The Republican assault on teachers continues.
The Alabama state legislature is trying to decide whether or not to pay some of its teachers a couple of percentage points more next year.
But one Republican state senator thinks that increasing teachers' salaries will do nothing but lead to less-qualified teachers. Huh?
This is state Senator Shadrack McGill's rationale:

"It's a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach.
"To go in and raise someone's child for eight hours a day, or many people's children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn't want to do it, OK?
"And these teachers that are called to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach. It's just in them to do. It's the ability that God give 'em. And there are also some teachers, it wouldn't matter how much you would pay them, they would still perform to the same capacity."
McGill is essentially saying "teachers will teach no matter what, so let's stiff them on salary." Never mind that the average teacher salary in Alabama is well below the national average to begin with.
McGill's "Biblical principle" does not apply to lawmakers, however. In 2007, Alabama legislators got a 62% pay raise. McGill said that was important to stop corruption.
Which means, McGill thinks part-time Alabama legislators deserve to make more money ($49,500) than a full-time public school teacher who has a Master's degree and 15 years of experience in the classroom ($49,238)!!

WOW!! You Liberals are clueless. My children have been to public school in two different states. In Pennsylvania I lived in the Philly area, loved it there and hope to move back some day. One of the most expensive areas as to money spent per kid with some of the worst results. I now live in a state that spends the second least amount of money per child and it also has the highest per-ca-pita college grads. The first place ran by Democrats the second ran by Republicans. experience has shown me that you libs are talking out of the side of your necks. If there are flaws in my education it would have been at the public level before my first degree ( chem ) and my second (DMD) which were private. My kids have received a much better education in charter schools then in public because the unions aren't protecting useless teachers.
Oh, Deb learn some history. MLKing was a Republican the area that fought for the rights of black was predominately religious and Republican, and during the human rights revolution here in America the Dummy crats ( including All Gore's own Father) blocked legislation to improve rights for blacks.

All with Benefits after serving one term in office plus full pension and free health care for Life. Nice Job if you can get it. I have been saying that for years and people have laughed at me. The way to take down a democracy is to get rid of thinking people. How do you do that, get rid of educators, thus education. The powerful private sector can then take over and teach only what they allow to a chosen few. Sound familiar, look at all the dictatorships and their educational programs.
It makes sense, if you ask me. Democracy is based on debate and different ideas, if people are uneducated or simply don't have the time to inform themselves, they're destined to be oppressed. And the GOP is hard at work by destroying education and eliminating worker protection laws. Do the math.

He also conveniently forgets that it costs money to get that master's degree. Many teachers live on a pittance trying to repay their student loans. They are derided constantly for wanting retirement and health benefits.
What are we teaching our children when we have these kinds of attitudes to the people who change our children's lives? How many of us have a fond memory of a teacher who reached out and pounded a love of learning into our skulls?
Teaching is not an easy job. I would suggest he try it, but he is not qualified.
You work and struggle, to make ends meet and you get your masters and you wait for your cost of living. You pay into your retirement. You work longer hours than any one else in anyother business and you are responsible for thousands of other peoples children in you career. You could not survive if you behaved like newt, or allen west, because you are expected to have a clean reputation. If you qualify, you can teach, and walk the straight and narrow. Is that Biblical enough?

This is one of the arrogant politicians in my state that cut teachers pay already! Alabama is run completely by teabaggers now. They think they will be re-elected, but I hear teachers talking, many of them republicans, that will not vote for them again.
The republican governor-and the pro-tem of the Senate are trying to raid the education trust fund to pay other expenses in the state. Our teacher's union had been strong and made many advances for education. It took 2 months for these shysters to come in and cut our pay and start the raid.
Alabama education had made some strides, largely due to the union support, but now the republicans have reneged on their agreements to pay their part of retirement by passing a law to make the employees pay more from their pay without any increase in pay- thus a pay-cut. Compete lunacy reigns in Alabama government. They pay 33 million for a coach and cut teachers pay. So much for a national championship.
When I retired from teaching in 2000, They were asking tenured and overly educated teachers to retire because they didn't want to pay us higher salaries. They wanted to hire first year teacher at much less. The trend had begun. When I went to Texas to Teach things were good and they only wanted those with experience and MA and PHD. When gw wanted to start the cuts, I took the retirement offer, thinking I might come to NM and teach for a while longer. Now their education system is low on the totem poll of education in Texas.
The only state behind us use to be Mississippi. We got into the 20's and I believe we will be back to 49th in terms of pay in the very near future. Sickening.

