MSNBC's Rachel Maddow is joined by Hardball's Chris Matthews to discuss how Newt Gingrich's victory will impact the GOP race and the Obama reelection campaign.
Newt Gingrich has won the South Carolina Republican primary, capping off a remarkable comeback for his presidential bid that reshapes the trajectory of the battle for the GOP nomination.
Based on early exit polls, NBC News projects Gingrich as the winner of the primary, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will finish second.

that's has to hurt polls close and you lose. LOL so much for magic underwear.
so lets some it up 1 win NH 1 lost SC and a flip-flop win in IA or guess call that a tie.
not sure if Mitt has ever got any higher in the South then 3rd. and Florida is next.
But it is early.
Re: Newt Gingrich projected win....
All I can say is if Newt Gingrich is the new ''Poster Boy'' for the Republican Party , then they can forget about ever winning elections in the future. Conservatives are truly on their way down and if Gingrich with his ''checkered past'' wins the nomination... it will be another major lose for the Republicans ! President Obama will be re-elected !
Let's hope he does win! I'm all in favor of it! I think having all 3 primaries/caucus won by a different ego-centric candidate makes for a great, long fight between all of the GOP. Makes for great entertainment.
My predictions are Newt-Mitt-Paul and lastly Santorum and then Colbert/Cain over Perry.
The longer this goes, the better it is. Newt's doing a lot of the dirty work for the Democrats. All we have to do is rehash it again in August/Sept when some of the Independents and Democrats hadn't heard it before. Obama 2012.
As I watched Ron Paul's speech last night, I was suddenly stricken with the proverbial light bulb over my head. Ron Paul probably won't run a 3rd party challenge but he will certainly set the stage for his son to step into a 3rd party in 2016 or 2020. Perhaps that's why he sometimes says thing that lead one to believe he doesn't truly believe he will win.
He's like the other GOP puppets, a liar. Talking about food stamps when it was a REPUBLICAN, BOB DOLE who pushed for food stamps, oh, and also the foundation of Obamacare....
The GOP, the only party who moans when you do what they propose... What a bunch of con artists!
Hey Open Range: I agree with you and it will only get NASTY as time goes bye. ALL in the NAME to WIn and keep the TEA PARTY happy!!!
They just want the 'black guy' out of office, that's all this is about. They won't EVER admit to that, but they know that's all they care about, deep inside those dark souls, that's all they care about. Shame on them!
Romney is so in love with himself he can't even admit he lost in SC, not even to a fellow GOP puppet like himself... He's a money boy, and one shallow one! His only conviction, greed, make money, to hell with people, money is what counts.... What a disgrace of a HUMAN being, he just managed to degrade humanity to money making entities and nothing more. So much for Christian values, remember, Christ wasn't exactly about money.... Romney is nothing but a poser!
Haha - yes in our "dark souls" we simply want Obama out because of his race...if I already didn't think your credibility was at zero I do now. Funny how I didn't see you playing the race card when Herman Cain was railroaded by guys like Ed Schultz and other liberals. Here is a little secret...Democrats and liberals like yourself feel that all African Americans have a duty to be Democrats and act like any person that is not (ie. Herman Cain) has betrayed that duty. You are more concerned that if African Americans like Herman Cain become more and more prominent in the Republican party it will erode the base that you have counted on for so many years, rather than actually improving conditions for everyone.
Capitalism is making money...that is why people work - to profit, it isn't a bad thing. Mitt Romney has made money by taking failing businesses and turning them around, ask a company like Sports Authority. Just curious Open...do you consider Envy a Christian value?
Junior, still have dreams of being a kock bro huh? Face it, the only ones that 'envy' people like that are you and the rest of the teabaggers with the way you defend them. Keep on licking the boot that kicks ya, one day you'll wise up.
Hi LC.
We've had this conversation about envy, remember? You're getting a little gruff again. <s>
You may not agree with this, but please have a look:
Frank Schaeffer - Republican activist who's father started the religious right in the '70 (moral morjority?)
