue or increase defense spending, lower taxes on the rich while raising our taxes, and killing medicare
I have one question, did YOU read Paul Ryan budget? If you did where is Romney-Ryan Budget cuts to contributed to get to $4.6Trillion? And if they killed ACA where are they going to make-up the increase in medical costs?
Gve us details of Romney-Ryan Budget plan, not insults..
Read the budgets of every single republican all raise taxes on the middle
the ryan budget is not going to bring down the deficit and it's not going to balance the budget well not til 2040
Tanya give me logical questions to disporve that the ryan budget will continue the immense defense spending budget, lowers taxes on the wealthy while increasing them on the middle class. I made the claim you should try to disprove not change the subject.
The GOP would discuss the issues but they don't know them.
Here we go: From the frying pan into the Ryan plan!
#1 shows some of the details. It's on the internet. Here's what you need to know: if it passes 99% of us are screwed. Now I realize thick-headed, brain washed Republicans believe it is a road to prosperity (which is its name) and it IS,
for the 1%!
If they don't think they can win I think they will try to push this country into default really I do! Maybe GM & Chrysler were part of a plan to get FORD to be the only car company in the US but you know how that turned out! GM & Chrysler are way up in sales and Ford only 5% but that's better than a fall. Corporate America is having a fight and we all will lose if we don't watch our step. We must get a handle on the politics in this country or we the people will just be words on a piece of paper.
When PAC money was allowed it is invisible and can't be tracked. Ha money leaves trails and its quite a game the GOP is playing somehow I think things will turn out okay in the end. But I hope we don't have to go to Washington with torches and pitchforks. But if the GOP wins, its time to warm things up a bit! If protest doesn't work.
As far as banks go when Obama bailed them out it was never for the purpose of payouts for the financial advisors. But a the only way to protect the members bank holdings and to keep the country from turning into Greece and every part of the banking system from failing. That is the purpose of the FDICA is it not? Some of what Obama wants has been set in place, but more oversight has been taken and the BANKS have been warned if they do not take care of the best interest of the members it will be regulation and maybe jail time. They have been warned! He doesn't want to be a dictator, just sound banking and not foolish get rich quick seams with the members money the only thing at risk. If they do not NO MORE MR. NICE GUY! The President is a good and smart and more than fair man. But we must back him and support him in this hard time so this never happens again!
I hope Romney and Ryan stick as close together as the Bobbsey twins until the election. And I'm assuming Romney will be the nominee. Let the Dems keep pointing out how harmful that budget would be to the poor and middle class. Everything these stupid Republicans do just screams, "Vote for the Dems!" They don't have the brains to run this country, or any country for that matter. But, I think they have proven that with Bushie.
They cheated and got GWB & Frankenstein a second term and proved they could run this country, This country right into the ground. Obama and all the democrats must stick together and take each others backs. I feel this summer and fall the 99% will rise to the occasion and make a stand. If we we lose than welcome to subservience. Under corporate fascism!
I know they have read one part of the Bible, "I am not my brothers keeper"
I believe that's "Am I my brother's keeper?" And all the Reps are yelling "Hell no, let him die!"
As Margaret Thacher said, socialism is alright until you run out of other people's money.
Come on liberals, progressives, own what you are ! Admit that you are socilaists !
MJB: Cain said after killing Abel "I an not my bothers keeper" Maybe his first name was Herman?
Except I'm not. In fact politicalcompass.com rates me as a left leaning libertarian.
GOP/Bush era democrat trickle down economics(reaganomics) is fine when it trickles down, sadly it never does. Helping out rich people exclusively helps only rich people.....(gasp)........what a surprise
Same here. I'm in the area of Nelson Mandela on the international chart. Not bad company to keep.
LOGOUT: Borrow today pay tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.......And someday never comes. Because deficits don't matter. Dick Cheney! War criminal and professional shyster!
Reagan is still waiting for the cust he was promised by a Democratic congress. Obama refuses to cut anything. He only wants to take from the producers in order to give to a nest full of blind baby birds with their mouths open.
When ever anyone, anywhere, claims that Reagonomics did not work, they are either lying throgh their teeth, retarded, completely misinformed, or all of the above. The fact is, socialism, or trickle down government, same thing, has never worked, and that is what Obama wants for this country. Sorry, but you youngsters have been sold a bill of goods ! Sad, very sad!
Cynical Citizen: I agree with you completely, my replied was to the person who was trying to defend the Romney-Ryan budget.
Once again, I do apologize.... As a person who's personally benefited from Obamacare, also from payroll tax cut... So, I'll a starch supporter of this President...
