February 8, 2012 - Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) came to the House Floor to respond to Newt Gingrich, who has begun calling President Obama the "Food Stamp President."
Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) eviscerated the food stamp president on the floor of the house yesterday, but it's not who Newt Gingrich says it is.
It's not President Obama Gutierrez is taking to task, it's George W. Bush. Representative Gutierrez is right to point out that nearly half a million more people signed up for food assistance programs under President Bush than Obama.
He's also right that the most of food stamp recipients are either children or the elderly and that the majority of people are people on food stamps are white.
Maybe instead of going in front of the NAACP, Newt Gingrich should go back the the floor of the house whenever Representative Gutierrez in speaking again. He might learn something.

That was the most eye opening speeches I have ever listened to. That is the only issue where I think both of the Bush presidents were correct and showed some compassion for the poor people of our nation. My question to Mr. Gingrich is why it only bothers him when a very intelligent black president follows the lead of two Republican presidents?

I think Newt need to go back to the Holy Father and ask forgiveness for being a bold face liar, or does he think that was taking care of when he ask for forgiveness for cheating on wife number one with the woman who became wife number two, then cheating on wife number two with the woman who became wife number three.
Congressman Gutierrez's presentation was good, the Bushes enjoyed calling themselves "Compassionate Conservatives", a term I personally resented. They both had a huge liberal streak that most conservatives preferred to ignore because they were pro business.
What was left out is that there are more on welfare, including food stamps, than at any time since the 30s, and the liberal policies of the last 2 presidents and the Democratic Congress did it. It was a dark time in our history, thank goodness conservatives took the House in 2010!

Whites make up 72.3% of the population...and make up 61% of the people receiving food stamps.
Blacks make up 12.6% of the population...and make up 33% of the people receiving food stamps.
In the article I read,() there were no statistics for other races in regards to food stamps.
Draw your own conclusions on the FACTS. One person on food stamps is too many, regardless of their race. It is just a shame that the left always has to create this racial divide in our country.

Newt was never going to any NAACP meetings or functions as whom noted he was campaingning in Fouth Carolina and was attempting to prove himself not racist based on the fact that he was willing to go to the NAACP convention...
and I would Newt had plenty of oppurtunities to go to this convention whether he was president or not since the convention is held every year and each the speaker of the house is invited....so it's not like he's never been invited.......

Food Stamps, I am glad that we have this program . The increase in numbers is not the fault of President Obama but the result of the failed polices of the preceeding eight years. I wish the GOP would just own the true so we could get some meaningful problem solving done as a nation.
As I listen to the GOP contenders you get the idea that they believe that President is a Mullti-Trillionaire who could start all kinds of programs. If he were I believe that he would do all he could to releave human suffering in America.

this might be a minor point, but if 34% of the recipients are white and 22% of the recipients are black, and those two races make up approximately 85% of the population, can someone explain to me how only 15% of our population makes up 46% of the food stamp recipients in this country.
If Rep. Gutierrez's facts are right, then he makes valid points. However, the discrepancy above certainly brings his accuracy into question.

Storm what is your logic as to why these two numbers are directly related? The population of the US doesn't have to have anything to do with the spending on food stamps so this in no way invalidates the numbers.
That means 15% of the population is just really poor, thats what that means.......hardly invalidates all the numbers
That means that all of the other racial groups: latinos, asians and others account for 40+% of people on food stamps
36%+22%+46%=102% which granted is not possible however this is in all likelyhood the result of rounding. You if the actual number of blacks is 21.57%(or something like that) rounding up to the nearest whole number would make that 22% and if you also did that with the two other numbers one could easily end up the 102
The reason is the addition of the rounded as opposed to the exact values and we never do serious math with the rounded values you should always use the exact values

This sums up Whom's understanding of economics...nobody has ever made an honest buck in their life, or built wealth on their own, all wealth has been inherited, there is no way to be successful if you were not born into money.

believe it or not but it is quite possible for such an imbalance in the program's demographic, once again the total american population and this do not have to have anything to do with each other
