Should we have a Caucasian day?
That's what one Arizona lawmaker is proposing. Arizona State Representative Cecil Ash, a Republican from Mesa, made the comments after a fellow lawmaker Richard Miranda suggested a "Latino Appreciation Day" on the floor of the house.
Ash responded, asking if there will be a "White Appreciation Day," once Caucasians are no longer the majority in the state of Arizona.
Racial tensions have been particularly high in Arizona's since Jan Brewer signed the anti-immigrant S.B.1070, one of the strictest immigration bills in the country.
Ash says he was just trying to lighten the mood on the house floor but he stands by what he said: He supports Latino Appreciation Day as long as Miranda promises to agree to "White Appreciation Day" once whites become the minority.

Our State Superintendent of public instruction is a DENTIST who favors charter schools and vouchers and we have three state senators, Ralph Shortey, Sally Kern and Ken Jolley that give the impression of being totally insane. They are referred to here as the Three Stooges. But the people keep voting them in. We have two GOP U.S. senators, Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe and four GOP congressmen. Oklahoma is headed downward in a spiral and the blame is totally on those who voted straight GOP ticket.

This is just so wrong on so many levels. These people are racist to their core. I won't step foot in Arizona, and I'm white. These white men are scared, scared because white people are going to become the minority in this country and the white guy just can't have that. Rather than just getting along with their fellow human beings and treating everyone as equals, these white guys want to pit the races against each other. Everyone should be appreciated for who and what they are no matter their skin color. This is 2012 people, haven't we gotten past all of the racist crap. I believe PS was focusing on holidays specifically designed to celebrate national unity, not religious holidays. Thanksgiving is a good example, but not Christmas, Easter or St. Valentine's Day... To me, Christmas is more of a celebration of the Winter Solstice, while Easter celebrates the Vernal Equinox. Race shouldn't count as long as people love the country and are loyal to it, but I suppose for Jan Brewer & Co, race is all that really matters, and this is evidence of the destructive, radical crap the GOP seems to be about these days. So very sad.
I agree with you - race should not matter, that is why SB 1070 is not about race - it is about fighting ILLEGAL immigration for Americans, Americans of all ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
How about reforming immigration law? The 96 law added 80% to the illegal immigration problem according to CBO sources!
I say no blanket amnesty but a serious program that requires fines and commitment, and an oath of allegiance. Legalization based upon personal merit. But this profiling crap has to stop. Profiling only serves to hurt people and create resent, and there's no room for that crap in today's civilized world.
Open - I agree with you we have a serious illegal immigration policy and reforms are needed, but time and time again the federal government has failed in their responsibility to do something. Then when Arizona tries to do something they are vilified as the bad guys and are fighting in court with the federal government. It is absurd.
I also get tired of the, politically correct, ultra sensitive, can't hurt anyone's feelings "profiling" argument. The law doesn't permit law enforcement to confront anyone who looks "illegal" and question them on their immigration status, but if someone is caught doing something else illegal and there is doubt on their citizenship status, then why can't you check it? It would happen to us if we were in another country and that country would have every right to.

Last night I watched a program about how hard it must be to hide who you really are as a gay or lesbian in America and/or the military.
The host seemed ready to burst in to tears because of this subject.
This has been me my entire life as well as my family's. I grew up in downtown Phoenix, AZ. Lived there til 2nd grade. Downtown Phoenix then and now in this neighborhood is predominately Latin-American and Black-American. Our neighborhood though was more Mexican also most my cousins lived there. It was happy and fun. Never felt out of place. Things changed. Because our first language was mainly Spanish. Our grandmother was helping my mother to take care of us then My grandmother's predominate language was Spanish. She was helping my mom because she was blind then.
My mother was granted eyesight through surgery in one eye in 1960-62. So less help was needed from our grandmother.
My father had been severely beaten by teachers for speaking Spanish while growing up. He did this defiantly. His reasoning his friends who couldn't speak English needed someone to help them understand and be understood, so he chose himself to do this. He never forgot.
He told my mother and her mother that they could no longer speak Spanish to us. I was 4. We moved out of this neighborhood I when I was 7.
The number 1 reason?
To move to a neighborhood and school so we could learn to speak perfect English, no accents. We moved to NW phoenix at the time a predominately Caucasian environment. At this new school and every year you where asked to put down what race you are. When this land was sold by the French, Mexicans were to be considered of the Caucasian(white) race.
In 2nd grade, at this new school, when that paper came my parents said to put Caucasian so I did. Now in 3rd grade when this came up again. I went home and asked my mom&dad why?
They call me names and say I am not so why do I have to say I am Caucasian ?
They said then do what you feel is right and will stand by you.
They did. The school made a stink about it and my Dad And Mom stood by my decision.
You see to other Americans I am not white(Caucasian). I am even less then if I stand up and say I am Mexican-American(Chicano) and proud of it.
There a lot of Americans of Latin-American descent who do not make waves so they can be Caucasian(white).
They can feel and deceive themselves that I am included "how wonderful for me and my family." My heart breaks every time something happens that shows how America really feels about people who look like me.

Simple at times, even though I served in the USAF, like a man without a country. It brings me to tears and my heart breaks. I begin again and patch that break and begin anew. "Live Laugh Love" "Happiness Joy Laughter"
Chicano, Not every feels like the monsters in Arizona. There are those in this world are really happy to recognize that we each and every one have something different. I like you, grew up with a mixed bunch of people where I lived. I could only see that they all cared about me and were our friends. It is sad that some people are so insecure with themselves they have to be bigots.
I live in New Mexico in a mixed neighbor hood still. I love all the cultures in our state. Yes, we have some bad people, but I say always look for the good. Most of us are good people.
Lets see in Milwaukee, we have Irish fest, Festa Italiana, Indian Summer, German Fest, LGBT fest, African world fest, Bastille days, Polish fest, Arab world fest, Greek fest, Asian Moon and others without offense to the rest of the nation. I guess that's an Arizona thing.
Living in Massachusetts we had many issues in the forced busing.
That has all been worked out,I lived in Arizona for a year on a job tranfer,it was a right to work state,but because i was a union employee they had to pay me the union wage,needless to say the hate was horrific,i couldn't wait to go back to Boston,my grand parents came from Ireland im sure they encountered some problems but all 14 uncles and aunts worked at the GE or Navy Yard,i suppose if you live in AZ its ok to have your lawn done cheaply by
some "non" americans but this country was built on immigration and it always will,the only thing i disagree on is the social security thing i was in an office in town where there were many people who were applying for benefits
not even being in the country for 3 months and were turned away,if you come here you look for work here,Now in Boston we have all kinds of festivals and all are welcome,lets get rid of the tbaggers and the right wing terrrorist
