The Utah legislature has passed an abstinence only sex education bill stressing sex should only happen between married, straight couples. They think the best place for Utah students to learn about any other kind of sex is from each other their parents.
Discussions on contraception and homosexuality are banned even if the student asks about it. They think comprehensive sex ed is best left for camp cabins at home with their parents.
Republican state Sen. Stuart Reid says, "To replace the parent in the school setting, among people who we have no idea what their morals are, we have no ideas what their values are, yet we turn our children over to them to instruct them in the most sensitive sexual activities in their lives, I think is wrongheaded."
Reid thinks that Utah students from the 8th to 12th grade should discuss their most sensitive sexual activities with anyone but their parents.
Some lawmakers are speaking out. Republican Rep. Francis Gibson says, "I would hope as we make this decision, that we won't think if we say abstinence only, that fairy dust will have been sprinkled and that teen pregnancy will no longer be a problem."
He says that the abstinence only curriculum aren’t producing results in terms of lowering STD’s or teen pregnancy rates. Democratic Sen. Gene Davis voted against the bill saying, "I believe knowledge is the most important aspect in anyone's lives. A child needs the right and correct answer."
The bill, HB363, passed through the senate with a vote 19 to 10 and is headed for Governor Gary Herber’s desk.
Maybe if we just don’t talk about him signing it he just won’t do it. Yeah, that makes sense.

This is so stupid if people don't get rid the Repug there will be turn this country into the Taliban for sure. In Wis they have a bill that will make single parent be charge with child abuse. November is a long way away god help us.
Keep them ignorant and increase un-wanted pregnancy. Un-married couples get pregnant. Sounds like dorm rules back in the day. Girls had to be in the dorm by 9:00 each night. Don't they know you can get pregnant before 9:00. Sex is not new. It is going to happen. Keep it in the dark is not going to make it go away.
Anyone can have a child, but not everyone can raise one.
COMMIES = Plain And SIMPLE = IF I Remember Correctly = THEY { gop-re-baggers } Want LESS Government Control On Americans == ????? Soooo What Is ALL Of This CRAP That THEY Are Imposing On Americans = Voter Suppression / Re-Writing The History Books About Slavery / Thwarting Woman's Rights / Re-righting The Constitution / Disableing Unions / On+On+ON !!!!!!!!! What A Bunch -O- GOMERS !!! HEIL - gop-re-baggers == FREAKIN'- NAZI's !!!!!!!!!!
Thankful, You hit the nail on the head. It amazes me how so many can attend church and read the Bible and be so blind. First God made man, then took the rib of Adam and made woman. Adam was lonely. What do they think they did play patty cake. God made two of everything to procreate and populate the earth. Again I guess they made and apt. Don"t think so! God made it simple man made it dirty and mess!! Say saw where will be major solar flares so we may have power outages and probably the computers and phones will be a mess will last for week. The largest in 5 years.
Well Mom everyone knows you can't get after 9 pm and if you drink through a straw you get less drunk! duh!
lol
What idiots out there- oops, wait- the State ranks #8 in median income in the USA, and its foreclosure rate is less than 50% of California, Michigan, Florida, Colorado and a bunch of other states.
Wonder if they have some secret to their success?
MD/MI, Your so right they want it small its called a power grab where thy controll us and treat us like dirt. I just saw and add that made me want to punch the TV. They have wasted No time in putting up the nasty adds against OBAMA! Say I have been thinking of this all day. Know how we have discussed Sanatorium bringing there dead child home. Well she his wife talked about that yesterday and I thought how strange to use this in well campaign jargon. She said we brought home to bury. All I could think was where the back yard. I cannot get the image out of my head what person brings home a child this way? Every time I see them on TV its the immage I see of them. Yes it was sad for them to loose there child but this just dose not seem right .
Pam- After reading your diatribe, I have no doubt you have decided well in your choice to back Obama.
So what --- so have I. We are against the right wing republican religious taliban being shoved down our throats. We want the wealthy paying fair taxes. We want to end billions in subsidies to oil companies and we want tax loopholes ended. America is improving from the wreck and ruin of the Bush administration and I had way too much republican war mongering and giving every benefit to those who needed no benefits. Now they are back wanting to make Medicare a voucher program and no telling what else they will do against the middle class while giving more tax cuts to the wealthy which is what Romney is going around saying right now. Santorum is a religious zealot who wants to push this country toward religiosity when everyone is not a Catholic, a Christian or even religious so we do not support them. President Obama and Biden for 2012.
