The dog days of summer are quieting things down a bit, finally -- on the non-debt ceiling stuff. Of that, however, there is plenty. Here's today's Morning EDition:
TODAY
- Two House committees hold hearings on homegrown terrorism. Unless it's by white Christians.
BUDGET
- The Treasury might have an extra week's worth of cash on hand.
- Pres. Obama's call for contacting Congress worked. Just ask Rep. Allen West (R-FL). And it ain't over yet.
- Wall St. created a monster it can't control. Yet, anyway.
- The Wall St. Journal is also sad about the monster.
- But maybe Wall St. just hasn't flexed its full muscle against the monster. Yet.
- The market's jitters remain relatively arcane.
- But maybe having to delay their deluxe vacations will get them to crack the whip.
- Speaker Boehner (R-OH) delays his vote so he can whip support.
- Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) tries to get Republicans to accept compromise.
- Maybe because McConnell is quietly working on one with Senate Leader Harry Reid (R-NV).
- Democrats are gambling on a Boehner fail.
- And Democrats are whipping against the Boehner plan.
- Who's balking at the Boehner plan in the House GOP.
- Tim Pawlenty comes out against the Boehner plan. Tim Pawlenty, we should note, is a Republican presidential candidate.
- Who's leading the charge against the Boehner plan? The key architect of Bush-Cheney torture policies.
- The right-wing fears moderate Republicans will get a deal through the Senate.
- The Tea Party says Mission Accomplished.
- The CBO weighs in on both the Boehner and Reid deals.
- Boehner works to rejigger his deal in response to CBO report.
- The White House is working on its own deal...and might be open to a short short-term debt-ceiling hike.
- Polls show Obama could suffer for targeting entitlements.
- Poll: Most Americans side with the president.
- Greenwald: Obama's pursuit of the middle is costing him.
- VIDEO: GOP rallies support for Boehner's plan by playing movie clip of criminals planning a violent attack.
- Affleck responds.
WALL ST. / BANKS
- Even if the US avoids default, Wall St. may punish Americans for not embracing even more austerity.
- But Moody's assures Americans all they have to worry about is higher interest rates. Whew!
- Anti-Dodd/Frank lobbyists doing brisk business, which is weird, what with Dodd-Frank having impoverished Wall St.
- Alabama county tries to stave off the largest municipal bankruptcy ever.
- DOJ preparing to go after Wells Fargo for allegedly targeting black borrowers for predatory lending.
BROKEN GOVERNMENT
- House Dems work to end the FAA shutdown.
VOTING RIGHTS
- Maine GOP tries to scare college students out of voting.
ISLAMOPHOBIA
- Rep. Peter King (R-NY) goes ahead with anti-Muslim hearings; blocks Muslim Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) from testifying.
- Birther accused of fraud.
MISOGYNY
- Senators protest some of Saudi Arabia's sexist policies.
IMMIGRATION
- Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) is arrested outside the White House protesting immigration policy.
TERRORISM
- Is al Qaeda on the brink of extinction?
AFGHANISTAN
- Kandahar mayor assassinated.
MITT ROMNEY
- Romney names his VP short list. All swing staters.
MICHELE BACHMANN
- Add "home loan" to the list of government loans/aid Bachmann both rails against and has utilized.
RICK PERRY
- Perry follows in Bush's footsteps to the door of the religious right, with one big misstep.
Oh, and thanks to whomever it was that pointed out my billions/millions slip yesterday. I apologize and I've fixed it. Thanks for the eagle eye.

So Peter was you off your Med`s when you ask the FBI to investigate news corp. or are you off your Med`s and not aloud the Rep. who most if not all of the parents have spoken to about this to testify.
think you are still in my Coward zone.
Dose King know the origins of Grover's wife? Isn't this a conflict of interest?
ED. Remember your Song Contest a couple of months ago....find it and start playing those songs again....one specifically applied to Congress right now and has the words "They don't care about you."
This is flat out economic terrorism and extortion ! There is no other way to put it !
WHEN MIDDLE AMERICANS are forced to give more and more of the less and less they have. . . it is called 'shared sacrifice' . . . But . . .
WHEN TOP AMERICANS are asked to give back a small bit of their huge financial profits and tax breaks. . . it is called 'soak the rich' . . .
WHEN MIDDLE AMERICANS rely on social safety net programs they paid for with their taxes. . . it is called 'socialism' and they are called 'dead beats' . . . But
WHEN TOP AMERICANS get subsidies, tax refunds and graft they don't pay for with their taxes. . . it is called 'good business' and they are called 'captains of industry' . . .
What is wrong with this picture ?
Call speaker John Boehner and tell him to Stop Holding America Hostage To Republicon Extortion And Economic Terrorism :
1- (202) 225-0600

Wall street punishing Americans. They should be punishing Republicans.