And voter I have a great interest in this election... And when I hear people putting mis-information and ttried to pass them off as fact I always what to know where they get their informaton.
Tanya that might explain why I couldn't understand what you were saying, sorry!
My mistake.
Dear Ed... you are nuts, you are ugly but sweet....and sooo out of reality.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ED - BASHER ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The beak strikes again!
Oh, MD/MI, I liked your last beak better; the one with the blue background!
Speaking of Ed, he looks great lately; like he lost weight.
Dear xxx, cynical, tanya, Ed, etc... Do you have children?
Together? Sorry I'm not from Utah!
xxxooo, Good one again. LOL
Patty's ignoring me. I don't rate. (Good)!
Good morning guys, another great day in Texas! Sure seems to have a lot of people that don't like Ryan's plan! To listen to MSNBC, it sounds like a plot by the rich to soak the poor. Some of you folks need to broaden you exposure to what's going on in this country!
The Ryan budget is written for the taxpayers in this country, you know guys that make this country work. It cuts and controls the massive "entitlement" spending! Finally! The working folk in this country are glad to see someone that cares about our hard earned tax dollars!
Some here need to get their emotions under control and listen to the people that actually pay the bills! Stop the massive spending for the "non-workers" in this country! Paul, we are just thankin'
Bombs away! All dummies...thud thud thud. Eject eject eject! The Captain our Tea Party banner!
XXX, no offense, but, by your own logic your party is owned by Soros, the unions, and Hollywood. Your party created the incarceration of multiple generations into poverty, the ghetto, and mass dependence on the government. All in the name of compassion ! Say hello to Greece if Obama is reelected!
Come on XXX, own up to what you, the president , and your party are, socialists.
Capt
Maybe you should read it. It raises taxes on all but the top 2%. Maybe you should try getting a differant view than Fox and the drugster give with all their lies.
ronnie onomics I doubt you even know what socialism is. And you might want to do some world history classes and economic courses. We are the only industrialised nation without a form of capitalism AND socialism.
The tea bagger trolls have landed again.
Even if Obama confiscated every penny the rich make, it still could not pay for the socialist country that he desires.
I wish Obama would be honest and admit that he is a socialist ! He should own it !
Raygun: Why don't you see that you are part of a fake party that is owned by the Koch Brothers called the Tea Party! Can't you see that all the PAC money is to buy your rights away? Guess not. Or is it that you like the idea of being controlled by Corporate money?
ronnie onomics
If he said that he would be lying.
I think the tea baggers believe the top 1% will include them. They've got some major surprises comeing.
Larry #16.2 Big surprises and big disappointments. They've demonized socialism so much they've come to believe their new definition of if.
Obama, by the way, is FAR from being a socialist. He's more like Ronald Reagan than Steven Harper.
Most of those terrible socialist countries have free health care. Many do way better than we do with our unregulated capitalism.
Here are some facts about budgets from the last 12 years. It can be verified by going to the Dept of Treasury's Financial Management Service web site at www.fms.treas.gov. During the 8 years of the Bush Presidency the total deficits which included spending to finance the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan totaled 2.579 trillion. This included $450 billion of the $1.3 trillion deficit for FY 2009 which was Obama's first budget which included the stimulus spending of $850 billion. For the Obama Presidency the defict will be appromimately $5 trillion which includes the $850 billion stimulus spending in 2009, $1.3 trillion in 2010, 1.3 trillion in 2011 and the projected $1.3 trillion defict for the current fiscal year.
Contrary to what has been posted by others the Bush deficits numbers did include all defense spending for the two wars. The largest deficit for Bush was $450 in both 2008 and 2009. What is puzzling about these numbers is why the deficits in 2010 and beyond did not come back down to the 2008 level of around $450 billion. There was supposedly only the one stimulus in 2009 and that accounted for the increase to $1.3 trillion in that year. But it appears from the data that the stimulus spending continued in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Spending has continued to increase from $2.9 Trillion in FY 2008 to $3.6 Trillion in 2011 while revenues have decreased slightly from 2.5 in 2008 to 2.3 in 2011 which was the result of fewer taxpayers on the rolls.