Vicki- what is "fair"? Who decides it? Is 20% fair, or is it 30%, or 50%, or 70%, or 90%? What about 105%?
105 % of course [plus the4 same on savings accounts.
TC- yep- When asked- they always seem to have trouble answering the "what's fair" question. And who decides it?
With every republcan elected we get closer to theocratic rule!
Can we predict the future if a Mormons is elected to be president?
I'd say the answer is yes.
The Rep legislators must be so proud they're helping to increase the population. More cheap, child labor for the big corporations.
And Utah proudly takes a giant step backward.
You don't like it, don't go there easy enough.
DNFtt. east enough.
trafdlo, you don't seem to like us but you're still here. Why? Because this is America and you have the right to be here. Remember! You just said that yourself a couple days ago. Don't mean to be rude or anything but thought you sounded like you need to be reminded before you start the negative banter. What drives a person to want to antagonize those who think differently when it would be so much more satisfying to be validated by those who are like minded. The things you say are just an annoying black mark on the page. But, you can stay if you really want to.
Ed, I am sure there are many parents that shirk their responsibilities concerning their children but for the most part I believe parents care and provide for their children. That said, I have to agree with the concept. Our schools need to focus on Reading, Writing, Math, History, and Science. Morals need to be taught in the home. To those that would argue the point, I would say look at the correlation between the introduction of modern Sex Education in the 1960's and the increase in sexually transmitted disease and teen pregnancy starting at the same time. Prior to the adoption of liberal sex education in public school, the family, church, and community did a much better job. Modern sex education removes the shame associated with promiscuity, sexual deviants, sexually transmitted disease, as well as teen and unwed pregnancy. If the objective of modern sex education was to spread disease, increase abortions, and increase teen pregnancy, I would have to say it was successful.
Amen!!!
Is anatomy not science? As for you asertion that teen pregnancy and blah blah went up are sure that it went up or it just became more visible? I don't know for sure and honest I have zero intention of looking up because honestly I could care less, but that comes to mind...something to think about.
One could also argue that not teaching it is trying to teach a different set of morals in the school. What if I think that not teaching kids the simple, proven science of how their bodily systems function is completely foolish after all it's simple none political science.
Our children are in fact more than intelligent enough to learn and think about these issues on their all this silly culture war none sense is just removing oppurtunities for learning and opinion forming. The kids are more than smart enough to handle it we would be far better off as a society to push them a little more intellectually
Cynical, Is anatomy not science? Of course it is. I am not suggesting anatomy not be taught nor am I suggesting teaching anatomy is responsible for the increase in sexual transmitted disease, teen pregnancy, or abortion. I am suggesting there is a correlation in the introduction of modern sex education in the 1960s and significant increases in disease, teen pregnancy, and abortion.
"are sure that it went up or it just became more visible?" Between 1973 and 1979 the number of abortions doubled in the United States. In 1996 there were 1.37 abortions in the United States. I will concede that prior to its legalization in 1973 abortion records were all but none existent, but the significant increase in abortions from 1973 to 1979 supports my opinion. Remember modern sex education was introduced in 1968, five years before the abortion numbers went through the roof. As for sexually transmitted disease, data has been captured prior to and after the introduction of modern sex education. The same holds true for teen pregnancy.
"What if I think that not teaching kids the simple, prov-en science of how their bodily systems function is completely foolish after all it's simple none political science." You are talking about anatomy and biology; science. As I said science should be one of the topic taught in school. Contraception and homosexuality are moral issues and not involved with the science of how the body works.
"The kids are more than smart enough to handle it". I would much rather see classroom time devoted to the basics, as I said, reading, writing, math, history, and science vice someones opinion or moral values. Perhaps if the educational system was focused on the basics our children would be able to pass proficiency tests. As it stands right now, more Middle School students can tell you about homosexuality and alternative lifestyles that those that can read or write at their grade level.
I see ignoring the correlation between sex education and the increase in these areas in the same light as saying Obama's energy policies have no affect on the price of gasoline. Obama's prohibition on drilling on the east and west coasts, Alaska, and the Gulf as well as his stopping the Keystone Pipe Line does indeed impact the price of fuel.