Certainly, McGill's "Biblical principle" has been corrupted by his own self-interest, or he'd recognize that the most corrupted occupation has become Politics. For the overwhelming majority of elected politicians, the task with highest priority, once elected, is to work on being reelected. With that being the highest priority, the next highest priority has to be satisfying the wishes of those who donated the largest sums of money - even if they aren't amongst the politicians constituents - which leaves the lowest priority being to actually represent one's all of constituents as best he/she can and knowing for each Bill presented whether being pro or con can morally be based on majority rules, or if it's an ethical principle such as Civil Rights, where the proper vote may be against the wishes of the Plutocrats and/or a majority of the constituents.
The best politician is also a Statesman, and will use the quality of the job done speak for whether or not reelection has been earned. But, quite unfortunately, until money is taken out of politics, the Statesman's Route will seldom work.

Many of us agree the politicians are payed way to much and many barely work for it. To be a teacher is commitment from the get go. My daughters Masters degree in teaching has cost her as much as house payment . Teachers have very important job and are being demonized by politicians. Tell you how much they take us to the cleaners. It was back in 80s believe. My husband was in the military and we were setting over seas wondering if were going get paycheck. This was when they almost shut the government down. Finally we got 3% and they voted themselves 13% raise. I am sick of the abuse directed toward teachers and schools. I don't care if people are successful its the American way, but I do care if they have made money by destroying others and never look back at the carnage left behind. The best news heard this morning is someone finally is going after the wall Street casinos that almost brought us to great depression. They robbed the American people blind and we have been asking when will they be held accountable?Kudos to the man who said enough and took on these wolves. If someone is not held accountable and this problem addressed,we are condemned to repeat it again !!!!!

I don't have anything against teachers....I like you think they have one of the most important jobs in America. They deserve good pay and benefits for sure. My beef is with the current system. It is just not working. We are falling behind other countries at an alarming rate. Personally, I think the government and the unions need to get out of the Education business. Teachers should be rewarded for doing good work and the bad one's need to be reprimanded and or removed. Too many times good teachers get let go because of budget cuts and the untenured teachers are the first to go....It doesn't matter if they were the best teacher in the world....Simply let go by seniority. Throwing more money at the system isn't going to fix "the system". What incentive is there for teachers to go above and beyond the call of duty? (And a good many do). What conscequences are there for the one's who don't. Once a teacher has tenure...It is next to impossible to do anything about poor job performance. I have two kids in the system now and I see the effects all the time. I'm not saying that there are not underfunded schools. I know that there are...What I am saying is it isn't the only problem. I had to remove my child from our local school because he was being bullied. I met with the teachers and asked if they could provide more than one teacher on duty during lunch and the first thing out of their mouth was "their contract". They would rather eat in the teacher's lounge and let one teacher oversee a couple hundred kids. I also asked that the teachers during recess split up instead of stand face to face and talk to each other. They said that they already were split up. Well after my son came home with a gash in his arm where a bully hit him with a stick. I with the principle observed the very teachers standing face to face gabbing while there were children getting punched and pushed around right under their noses. Needless to say I removed my child from this school and now have to drive him to another one. However, the new one isn't much better. We are considering private school or home school. My son has special needs and the school does get extra money to have him...but I have seen very little special care given.

teachers have there problems. but this is also what i am getting at with we have let the schools down. you seem to have talked with the right people, but have you gone to the root of the real problem the bully's parents?
as today to many of them just drop there kids off thinking school is just a day care center.
bully's have been around since chirst was a corporal (sorry my sense of humor), i myself have been bullied cause of my slowness in some areas. but i was able to fight back, kick lot butt but also had my butt kicked a lot as its not just the bully as they all run around in a group.
Pilot...I did confront the boys father and he did reprimand his son from what I understand. However, I cannot take on 60 - 70% of the kids parents in my son's class. The bullying was getting way out of hand. Some of these kids get their behavior from their parents and I have met with them and it hasn't been a pretty experience if you know what I mean. I don't want to go to jail and loose everything that my wife and I have worked for. These days people are just looking for a reason to sue.

as they can not be ever where all the time. i when to a California school and well , we had 25 to 35 kids per class room. guess it was a times change, as i also remember growing up and if i popped off or did stupid things with my friend their parents would set us straight then take you home and in my case tell my father who would then set me straight again.
I was pretty fortunate with the whole Bullying thing...I only had one incident when I was in the 3rd grade. A sixth grader kept punching me in the arm. When I got up enough nerve to fight back he punched me in the mouth. When I got home my dad asked "what happened to your lip" I told him. We immediately got into the car....(Keep in mind...my dad is still considered one of the toughest men around at 62 years old) drove to this kids house....My dad knocked on the door and the bully answered the door and nearly crapped his pants. My dad told his dad that if his son ever punched me again that he was going to get the a$$ whipping of his life. Needless to say...the story made it's rounds and I never had another bullying problem.

