The Supreme Court is debating how much of the health care overhaul law should be salvaged if the health insurance requirement is thrown out. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
Three days of U.S. Supreme Court arguments on the Affordable Care Act wrapped up today, and Republicans are hopeful for victory. But what's their plan if the law is struck down?

I WILL drop ALL my HEALTH INSURANCE if it RULED by the Supreme Court that OBAMACARE is turned down! In the form of a strike to NOT let the greedy rule MY LIFE! I will get my coverage on Ebay!
xxx, why do that, just do what a tea party lady said on Hardball. She doesn't want to buy insurance, she just wants Doctors and hospitals to treat her if needed free of charge but she didn't want to talk about Canadian style health care. That is soialized medicene.
i will do what the illegals do in arizona, under REAGANCARE.all the illigals just go 2 hosp.e.r. and use the e.r.has a clinic.run up big bills and not pay.Can anybody tell me why Romney wil not repeal REAGAN CARE ?
xxx, At least you would be "Free" to drop your insurance. Health Insurance is generally purchased by a person that has acquired wealth to some degree. An 18 year old working at a minimum wage job typically doesn't have insurance because of two things; 1) Can't afford it and 2) Nothing to take from him to pay medical bills if he goes to the hospital. As a person accumulates wealth, buys a home, cars, stocks, ect... all that wealth is at risk in the event of illness or accident, so people that have accumulate wealth generally buy insurance.
We will all eventually buy, lease, own, or operate a car. Should some one be forced to buy Auto Insurance before he has a car? The logic the argument used by the Government concerning Health Care could be applied to Auto Insurance. It would have the same result. It would introduce more people to the system and lower rates for every one. In part it would transfer the burden of the cost of insurance from people that need it to people that do not.
As for simply going to the emergency room, like an "Illegal", if you have aquired any wealth, it is not recommended, you will end up paying for the services. The hospital will place a lean on your car, house, etc...
Perhaps the answer is to get a job, work your way to a better job, and when you have accumulated some wealth purchase insurance. This has worked for long time. Of course, when you do start accumulating wealth, you will start paying Federal and State Income Tax so those that can't afford housing, food, clothing, childcare, medical care, cell phones, transportation, cable TV, Air Conditioning, and college can have every thing you have worked for.
You basically have two options. You can sit back and live off the work of others while you collect government benefits or you can be the guy that earns his way and pays for the government programs. In the past character and ethics required the later of an individual, today I am afraid it is socially acceptable to live off of others.
Thought for the day:
In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme. ~ Aristotle
Hallelujah
We shall overcome!
excellent quote, mjb.
Rise up......join your 99%
Thank you kv6707. I will have another one tomorrow. ;D
The problem is, the United States Of America is NOT a democracy!
It is a representative Republic...
In a true democracy, like Aristotle postulates, EVERYONE GETS TO VOTE... ON EVERYTHING! Every bill, every amendment would require a public debate and vote... for every village, every town, every city, every county, every state... Majority rules in every case... Nobody would have time to work, much less live...
In America, the states are carved up into districts, supposedly with equal populations (thus, the census) and each district elects a single Representative... These districts have never really been equal, but as a legal fiction, it allows the Representative with the fewest constituents an equal voice as he with the most... This especially applies since the House of Representatives limited the number of Reps. to 435...
Each state, no matter how densely or sparsely populated, has 2 Senators... They represent the state as a whole, not a particular group of people...
Representatives represent a constituency... Senators represent the states... Despite that, they are still human, and subject to influences outside their actual purview... This leads to lobbying, bribery, corruption, scandals...
Good luck finding anything truly democratic that works... The Occupy movement comes close, but even that has so many splinter groups that don't communicate, the prospect of them going national is infinitesmal...
True David, but it's better than what the Repubs have in store for us!
MJB- I didn't realize the GOP had proposed changes to the structure as David has described? Are you for certain, or are you overplaying reality?
rusty,
repubs haven't proposed any changes, they just want to repeal this health care reform under President Obama. the repubs (in washington) don't want to leave any "residue" of President Obama's health care reform, because they want to undermine him in every possible way, to destroy him.
its a shame, because this is their idea, as far back as H.W. bush. mark pauly who worked in the bush administration then, said he is dissapointed in how the repubs are responding to THEIR OWN IDEA. if repubs ever address health care, they will use the individual mandate as romney did in mass. then, as romney is doing, they will say it is "different" than what President Obam put on the table, for one reason or another.