Domestic oil production is at its highest in years. There is more drilling in the gulf of mexico than there ever has been, the administration has approved some 300+ drilling permits, so there are no current moratoriums. So that's already been debunked. Oil is not sold on the american market it's sold on the global market and there is no simply problem. But you will believe what you wish. Fact is the price of fuel is dependent on how much consumers are willing to pay not how much has been barrelled. So you may allow companies who have no real requirement to sell the product they acquire in america in the first place to drill baby drill and the price can still rise baby rise. Tough I know, deal with it blame big oil, they could lower the price of oil right now and still make outlandist profits.
Now what is this "modern sex education" you seem to be reffering to? Clearly you have a uniquely personal definition of what that is.
Kids are failing prociency tests, saddest part is that our tests are a joke by comparison to every other country. So the tests really aren't hard, not even close.
Next you have completely misinterprreted my position I am not aware of any places that teach kids to be gay and that is not remotely close to what I'm talking. My point is not to teach any stupid moral system gay, straight, xtian, muslim or otherwise I am saying that we need to teach the kids to argue their ideas and let them fight it out intellectually and expand their own horizons. That is what school is made for. As it stands now we have decided to pretend like topics people have more than one opinion on can not be discussed at all, there is no logic to this. This is about teaching any opinion this is about ignoring things because people will disagree....and that is exactly why it should be debate by the students. This is about getting them thinking nothing more.
No, it just makes students a lot more informed and better prepared about the consequences of their sexual behavior. Then they will be smarter and will know that they must act responsibly. Many in my generation would have been better forewarned rather than just experimenting as young people will. Abstinence only does not work.
Cynical, While there are 10 more Oil Rigs now than prior to the PB incident, only 34 of the 125 rigs are actually operating. There are 26 shallow water rigs in the Gulf, 11 less than before the PB incident.
Modern sex education was introduced in 1968, prior to that little instruction in the area was provided.
I agree with the absence of quality in the proficiency tests, but that simply compounds the problem. After all if they can't pass what we have how will they ever pass a valid proficiency examination.
I would agree with your last point, if the students could read and write. As it is right now an emphases on the ability to argue an idea is moot. I would also argue that the typical public school teacher leans towards the liberal side which inhibits open discussion or debate. This web site is a good example of the pressure that are applied to descending points of view. If teachers could leave their personal views out of the instruction period perhaps the students could have that debate, but that is not going to happen. I don't know if you recall the episode of ED during the Wisconsin Teacher walkout in which an elementary school teacher said her second grade student compared the walkout to the Janitor Strike in LA and the civil rights movement. I said at the time seven year old children would have little knowledge if any of the three incidents and that they lacked the analytical ability to make such comparisons. I also said if such discussion were held in the classroom, it was nothing more than a teacher imposing her views on the students. Such practices are not conducive to open discussion and debate in the classroom.
This is a brilliant excerpt from your post Cynical. Spot on.
My only comment regarding Utah is that this is a state level problem and the Federal Government needs to stay the hell out of it.
Morals should be taught everywhere. Schools shouldn't have moral codes?
If you don't like Utah laws don't live there, simple.
Next why not do a story about the state of Illinois going broke, you know the state run by unions & democrats, with one of the highest tax rates in the country.....
If you don't like this blog, don't post here. Easy enough.
Aren't you right-wingers always complaining "they're taking away our freedoms and expanding government!"?
Well, Utah just banned free speech about sex and homosexuality, and expanded their power to stop people from talking about it.
Doesn't this bother you? Or do you like that kind of censorship and expansion of government when it's something you agree with?
Chris, Are you saying Utah passed additional legislation or are you suggesting the state government does not have the authority to establish school cirriculum? Do you really believe adding or removing an item from the authorized school curriculum equates to the suspension of the First Amendment? Who's Free Speech is being denied; the Teachers? Please explain how a curriculum change infringes on anyones right of Free Speech?
-Expansion of government
-Censorship of free speech
It's easy if you...read it.
Chris, So in your opinion a state is not free to develop school curriculum. If the state reduced the curriculum wouldn't that mean a reduction in government rather than an increase in government. After all the result of the legislation is a reduction in government intrusion. As for censorship, who is being censored? Teachers are hired to teach a curriculum, not to teach whatever they want. Students at least K-12 are forced to attend school and are subject to that same curriculum. Do you think students should dictate the curriculum?