The Market is taking a drop because of panic. If putting your cash in the mattress is a plan, it still will be worth less. If keeping in the market is your thing it will be worth less. If you buy precious metal, you are buying high and high will mean a sell off very soon leaving you with less. If you bought Canadian Looneys in April they already dropped, and if you buy now they are headed wherever we are. If you move your 401K risk to a $1 for $1 cash option it will go down.
Yes, Wall Street should be taking "The Town" on the Tea Party. And tomorrow more dumb people will sell and drop the DOW 300 points, but not eliminate the loss because if we default there is no safe haven. What do we call the people who sell and drop the market? Cantor has bet against America in the market, so I guess we can call them Republicans.
Got any cash left this week? Pay off debt, pay down your car loan, prepay a vacation deal you can use later, prepay your burial expense. Be creative, but don't get rid of it all.
Ed - go back to the taliban as their spokesperson. U r no longer wanted here in the United States. U r shrill and despicable. and....a non-factor in ANY discussion!
Excuse me ! This is the Ed Show blog page so you should go back to your Nazi voice from hell Fox News crap place.
smiling
yes i agree you get a NO VALUE vote.
just remember to remove your head from your fourth point of contact slowly as it seems you have this head in your ass problem for a while.
LOL
Really I Luv Libs . . . its called " freedom of choice " . . . you are free to choose to stay off this blog and not watch Ed !! The rest of us are glad to hear his voice and what he has to say !
I understand people like you tho because . . .
Voting Republican Is Easier Than Thinking !!!
Amen, Mr. Ed is a joke.
What? You right wing nuts need to change the chanel, or do you have enough gumption to do that? Ed is GREAT.
I am amused by the ones that say that crap about Ed. They watch his show an d then come on his blog and spew their right wing foul mouth hatred. Must have been kicked off Fox.
Ed is a low life liberal commie....and about to get fired for good! Its called addition by subtraction.
Now go away trolls...
LMAO
thanks keep it up.
No he is going to get promoted to the head of the lineup and Lawrence put at the end because he has the last word on your corruption .
And you have what constructive answer to a problem you frame as "ED"?
When it is said that Fox News is the Rich getting the Middle Class to Blame the Poor, where are you on the food change? Certainly not the top. Probably at the bottom since you seem to have enough sense to do yourself in as a part of your astute political strategy.
I wonder if all them calls and blogs to the Congress Monday changed anything? Oh I forgot you cant fix stupid.
No sadly u can't fix the fact u r both a racist and stupid!
Dude you are not worth the time to even respond.
Fire all those people in Washington. When someone works for you and they are not doing their job, you let them go, deselect them, fire their ass. That's what we need to do. Nobama can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk. He has no leadership skills, none what so ever. Fire his ass also. He promised us change, this is not the change we expected. None of those idiots have come up with a plan to create more jobs, left wingers and right wingers. I am tired of the people who won't get off the lazy ass and go out and find a job. I have been working since I was 19 years old, am 71 now and still working. Some of these people want the government to take care of them for the rest of their life, plus they pay no taxes. There is something wrong with that picture. I recently saw on some of the cable news shows where the caucasion earning are 20 times higher than blacks and 18 times higher that hispanics. What was the purpose of showing that, are whites being singled out, we earn every nickel we make and damn proud of it. The others can do the same if they want to. It's just a matter of doing it and don't depend on Uncle Sam to take care of you.
Ed, There's been a grassroots call on FaceBook for a strike on Friday to protest the Republican intention to cut benefits and continue to let the Uber-Rich and Corporations continue to be on Tax Vacations. Go to "One Day Nation-Wide Strike" on Facebook for details. We're going to speak the only language these Terrorists understand. Please join us and do your best to spread the word; we need your help! Thanks for what you do...
Are you the same Carol Anderson on LastFM? If so I am your friend Behemouth.
The intellectual cancer that has been festering in the Republican party is now affecting the entire country, it's pathetic. I think it's quite lear these people are either not smart enough or are flat dishonest to such an extent they're not even connected to reality anymore. Congress King's investagation is a Mcarthiest waste of tax payer money and thus I refuse to acknowledge it as any thing other than what it is: a politically motivated immoral witch hunt designed to strip American citizens of their natural rights.
If Congress continues to take our money and deliver crap like this they will all suffer for it.
King is on an old fashion witch hunt....why not let sleeping dogs lie....Yet another reps political diversion. Are these people so paranoid that they lay awake at night thinking about this stuff.....I need a good nights sleep myself, no need to go sticking my nose in someone else's business.
This is a question being ask by C&L its about Pat Buchanan. and yes i like if ED, Rachel, And Lawrence to speak up (if they can).
seeing they got rid of Keith and Cenk.
oh not wanting to seem like being a butt head just need to know how they stand.
The questions progressives should ask pose to other progressives who have shows on MSNBC: are they OKAY with having a white supremacist walking around in MSNBC? Are they going to going remain quiet if MSNBC does nothing to hold this individual accountable?