Suzette- I suspect you're right about the GOP not proposing changes to our ruling structure. MJB seems to be operating in a state of confusion on this topic.
On Obamacare- they do want to repeal it, but time will tell if it is even an issue. I've learned long ago not to read any predictions into questioning by the Supreme Court, but it sure looks as if they are going to rule it to be unconstitutional. If so- it won't really matter who came up with the idea.
the individual mandate was proposed by Sen Grassley who continued to be infavor of this (with over 50% of the gop) until Pres Obama agreed with it. to strike down this legislation would place all of us at the mercy of insurance companies, would deny coverage to many, would increase our insurance rates because unisured still become ill and need medical help. we are mandated to have auto insurance. it is only fair that all should also carry medical insurance as we will all require medical care at one time or another. it is unfair to expect those who carry insurance to front increased premiums to care for the unisured. Romney's health care plan is the basis of what is now called obamacare. unfortunately the partisonship of the supreme court as well as their conflict of interest (several own large amounts of stock in insurance/drug companies per the media) will prevail. pitiful that only the rich will ultimately be represented not the 99%. the American people will lose yet again.
Try Again! Troll! 1%er You got nothin! 2200 pages say different.
Who you talkin' to xxx ooo? Not Kathy I hope! If it is, reread it again. I think you misunderstood it.
Kathy, They say there are 57 million Americans without Heath Insurance, while at the same time there are over 47 million collecting Food Stamps. Do you think the 47 million collecting Food Stamps will be forced to buy Health Insurance or pay a penalty? The bottom line those that have more will always be paying for those that have less. All Obamacare does is provide a greater amount of services to those with less income by taking more from those with greater incomes, it is "Redistribution of Wealth". Tax Payers and those with Health Insurance already bare the burden of paying for services provided to those with less income, Obamacare simply makes them pay more to increase services to others.
As for car insurance, are you forced to buy it if you don't have a car or you don't drive one? The thing that most people on this site do not understand is there will be no stopping the Federal Government if Obamacare stands. The Supreme Court decision, if it up holds Obamacare, would pave the ground for all types of Federally Mandated purchases by the citizen. Auto Industry is failing mandate a car purchase. Auto Insurance industry is failing mandate its purchase by every one. Domestic Tennis Shoe Manufacturing is failing mandate every one but US made shoes, etc....
This is not about Health Care, it is about the Power of Government over the population.
I'm not surprised at anything that the Republicans say any more. My premium will continue to go up. Why couldn't we have the same Health Care that our elected officials have?
gloriaCa
u r so right we pay for cheney 2 have transplant,we pay for congress 2 have $1,000,000 life insurance policy.also we pay for viagra for all the guys who want it.sounds so fair 2 me
Forget heart disease. Forget about cancer. The insurance companies will deny you coverage for a “pre-existing” condition of a hang nail (almost). If you have ever tried to get individual health insurance like I have over the past several years, you would know what a totally humiliating experience it is. You are grilled by a unknown “nurse practitioner” of some sort over the phone about every prescription you have ever taken and every doctor you have ever seen. They ask you questions so personal I have never told my mother. From that they cull “pre-existing” conditions and either jack up your premiums while reducing your coverage (by excluding your every hang nail) or they deny you coverage.
I now have health insurance, but not on my own. THANK YOU OBAMACARE!!! I finally got a job as a temp, and under ACA companies with 50 employees or more must provide health insurance to their W-2 employees. This includes temp agencies. This closed a HUGE loop hole in which companies outsourced jobs to temps to avoid paying benefits.
Mandated individual premiums are, by definition, unconstitutional. People are beginning to see the difference in the two major parties.
One, the Democratic Party is for "equality," whose goal is to protect citizens from personal disasters, taking care of those who don't choose wisely.
The other, the Republican Party is for liberty, the personal freedom to excel or fall behind, leaving citizens to suffer the consequences of their poor choices.