I continually hear how the teachers are concerned about their students yet their actions often harm the students. For example teachers would rather maintain their pay and benefits and reduce the overall number of teachers resulting in a higher ratio of students to teachers. Does that benefit the student or the teacher? In this case their is a direct correlation between the introduction of modern sex education and an increase in teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, and abortion. I would think with a teacher's analytical ability they would draw the same the conclusion; modern sex education is harming their students and they would support the legislation.
Also, do you consider a school's policy mandating the class be in season at specific times some type of infringement on a teacher or student's freedoms? Perhaps you consider requiring a teacher to be present in the classroom as a violation of the Forth Amendment in that their freedom to come and go has been suspended by the government without Probable Cause or the issuance of a warrant.
I never saw so much bull@!$%# in so small a space.
Every single study has shown that with sex education unwanted pregnancies and abortion go down.
Comprehensive Sex Education Might Reduce Teen Pregnancies, Study Suggests
ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2008) — New research suggests that comprehensive sex education might lead to less teen pregnancy, and there are no indications that it boosts the levels of sexual intercourse or sexually transmitted diseases.
Teens who received comprehensive sex education were 60 percent less likely to report becoming pregnant or impregnating someone than those who received no sex education.

Effective Sex Education
(formally titled "Sex Education: Programs and Curricula")
Each year, U.S. teens experience as many as 850,000 pregnancies, and youth under age 25 experience about 9.1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs).[1,2] By age 18, 70 percent of U.S. females and 62 percent of U.S. males have initiated vaginal sex.[3] Comprehensive sex education is effective at assisting young people to make healthy decisions about sex and to adopt healthy sexual behaviors.[4,5,6,7] No abstinence-only-until-marriage program has been shown to help teens delay the initiation of sex or to protect themselves when they do initiate sex.[8,9,10,11] Yet, the U.S. government has spent over one billion dollars supporting abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.[12] Although the U.S. government ignores it, adolescents have a fundamental human right to accurate and comprehensive sexual health information.[8,11]
http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/publications/450?task=view
And apparently, reducing knowledge is reducing government. In that case, I assume you want a very ignorant populace. Which is in keeping with the Republicans desire to have an easily manipulated, uneducated country.
You also seem quite capable of ignoring printed words that you don't want to see. So, I will reprint them for you:
Discussions on contraception and homosexuality are banned even if the student asks about it.
Now think very hard. If you are banning people from asking questions, what are you doing?
Come on, even you can figure this out.
Chris, Your argument is much like the "Man Caused Global Warming" argument. You base your conclusions not on all available evidence but only on evidence that supports your opinion. The data used to justify Global Warming excluded available data from prior to 1850. Prior to 1850 there was the Little Ice Age a period of excessive cooling and the Medieval Climate Optimum a period of excessive warmth. The temperature ranges of both periods were significant higher and lower than temperatures today, but their inclusion in the Man Caused Global Warming debate didn't support the desired result.
I said there is a correlation between the introduction of modern sex education in 1968 and the significant increases in teen pregnancy, abortion, and sexually transmitted disease. You attempt to defend sex education and counter my argument by using only selected data. Try using all the available data.
I would suggest that the data supports the opinion that if sex education were removed from schools or if it were limited to what was taught prior to 1968 the occurrences of teen pregnancy's, sexually transmitted disease, and abortion would go down. The data also supports the conclusion that parents did a much better job teaching morals to their children prior to the government inserting itself in the role of the parent; there was indeed less teen pregnancy, less sexually transmitted disease, and yes much less abortion.
Yeah, all those coat-hanger abortions never happened.
To be honest, you are guilty of what you accuse me of. But that's nothing new. You live in an ancient fantasy world of "things were better in the old days." Because people kept their mouths shut and unpleasant things were hidden.
Slaves were actually better off on plantations, right? They didn't complain, and they had work. One of our most illustrious rightys on this blog actually says slavery was better for black families than equal rights. You two would hit it off.
7 billion people and counting. Yep, abstinence is certainly working.
Chris, Slaves, Really? I said there was no data concerning abortions prior to 1973 when it became legal. I also said the abortion rate doubled between 1973 and 1979. I have serious doubts there were 1 million abortions a year prior to 1973, but there is no data. There is however data from 1973 and beyond, and that data supports my conclusion. There is also data on sexually transmitted disease and teen pregnancy. These two areas increased dramatically after the introduction of modern sex education.