not only was i bullied, for my slowness on things but i was also from a broken home, when my father got custody of me back in the 60`s in Calif. he was not the first every father to get custody but he was one of a handful that did, as back then it didn't matter to the state what your mother did she would get custody. sadly still cant understand that, guess they though the mom was all loving and every thing.
had my best friends mom come up while playing and told him he could not play with me anymore cause of the fact i was a bad kid cause of my father got divorce. sad but true.

I have been known to get into spats with this person from time to time but what you posted is just not necessary. You have succeeded in reinforcing all the negative stereotypes you have assumed TAP is here to support.
NOW on to the actual ISSUE TAP I would say primarily what has to happen in education has to do with what is taught more so than who is teaching because even the highest performing schools and teachers are turning out students who are not receiving a good education.
The tenure thing is stupid. I mean say you have a newer teacher, well they get paid less than someone who isn't as new but they may do the same amount of work....so that's just silly and the firing part as you mentioned. We need people to want to get into the field of education and I believe this is a major, major deterent. However I would still say that cirriculum is the most important issue at stake.

NOW on to the actual ISSUE TAP I would say primarily what has to happen in education has to do with what is taught more so than who is teaching
We need people to want to get into the field of education and I believe this is a major, major deterent. However I would still say that cirriculum is the most important issue at stake.
If you would have read more closesly that I believe the cirriculum is the problem not really teachers. All of our US schools almost without exception fail to be equal or surpass the public school systems in Europe and China, India, etc. this means the kids are not getting trained to compete on the global market place, our failing system is not equiping them for the future and we have to fix that NOW because our future is at stake
You're right the GOP is not concerned about education in reality luckily for me I never claimed they did in the first place...come to think I didn't even use the words GOP or republican so where you saw my non existent support in my statement as WRITTEN.....my comments are always straight forward is no hidden meanings because what I say is what I mean.

I saw that Japan has been hammered by heavy snow, 3 dead there I believe. It seems like winter is everywhere but here. We have only had a skiff of snow this year and the temperatures have been almost springlike. It is so sad to hear of so many dying from the cold. Most were poor or homeless.

Who out there is getting into teaching to make money? Who says I'm going to be a high powered super school teacher? How public school school teachers are rich because of teaching?
Correctly when there is great profit to had from a line of work many people will get into it for the more, problem is teachers don't that much to begin with. A lot of new younger folks in the profession barely make enough to cover the student loans they incurred to be educated degree holding professionals.
Fact is teachers make far less than most professions especially for the amount of schooling involved.
I have idea lets cut the salary of stupid talking head politicians like this guy since clearly there poor, pathetic performance is not something society needs.

@Pilotshark...Don't fall for "TAP's" story...for if he was a GOOD parent, he would of did the homework and check out the school before putting his special need's child in a school that couldn't provide and/or accomodate his child with the proper care and attention. Also, after reading his story, he seems to be hell bend on coming against the "Teachers"???? Saying things like, "they were too busy talking with one another and/or worried about their contracts,etc.... Many of my friends across America are hard working, excellent teachers and care about the children they teach. Let's face it, 99% of the teacher's in the US are under paid for a JOB that is more important than what a Politician, NBA, NFL, Engineers, Lawyers, and Celeb's get paid for. Again, if "TAP" had did his research, we would have found out that Guess What? There are programs for "Special" need children. Not all schools have the problems but they are out there.Lastly, most teachers do not become teachers for the "MONEY", if that was the case, we could have very few teachers. However, they should be paid more, but the GOP folks are trying to keep teachers, middle class and the poor from getting $$$$'s that can help the quality of lifestyle...

This is crazy, but not unexpected. How about we do this. All politicians MUST pay the going rate for their healthcare insurance, they only get paid for the time they are actually in session, NO car, NO staff, NO perks of ANY kind. Let us remind them, they are PUBLIC SERVANTS! They are not some bunch of entitled rich men and women who can do for themselves as they please and leave their constituents fend for themselves. Lastly, TERM LIMITS, NO MORE CAREER POLITICIANS...period. This along with campaign finance reform would put an end to a lot of nonsense.
