"Satan has his sights set" on the U.S. and "the Father of Lies" is using vice to go after the nation's great institutions.
These comments were made by radical Rick Santorum August 29, 2008, to a group of students at Ave Maria University (AMU), a private Catholic university in southwest Florida founded by Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan.
They surfaced six days ago thanks to the good people at RightWingWatch.org.
"This is not a political war at all. This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war," Santorum said. "And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age. There is no one else to go after other than the United States."
Satan, Santorum said, has been "attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition." Santorum citied academia, the church, pop culture and politics and government as the first four institutions to fall.
"Satan attacks all of us, all of our institutions," according to Santorum, but the place he has been "most successful and first successful" in attacking was academia by exploiting the "pride of smart people."
"He attacked them at their weakest, that they were, in fact, smarter than everybody else and could come up with something new and different," Santorum said. "Pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they're smart."
Then, Santorum said, Satan attacked the church and "mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."
He said Satan then successfully attacked popular culture.
"Whether its sensuality of vanity of the famous in America, they are peacocks on display and they have taken their poor behavior and made it fashionable," he said. "The corruption of culture, the corruption of manners, the corruption of decency is now on display whether it's the NBA or whether it's a rock concert or whether it's on a movie set."
After that, politics and government "were next to fall."
"People in political life get elected by ordinary folks from lots of places all over the country where the foundations of this country are still strong," said Santorum. "So while we may certainly have had examples, the body politic held up fairly well up until the last couple of decades, but it is falling too."
Santorum, who has risen to the top of national and state polls of Republican presidential candidates, is under scrutiny for several recent comments, that President Obama's environmental policies are grounded in a "phony theology...not found in the Bible," comparing Obama to Hitler, suggesting that Obama's health care law promotes abortion and his calls to end federal and state funding of public education, among others.
But how many other gems like this one from 2008 are out there, waiting to surface?

Bob McDonnell and how he had written this thesis in college about women's rights, homosexuals, pretty much all the stuff Santorum's been saying, only this guy is just as bad and maybe worse than Rick. It's just unbelievable what these guys want to do. When he ran for Gov. this thesis was brought up and he swore up and down his views had changed. He lied through his teeth (big shock there!). The minute he got elected he started trying to get all this crazy stuff passed. Megan McCain was on there discussing it and she said it scares her to death. I attend a Missionary Baptist church I have been a member for 10 years. I love my pastor, he has counseled me when I lost family members. He has prayed with me when I was ill. But, I do not agree with every sermon he preach every Sunday; for instance he preached a sermon one Sunday that says "Women are not suppose to be preachers". I fervently disagree. I believe a woman can do anything she want to do and that includes standing in the pulpit and preach. ! Yes! anyone can sit through a sermon and not agree with the sermon being preached at that time.