So your attitude is ignorance solves everything? Less information is the way to solve problems?
So you think teenagers have to be taught to masturbate, they wouldn't figure it out on their own?
How do you think sex started, anyway? In a classroom?
And the article isn't about abortions, it's about sex education. I already showed you the data that says sex education decreases teen pregnancy. Your reaction was to dismiss it.
By the way, I have data that says your data isn't true.
Chris, It appears you believe sex is a natural occurance and classroom instruction is not required. I agree.
I understand the article wasn't about abortion, but I also believe the abortion rate is a direct result of sex education.
I did not dismiss your data, I simply suggested you use all the available data, not just the studies that supported your opinion. You believe in Global Warming, don't you?
I am fairly certain you could find data that contradicts my data, if not you can simply create it.
2ez,
do you know how many kids are mis-informed about sex? almost everyone of them. i see no benefit for kids living in ignorance about sex.
the reason it should be taught in school is that most parents are embarassed to talk to their kids about sex. decades ago when i got my first period, i didn't know what it was, and i have talked to many women who experienced the same thing. if i had been educated in school, i would have known. there are some basics that absolutely need to be taught. PARENTS ARE NOT RELIABLE TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT SEX.
now kids can get information about sex on the computer, but mostly the information they get comes from their friends.
the benefit of having sex education in schools is that it would be presented in the same way health or biology is, as a "matter-of-fact", and not something that shouldn't be talked about. but the repubs think we should continue to discuss sex "behind closed doors", "in quiet rooms".
did you know that tight underwear/jeans cause erectile dysfunction, and that masturbation causes blindness?
these myth's were started by people who think sex is "dirty", and is the main reason why repubs adhere to the mantra, "ignorance is bliss".
Suzette I was thing same place as you. I kiss a boy and through I was pregnant that sound crazy but true. I start when I was 10 1/2 and scared to death mother said get over it.
Suzette and Palm,So some parents don't teach their children about sex, so the school must assume the role from all parents. Will some parents abuse and neglect their children following your logic the government should assume the role from all parents.
My child is my responsibility. I am responsible for teaching my child moral values. Modern Sex Education in school infringes on my right as a parent.
Sex is a nurtural occurence in all animals, and a class in anotomy addressing the body functions is fine and reasonable. Sex itself doesn't need to be taught nor do other areas such as homosexuality, alternative lifestyles, or contraception. These are areas that should be reserved for the moral teachers of our society, the parents.
2ez,
so some parents don't teach their children about sex...
this is the norm, most good parents simply feel uncomfortable talking about sex, they are embarassed, and therefore they don't do it. and many parents like you, who think you want to do it, don't inform your children very well. i would say as proof of that: look at how ignorant our children are about sex. look at all the young girls that are pregnant, and can't and don't want to care for babies, babies that are abused, or thrown in a dumpster immediately after giving birth. it is important to give our children the information they need by someone who knows how to give them the information.
i hate to be the one to inform you, but sex is also a normal, natural body function. you think that in order to keep our society a "moral" one, that we need to keep our kids ignorant.
i am slackjawed that you would even admit to keeping sex, contraception and homosexuality a secret, something to be discussed behind closed doors, IN QUIET ROOMS.
i understand that you believe differently than i do about sex, contraception and homosexuality. our children need to be informed so they know what is happening as their bodies change. in regard to homosexuality; homosexuality is a FACT of life. if we continue to keep this stuff behind closed doors, homosexuals will continue to be abused-our kids need to see us loving and accepting everyone without judgement.
how long do you want to protect your children from the real world? it will be much easier for them if we educate them about sex, alternative lifestyles and homosexuality and contraception. ignorance breeds a judgemental attitude and hate and bigotry toward things they do not understand.
which i find interesting, since i am pretty sure you all present these things to your children as a moral or character defect, as something for which you will go to HELL.
2ez,
my child is my responsibility. i am responsible for teaching my child moral values. sex education infringes on my right as a parent.
i am beginning to understand how the repubs "moral compass" works. you don't want anyone else educating your child about sex, but its OK to dictate to women about their reproductive systems, and what they CAN and CAN'T do. repubs feel that women need to be taught REPUB VALUES.
you don't want certain areas "regulated", but regulating a woman's god-given uterus? it appears you don't have a problem with that.
as someone who doesn't want the gov't interfering in their child's education of sex, a very personal thing to you, its OK to regulate a mandated "vaginal probe" rape?+
Suzette, you are talking to a single individual with the beliefs formed and based on a single individuals life and experience, not the Republican Party or for that matter a spokesperson for conservatives.