Open letter to Barack Obama dated 2/11/09
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/an-open-letter-to-preside_b_165359.html
I think Obama should have heeded what this letter said, if he ever got it. He might have saved himself a lot of time and rejection, but it's a new day. Voting as long as it's not Obama may be this Country's biggest mistake ever.
Hi Kathe
I hope you are having a good Sunday so far. Yes, maybe I was a little gruff in the previous post - but there is nothing that makes me angrier on here than claims of racism against Obama - that we (Conservatives) want Obama out of office just because he is a "black guy." That would be like me saying all liberals are
racist because they don't like Herman Cain, or they are sexist because they
don't like Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin.
It was an interesting letter and yes, there are extreme fringe elements in the Republican Party, but there are extreme elements to the Democrat Party. What many liberals don't seem to understand is there is not some vast conspriacy to get Obama out of office due to anything other than his polices...people like myself truly believe that his polices are bad for this country that is why we want him out, that is why so many of his issues have been blocked. Saying that people "hate him" is extreme and wrong...we don't like his policies.
John - comments like that just reinforce my belief I am on the right track.
loose cannon,
personally, i believe that Frank Schaffer is in a good position to use the word "hate" when he is referring to the feelings that the "right" have about our president.
having dealt with the religious right, having personal conversations with them in regard to their feelings about President Obama, why would he use the word "hate" if it did not apply?
i believe the words of Frank Schaffer.
Loose Cannon:You cite Sports Authority as a Romney success. He claims while at Bain Capital he created 100,000 jobs,he was at Bain for 15 years thats 6,666 jobs per year,WOW!How many companies did he suck dry of assets and pension funds, then pawn the pensions off on the government for taxpayers to pay?How many lives did he ruin in the name of free enterprise.I can understand investing in start up business' by private equity firms where they either sink or swim, but I cant see raiding established business'and bleeding them dry, leaving an empty shell.Thats not how the free market is supposed to work. Also he said he would not have rescued the auto industry, destroying at least a million jobs.Of course he would, then his friends at Bain could have a field day with those pensions. He and Bain were nothing but parasites.
The problem with saying "We must get Obama out, we must get Obama out!" is that no Republicans chanted like that when Bush was destroying the country.
The obvious reaction to him was that the Replublicans were entirely thrown out of the government.
If Republicans thought Bush was so bad that they threw them out of the government entirely in 2008, why would they want the same people back in now?
TRC,
and then when the economy didn't turn around fast enough, look what happened in 2010. people voted based on their personal situations, they voted only for change, they didn't know what kind of change they were voting for.
it is taking us awhile to crawl out of this recession, but it doesn't help when those running for office (scott walker) lie about/or just don't mention how they are going to govern, just like the baggers in washington.
we have to hope now that people are more informed, and that they accept the country's very slow progress AS progress. there are those who think Obama hasn't done enough, and they want a republican back in office again. i hope most americans remember what the W. bush administration did to our country for his 8 years in office (not that previous administrations, dems and repubs, do not bear some responsibility) and re-elect Barack Obama.
why would they want them all back now?
are their lives better?
it has to do with personal situations and the impatience of things to turn around. they do the only thing they feel they can; they speak, they move, with their VOTE, and hope its beneficial.
so has anyone hear any thing on turn out yet? smiling they called it fast and its not just MSNBC, CNN, and Fox
I think the fix is in. Too bad they have to take turns winning primaries to make them look like valuable candidates. The "SHOW" goes on.
Hey 10 posts and none of our GOP vine posters are in yet with their praises of Newts virtues and good family values.
LOL their email boxes are being filled as we speak.
Mitt is saying he wants to restore the founding principles to this country? How about ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL? That moron probably doesn't know crap about the Constitution or the Declaration, he's all about money, that's his founding principle right there.... And he wants more wars? Why doesn't he and his rich kids go fight? He's good at avoiding the service, a coward, what the hell does he know about sacrifice?
