Mr. Cain should stop emulating the ostriches and get his head out of the sand. He might be able to reduce his ignorance then. But, given that he appears to be as stubborn as a mule, he must be one of those who believes that ignorance is bliss. Who brainwashed him? Or, did he do it to himself?

Mr. Cain would be well advised to learn something about the people involved with #OWS before he so blindly condemns them! Some of those people currently have multiple jobs but still have insufficient income to pay their bills. Most likely the student loans those people are paying off were only guaranteed by the federal government, but is payable to one of those banks their tax dollars helped bail out. Even for those who are currently jobless, how can they be blamed when there are so many other people applying for the same job, or they are so frequently told they are overqualified.

Too bad we can't place Mr. Cain in a live experiment where he has to trade places with one of the people involved with the #OWS protest - like in the movie Trading Places, in such a way that he'd remember his misfortunes under the counterfactual situation. How long has Mr. Cain lived his own world of make believe that he's so dissociated from reality.

Finally, situations like this just remind me how unfair party politics is. I shouldn't have to register as a Republican so I can vote for the candidate who is the least divorced from the real world albeit still so divorced from reality that he supports supply-side economics and trickle-down as demonstrably falsified as they are.

Just my thinking and I made a similar comment about it being the 666 plan upside down. From all examinations by economists, it's hard for them to even make any sense out of it.

It's also interesting that Cain refuses to mention WHO wrote the plan for him. Either they don't want their name associated with a disastrous piece of crap like his plan, or they have ulterior motives for it. Maybe he is a terrorist bent on sabatoging the country further, so we have total anarchy. The surplus GWB inherited wasn't in the deficit, It was in the annual budget, Clinton's budget in the last few years of his presidency was actually reducing the deficit, albeit slowly.

By the time Bush left office, his budget was adding $1.3 trillion to the deficit, and that wasn't counting two wars, two tax cuts, The Medicare prescription plan and the bill for Hurricane Katrina, all of which were carried off the books...

... but, then again, as Dick Cheney famously said, "DEFICITS DON'T MATTER!"...

You seem to have an interest in documentation about where the deficit came from. Let me give you the rundown of where that debt came from, and WHO.

The debt was about $1 trillion when Reagan took office, after the administrations of Nixon/Ford, and Carter, and then:

Reagan added $1.9 trillion in 8 years.

Next came George H.W. Bush who added $1.5 trillion (in just four years);

Bill Clinton added $1.4 trillion in the first 5 years of his 2 administrations, but then had balanced budgets and surpluses the last 3 years. So he added nothing else to the debt and left a surplus.

Then came the BIG DISASTER of... who added an additional $6.4 trillion to the deficit. The number is staggering.

George W. Bush ran up $6.4 trillion. That's nearly half—44.7 percent—of the $14.3 trillion total. We all know what did it—two massive tax cuts geared toward the rich, along with all the other spending that was not paid for, which was all of it including slashing the capital gains and inheritance taxes, the off-the-books wars, the unfunded Medicare expansion, etc.

In a history covering 30 years, nearly half the debt was run up in the eight years of the Bush administration with republicans voting for every single spending bill under Bush from 2001 to 2006, none of which were paid for.

Obama's efforts to dig the country out of the hole GW Bush left us in has added $2.4 trillion. Of course, Obama wouldn't have had to spend anywhere near that if he had been handed an economy as healthy as the one GW Bush was handed.

But instead Obama still has to deal with the Bush tax cuts, 2 wars and the huge economic crisis Bush left behind in his wake. So most of the spending Obama has done has been to continue paying for those unpaid for programs that GW MORON instituted. They weren't spending that Obama has chosen to do on his own.

tommy, it's clear that you don't understand the difference between debt, and deficit, so it doesn't surprise me that you don't understand that you can have a surplus, and still have debt.

In simple terms deficit and surplus are the difference between revenue, and planned spending (planned spending includes the scheduled payments on any debt you may have). Once the spending is done any remaining revenue is called surplus, and can be used to make additional payments against any debt. Of course it can also be handled like Bush handled it when he gave the 'temporary' tax break to the rich. Just in case you are wondering, a balanced budget is where the difference between planned spending and revenue is 0 or a surplus.

Do you really want to see what the CBO says about the budgets of Clinton during his 2 terms, and both of the Bushes during their collective 3 terms? If so, please read on:

Bush the elder: 13.0% deficit in his 1 term.

Clinton: 0.7% surplus in his first term, and 9.0% surplus in his second term.

