Politico's reporting that unnamed GOP leaders say the Boehner plan will be their last act on raising the debt ceiling. Quite a bluff, if that's what it is. I think a Boehner/Reid hybrid will end up passing, but I still say a last-minute clean bill is possible, too. We'll see. Here's today's Morning EDition:
TODAY
- House tonight expected to vote on Speaker Boehner's (R-OH) budget cuts.
DEBT CEILING / BUDGET
- Boehner this morning: "It's a zippity-doo-dah day." #Leadership.
- Boehner's plan is picking up GOP support -- which is weird, because it would raise the debt ceiling.
- Boehner is asking the Tea Party to abandon their pledge, in order to pass a bill that won't become law.
- Boehner's also selling his own members a line of crap.
- Analysis: The right wing has already won. (The two parties' plans aren't that different.)
- The Reid plan, though, does offer progressives more to like.
- And Boehner's hold on the speakership seems secure.
- But there are dueling assessments of Boehner's status.
- Did the RSC's open challenge to Boehner backfire to Boehner's benefit?
- Remember when Boehner said he wouldn't strong-arm his members? Good times.
- The White House is pushing for support from some of its constituencies, too.
- Boehner's revised plan would cripple the recovery even worse.
- Tea Party goes after Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for belittling hobbitry.
- Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips goes after the House freshmen turncoats.
- Behold the power of the Tea Party's opposition to the Boehner plan.
- EJ Dionne to Obama: Stop seeking the center, it doesn't exist.
- Some investors already anticipate the buying opportunities a default could create.
- Democrats will have the leverage on their side with the Bush tax cuts (leaving them even less excuse for caving then).
- Unnamed Republicans tell Politico a modified Boehner plan is the last thing the House will pass to avoid default.
- The Democrats' massive slow-motion cave in summary.
- Debt ceiling whip count.
- NOT investing in infrastructure is more expensive than investing in infrastructure.
- The Treasury's bill-payment policy: First come, first served.
- Just like happened with the budget showdown, GOP is using "defeat Obama" to bring Tea Party on board.
- And Treasury is standing by its Aug. 2nd deadline. (Meaning, what? Even if they have money on Aug. 3, they won't pay our bills?)
ECONOMY
- The Tooth Fairy is cutting back.
- Rise in home sales beats expectations.
- Latest data show the economy is losing steam.
JOBS
- Jobless claims fall below key bellwether.
- Poll: Americans see jobs, especially in manufacturing, as priority one, but hear fewer in DC talking about them.
BIG OIL
- Exxon reports 41% increase in quarterly profits. Royal Dutch Shell profits are up 77% from a year ago.
- Pres. Obama will unveil ambitious new mileage standards tomorrow.
TERRORISM
- Planned Parenthood clinic firebombed.
- Number of people DHS has working on right-wing domestic terrorism: One.
- And here's the wisdom the FBI called on to educate its agents about Islam.
IRAQ
- More Americans dying from Iranian-made weapons.
LIBYA
- Western diplomats offer Gaddafi a deal to stay in Libya, but leave power.
RESTORING HONOR
- The ex-wife of Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) has spent nine years trying to get him to pay his child support.
- Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) rails against prosecutorial discretion (except when it benefits him).
2012
- ABC News targets campaign materials made not-in-America.
- Most members of Congress see Tea Party waning in 2012.
- Southern Democrats are disappearing, too.
- New ads demonstrate just how worried the GOP is about Medicare.
- Poll shows Gov. Rick Perry's (R-TX) strengths.
MITT ROMNEY
- Romney again accidentally makes the case for Obamanomics.
MICHELE BACHMANN
- Marcus Bachmann's campaign reimbursements raise questions.
- Why might her best buddy not endorse her?
NEWT GINGRICH
- Gingrich gets booed. In Georgia.

The ex-wife of Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) has spent nine years trying to get him topay his child support.
Dead Beat Joe!!!
We need someone to fine out just how many of the teaparty are dead beats, tax cheats, government hand out receivers, etc...