I have my beliefs and the right to express them and as a parent the right to bring my child up with what I believe are good moral values. If you would like to know what I as an individual believe about abortion, here you go. Life is precious and as such it should be protected. We must as individuals, not governments, protect the weak and defenceless. Who more in need of our compassion that one that has no ability whatsoever to defend themselves. I don't believe a women or a man has the right to terminate a life of a child. There are those that would argue that a fetus is not a child or that it is not life, I would say to them I disagree. I would no more support a parent's right to kill an unborn child than I would a parent's right to kill a two year old child. Abortion is very simply wrong and it contradict not only the teaching of Christ but natural laws as well. The same holds true for contraception, but as I see it to a much lesser degree. Contraception contradicts the natural drive to reproduce. There is a big difference between preventing a life and terminating life that already exists.
I recently saw a news story where a mother lost both her legs in her attempts to protect her two children. I saw this as nothing more than a mother's natural instinct. While watching the segment I remembered interviews with females questioning Sarah Palin's decision to keep her child with Down Syndrome. At the time I questioned the absence of the natural instinct to protect a child in these women. It appears to me, we as a society have overcome our natural drives and instincts, replacing them with a philosophy of self indulgence.
An unborn child did not create itself, it was created by others. It made no conscious decision to exists nor is it in a position to protect itself. People should be accountable for the decisions they make and the lifestyles they lead, not the child that results from those decisions.
2ez4u2c2-
You seem to have a real need to fit me into a category you can easily dismiss. Ergo, your comments about Global Warming and the Fourth Amendment and Probable Cause, none of which have anything at all to do with the subject under discussion.
Not to mention your insult about "creating data" that disagrees with yours.
The fact is, I cited data that I used to inform my opinion. You, on the other hand, merely stated unsupported opinions without any citation as to where you got it from.
All you have done is demonstrate your narrow-mindedness and your inability to accept people who disagree with you.
As they say, ignorance is bliss. You seem to be particularly blissful.
Chris, So now I am ignorant. Good one. I guess it is better than so of the name calling here. You could of said I was a racist or a bigot. Great debate tool, name calling. So much for tolerance and understanding different points of view.
You really are an expert at only seeing what you want to see.
There were a whole lot of sentences above that one, about your insults.
Try reading my above post slowly, so each word sinks in.
Chris, The CDC reports that in 1960 there were 259,00 new cases of Gonorrhea and that the number of new cases grew to 600,000 in the 1970, and to over 1 million in the 1980. The CDC reports the number of new cases at approximately 350,000 each of the years 2000, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The CDC also reports 745,000 abortions in 1973, 1 million in 1975, 1.5 million in 1980, 1.6 million in 1985 and 1990, 1.3 million in 1995, 1999, and 2000. The number dropped to 1.2 million in 2004 and 2005, the last year of reported data. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a frequent contributor to the CDC unintended teen pregnancies in 1960 were about 15 out of 1,000 teens, a number that was constant for the prior decade. In the Mid and Late 1960's the number started to increase, doubling by 1970. There was a steady increase through the following decades to 2000, in which the number grew to 80 per 1000 teens.
Like I said earlier, if the objective of sex education was to increase teen pregnancy, increase sexually transmitted disease, and increase the number of abotrions, I would say they have met their objective.
kochroach alert. I love Ellens new JCP ads.
Well Utah, We are rolling out the good old days. Except they have new twist. Just google sex or ask a friend. Do they think kids are stupid? My good gravy they know more about sex than we did. They are more informed and make better decisions. With the assault on women from the GOP and the church we will see pregnancy go up, back room abortions and teen pregnancy rise along with STDS. We cannot take all the progress we have made over the years and turn it back to dark ages.