Bush the younger: 7.1% deficit in his first term, and 20.7% deficit in his second term.

Walmart Moms: Not giving up on Obama yet

WASHINGTON — Their views on the economy are relentlessly bleak, but America's so-called Walmart Moms — the much-coveted working-class female voters whose support can swing an election — do not blame President Barack Obama and have not given up on him.

In voter focus groups conducted on Wednesday night in the political battleground states of Florida, New Hampshire and Iowa, the young mothers used words like disappointing, mediocre, wishy-washy and indifferent to describe Obama.

But they also acknowledged Obama alone could not resolve persistent U.S. economic difficulties in the three years he has been in the job. Many gave the president credit for trying and said they would consider voting for him again in 2012.

"I think President Obama inherited this mess. I think he's doing the best he can," said Debbie in New Hampshire, an Obama voter in 2008. Laura in Florida, another Obama backer, said: "You can't expect a miracle worker."

The three 10-person focus groups consisted of women with children at home who had shopped at the retail giant Walmart in the last month. The 90-minute sessions were organized by pollsters and watched by video by journalists in Washington who were allowed to identify the women only by first name.

Many of the participants, split roughly between those who backed Obama in 2008 and those who voted for Republican John McCain, criticized Obama for a lack of results. Some said he was not a forceful leader.

"I don't feel like he is being strong enough," said Cheryl in Florida. "He does have good ideas but I don't think he pushes them through. That concerns me."

The Walmart Moms — a catch phrase used by pollsters to identify key political swing groups, in the tradition of U.S. "soccer moms" and "NASCAR dads" — account for about 15 percent of the electorate.

As a whole they are about two-thirds white, mostly under the age of 44 and fairly evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. About half make less than $50,000 a year, said pollsters Neil Newhouse, a Republican, and Margie Omero, a Democrat, who conducted the focus groups.

The group leaned slightly to Obama when he won in 2008 but shifted to Republicans in the 2010 congressional elections, making them a potentially crucial indicator of the prevailing political winds in the 2012 battle for the White House.

'Not giving up on Obama'
In that respect, the message from the focus groups provided some good news for Obama. His overall approval ratings have sunk into the low 40s as the economy continues to falter.

"These voters don't seem like they have given up on Obama," Newhouse, the Republican pollster, said. "They are losing patience with Washington, but it seemed like Obama doesn't come out that bad."

A few members of each group said they definitely would not vote for Obama in 2012, and a few said they would. But most were not close to deciding who they would support.

"I'm disappointed at the lack of action," said Lisa in Iowa. She backed Obama in 2008 but said she would not do so again.

Few were paying much attention to the Republican race to pick a nominee to challenge Obama in 2012, and they had little good to say about Congress. Many said members of Congress were more interested in politics than progress.

"It takes forever to get things passed," said Kimberly in Florida. "We're waiting and we're waiting and we're waiting."

Social issues like abortion and immigration that can play a big role in Republican primary campaigns were totally ignored by the focus group moms, who listed pocketbook economic issues, education and healthcare as their big concerns.

Many said they or someone in their family had been laid off from a job and nearly all said they had been forced to adjust their lifestyle to deal with the worsening economy.

Some moved in with parents after a divorce. Others were working a second job, delaying vacations, paying off credit cards or clipping coupons when shopping. They used words like scared, confused, worried and frustrated to describe the economy.

"It's a daily struggle," said Debbie in New Hampshire. Added Denise: "I feel like there is a new disaster every day."

Few blamed Obama for the economic troubles, but banks and Wall Street did get some of the blame. Some blamed themselves for overextending their credit.

"These voters seem like they have lost control," Newhouse said. "There is a sense of total uncertainty. There is a sense they are living on the edge, they are living on the precipice."

Yeah... driven to the precipice thanks to the inaction of the GOP congress.

America's Autumn???

Hey, Dee, I like America's Autumn. Autumn is the time when things fall away, leaving the landscape barren and ready for change. Like the leaves, this inequity in wealth needs to fall away, leaving room for the middle class to re-build our society. There's a long, dark Winter coming if this Autumn does not bring great change to our country. This will be the real Winter of our discontent. So you want to reduce the spending power of the ones who would spend more if they had it to spend. That is not going to create demand, that will reduce demand. The hole we are in is there because there isn't enough demand to cause the need to hire more workers. If more workers are let go because of lower demand YOU are the ones who are digging the hole deeper.