It would be refreshing to have a civil conversation on how to address this critical issue. Both Obama and Ryan have proposed budgets which do not really address how to significantly decrease the massive deficits that have occurred over the last 12 years. What needs to be addressed in my opinion is why spending has increased by over $700 billion dollars from the 2008 level and why it never went back down after the 2009 stimulus. It would appear that the stimulus programs created in 2009 were not scaled back or eliminated while revenues remained fairly constant. It also doesn't appear that by simply raising taxes on the wealthy that this would make a sizeable dent in the deficit. I have seen projections that eliminating the Bush tax cuts for the upper income levels would only bring in another $100 billion or so. So maybe a combination of some tax increases and more substantial spending cuts, especially those that were part of the original stimulus may be the answer. Also the Pres and Congress should revisit the recommendations of the deficit panel that the Pres formed. There were some common sense bi-partisan ideas in that study. Just a suggestion.
If you want to talk about bi-partisan ideas, you are on the wrong message board. Not criticizing the board, which I find entertaining, but it's just the truth.
Seems the bush tax cuts didn't create any jobs, So it seems you are saying to tax the rich even more than if they weren't there at all. If anything would have been done last year it may have slowed the growing debt and the deficit could have been held in check, But NO the GOP has to worry more about PAC money and getting re-elected than trying to do anything about it. The whole time the debt grows plus interest as we speed head first for another downgrade of credit further compounding the problem. Thanks GOP for making things worse much worse. I an convinced that what the puppet masters want is for the US to go into default, so like Bain Capital they can reap. Why do you think they want Romney for president he is a master at this.
The easiest solution to the debt and deficit problem is to take the previous year's budget and reduce every department by 1%. In ~7 years we would be in the black and paying off the debt! No exceptions, every single department! Too simple, I'm guessin'
How about freezing the interest on the US stocks and bonds? And keep investors from cashing in for one more year past maturity, Than a bonus of 1% if they do? Just askin?
We the people of the USA should be screaming for action before its to late. Maybe it is.
Capt. Sounds to easy. This idea yours? What ever we gotta get the ball rolling...backwards! Soon! I heard the IMF warned to get your financial problems in order.....News from China nothing here or anything I have found yet to prove it....
The whole world is heading for disaster in many ways. But I wish when it was written in the bible that...Be fruitful and multiply, But not too much! We are unsustainable to ourselves,But that will change soon enough....
XXX OOO, Good Afternoon. I think God took care of everything. If the world is to populated there will be famine . Man is his own worst enemy. He poisons the land, the seas and air. Man is so greedy he wants it all and leaves this world poorer than church mouse. The seas it has been said and what happens to its creatures like the whale ,when they are gone we will be not long behind. I wonder if man will wake up and protect this beautiful world or just continue to destroy it ?
Another thing we could do is raise the minimum wage to $10.00 an hour. And make all business pay into the unemployment fund for those who work for less than 32 hours a week.
Why do insurance companies charge more for single than for groups? Unfair we are all part of a group in an insurance company aren't we? Why do singles pay more taxes than married, Its said that its cheaper for two to live than one? Unfair it cost more for a single person living alone! Just goes for sucks!
Kudos to the President Of the USA! He took off the velvet gloves and came out swinging! For many of us who did not sleep through the Bush Years and can read what went down then. We Know who got us here and who has been trying with all his might to pull us out of a deep depression. Yes we all agree we have been in a downward spiral for decades. Only one wants America to be strong again President Obama. Romney will put us in a tail spin again. Its by the rich for the rich, and if you are not part of the county club then life will be very hard !
Pam = RITE-ON !!!!!!
MD/MI, Good afternoon. Hope the weather is beautiful where you are. We have storms this morning but this afternoon absolutely beautiful. I get a kick out of Romney trying to go after Obama. Now he is trying to kiss up to women. He will be the nominee and Sanatorium can take that to the bank. The stakes are high for this poker game ! Obama has a great poker face and knows how to play the game.
Hi, Pam, I won't be around tonight, so I'll say "Hi" now. We are having the same great day here in spite of the pall over PA with Rick Santorum's visit. LOL
Did you see where all of us were drooling and slobbering over your trifle? Ha!
I had the baby (5mos. now) here today. He is so darn cute. Our cat didn't know what to make of him! He kept circling him and looking at him, the he'd back up. Then he'd run from the room! It was funny. My daughter-in-law was laughing so hard.
Might catch you late tonight. Hold down the vine for me. Don't feed the trolls!
I hope Mr. Romney does choose Mr. Ryan for his V.P. running mate. That will put the final nail on his coffin. Ryan's plan clearly puts the tax burden on the working middle class and poor in this country. This chart needs to be put on every billboard and tv ad in the country. They are all about producing more serfs in this country and they are going to do this not only with their faulty tax cut proposals that benefit the rich but by eliminating women's reproductive rights so they can ensure the population continues to grow to support their way of life. More SERFS!!