Good points Pam. There is such a fine line to furthering the shame associated with sex and the woman's body to the next generation of little girls. Kids are going to experiment whether it's by themselves, with the opposite sex, the same sex or the internet. Those closet conservatives that keep the television in their bedroom to watch porn on after the kids go to bed. What are the chances that their children will watch those videos when no one's around. There is a way to embrace this subject without promoting promiscuity.
pam
you have always struck me as having good sense and values. The facts are that 1 out of every 5 pregnancies are aborted and the numbers are abut 1.2 million a year each and every year counting ab0ut 50 million since they were legalized.fully 50% of all pregnancies are out of wedlock. I have a hard time believing someone with your values thinks that is OK. Tell the truth do you? Just wondering.
WOW LOL
Expect more of the same if Mitt the Mormon is POUS! This from a bunch that believe in polygamy! What NEXT???
We are now the Divided States of America!!!! Good job GOP!
Amen Brah !!!!!!!!!
Good to talk with you again brother! I always enjoy talking with you!
We are going to take GOP (Garbage Oppressive Party) to the curb in 2012
Roger That!
good one xxx ooo
Greed Over Patriotism
"De oppresso liber"
a huge step backwards. Straight/gay/asexual/transgender is and always has been present--it is just the way a person is. with this type of "education" there will be increased pregnancy, increased curiousity by our young, increased STDs, back room abortions. it takes TWO to create a life. abstinence will never work--tell someone no and they want to do it more. the gop apparantly thinks we are stupid--we will remember their radical "ideas" in november which cannot come soon enough. with gop candidate trying to force their radical ideas on us and hate-mongers like rush heaven help us!!!!!
Boycott Mormons! LOL!
I completely agree kids do, have and always will do it anyway. It's like with drugs like pot which suposedly evil and apocalyptic, islamic if your republican, etc. and guess what they go out and try and find out how the world actually works and that society has lying to them for years
We will better far better off when we leave no stone unturned in our children's academic and intellectual discovery we waste far too much time assuming the kids can't and won't ever think for themselves. Common sense has and will always dictate that when we are educated we always make better choices. Don't remove the oppurtunities for learning as we do now, increase it.
Indeed!
cc
do you have kids> grand kids> What if any boundaries of behavior did you set for them? If no kids would you set boundaries for say a daughter if you had one??
TC,
that is absolutely not what CC said above, but i will let him/her answer for him/herself in regard to boundries for children.
you are saying that educating our children about sex is "not setting boundries" for them?
kids don't always listen to their parents.
i would much rather have an informed child, and i did, a daughter, who did not have sex until she met her husband.
i made no statement of opinion asking s question is not an opinion it is a question. Here is why i asked a quetion I wanted to know what CC really did as opposed to cc opinion sometimes people argue a pont they would never do in reality.
I am getting whiplash from the way the Republicans change their mind, just today I watched M. Bashir's guest talking about the forced "vaginal inspection" - a tactic used successfully during the Witch Hunts of the Middle Ages, as providing a woman with all of the best information before deciding to abort a fetus (as if women aborted just for chuckles and because it's just so much fun) and now Utah decides that information is really not that good and should be kept undercover (no pun intended)...
Republicans have finally mastered the art of eating their cake and saving it too - that must be because they just have so much more of it than others...
Did they already tell women that they cannot work outside of the home because they may get pregnant? Or did that already happen and I just missed it?
You know what, I think this law is foolish. You can't bury your head in the sand and just assume things will work out. I also think teaching kids about the dangers and responsibilities of sex should fall to the parents at some point. Either way, abstinence is the smart and responsible option. That message should still be promoted. Show these kids ever horrible and disgusting disease that can result from unprotected sex. Make them watch a woman giving birth. Things like that will have more impact than this ridiculous legislation.
That being said, people on here complaining about the Mormon religion are reprehensible. I'm not a Mormon. I have no desire to be a Mormon. That doesn't give me the right to insult their values and beliefs. Get over yourselves and act like adults. You're acting as bad as Limbaugh with behavior like that. It's the kind of tactic he would utilize. It's worth the effort to take the high road.
Well done Utah. Utah is moving forward to the 20th century, year 1912. By the way, do you think the kids won’t hear about SEX! WOW are you naïve! Wouldn’t it be better for the kids to learn the truth at school rather then half truths and partial facts passed on by their peers? As far as their parents teaching them all about sex, good luck. Their parents would have to build a wall around their kids, turn off the TV, shut down the internet and stop all contact between the sexes. And then explain to their kids the facts of life, assuming they understand anatomy, and know all about promiscuity, sexual deviants, sexually transmitted disease and contraception. All this while suppressing the right to free speech. Real Bright Utah!