Guess we all need to decide which America we want to live in! Which do you choose?
i no i dont want the republican party that wrecked the country that keeps bringing down wall street
Kapt Klutz do you realize how idiotic you people sound? You cry of your liberties being taken away yet you're all for forcing women to have a vaginal ultra sound, restrict voter rights and want to change the constitution to fit the teabaggers ludicrous ideology. Damn you people are pathetic but very entertaining. Another hilarious fact is you morons hate HCR but when it's broken down and explained in simplistic terms even a teabagger can understand, they are all for it. Unbelievable
Hey JiT, true conservative would never mandate unnecessary medical procedure (vaginal ultra sounds), I don't know what HCR is, and would never attempt to take away a woman's right to choose an abortion!
Think about your own "ludicrous" aspersions, we stand for personal freedom within the bounds of law and order! Why are you so against requiring a picture ID to vote? Join the rest of us in the 21st century! As you said -
Brett, I thought the Mortgage crisis brought down Wall St? Try to remember, the GOP is pro-Wall St. I don't think we should pay for Chaney's heart transplant or anyone's Viagra. Just sayin'
Good point, gloriaCa! Just remember our government employees can legislate whatever they want, including taking care of themselves first! Don't most liberals support the government employees' union? Remember, we are not all equal on their "Animal Farm," the pigs are "more equal."
Capt, While I agree with your basic point, you fail to address the one thing driving the division; Income Disparity. As we continue on this path of "Global Markets" the disparity between the wealthy and the poor will only continue to grow. Currently 50% of the population does not earn enough to meet Federal Income Tax Thresholds and the numbers are growing. If the trend of the past few decades continue that percentage will only increase, there will indeed come a time when the majority of the population will be poor while fewer and fewer people become wealthy.
As I see it both Political Parties are responsible. The Democrats continue to spend more money than we have to create more and more Social Programs that repeatedly fail and addict the population to government services, while the Republicans establish policies that benefit big business with complete disregard for the impacts on the population.
The answer to our problem cannot be found in simply saying people must work and earn their own way, if work is providing a reasonable income is not available. On the other hand simply creating Federal Programs to address the day to day needs of the population is also no the answer.
There has to be middle ground on which Political Parties can work together for the salvation of the country.
Now John In Texas, don't go making the same mistake as I did by calling others here Morons. I said it and was banned. I'm pretty sure you won't though because you be speaking in-tune here!
Speaking in tune, no, speaking the truth, yes. Thats the difference.
You too, UncleFesterWart? Does seem to be some bias as to who is banned, don't you think?
Guess it depends on who is defining "truth" doesn't it, JiT (assonance intended)? Another great example of liberal arrogance!
Ever notice that our little tea bagging republicans just don't seem to understand that the reason they get banned and liberals don't is because it is not liberals coming into a conservative blog spreading left wing facts to disrupt conversations and try to create havoc. Nor is it liberals getting banned that make up a re reg name to continue to cause trouble. Nor is it liberals who attack the host's of the blog. Always victims that refuse to look at the behaviors they display that gets them banned.
Concerning this accusation of the Rev's Jackson and Sharpton: What is the point of accusing them of being opportunistic in this event? Of course they are making use of Trayvon Martin's death to further an agenda. That is how such agendas gain traction. This tragedy opens a window for some good to come of it. They would have been fools not to do get involved. When did it become a crime to have an agenda?
However, I do think that focusing on non-race-related aspects of this case will further the ends of the equal rights movement more efficiently and expediently than emphasizing the racial aspects. I do realize that we do need to keep a spotlight on these social issues. We need to keep them in the conversation. I agree that it's important. But in this particular case, the prudent move would be to focus efforts to extract a justice that applies for everyone (i.e. the exposure of corruption in the system and the danger of "Stand your ground" laws).
Getting a conviction against George Zimmerman is not going to be possible. We all know this. The investigation can't produce evidence with credibility. It's simply too late now. And I realize, also, that even an arrest would feel like some compensation at this point, but I think it would be a mistake to have him arrested now, knowing the case against him is already compromised. Once he was acquitted, he would have the opportunity to bring his own suit, and I don't think anyone wants to him gain from his actions.
I sure have to salute New York Times columnist, Charles BLOW for not changing his name. I mean I'd certainly accept Sir Thomas Crapper being an expert on "crap"... but getting facts from a guy named "Blow"? If surnames have meaning, where did his come from?
A sailor? A weatherman? A pugilist?