I am making my SWAG at around 68 of the 83
Right on Pilotshark . . .
We also need to see how many of them are still waiting for their spines, their hearts, their consciences . . . to come in the mail . . .
And speed up the mailing process . . .so they can do the right things they are PAID to do by us !!
Oh PS, it was not his fault he has those children, it is her's, she wasn't allowed to use birth control! He is one of the biggest mouthed, "NO" nothing Teapots along with Allen West that Boehner has to put up with. Tip them over and pore them out. I've had enough tea! Send tea bags to the House.
LOL . . . good one Thankfulmom . . . The Tea Potty needs to be dumped in the bay as a protest !!
Please do not pollute the bay. They must be disposed of carefully, with the rest of the toxic waste.
Miranda,
I think all teapubliecants come with their own MSDS just for disposal.
Why would they come with their own MSDS Pilot? Wouldn't that just be some of that stifling regulation they're against? LOL!!
LOL well that could be so true.
smiling i think i need to stand corrected again. LOL
LOL . . . gotta love the humor folks ! Maybe we could just flush the Tea Potty so they would go thru the treatment plant before they get to the bay !!
Sewer rats, might get contaminated. No sense in taking their lives they are worth more than teabeggers.
Well, here's a thought for another t-bagger, greedy loud mouth Michele Bachman. Any one who has grown up in foster care knows what a night mare that can be.
These people get paid! Food, medical, school, cloths, housing allowance---. You get the point! Now, 25 of these, under her roof! WOW! The children's bills are paid for by either the state or federal government; ( You know the one she want's to destroy)!
Ok, I'm not a genius in math but these people did not do this out of the kindness of their hearts ,( if they have one)! Face the facts people, this is a business! Where are these kids now? Were any of these kids gay? How many had serious mental or emotional issues? Coming from a dysfunctional environment into another--with 5 biological already there!
I can imagine the emotional trauma and possible damage these people did to these children praying over their heads, trying to drive the daemons out! Where are they now? You never see them campaigning for the "dim wit boob" ! God, I had enough issues to deal with in life after coming out of the foster care I was in---. It took years to get over the crap, I went through in these homes.
Heres a fact! The more religious the foster home I was in, the more perverted the situation I experienced! I can imagine the Bachman's with their phony psychological cures for praying away the gay, has done to the poor kids in their house of horrors! I would also like to ask if they were so benevolent why didn't they adopt them? My husband and I adopted a little 3 year boy, to add to our family with our lovely 5 year old biological daughter. I can bet the reason the Bachman's did not adopt them is simply $$$$$$$$, it's a business folks!!!! And the Bachman's are as phony as a $3 dollar bill!!! Greed, lies, total bovine feces the more you dig with the pitch fork, the more stink you will find in the manure. Just be sure to ware your tall rubber boots around them, with a close pen, for your nose.
Adding to Dr. JoAnna Graller,
It would be interesting to see if she chose babies or older children. You earn the most when you take in the babies.
But, she also accepted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack for one of her homes. She has believed in government handouts for her household for many, many, many years - now that she is a Tea Party Mistress, now all of a sudden she is a government spender hawk - what a total himmocrit she is.
The sad thing is that the Tea Party does not even care about her past. They, just like she, has a "Don't do as I do, do as I say" approach to everything in life.
Sad, sad, sad. The Tea Party just cannot hold to their own convictions themselves.
If anyone was paying close attention during the Town Hall shoutouts last year - many of the Tea Partiers were retired persons (look at old U-tube videos). Those retired people were on Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare. Yet they were yelling as loud as they could "Keep the government away from my health insurance." Someone should have grabbed a bull horn and told those people - YOU CURRENTLY HAVE GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE!!! They do not want anyone touching their Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare - but that is where it must stop - with them.
Both the House & Senate bills s/b vetoed and the Senate pass a one sentence bill to raise the debt Ceiling till 2013. Then send it to the House and if they don't pass it guess who will be blamed for the default.