The Mormon Taliban strikes again.
Case in point. Thanks for the input, Rush Jr.
Typical right wing hope and pray for abstinence which will not happen when the male and female hormones and young love happen. It is much smarter and wiser to give them information that will keep them from getting pregnant with information about contraception and information about boys and their behavior of pushing girls for sex and not the other way around.
I'm a man, and I've been seduced a number of times by women.
Not that it was very hard, but women aren't all the shy little angels you make them out to be.
Not that I'm complaining.
I am not talking about women here. I am talking about teenage girls. As young women get a bit of experience then of course they may be the aggressor if they see a good looking guy but that is completely different and you are bragging in a way.
In high school, my first time was with a girl who wasn't a virgin. I was uptight about not knowing what to do, so I said I had a cold and I didn't want to give it to her. She replied, "You're not getting out of here until you ball me." Verbatim quote.
Some teenage girls like to blame the boy, so they don't have to admit that they wanted to do it. They feel that's expected of them.
So Vicki to be clear the only thing you would require of your 16 year old daughter is that she be informed? No moral absolutes just do it but know how to do it right? Do I have that correct? No judgement from me just trying to understand your position.
Chris
Tell me you thought so much of her you married her.
No. I'm one of those rare people that didn't marry his high school sweetheart.
Did you?
The United States is going to be renamed Dictator States. Some states have taken the lock off of your front door and marched straight into your family room; told this is the way it is. After they left the family room they kicked the bedroom door open. Do I need to tell you what they said as you and your spouse were minding your own business? What is it with these people and sex. Should they not be worried about real problems instead of SEX. All these laws regarding sex. Well that tells you what they have on their minds. Remember these people were elected to see about your well-being in your state but all you have gotten is supposedly problems with women and now sex education.
gladys,
well said!
they are obsessed with sex, and with OTHER people having it.
they WANT women who are having an abortion to be "educated" through the mandated rape of a "vaginal probe", but they want their kids to remain ignorant about sex.
This bill is really current in its thinking, is may be indicative, of the political times, Mitt Romney would likely support this bill since if signals to the conservative voters supporting other candidates that in the future how he will guide his presidential administration in more than one aspect.
He will accept the religious source of this bills 'Act of God' sentiment, he will support legislation to discontinue the US Department of Education, and further the goal of reducing State’s participation in education, and force the acceptance of local theology based education.
The Mormon's Utah Mandate, unusual approach to using religion is to add to religious scripture, and selective choose the sermon of the day, and only yield to the rule of law when it is convenient to do so. The Utah Mandate's daily guidance is mystery that cannot be figured, and you cannot answer the question if asked – it's a strategy.
Like the defensive nature of the porcupine’s needle, it slow works its way into doomed and dying creature, causing innocent death to aggressors – it's a strategy.
The theological State of Utah will set the example that Mitt Romney dare not defy, thoroughly sorely tempted: If with sincere wink and nod he ignores this Utah Mandate – it's a strategy, if with head fake and tacit agreement he agrees with it the compliant press will soon forget, it’s not news – it's a strategy, if he enters the circle of ultimate power, the reeds of opposition posturing will lay down, and the strangest form of federal government, or no government at all will prevail, is this looks impossible believe it is impossible – it's a strategy. In the end there can be no future and that’s the tragedy – it's too is a strategy.
In these certain and bad times, with every distraction, ask the question is this a distraction? Answer the question in the affirmative, and then ask ‘what is the real issue that is hiding behind the distraction?’ There is a real issue so why the distraction – it’s a strategy.
Roseann would not like this!!
This is all religious fanatical bull@!$%#. Yea keeping kids in the dark about sex, homosexuality and birth control is really going to solve Utahs high teen rate pregnancy. They were already limiting sex education in the classroom big time. Honestly I think the republicans want people dumb and ignorant so they can easily lead them by the nose and stay in power. A bunch of dumbasses in Utah elected these morons. Says a lot about the education level and ignorance of those who voted for them, huh? Stupid is as stupid does and elects stupid
Honestly I hope like hell sometime in the future we have a viable presidential candidate who is aethist I am so sick of these religious nuts in positions of power.
Repbulicans can't think past the bedroom. What's that tell ya? No real platform to run on? Really? That's it? SMH.
