Rush Limbaugh and his vile, sexist attacks on women has found a new target.
No, spending three days insulting Georgetown Law School student Sandra Fluke for her advocacy for access to female contraception was apparently not enough for Rush.
This time the target is Tracie McMillan, 35, author of the new book The American Way of Eating, which argues that good quality food isn't available to poor, urban people.
McMillan researched the book by working undercover for months as a laborer on a California farm, two Walmarts in Michigan and an Applebee's restaurant in New York.
Tracie McMillan goes underdcover where American's get their food and examines the reality of our country's food industry.
Yesterday, Limbaugh referred to McMillan as a "babe" and an "authorette," slamming her as another young single white woman posing a threat to freedom.
Limbaugh's main point was that government shouldn't be involved in the distribution of quality food to urban neighborhoods.
"I don't want you to doubt me on this. There's not a war on women," Limbaugh said. "There's a war on freedom. And anything that the government does not have its hands in is the focus and the target for this regime -- and now it's food and the distribution of food."
Sounds like a typical right-wing defense of allowing corporations to do anything they want, even at the expense of the general public and/or consumers.
But then Limbaugh just couldn't resist his sexist impulses.
"What is it with all of these young single white women, overeducated -- doesn't mean intelligent," he said. "For example, Tracie McMillan, the author of this book, seems to be just out of college and already she has been showered with awards.
McMillan, who lives in Brooklyn, New York, said she spent most of yesterday afternoon responding to questions after Limbaugh's rant.
"It's fairly bizarre that someone would criticize my work simply because I'm female," she told Detroit Free Press. She said she felt like Limbaugh had suggested "that a woman shouldn't go to school."
The silver lining? The publicity should do wonders for her book sales.

I try not to judge a book by his cover......but I am. Just look at lush and the condition of his health that you can get a view of from the outside. He would be one of the people that might profit by reading this book...

I don't understand all the talk of "limiting our freedoms." I never feel imprisoned. I've never been told I can't do anything I want. The only time I notice the government is in April. The rest of the time, it's pretty unnoticeable.

OK, I'm willing to concede that Rush isn't a comedian. He makes me laugh sometimes, but I don't think that's his intent. He's a performer. An entertainer. I think that's what he tells the IRS on his returns. He is by no means a political common 'tater. He does little or no research, and generally doesn't know what he's talking about. He is, I think, attempting to shock, but without the success of Howard Stern, especially since Howard generally has a clue.

Keith Oberman made a pledge tonight to stop saying bad things about people because such talk does not belong in our political discourse. I wish all commentators and bloggers and candidates would make a similar pledge. We can discuss the issues without defaming those we disagree with.
Has anyone noticed that President Obama does not engage in personal attacks. When he refutes one of the Republican's claims, he just refutes the claim; he does not attack and in most cases does not even name the person whose claim he is refuting, as in his speech today when he rebuted claims that a candidate would have gas at $2.50 a gal. if he were President. We all knew he was talking about Newt, but the President did not attack Newt as a person, just his outrageous claim.
You know what, I can honestly say as a registered Republican that Limbaugh was completely out of line. His language was inflammatory and it speaks to the lowest common denominator in the party as a whole. He had no right to insult that woman like he did because she expressed views that contradicted his own.
That said, if you're really worried about contraception, there is a fairly simple solution to the whole situation that's actually free and has always been free: keep it in your pants. If anyone of either gender is responsible enough to worry about the consequences, they are responsible enough to choose to not have sex. If they choose to have sex, they should deal with the consequences of that choice. When did personal responsibility become such a burden to people? Men and women have been dealing with these issues from time immemorial. Why is it now supposed to be the responsibility of the state or a health care system there to ensure your very survival to chip in if you want to make a choice like this?
It's the same argument with Viagra and Cialis. Those are not life saving drugs. They are a luxury for those that have an embarrassing but ultimately survivable condition. Why should my insurance premiums be paying something like $10 a pill for Rush to get his little blue helper? Spend that money on someone's chemo and leave things that are a matter of personal choice up to the individual to pay for.
John, you're at least coherant. Thanks for that. And I don't disagree completely, but...this is the American Health Care System, or how it works anyway. I don't really feel that I am sacrificing a penny of my premiums to someone elses needs or desires. I pay in and I get coverage for what I need. The larger the ins. company the more people contribute and the more coverage is provided. I like my coverage whether I use birth control or not (at my age). I get meds from my dermatologist that are considered cosmetic and are considered non-formulary and I pay a larger co-pay for them. Some things from the derm. dr. are covered though. I guess I'm saying that as our society has evolved (and I'm not talking about evolution), I'm talking about the natural progression that creates change, from our own heritage, from other's, etc. Most of it is what the people want and I really can't see us actually regressing. With respect and impathy for those who are uncomfortable with these enormous changes it really isn't realistic to try to hold back the waters in a raging river. But for the Grace of God, there go I. I just have to trust that the God of my understanding is guiding me in the direction he/she would have me go to do the greatest good. That's all. And I think we'll all be okay, unless we fight it. The trouble with the just say no argument is that it is usually the woman who has to say no. If society would put equal emphasis on the men to not ask for sex outside marriage or even in marriage when the couple cannot afford another child, I would say it is a good argument, but it just does not work that way. (I am 71 and do not need birth control pills and I had to say no many times.)
As someone who has always been very healthy and has never needed medical treatment that I could not pay for, I understand how healthy people do not want to have to pay for health insurance because what they pay for usually goes to someone else. But I support the Affordable Care Act and pay into Medicare Part B because one never knows when one might need it, and I have friends and family who do. What does gall me is when I do need something and my insurance, which I have been paying into, does not cover what I need -- usually some sort of preventive care. What the AFC act does is tell the insurance companies that they have to pay for what their policy holders need and not just what the insurance companies want to pay.
Just about every organized religion and social norm in modern society teaches abstinence until marriage for both genders. Or at least until you're in a committed relationship. Whether the people listen is a matter of personal accountability. That's the part that sticks with me. It's not whether the birth control is out there or even what it costs. It's that at some point people need to say, "You're an adult. If you know what will happen you can deal with the consequences of your actions without a crutch." I make very little money. I still manage to budget myself to purchase condoms as I need them and have them on hand because I know that I am responsible for my own actions. I would never ask someone to help me do that.
And I have no problem with affordable health care. As someone with a pre-existing condition I am grateful for that particular reform to go through. I just don't see why everyone else's premiums should be higher to pay for this woman's contraceptives, or a man's condoms, or Rush Limbaugh's Viagra (which he has publicly admitted to using) when nobody needs to have sex to survive. It is by no means a physical need. Having sex is a choice. Let's all be adults and deal with the weight of that choice as individuals.