Until congress passes viable legislation that includes a jobs program, they should receive absolutely NO pay. The American People should demand a 50% pay cut for Senators and Congressmen, and should have the opportunity to vote on tax increases.
In order to level the playing field, lobbyists and special interest groups should be required to match ALL campaign contributions, putting money INTO the government coffers. Furthermore, and I know some of you will be butt-hurt over this statement, corporate taxes and taxes to the uber-rich should be at 33%. It has been proven, over the last 10 years, that the Bush tax cuts, along with corporate charity doesn't work. While we're at it, where are the payments from Wall Street for the TARP loans? I don't think they have even made an interest payment!
Until there is some equality, as GUARANTEED by our constitution, the majority of Americans will continue to lack adequate representation Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the basis for the American Revolution TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION?
Brilliant 1joker60 . . .
Take away the pay of congress . . .
Take away the benefits of congress . . .
Take away the keys to the offices of congress . . .
until they all grow some spines and do what they were elected to do !
See how fast things get done !
Every working person can totally relate to cuts in pay or lack of pay raises and lost bebifits. People that go to work and do their jobs to the best of their capacity. The congress is not doing their jobs ,therefore instead of cutting programs people have already paid into...(Money our government spent) start with Congress and Senate salaries, health care and retirements!
Send the Wolf knocking on thier front door!
Force our elected officals into a reality the rest of live everyday.
Unfortunately, the constitution does not allow congress salaries ro be raised or LOWERED except the the first session of the NEW congress. They get paid regaurdless. I think it's wrong but thats the constitution.
You know, the funny thing, they are stripping unions, lowering previously agreed upon pensions, health insurance, etc, etc. I say that they should lower the existing pensions and healthcare of their retired senators and congressmen as well. That costs the government money as well. Has an Amendment with that kind of wording been introduced by anyone who is also willing to cut unions?
I can't believe the Democrats are falling for this BS GOP song and dance. I'm confident that there will be a so-called "compromise" and no need for the POTUS to depend on the Constitution to avert a catastrophic default (though I would completely endorse that, if necessary). Why? Because Harry Reid's bill is already a HUGE gift to the GOP--and the Republicans are just playing us, waiting to ride in on their white horses and pretend that they're looking reasonable and giving in on something, when in fact with Reid's bill they're getting nearly EVERYTHING they wanted, with no increase in revenues.
Why is it that Democrats are such bad negotiators???
This all makes me ILL.
Harry Ried's bill is a bluff . . . it is being done to show that the REAL Republicon agenda is to destroy President Obama and that they will not agree to anything that may make things better for our country . . . no matter how many of their demands are met . . .
They are treasonous extortionists and economic terrorists . . . end of story.
MsT 4.1
The powerful seniors’ group AARP is endorsing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) deficit reduction plan over Speaker John Boenner’s (R-OH).
this is from TP so it might be wort maybe checking into, as it seems the big 3 are off the table.
We need to immediatly raise the debt limit even if it requires invoking the 14th amendment.
We cannot cut spending on the back of maintaining tax cuts and creating loopholes for the rich and corporations that send American jobs overseas.
When Bush was elected in '80 we had a balanced budget, but he created the tax cuts for the wealthy and paid for his wars with debt ceiling increases that congress passed overwhelmingly. These cuts were supposed to increase revenues retroactively through the increase of revenues by the increase of tax revenue from the poor and middle class. The trickle down theory, as in the Reagan administration these tax cuts did nothing except make the wealthy richer and the poor poorer.
We need to eliminate the tax breaks and loopholes for the wealthy and corporations increasing the revenues in addition to cutting federal spending. Making the poor, elderly and middle class pay by cutting an additional 400 billion per year in entitlements to make up for the tax breaks and loopholes is just plain wrong.
Why doesn't Obama take any deal with raising the debt limit then line item veto all of the questionable crap of the Republicans?
