Trayvon “Trey” Martin was visiting his father in a Orlando suburb (Sanford, Florida) when he decided to go a nearby convenience store to buy his younger brother a pack of candy.
Martin leaving the store caught the attention of a white neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, 26. Zimmerman thought Martin appeared suspicious and called 911. Local police said they would handle it from there.
But Zimmerman, armed with a 9mm hand gun, disobeyed police and elected to trail the 17-year-old Martin in his car.
Zimmerman told police that at some point the unarmed Martin noticed he was being followed and asked "what’s your problem." Shortly after some kind of altercation occurred and neighbors said they heard gunfire.
When police arrived they found Martin dead with a pack of Skittles in his pocket about 70 feet from his father’s home.
Zimmerman says he acted in self-defense. He had a legal permit to carry the handgun used that night.
Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. told the Huffington Post "For some reason he (Zimmerman) felt that Trayvon, the way that he was walking or appeared, seemed suspicious to him."

I'm sorry to hear about this tragedy. A young life taken in such a senseless manner is awful. I know Sanford, FL where this occurred very well. Lot's of black and white folk live there, for the most part in pretty good harmony. What a shame.
Self defense? A legal permit to carry is no excuse for murder! Following someone is already an act of aggression in and of itself. Doing so while armed is pre-meditated in that it shows intent to do bodily arm. There is NOT excuse - he should be indicted and tried for 1st degree murder. Period!

This is incredibly sad...having a son I couldn't image what his parents are going through. I feel for them so badly, there is probably nothing that will ever ease their pain.

This is so sad. When a young boy is killed in cold blood for buying skittles. What is wrong with humanity ? Horrific loss of a young life. His family must be beyond heartbroken. I can only imagine their anger and sadness. We have to come to terms with the brutal racism in this country, starting with throwing that paranoid idiot in jail for the rest of his life.

All of you are right. The police told him they would follow it up, what the blank was he doing? This is one of the reasons I have very little use for guns, they kill people. You say, guns don't kill people, but they most certainly do. The gun doesn't fly out of the holster, into the hand and fire all by itself, but again no gun, no death.

As someone who has lived in this area I have to honestly say that, there is still much racism in this area! And, this is just another prime example of it! Yes, I to would like to know, exactly how this person was able to even have a gun! I would like to know will he be charged with MURDER!! that is exactly what this WAS!! God HELP US!!! I have long argued that "Conceal and Carry" allows for vigilantism. This story is the unfortunate proof. I hope my that my home state of Illinois continues to be the ONLY state in the Union that will not pass a "Conceal and Carry" law. Until racism is eradicated, more incidents like this are bound to happen.

I am not acting like a mob, because I would never go grab Zimmerman and beat the hell out of him, and issue out my own justice. I would hope and pray the system would do that. Find the whole story, even BET is reserving judgement, telling its audience to wait to get the whole story. Remember it was George Zimmerman, the shooter, that called the police, taken in to custody at the scene (where he waited with the boy, calling for someone to help, until the police arrived), and was later released by the police.
Thank God we live in a Republic, where everyone is innocent until proven guilty, once all the facts have been presented. Some facts were left out or no know when this story was written.

Zimmerman was IN HIS CAR when he called 911... He followed the boy IN HIS CAR... Zimmerman had to GET OUT of his car to have confronted the boy, AFTER the 911 dispatcher had told him not to... The boy couldn't have been a threat until Zimmerman forced him to be,,, Martin was feet away from his home, so he would gave tried to get there...
I would be surprised if forensic evidence proves Martin was trying to get inside when he was shot... Probably in the back, unless Zimmerman got in berween him and home...

Your fears are not irrational... Zimmerman is back out on the streets... Bias on the part of the police, the district attorney, the arraignment judge or some combination thereof put him out there...

Remember Twana Brawley, the Duke Lacrosse players, the Marines in Afghanistan, and so many others where initial reports were later repudiated. It is amazing that so many here are screaming for justice by lynching Zimmerman without the whole story! Please think about and then respond if you want.

We had a case of a black man with a permit to carry and a couple of white guys tried to steal his car. He pulled his gun and told them to get back, they did and he got on his cell and called 911. While he was talking to the dispatcher they tried to rush him and he told them to get back two more times then he shot. I think he killed one and wounded the other. Luckily it was all on tape to prove he was in the right. He still had to go through a trial and while that was going on, his landlord evicted him and put all his stuff on the curb, which naturally disappeared in a matter of minutes. So when it was all over he lost his apt, his clothes and furnishings and I think, his job. This guy had a good job too. It's just terrible. He had come here from Texas I think it was and he says he's going back because there is nothing here for him anymore. It's really sad.
Well, see, he wasn't white. If he was, he would have gotten a parade.

This man is free?!?! They ran a background check on the child who was murdered?? They (the police) didn't want to ruin this man's (Zimmerman's) good name??? They have lied to the family & said that Zimmerman was never in trouble before???? And they(the family of child) now have proof that Zimmerman has been in trouble with the law before & yet this man still walks free?!?!?! AND, this happened on my Birthday!! The atty. for the boy's family did a fast background check on Zimmerman and found he was arrested in Orange County in 2005 for resisting arrest and battery of a police officer. I hope they file a wrongful death suit - so Zimmerman will pay for his stupidity for the rest of his life.
