I knew it was official when I received an e-mail from Glenn Beck denouncing Obama’s “war for oil” in Libya. It’s like déjà vu in Wonderland --- the same, but all turned around.

All of the sudden the same Republican hawks who were complaining that Obama was not taking military action to protect the people of Libya are now complaining that he took action without sufficiently asking their permission first.

I’m not weighing in here on whether the military action required congressional approval or oversight. My point is, Obama could have brought a resolution to Congress on a silver platter, and Republicans would be all over the news complaining it should have been gold.

They just hate him.

I already belong to a Credit Union and I love it! I wouldn't go back to a bank for anything. With a Credit Union you are part owner of it. There is no big owner and no stockholders you have to worry about. As part owner, you get a say so in the way it is run. At the Annual Meeting you get to vote on officers, they feed you, then they have a drawing and you win money! I love it!

I moved to a smaller community bank years ago and since that time I have not paid a single penny in fees. I have free checking for life (no balance requirement), free savings account, free online banking, no fees for transfers, free Visa check card for ATM withdrawls...just for a few services. I do pay a yearly fee for my safe deposit box. Another great plus...their banking hours are M-F, 8:00 AM-7:00 PM, and Saturday 8:00 AM-1:00 PM! Loans, other than mortgages, are done quickly and at competitive rates. The people working there are friendly and know your name. I have never regretted moving to a smaller community bank...

The easiest way to tell you what CUs offer is to go to www.financialpluscu.com. Otherwise it would take forever to list it all on here. I don't know what kind of interest you're used to, but I'm guessing nobody is paying a lot. Buy you can get CDs, money mkt, special svgs accts etc. Just go there and look at all the stuff they have. I think all CUs are pretty much the same no matter which one you choose or where you live. :)

America, like it's European Cousins needs revenue. Stop the Bush Tax cuts for one. Stop the subsidees to very healthy large corporations. How about Import Duties? Tariffs? Louis is right. Obama did extend the Patriot Act. Doesn't matter why, what circumstances, etc. He agreed to it and signed it. He has also been able to succeed where Bush II failed, that in both getting 3 countries through FTAs. He was also able to break through the red tape and open the trucking lanes from Mexico as agreed to by Clinton. Bush II was unable to get that accomplished. Obama hasn't been the nightmare many Republicans allude to. He is rather clueless on the economy, but the above elements do offset the many negatives.

Personally, I think no. Nobody, person, family, or corporation, should get any tax deduction of any kind whatsoever until the dept is under control. Then, returns should be given strictly on a percentage of net paid basis with no special privileges for anybody for any reason whatsoever. End all loopholes, and lower the rates.

Louis- advocating for tax breaks while criticizing tax breaks is inconsistent. If tax breaks are bad- then let's get rid of them. We can't have a society where we get to keep my tax breaks but we get rid of everybody elses.

What would it take to balance the the U.S. budget and dept? Would the entire panoply of specialness dispensations otherwise referred to as loopholes, deductions, givebacks, tax breaks, etc. do the job?

Supposedly, at the start of the year, the government passes a budget. Then over the course of the year, poo poo accrues. Maybe it is a horrible year for hurricanes, and it adds to the budget. Maybe someone attacks us and we have to go to war, adding billions to the budget. Maybe our president just doesn’t like someone, and we have to go to war, adding a trillion to the budget. Maybe, the economy goes into freefall due to the incompetence of our leadership, and we need a huge stimulus package to save it, adding a trillion to the budget. Or, maybe the government decides to give a multi hundreds of billion dollar prescription drug benefit, that wasn’t in the original budget. The point being that all of these adjustments get added to the budget as they accrue.

At the end of the year, after all taxes have been collected, the entire budget is taken out of the tax collections. Then, some portion of the remainder is assigned for paying down the dept. I’m sure some formula can be agreed upon, lol. Whatever is leftover, can then be returned, proportionally, based on the percentage put in.

The budget gets/is always balanced. The dept is paid on/reduced. People get back whatever is left, after they pay for the government that is the result of what they have voted for. Simple. Fair.

Just like we can't have a society where only the wealthy get tax breaks and get rid of everyone elses. Point taken and made. You all have been inconsistent as well. GoTcha!

Not for sure what attributes you are giving to me. I doubt we agree on all that much. I will say- I think the silliest phrase that has been inserted into the debate is "fair share". I'll pay what I'm legally required to and not a penny more. And I won't be happy about how mush I pay- no matter how small it is.

All of that said, though, I've been on record here many times in saying that society has a right to decide what Government should provide, how big it should be, what role it should perform. Society, though, has to step up to the plan it demands. If we all get together and decide we need socialized medicine, as an example- then fine. But we all have to jump in and pay for it. I've suggested a national sales tax that is configured to reach the level need for a single payer system if that is what's desired. You might call that a regressive, I might not. Rich people would pay much more because they naturally spend more.

If you want to talk about rescinding the Bush cuts- then do it. All of them. He lowered rates and took many Americans out of the role of taxpayer. Go back to the Clinton rates across the board.

Two things, First is that if we are going to establish a new federal tax for anything, I would rather see a tax on property. Specifically, on land, not on man-made products. Thus, ground, based on it's market value, but not houses. Though I would rather see an end to all deduction, corporate and personal, to deal with our fiscal problems. As I said, within the tax code, ain't nobody special.