The Republicans have kept us under a Reign of Terror for the last Month. The death line has been drawn in the sand, who will cross it? Chad, I hope they pass the raise of the dedet ceiling with a lot of crap attached that he can X with his little pen, just for the satisfaction.
Once again, the republicans filibustered every attempt to let the President have a "line item veto".
Are you kidding MRJCN, the republicans have had us under a Reign of Terror since January 2009 when President Obama took his Oath of Office. Just look at how many "fights" they have induced over every single thing. Filibustering EVERY SINGLE JOBS BILL that came out of Congress. And now that they have taken their Oaths of Office this past January, they have just added insult to injury. But now, they are doing it at the Federal AND State levels all over the United States. We REALLY need to take our country back from these people and reverse every single controversial law they have passed on both the Federal and State levels.
ED,
Not sure if you read this far down, But it sure would be nice to hear you shout out to the newest UNION members down in VA. smiling that`s your home state right?
THANKS for all the support! and well that goes to ALL of Bloggers here as well!
Maybe you can start a segment and have Union leaders on showing and telling us on what they are doing to raise member ship and support.
smiling be nice to hear some good stuff even if it is small.
Wish I could join a Union - we have had a decrease in pay every single year for the past 5 years.
Now, adding insult to injury, yes my insurance premium went down about $7.00 a pay - but ALL of my deductibles went up. I now pay $35.00 for every doctors visit; $50.00 for every specialists visit; $100.00 for every ER visit, and $13,000 for every hospital stay - YES I said THIRTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! Since I only make $28,000 per year - I had better never end up in the hospital huh!
Yes, I need to join a UNION!
why ar the gop cutting poor and middle class things and not rich folks things y ar the news people not asking them this news outlet need to put them on the spot to answer this question im so tired of this bull s@#t the president and the republicans and democrats need to take a pay cut in half and pay there own insurance like we pay i need my ssdi payment to pay my bills and eat and keep my credit good .......we need to march in dc and let ar voices be heard if this goes on after the 3rd of aug......
I have watch that Tea Party Republican Congressman Joe Walsh from Illinois get on tv and talk about President Obama like dog. He has call the President a liar. The nerve of some people. Here this man owe his ex-wife over $100,000 dollars in back child support. I have heard of men being put in jail for not paying their child support. Who in the world elected this man? We have a Congressman who doesn't take care of his kids, he is a deadbeat Dad. A deadbeat Dad, in Congress. The people that elected this racists deadbeat Dad ought to be ashame of themselves. There is nothing lower than a man who will not support his kids.
Don't forget - as a Republican, he is a Family Values man!
Mechelle that is a good joke "Family Values".
This is the argument/talking point of most tea party supported elected officials.
"Why can't the US government handle its financies like the families manage theirs?"
Well, the US government operates in a COMPLETELY different realm and such an amature comparison is the REAL problem we're in the shape that we're in. In addition, the United States is linked to global markets ALL over the world. That adds an additional level of complexity. So trying to over simplify a very complex matter only worsens things.
Yes, the government should live within its means; but disasters and conflicts around the world makes that extremely difficult. The globalization process has, in essence, removed the borders and connected our economies. These are the broad problems and isolationism is not an option. Yes, we must examine and reduce spending in those areas that can be and done in a manner that is incremental over time. Lastly, you must PAY for the debt. You can not merely cut and cut and cut! You must eventually start paying on it and that means income or revenues! The only way to REALLY start making a serious impact on our deficit is to ACTUALLY pay for it through tax increases. These increases would go to PAY the actually deficit and pay for those obiligations the nation has already committed itself to. Please do not be offended by my comment, but I just don't think most people do not realize the size and scope of a REAL macroeconomic system is in comparison to a family around a kitchen table!
Government is like a family with a wealthy brother-in-law positioned on the couch .. all day long. .. and he doesn't contribute jack to the household.
The one Icant understand not wanting to raise the debt ceiling is Michell Bachmann. Her and her family make their living off of the government.Farm subsidies Medicaid for her hubbys business and her government salary. So how can she rail about the government spending to much money when her and her family takes so much of it.What a hypocrit.