Yes, as is appropriate, there is controversy about the talk-show thing's statements (I refuse to address him by his name or with the word 'man', because he is not) however, putting that aside, bottom line, this is NOT about contraception per say, nor is it about having or not having personal responsibility. It is about contraceptive pills, but is not necessarily about controlling the population, or controlling pregnancy. If you have not listened to/read what this entire issue is really about, and if you just listened to that talk-show thing spew his ignorance and hatred, then I must assume that is why you have addressed this topic in this manner. I do agree with you on one thing; Viagra and Cialis. They have not been proven to pertain to anything life-saving or a must-have type of med and if there were anything near to gender equality in this country, they would not be covered by insurance. Contraceptive pills however, have been proven to be a medical-must-have and life-saving to thousands of women with different types of medical issues. Then there comes the 'equality' issue. Since the FDA approved Pfizer's Viagra for men in 1998, we have witnessed a revolution in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction. Years later, the 43% of American women who suffer from sexual dysfunction still lack an FDA-approved medication, by no means due to a lack of introduction of them to the FDA by many pharmaceutical companies. These, the very same meds that have not been approved by the FDA have been approved in Canada, England, Australia and other developed countries throughout the world. Since the approval of Viagra by the FDA (remember Bob Dole's commercial!?) the majority of health plans in our country have covered prescriptions for this drug. Medicaid has provided coverage of this drug since 1998. I could go on and on, about inequalities, but I won't, anyone with half a brain would get this point.
Here's the thing. The "Protestant work ethic" is now the corporate tool to justify and promote Social Darwinism and Limbaugh is the standard bearer. Women, by virtue of their deeper understanding of the need to care for others by their biological imperative, are obviously going to be the ones to stand in the way of this kind of "sink or swim" ideology. Limbaugh's $56 million a year is a fee for rallying the battle cry of his corporate political keepers

I find it interesting that so many people here want Rush thrown off the air for what he said. I would like to as you if you think that Ed Schultz should also be thrown off the air for calling conservative radio show host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut" and a "talk slut." And Laura has never complained that others should pay for her contraceptives. Please tell all, what is the difference in what either said?
The difference Glen, is that Ed apologized the very next day to Laura, he apologized VERBALLY, on air, on national television, in person and he did not even have to read a script. His apology was sincere and heart felt, and his apology was 9 minutes long with the camera solely on him, on his face. In his 9 minute sincere apology, he admitted he used vile & inappropriate language, said he was wrong, and that what he did was uncalled for. He apologized to Ms Ingram by saying her full name and by asking her for her forgiveness. He said he takes full responsibility for what he said and that he would never utter those words again. He said he was ashamed of himself. He then VOLUNTARILY took himself off-air for a week - without pay. You see Glen, the difference is that Ed is a man, and he manned-up to his actions and he manned-up to his words. He said he was wrong, more than once, and never, not for a heartbeat did his words come off as being contrite or anything but real & sincere and most importantly from his heart. There was none of this, 'wrong choice of words' crap, there was none of this apologizing with written words (all of two sentences) on a website. There was none of this continuous berating and carrying on for THREE days as there was with that insecure, neanderthal. Ed made ONE comment, one time and then he immediately took the proper action to his own behavior and did the right thing, did it in a timely manner, and not only apologized profusely to Ms Ingraham, but also apologized to his listeners. He did this without being under ANY pressure or threat whatsoever from his sponsors or for that matter without being under any pressure from anyone. That's the difference Glen. Do you get it now?