I'd like to hear it,
I COULD NOT BE MORE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS QUESTION "Can we have a re-call
election of these T Party hawn yahks?" If not when are they all due up for re-election? I will take my sorry 81 year old butte on the campaign trial for any movement to kick their sorry buttes into the next county.
They get in front of the camera with their stupid "stepford wife" smiles and spew
ignorant rhetoric. Damn monkeys with peanut butter for brains. Sorry, the monkeys would not be associated. They have a higher intelligence.
Gee, Dee, my husband just asked me the same question....I told him there was talk on the Vine about trying to get ED and the other MSNBC talking heads to each just have a blog with a statement that we could just sign on line some way to a petition.....Wonder how we could get that to work.. you have to do it in their district....Just send emails and sign...Like the magic pen some of the legislators do when they are out of town.Still thinking about it.
Because Ed, Et AL are not a political movement. They are a Media outlet. Click on a picture at the top of the page and you get to watch a commercial for big oil.
A troop of Baboons!
Ok, All those who count agree to raise the Debt Ceiling. The Reps are afraid of the 14th, so they give the President, in their words, "THE AUTHORITY" to raise the debt ceiling. That is all. Don't need the teabeggers votes to pass it, if all other vote for it. Beggers are still holding out. God Help Us.
Raise the Debt Limit. Period.
Invoke the 14th Amendment if needed.
Tax cuts for American Jobs. Period. Value Added Tax on all Imported products. This is Fair Trade for America.
1% Tax on the upper 3% to retire the debt.
Have the FED Bail us out the same way they bailed out the banks, with $20 trillion over the next 2 years at zero interest.
End the Exempt Employee Act that forces several million highly educated Americans to do the job of millions more without compensation.
Government Funded Elections. Period.
No Voter Registration. Period. You vote or you don't vote.
We cant get anywhere as long as we keep validating the likes of people like Grover Norquist.. who hasn't been elected to any office in Washington or elsewhere and is in control of the Republican right wing. Mr. Norquist is a traitor to the American people he has put forth a pledge which the American people dont agree with. The majority of us accept the fact that not only should we take away the upper echelons loop holes and tax rates but that we should raise taxes on them. Congress's pledge should be with the American people only. That's their oath they take when they are sworn into office. Where are the authorities to stop and prosecute this interloper in our democracy? If a person electioneers near a poll during an election he will be prosecuted or elected, because we have provisions in our constitution that don't allow for this. Likewise with making pledges to private individuals who have only one segment of the population in mind when they ask congressmen to sign their pledges. This is not a funny act. It expresses how the power of the people has been handed over to the power of the wealthy. Everyone can stand around and act like 'see no evil hear no evil speak no evil'. But I certainly see the evil in this and ask anyone who agrees with me to demand the prosecution of Mr. Norquist for creating a hostile environment in our House of Representatives, and ultimately in our nation.
I agree with Rep. James Clyburn, yes, the National debt ceiling can be justifiably increased by the President invoking Section 4 of the Fourteenth Amendment..According to one Constitutional scholar, Professor Jeffrey Rosen, "There's just one Supreme Court case that seems to cast light on the question of language of the Fourteenth Amendment, specifically Section 4 of said amendment concerning the National debt clause..The case was called "Perry vs. United States,1935." In that case, the Supreme Court seem to argue that this debt clause should be interpreted broadly, rather than narrowly..Supporters are swaying toward that language, to say we should not construe the debt clause strictly, but instead, construe or interpret it expansively or broadly..
Senator Benjamin Wade of Ohio, who was instrumental in drafting the proposed language which became the basis of the current Section 4, read as follows: "The public debt of the United States, including all debts and obligations which have been or may hereafter be incurred in suppressing the insurrection or in carrying on war in defense of the Union, or for payment of bounties or pensions incident to such war, and provided for by law, shall be inviolable." Senator Wade's explanation of his proposal follows: "This amendment concerning occurred debt under the guardianship of the Constitution of the United States is proposed so that a Congress cannot repudiate it." He further states that " I believe that to do this will give great confidence to capitalists and will be of incalculable pecuniary benefit to the United States, for I have no doubt that every man who has property in public funds, will feel safer when he sees that the National debt is withdrawn from the power of a Congress to repudiate it, and placed under the guardianship of the Constitution, than he would feel if it were left at loose ends, and subject to the varying majorities which may arise in Congress..
This section of the Fourteenth Amendment goes further and secures the pensioners of the country.." We ought to do something to protect those wounded patriots who have been stricken down in the cause of their country, and put the security of their pension and their means of support beyond the power of wavering majorities in Congress, who may at some time, perhaps, be hostile to the soldier..I am anxious to put the pensions of our soldiers and their widows and children under the guardianship of the Constitution of the United States..They ought to be there, along with your public debt." God bless the insight of Senator Benjamin Wade, and God bless America!!