It's because Bachman has the intellect of a small soap dish. But, apparantly hubbies process of changing gays to straights works...Just look at HIM! When he speaks it sounds like a snake pit!!!
Section 4 Of The 14th Amendment Was Designed To Stop Boehner!
Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.
The sponsor of the provision, Benjamin Wade, wrote at the time:
[The proposed amendment] puts the debt incurred in the civil war on our part under the guardianship of the Constitution of the United States, so that a Congress cannot repudiate it. I believe that to do this wil give great confidence to capitalists and will be of incalculable pecuniary benefit to the United States, for I have no doubt that every man who has property in the public funds will feel safer when he sees that the national debt is withdrawn from the power of a Congress to repudiate it and placed under the guardianship of the Constitution than he would feel if it were left at loose ends and subject to the varying majorities which may arise in Congress.
Jack Balkin writes
Sen. McConnell said that their number one job is to see to it that President Obama is a one term President, may the Tea Parties number one job is to see to it that John Boehner looses his seat as House leader leaving the position open to Tea party leader Eric Cantor, which is what this country does not need.
Sen. McConnell said that their number one job is to see to it that President Obama is a one term President. Maybe the Tea Party's number one job is to see to it that John Boehner looses his seat as House leader leaving the position open to Eric Cantor, which is not what this country needs..But the Tea Party does..
The Tea Party Did It
This will be the 2012 GOP Tombstone epitaph.
Dear Ed,
I am totally disgusted with both the TEA and the Republican Parties for the way these negotiations are being handled. Both of them are acting like spoiled, bratty children who don't want to do something their parents require. My son would pull temper tantrums similar to these same tactics and refuse to do things myhusband and I needed. Our Nation needs a thriving economy and jobs that put people back to work - NOT immature individuals who just want their own way no matter who it huts. I only hope that our Nations' economy doesn't suffer the consequences of their stubborn, childish behavior.
While we are talking politics- I find it amusing that zero dems are planning to vote for Boehner's bill in the house.
Especially after a few years of people on these blogs being critical of few if any Reps voting for Obama's bills over the years. Seems that all that indicated GOP people didn't think for themselves, but just followed party line. And, of course, Dems were open minded and free to vote their will.
Nothing surprises me more than to recognize hypocrites in the making.
Obama has betrayed the United States of America and it's people. His gutless, spineless inability to lead has driven our nation into ruin. My ex-husband served this country, honorably, for almost 14 years and is disabled as a direct result of his military service. He received many awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation. Obama's capitulation to the Cantor/Boehner/McConnell Republican agenda is like spit in the face to every veteran, particularly the wounded and/or disabled. As a parent, you teach your children by example. As President of the United States, you should lead by example, have integrity, tell the truth & have a set of b*lls big enough to throw over your shoulder & drag them down the street behind you, leaving the wing-nut lunatics to eat dust. Obama wouldn't know integrity or truth if either one bit him on his bony little butt. As a lifelong Democrat, I hope & pray that the elected representatives in Congress pursue Articles of Impeachment and get this waffling weasel out of office, at least Joe Biden is a proven leader. The Democrats need to drop Obama like a hot potato & back a candidate that talks the talk and truly walks the walk. Obama has disgraced his office, betrayed his constituents and proved (by example) that the only thing he deserves is contempt.
Oh yeah, Mr deadbeat dad, prince among men, Joe "Not one more dollar of debt on the shoulders of my children or grandchildren" Walsh sounds like the perfect running mate for Michelle Bachman. If that won't frighten fish out of a lake, nothing will. And we thought W (puddin' head the wooden head) was a doofus. Go figure.
Ok Ed; let's worry about " first things first" so what WE (the american people) is the raising of the .... and not the debt (reduction). The second can and SHOULD be attackedis the reduction.
Congress represent the PEOPLE and therefore THEY should worry about us and not their POLITICAL assssssssssss.