Second, the single payer system I would like to see, is one that basically states that we have each others back. Once you have spent ten percent of your annual income, then the public would step in. No insurance companies, just an open market for services from institutions/businesses that provide them. Pay cash or credit for what you receive, but if something bad happens, you are not left without. Possibly with an option through the government to withhold extra tax money to have an account on hand to pay from, or to have extra withheld to pay for services received. Thus if you get through the year without needing any health-care, you pay nothing. But if you get in a bad spot healthwise, you have no fear of being made bankrupt by it. Indeed, if you have prepaid your account, you wouldn't even take a financial hit. That would make health-care an open and free market, thus lowering it's price and not forcing you to gamble on your health for security, or pay for what you do not receive.

Friend- good concepts. I am often amused because the solutions usually suggested is to let corporations and rich people pay for everything. the lists of demands is very great- and the quanitities of rich people and corporations never-ending. That is a common theme through these particular MSNBC blogs.

My amusement is that corporations and rich people have so many choices over where to play their games and ply their trades. You'll probably disagree with this concept- but if they actually charged businesses zero in corporate income tax, thus making the US a very good place to open a manufacturing plant, etc, would the employment go up significantly enough to raise the standards for all Americans, and the revenue to the government through regular income tax actually increase? Not saying it would, and it would take some lag time, but... possible. Or- we could just rant and rave about corporations sourcing work elsewhere- which is more the norm.

The first stimulus bill DID work. The CGO extimated it saved between 2-3 million jobs. No one expected a bill of that size to "end the recession", but it gave it a much-needed boost.

At least Obama's stimulus bills are designed to produce something instead of just handing out checks for $300 to every American (or cutting millions in taxes in the case of millionaires).

Spend almost $800B on a stimulus bill for "shovel ready" projects on infrastructure, then admit their is no such thing, then come back 2 years later after you get your way, and claim bridges are failing and if we pass another $450B, then we can fix them and put everyone back to work. If bridges were that bad, one would have thought the first stimulus would have addressed them... Also- if I do the math with the rosiest outcome descriptors possible, as laid out by Bill above- it comes to something like $400,000 per job. More realistic fractions would show that it was more like $650,000 or more per job. I suppose we need to let the arguments over effectiveness fester some more.

1/3 of the stimulus was for a tax cut, which the right would have hailed from a republican president, there were tax credits for purchasing energy-efficient appliances, it kept police on the streets and teachers in the classroom (which I consider pretty necessary for our society), provided funding for rail projects and fiber optic cable networking backbone for infrastructure improvements to the Internet to name a few.

I see where the Obama Administration has just announced a reduction of 350 Civilian Jobs at the Air Force Base in my State of Illinois. It should increase the efficiency of that base. At the same time- the state has announced that they are going to widen the road into our small but nice zoo and add side walks beside it with some money from the Feds.

How do those bills from the house produce more jobs? Reducing regulations won't require as much expenditure maybe, but that's probably going to just mean less spending and more profit for corporations and dirtier air, dirtier water, contaminated food, more sickness, etc. for people.

Folks, the other night I posted about a local high school girl who attempted suicide, and the next night I posted that she was in critical condition and in the hospital. I said at the time that it would be my last update on the story. Some of you had posted comments of support for those involved.

The post that I'm responding to brings me to go back on that 'last update' post. It turns out that the girl died earlier today, I hope that you folks can see where I'm coming from when I try to admonish someone for seeming to suggest that anyone commit suicide. I also hope you will agree with me on such suggestions being improper.

4. Supremacy of the Military -- Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism -- The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and antigay legislation and national policy.

Defunding Planned Parenthood, Anti-choice, homophobic, 'promise keepers', keep the wife at home barefoot and pregnant, "wives, submit to your husbands"...

6. Controlled Mass Media -- Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security -- Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -- Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

"Family values", Evangelical Fundamentalists, claiming they're Christian while actually acting completely un-Christian...

9. Corporate Power is Protected -- The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

No corporate taxes, the bailout with TARP, no regulations, "Corporations are people, my friend", the Koch Brothers, Wall Street...

10. Labor Power is Suppressed -- Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -- Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Elitism, defunding of education programs, hatred of Ivy League graduates, preference for dumbest candidates, rejection of science for mythology, denying funding for NPR, NEA, PBS ...

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -- Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Cheering for Texas executions (even for innocent people), "If you're found guilty in a Texas court, we will execute you!", heavy-handed response to peaceful protests, accepted abuse of prisoners by corrections officers...

Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -- Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

'Brownie' and Katrina, the Roberts court on Citizens United, Perry getting $55 Million from Super-PAC run by old buddy, Michigan Republican Governor can now appoint Emergency Financial Managers to take over 'distressed' communities (who wield Absolute Power to disband local goverments, dissolve union contracts and divert city property for personal purposes)...

14. Fraudulent Elections -- Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even the assassination of) opposition candidates, the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Further, I am asuming you are slamming the Bush plan in that regard? If so, could you tell us ow the Obama doctrine- ordering hits on bad guys, compares to public trials? You should kow that I, a conservative, do strongly support the Obama Doctrine. It eliminates any arguments about where to keep them, where to try them, etc.

If you don't spend money on projects that are needed anyway, you will wind up paying unemployment to the people that would be working AND there will be less revenue coming in from those people spending money and paying taxes.