Mitt = a CLOWN, and a dangerous one!
OMG! Newt's head really WILL explode now! As if he wasn't conceited enough, this will push him over the top. Can't wait to hear his little speech. The self-congratulation will be starting already I bet. And Callista will be over the moon. She'll have a smile plastered on that mug from ear to ear! LOL
LOL! A big chunk of SC voters would probably vote for Lucifer if he was a registered Republican. Gingrich isn't even qualified to be a Dr. Seuss character!
Yes he is!
Romney got his rump kicked hard tonight... The message? Not cool to lie to the American people!
Openrange. I cannot believe how badly Mitt got his butt kicked! I was wrong, I really thought Mitt had this sewn up. Good, I think Gingrich will be easier in the long run for Obama to beat. For one thing, Newt will not get the black vote with his racist comments. That's a good thing. Obama will be helped there.
Gingrich's tax plan will raise the deficit worse than Mitt's., 900 Billion to 1.3 Trillion. Well, time will tell. Democrats better unite and fight! Newt is dangerous. He lies real convincingly, too. For example, he lied about the pipeline. He lied about Obama wanting socialism. A dangerous liar with a mean streak and a volatile temperament. Whoa...
Hi India!
I haven't fallen for anything that the "candidates" have said. Especially when they do mostly Obama bashing rather than being professional and discussing issues that matter. Voting for just anyone as long as it's not Obama is a dangerous reason.
I remember Gingrich and he's never been a convincing liar or historian. I think people give him too much credit as the "smart one".
Ivor, The Devil is in the Primaries, in SC. Those southern bigots have climed in to bed with that Gomer newt cake.
I am getting livid listening to Gingrich give his speech. He is standing there lying through his teeth about the pipeline among other things. My God Repubs can lie ande lie and make it sound like the truth to all the sheep. If he ever gets in, we're dead. Don't even want to think about it, but I'll probably have nightmares tonight!
Like I posted elsewhere, it's going to be interesting this year! Sorry about the nightmares, MJB. I know a lot of people who say we have been living a nightmare since Obama was elected! :-)
That would be the sheep I was talking about.
Do you have any older brothers or sisters, Cappy? You needle people here like a little boy trying to get attention.
All men and women are CREATED equal...its what they do with their life that separates them from each other.
Sounds like the phrase in the preamble those landed wealthy aristocrats wrote as some held slaves. Of course they did hope we would grow and learn,as a nation we did but not as a people.
I found Newt's acceptance speech for being the the South Carolina GOP Primary Winner appalling. His coded words denoted his narrow minded thinking. His reference to Saul Alinsky, considered by Wikipedia and others of being the "founder of modern community organizing" was totally uncalled for. Even William Buckley saw this man as a great organizer. Newt calls others Elite when really he is the Elite because he only focuses on a few and not the country as a whole and wants to take us back in time. Newt is so short-sized and critical of all, especially President Obama, who has accomplish much so far in his current term. Newt, who is one of the right wing 1%ers, has NO idea or has forgotten how the other side (99%ers) live. We are a great country because of democracy and NOT libertarianism. Just as Rich Perry did with Turkey, Newt's comments about the Saudi King was extremely uncalled for and unnecessary considering what is going on in the Middle East.
It is a fact recorded elsewhere , the religious right seeks to rule the world. They will use phony patriotism and lies to get us into wars to spread "democracy"--Christian style--around the globe. This of course makes them the army of the anti-Christ.
LOL its Monday morning and good to start it off with a great laugh!!
and we have a new comic in the house, we can tell it has gone to the teapubliecant school of comedy.
Wait now. We should be more liberal and show sympathy for our brother who has fallen under the spell of right winged gargoyles. It does seem he has immersed himself in a sea of lies while ignoring the truth nipping at his heels. Yet freedom and liberty is still his--think he understands those two terms?
