Mitt Romney at a town hall in Illinois (3/19)
Mitt Romney has simplified the choice that female voters will have to make in November if they’re looking for free access to birth control: “vote for the other guy.”
During a town hall event in Illinois yesterday, the former Massachusetts governor had to answer for his opposition to extended contraception coverage and desire to defund Planned Parenthood.
After telling a female attendee who told him she’d like free access to birth control to vote for President Obama, he continued:
“Politicians get up and promise you all sorts of free stuff. And say, ‘I’m gonna to give you more and more stuff and you won’t have to pay for it.’ And you know what? We get elected that way, in many cases, politicians do. That’s not something that I subscribe to. My own view is that we have to tell people the truth and we’re going to have to demand sacrifice of the American people.”
It is important to note that Romney’s “truth” has changed throughout the years.
In 1994, Romney attended a Planned Parenthood fund-raiser where his wife made a $150 donation from a joint account. In 2005, when Romney was Governor, he signed a bill that expanded the number of low-income people eligible for family planning services.
When a second woman asked him where he expected the millions of women who rely on Planned Parenthood for health services outside the realm of birth control (ranging from mammograms to HPV vaccines), Romney responded:
“Well, they could go wherever they’d like to go — this is a free society. But here is what I say, which is the federal government should not tax these people to pay for Planned Parenthood. There are a lot of things that we have in our society that we may like, that we might not like, but that government should not be paying for.”
This is where Romney reveals, yet again, how out of touch he really is. According to Planned Parenthood’s 2010 annual report, 51% of patients served were uninsured.
Romney has also called for cutting funds to Title X— funds that legally cannot go towards abortion services but do fund cancer screenings, adolescent abstinence counseling, infertility services, contraception counseling, and preventative services.
Title X clinics served over 5 million people in 2010, 69% of which were at or below the poverty level ($18,310 a year for a family of three) and 67% of which were uninsured.
It would be fair to assume that Romney has never forgone health care for the sake of feeding his family—but by stripping the options that low-income families have for low-cost or free healthcare, that could be exactly what he’s doing to millions of Americans.
Ed will have more on the GOP's ongoing war on women's health, tonight on The Ed Show at 8pmEST on MSNBC.

Mitt Romney doesn't hate planned parenthood and he's really not all that concerned about abortion he's just giving the republican base which is home to a lot of dominionist radicals free things to get elected
They always like to draw it up as a case of someone often some minority or whoever disagrees with them wanting to do no work and get things for free....and they expect us to believe that this is what has really caused the budget problems not wars of choice, not corporate welfare, not outlandish congressional salaries..........
I'll tell you what the GOP has done a great job in getting us to focus on all manner of things that did not cause this recession aka the stew we're in right now
The only thing Mitt hates is bad service in a restaurant. I wonder who spits in his soup.......?
When he talks he doesn't say anything.....none of them do. How are they going to turn things around?
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ looking forward to another dull Tuesday......when in the hell will this be over......I'm ready.

He is the poorest excuse for a thinking, feeling human being there ever was. He, nor any of the other candidates give a damn about the majority of the people in this country. I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear what they say about the crowds they have just suckered into giving them their vote. Those suckers would be very angry to hear what the rich REALLY think of them I'm afraid.

How could any woman vote for one of these republicons, there is a war on women by the republicons, they have a war on everything that will help the people, if a republicon get in office we all will be in the soup line, tent city will be our new home, no more jobs romney likes to fire people, santorum is crazy, romney has no clue what the real world is and romney is a phony, none of the republicons care about you they only care about the rich, and the republicons are liars, they just lie, lie and lie this is the republicons. I am voting for President Obama
Over the past several months, it appears that one can stereotype the GOP into two categories: ignorant or out of touch.
Mitt had his education paid for, his first home given to him by his parents when he was first married, free health care his whole life, jobs handed to him. He has no clue. I have no idea why most Americans would vote for him. I know so many people who are poor, on government assistance, welfare, ect, who LIKE Mitt Romney. Do they listen to this man when he talks. They are voting against themselves. Good, vote for Mitt and have everything taken away from you. Mitt only cares about the upper class and corporations. He doesn't know what it is like to be a middle class or a poor American. He say's he is LDS but the LDS church teaches to give to the poor, be charitable, help the sick and the needy...everything he is against. Also, he is consonantly caught in lies and not honest in business dealings...he shouldn't even have a temple recommend. Not a good example of an LDS member at all. Very embarrassing to the LDS church.
And his sons will never fight in the wars he wants to send our sons into.
Giving is a personal choice and not a government mandate beyond what we all can agree upon. That is the decision for this election.
this ryan budget plan will take untill 2040 to balance the budget. why it will take so long? the working class, senior's, and poor will be paying for it, not the 1% that will pour over 1 billion dollars into this election. the supreme court opened up a can of worms that American's will never recover from. hope they can live with this decision, they american voters have to live with. i'm guessing they got payed well for their decision.
It is apparent Mitt has started to hone his message and it resonates well with alot of Americans. Obama had a chance to turn things around and, well lets just say he came up more than a bit short. Now we have a difference and a choice.
you know Mitt is a moderate not conservative right? Romney and Obama being mostly centrists have the same view of a ton of different things....Romney's rationale for running was that with his experience with venture capitalism he could create "jobs(even though he Bain was about wealth)"
the economy is improving and as Romeny admitted on Laura Ingraham's radio program in reality it is getting better.."you have a better idea Laura..."........remember that one from a couple months back
Romney could be argued as being the best for the economy, we can humour that for the purposes of this metaphor....So Romney is great on the economy but he is not an expert on foreign policy, warfare, diplomacy and reaching out to the world..so that all adds up and negates his potential economic successes
Oh and Mitt's plan, the pervasive bumper sticker/tag line of the GOP, is to raise taxes on the middle class and make the top tax rates lower
The GOP's redistribution of wealth policies need to be exposed. Yes, it is in fact applicable to the right, trickle down or more accurately vacuum up economics. I say this because if you consider the vacuum itself to be a testament to the apparatus of government ruled by big money...and think of dirt as wealth, with the majority of the population, the middle class as carpet.
So here it goes the GOP uses a vacuum to manipulate to suck up our prosperity whilst standing on top of us....once that dirt has been collected would you toss it back on the floor? No because that would be pointless since you already picked it up once, if you dump the dirt then you just negated the reason you vacuumed it up in the first place.
In simplest terms helping rich people first and foremost was a plan we attempted and tried. This plan clearly has not benefited the middle class, only the rich have gotten richer and upward mobility is being actively destroyed by the GOP with their denial Reagan-esque dominionist beliefs
If Mitt's message resonates amongst the people why has he not been able to wrap up the nomination? Why is voter turn out and enthusiasm so low?
So according to Romney the American people won't get free stuff what about the oil company and its fee stuff (subsidies)?
Great job Toyta3 breaking down Paul Ryan's budget proposal.
Hopefully, Obama will taut is successes and be as succinct.
Some say the Buffet rule will only bring in $46 billion over 10 years but I say it's a start to income equality.