Maybe he's a distant relative of the mythical tailor who killed seven flies with a swatter, then made a belt bragging. "SEVEN AT ONE BLOW"...
http://fairytales4u.com/story/sevenat.htm
Jesse Jackson accused of exploiting Trayvon Martin's death??? "NO, Say it ain't so Joe" Truthfully though, JJ's picture should be right alongside the word "exploitation" in every dictionary. And Reverend Jesse Jackson? that's an oxymoron! Get it straight Jess, MLK was a reverend and JJ was in a sitcom back in the 1970's.
And Ed namedroppin "Master Alan Grayson" A,K,A, "Robbin"... the genetic mutant and comic book hero of the Silver age? I mean at least "Batman" can go out at night without robbing, but can Master Grayson? His face looks like it caught fire and it was put out with a pitchfork. Aside from that, his words flow and sound like a man dying from an overdose of steroids. You lefties get your marching orders from people not of this universe.
On Nova tonight I watched a segment Cracking your Genetic Code on DNA genome sequencing .... testing is rapidly advancing to the point of them being able to determine if your at a future risk for Prostate cancer , Lung cancer , Breast cancer , Alzheimers .... you name it its written in your Code , its so acurate that it will eventually replace your social security number . Some of the new treatments that can fix the bad genes if you have a desease can cost upwards of $200,000 yearly, without insurance you don't recieve treatment, if your insurance company gets your DNA report they can deny you coverage because of a pre existing health issue ! If this Healthcare Law is Repealed We are all from at any age Male, Female, GOP. DEM. or IND. in jeopardy of being on that pre existing health condition list.
That knowledge would make insurance rates more "fair," don't you think? At least more consistent!
So I see a woman holding up a sign, and woman behind it, that reads: "Protect my Health"! What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that women should be afforded free birth control meds becuase somehow pregnancy is now defined as an untreatable disease? If so, shouldn't my son receive his anti-seizure medication each month for free with no co-pay. You know what I think about the so-called war on women's health? Kiss my ass, call it a love affair and don't expect me to pay a dime for you not protecting your own health!
This whole insurance issue is B.S. We need universal healthcare like every other civilized country in the world. I've had health insurance for 25 years, and believe me, it's stacked against the consumer. They deny claims, prescribed medications, and have all kinds of 'rules' such as pre-approval so that they can say, "oops, you didn't follow the rules so we are denying your claim". Any FOR PROFIT (and that includes all American companies) insurance company has a major goal to make money, not provide the best care for the policy holder. Time to join the rest of the free world and demand insurance and hospitals be non-profit.
Carole- I could support that. I really think that we, as a society, ought to have whatever we think is important. If we, as a country, think health care should be an entitlement, then we should do it. But- if we really think that way, then we should be willing to fund it. Not expect that rich guy over there or that corporation on the other side of the country to pay for it for us. Figure what it will cost- look at the total amount of commerce conducted, then do some simple math and develop a National Sales Tax- nothing excluded, to pay for it. If it is 5%, then everytime I buy something or pay for something, I will be contributing 5% to the plan. Everyone who spends a dollar will be funding it. If costs increase at a greater rate than sales, then the tax rate will increase. Likewise if it increases at a lower rate than sales, or even decreases like proponents say- then the sales tax rate will come down. This will work if the only thing it pays for is health care, and the money doesn't get siphoned off for lots of other stuff.
Adrienne Rich died yesterday at the age of 82. She was a visionary.
"The Los Angeles Times recounted the way Rich refused the National Medal for the Arts in 1997 in a letter to then-President Bill Clinton. “The radical disparities of wealth and power in America are widening at a devastating rate,” Rich wrote. “A president cannot meaningfully honor certain token artists while the people at large are so dishonored.”
There is a law of unintended consequences in nature.
If the health insurance mandate is unconstitutional, then so is the mandate that American citizens are force to use (buy) Federal Reserve money that is the product of a privately owned banking cartel.
will buisness for FedEx and UPS increase after the republicans in congress sucessfully enact laws to destroy THE POST OFFICE???? Will the stock prices they own go up dramatically?along with thier lobbying pay offs will they need to open off shore accounts?Does this remind you of mitt romney? WILL THEY EVER NEED HEALTHCARE????????
Does anyone know what the stock ticker is for FedEx? Is UPS ticker UPS? Sounds like a good investment.
